I went back to the old lawn tractor- traded my z255 for a S240 last year- the S240 (for me) is a more comfortable ride. Plus I really like the Kawasaki engine 💚💛
They didn't mention the biggest issue between tractor and zero-turn, which is mowing on hillsides or in wet grass. Zero turns are hard to control on any hillside or when grass is wet, the hydrostatic transmissions and the unsteerable front tires on zero turns make it next to impossible to hold the mower on a straight line across a slope, or keep the mower going uphill on a straight line when the grass is wet.
@@UA-camparolee You do not have a choice in some areas, especially in certain times of the year. Plus, working though week often does not allow mowing as often.
MY old time Lawn Tractor pulls a John Deere cart loaded with fill dirt, attached my John Deere Aerator and also connect my lawn spreader. Winter I attach my snow blade to clear my long driveway. I replace my bladed twice a year and also perform my regular maintenance the same time. I've had my tractor since 2009 and only had to replace the belts, tires and Carb.
I had a ZT. They are tricky to steer at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's great. ZTs really shine if you have to mow around a lot of obstacles or landscaping. However, they ride rough. Almost impossible to go full throttle on one if there are a lot of bumps or tree roots in the yard. Whenever I ran over rough ground it really hurt. I now have a x350 tractor. It doesn't matter what I drive over in that thing, for some reason the ride is like floating on air. However, it's a PITA mowing around obstacles and landscaping.
I like the smooth ride of tractor too. Lawn here is not level. The softer ride on tractor I think is because the front wheels might be a bit larger and filled with air vs zero turn solid rubber up front
i went from tractors to zero turn - much faster to mow but yes, it beat me up. went back to a tractor...troublesome unit so i went back to a zero turn...we'll see.
never bought a new mower i get used rider mowers for about 500 to 600 works great i maintain them myself crazy to spend 3500 to cut grass just my thoughts
I know this video was filmed in Florida, but as for us who live in a four seasons state that have to deal with snow, tractor mower would be better because you can put on a front PTO and use a blade or snowblower, and get 4wd or awd as well. Some even have rear steer on fancier tractor mowers.
I too debated between the two and finally chose the tractor. Speed is not important to me and I really didn’t need the fast turn. I now had the tractor for five years and very happy. Zero turn looks cool though!
Here's an issue I encountered. Using a lawn/garden tractor, it allows you to use implements. One in particular would a broadcast spreader. With the tractor, you are able to setup a speed and drop setting to broadcast fertilizer. Cannot accurately do that with a zrt. But, when comparing cutting quality and timed saved, the zrt wins hands down.
I stick with my X590 with the 54" deck and my 2305 with the 62" deck. the X590 is used when the ground has moisture in it and once the ground dries out I break out the big gun 2305 on the yard. 5 sloping acres with few obstructions
I have 4 John Deere zero turnmowers. Have had one for 15 years and another for 14 years. They are great. Never have to go to the shop. The larger ones like 48 inch or larger ride smoother.
I cut 1 1/2 acres. Always had a tractor. The ZT is a game changer for me. I can cut in about half the time. I could never go back. The ZT is better in every way if you have a large property.
I have two GX335's - one with a 54' deck for lawn mowing & moving my utility trailer & sailboat around, and another with a snow thrower & cab for winter duty on our long driveway. My wife has a Cub Cadet ZT1-50 (couldn't find a JD ZT with a Kawasaki engine) and we double-team our three acres.
Good information. The zero turn mowers are much heavier, at least the neighbors' mowers. When I get stuck, I pull mine out by hand, except for a couple of times. They have to use a truck to pull theirs because of the weight.
The properties I take care of have enough slopes and grades to make the tractor the better choice. I have the E120, the previous designation of the S120 described here. I bought it in 2019 and it serves me well (and, yes, I live here in southeastern Florida.)
I got tired of paying someone else to cut my grass. I just got my zero turn a month ago. I love it, the first time I drove my zero turn. I kept going in circles 😂 Now I am a pro
I don't know what kind of extras you can put on a zero turn. Snowblower, snowplow, rototiller ... Usually you can do these with no problem on a riding tractor. I like the fun on a zero turn ,... but I'd rather have a lawn tractor.
And what about the price difference? When I was in the market for one of those machines, over 8 years ago, the difference in price was substantial and so I opted for the riding lawn mower and with the several hundred $'s saved I'm still buying beer I enjoy as I mow the lawn.
I bout the tracker so I could put a bagger on it for leaf clean up in the fall , add I make a lawn sprayer for weeds too. Ya the zero turn would be great if all you want to do cut grass.
Overall for non commercial the tractor has more versatility for a home owner. That said zeros are a popular gadget but most home owners find that speed does not always end up a good cut.
Neither of these two mowers will mow at 5 MPH without quality of cut issues. Higher ground speed requires higher blade speed. A commercial grade Z-Turn has a much faster blade speed than homeowner versions. Z-Turn mowers perform well mowing a relatively level lawn with many obstructions to mow around. They are also faster at reversing course at the end of a row while "striping" the lawn. I hope this helps someone before they experience buyers remorse.
@@richardlahan7068 I hold my tootsie roll pop in one hand and steer my John Deere zero turn with the other turn around at the end of the yard also. I could one hand on the arm on my knee and steer and turn around at the end of the row with just one hand. You sure you have a John Deere zero turn.. They steer good.
I have a 2006 x300 i inherited from my father, low hours and like new.Love it .Kawasaki engines are 👍. Ive put a battery ,blades, and a new deck belt on it thats it.cuts like new.
The problem I have with zero turns is there are so few people who know how to adjust one properly. The linkages are unnecessarily complex and is many cases almost inaccessible. So the steering performance steadily degrades and can't be fixed by the average homeowner. With a tractor I can change the steering sector and pinion gear in about an hour and it's just like new.
For relatively small yards (0.25-0.5 acres / I cut mines and my single daughter’s yards / 3 yards total) - the Zero Turn is not worth the difference in cost… 😳 I have to go thru a few turn gyrations for corners and trees (like she demo’d cutting around the tree) - but that adds maybe 5 mins to cutting each yard… 🤔
couple days ago, I went to my friends house and drove his Cub Cadet zero turn with a steering wheel and it took more getting used to going max speed than getting past a (non existant) learning curve
The zero turn is far better for me than the tractor style. I have 100 trees on my property, and I mow around trees A LOT. The zero turn is one pass. I also have slopes and bumpy areas on my property where one rear wheel can get stuck off the ground. The tractor just sends power to the wheel with no traction. Since the zero turn independently controls each wheel, I can send all the power to the wheel that has traction. Everything in life has advantages and disadvantages, buy what works best for you.
If you don't have an ATV, SxS, or real tractor to do actual work with, a tractor-type mower is good to have for light-duty hauling or snow removal. But for strictly mowing, I'll never go back to a tractor mower after owning a ZT. I have lots of hills, ditches, and tons of stuff to mow around and I cut my mowing time from 2+ hours to 1 hour. You just have to be careful with a ZT. They have a steep learning curve if you have anything but a flat yard.
I like the tractor better.. I can see if you had a huge open lawn with no obstacles and hills.. I think rolling hills is really tough with zero turns....😮
Yea you could jump off a tractor in emergency possibly too. Jumping off zero turn would be harder because it’s like you’re sitting in it more vs on-top of it. Hard choice because there are some nice zero turns out there
