We have a 2004 Husqvarna LT151 36" mower-deck. It's a single cylinder Kohler Courage and a metal transmission, put on a new valve-cover gasket before the last season, I also built up a new mower-deck before the 2022 season and serviced the transmission brake.. I have learned that the Kohler courage has a bit of a bad reputation, but at least our one has been a good performer.. and I would prefer that over a newer one with a plastic transmission 🙂had a look at the sump cover bolts when I did the valve cover gasket and the was no sign of any of the coming loose. We also have a Husqvarna R112C with a single cylinder briggs engine and a metal transmission One of the things I have learned watching You-tube videos is to stay far away from anything with a plastic transmission regardless of what brand of mower it is!
@@AStanton1966 We where blissfully unaware of that saying at the time 😂but.. I have heard/read it once we already owned one.. anyway I don't scare so easily .. And I would much rather have a Kohler Courage motor and a metal transmission than anything else and a plastic transmission 😁
great video!:) I love our 100 series, it has around 560 hours on it now..=) Luckily deere stopped putting plasting transmissions in the 100 series. Now all of them are aluminum.:)
My 2001 JD LT155 single cylinder just keeps on going. Not a shop trip yet, burns maybe 1/4 quart of oil a season. Maybe 5 of my neighbors HAD a cub cadet , MTD etc., but went to lawn services years ago for some reason. Mostly lawn service, about 7 push mowers and my one tractor in a 66 home sub division.
If you have a local john deere dealer, check their used inventory. They often have really nice low hour trade ins for cheap. A new x350 with a 48" deck would run you around $4200,but get one with 70-80 hours on it and take about $1k off that retail price
I got 8 years out of my plastic transmission in my 2016 t3000 Craftsman Riding mower. It has that 22hp Briggs and Stratton 2 cylinder engine that you mentioned. My question is can the plastic transmission be replaced with a aluminum one. I hate to get rid of the mower because everything else has been no problem. Thanks and nice video.
My Husqvarna will 17 years old this year. Engine (Kohler18 single cylinder) never touched and runs perfectly (actually I have worked on it - I have changed the spark plug once in 16 yrs). Stamped deck has copped a pounding and I have welded it a couple of times, but it still works well.
I just picked up a used Husqvarna with a 21hp Kohler and 46inch deck, it has the metal transmission and manual PTO shifter arm, year is unknown to me but it has 520 hours showing and still running strong, it cost me $400
I have a husqvarna yta24v48 with the plastic transmission. Got it for a deal and it would barely move. Replaced the cvt belt and this thing hauls ass lol
I bought a new Poulan Pro, 46" cut with a single cylinder 20hp Briggs in 2010 and still have it today and mow with it every week during mowing season. It has a metal hydrostatic transmission. It has cruise control and I can mow in reverse by turning the key to the left one notch after starting it. I can put the parking brake on and it will run while I step off of it to move debris. It was made by Husqvarna and while it does have a stamped steel deck, it's very thick and has a lifetime warranty. I do maintenance on it every spring, changing the oil and filters, sharpening blades, checking the spark plug, etc. And have replaced belts, Idler wheels and pulleys, battery and spindles on it a couple of times when needed. It still cranks right up every time and I mow about an acre a week with it. When it does eventually wear out I'll be buying a Husqvarna to replace it with. I like the idea of a John-Deere, but I don't like their practice of making parts that you can't buy cheaper aftermarket versions of and I hate what they've done to farmers, making equipment that you can't even work on yourself because you can't get the software for it and have to take it to a dealer to have it repaired.
I bought a 1984 782 d diesel cub cadet mower it is the best mower out here it runs great and cuts good it will run through the yard at 20 mile per hour it is fast i love it
I have a Husqvarna but I miss the optional high setting for the deck that I had with the John Deere. The high setting allows me to get over obstacles and to avoid getting hung up. Is there any way to set the Husqvarna deck to an optional high setting (above #6)?
You could possibly adjust the deck to be a little higher off the ground by adjusting the lift rods on either side of the back of the deck to gain a little more clearance.
if you are going to be mowing on a lot of hills, get a commercial grade mower, the residential mowers have a cheaper hydrostatic rear end and won't last if mowing hills

I have a John Deere X350 and you can’t get it at a big box store. The only thing I don’t like about mine is it moves really slow. Wish it was faster. If I had to do it again, I would have gotten a zero turn.
My 1995 year Murray has a single cylinder 14.5 hp engine. No problems with the engine and I have been mowing a 2 acre yard for 30 YEARS. The deck is badly worn near the chute because of the years of discharge. I think I will retire it this year and get a Husq with a single cylinder engine,
Replaced my Murray Select I bought in 2006 last year. Tried to find the husky 42" with the Kawasaki twin but could not find it except in the 48" deck and it was 3800 USD. Was at home depot and saw the new Murray MT200 only lawnmowers I have ever had were Murray. Been cutting my yard with it since and it is also about 1500 cheaper and it has the metal transmission. For me it has been such a great improvement from the Select series. It climbs hills, of which I have a mostly hilly yard with out any issues. Turns on a dime. Just gonna see if it last 16 years like my last one.
My John Deer has a plastic transmission the belt started coming off with 20 hours no adjustment so I bought a belt two inch smaller for a MDT works great now
I’ll just buy something atleast 15 years old I used to have a couple 05-09 riders they worked good but now all I own are vintage garden tractors, if I were to just get something for cutting grass , zero turns are the way to go
I wish that I could purchase a zero-turn. However, with bad slopes I have to settle for the Husqvarna riding mower with the limited-slip rear-end--it can't be beat! You can't escape plastic. Ford puts plastic oil pans on the Mustang GT now as well as all their 2.7 Ecoboosts!
Its very concerning to me that Deere put these quick oil change gimmick filters in their mowers. I would never use one and it makes me wonder about the motivations of Deere management.
It doesn’t make me wonder at all. They intentionally make proprietary expensive crap like this “Easy Oil Change” system to get more money out of your pocket. It only replaces about 25% of the oil volume with clean oil so it really does nothing in reality but cost you 3 times as much.
My brother in-law bought the Husq with the Kawasaki engine which is awesome. Having said that, the rest of the rider is falling apart piece by piece...it's pretty cheaply made.
I looked at both of them, and at both top end tractors. I walked away with a Husqvarna TS 354 XD. with a Kawasaki Engine and a "54-inch deck. Too many negative Deere comments on various websites for me.
The cup cadet Xt2 gx series with the locking rear differential is the best bang for the buck. Husqvarna would be my second choice .John Deere would be my third.
Nothing wrong with a single cylinder, for that reason alone you don’t know what you’re talking about. The transmission is called a hydrostatic. Not finishing this review.
JD doesn't want you to know that all real JD engines are painted green and the Chinese knock-offs are painted black, if you see a JD with an engine branded as JD but it is black it is a Chinese knock-off. Also, the new ELS engines are only good for 500 hours whereas a genuine Briggs and Stratton or Kawasaki will last 4000 to 10000, depending on how well you take care of it.
Unless youre buying a heavy duty commercial mower, a diesel usually front mount they kind of are. They are at the end of the day throw aways after 10 years. We've been using Toro diesels on our farm, latest is the 455d 126" cut. Got it for just under 6k with 1500 hours. Lucky find. It will run forever if taken care of. Our Toro 322d went 6700 hours before it broke a rod. Vtwin is the way to go.

John Deere makes a kit you can delete the quick change and turn it back to normal.
I think the motivation for the quick change filter, is to make it so easy for owners to change it, rather than not at all.
