what I loved so much was that when Moana was down and broken, her grandma didn't give her a pep talk, she didn't tell her "chin up", she said " I am sorry I put so much on you, and if you want to go home, I will be with you." like, there are actual big stakes here, but still, she wouldn't hold it against Moana to fail, instead she tells her she is loved regardless, and that feels so radical to me.

Always loved that Moana was chosen because of her compassion, not because she was a grand warrior or "the chosen one". She saved the baby sea turtle over going to get the sea shell and the ocean gifted the Heart to her, because it knew the only way to return the Heart and it wasn't a grand battle.

This movie always makes me cry because of the message I take from it, which is that even when your "heart" is taken by someone, by trauma, abuse, assault, and you become a "lava monster" in pain, and to protect yourself, that doesn't mean that's who you are, or who you'll always have to be, and you can always be healed and gain your heart again one day.

What ethnicity would Kida from Atlantis and her people be considered? Would they be islanders or...? I’m not sure if Atlantian culture is islander inspired or African inspired or what would they be? Or are they completely unique to the point they’re their own race/culture entirely? 🤔🧐 I know the lore in the movie says they’re a mix of all cultures or something along those lines because they can speak all languages

    • @anjero86
      @anjero86 3 роки тому +28

@@vixiestarfire Historically speaking, the story of Atlantis was introduced through Plato's works Timaeus and Critias. In the stories, Plato says he heard of Atlantis through his grandfather who heard it told from an Athenian statesman who heard it from an Egyptian priest. The Egyptian priest states that the Atlantean empire existed 9000 years earlier than the story timeline. If this is all being said around or during the height of the Greek/Hellenistic empire (and during the beginning of the decline of the Egyptian empire), then I would say that perhaps the Atlantean people could have been a mix of the cultures at the time, but I think perhaps more than likely something entirely unique on their own, having been at the height of their own civilization while other ancient, well known civilizations were in their infancy, or were at least still rather young. And as far as Kida and her people go, I suppose they would be islanders bc they live on an island, but still something quite different from the island cultures throughout the world we're familiar with now.

That's interesting, because the localized German title of the movie is 'Vaiana', for some reason, meaning that play on words no longer works. This is a decision I never understood, but now, it makes even less sense why they would do that. They did something similar to Zootopia, too: the German title of that is 'Zoomania'. I just cannot fathom why. It's not like it's a phrase like 'The shining' or 'The lion king' that you would (theoretically) need to translate. Just absolute insanity.

Moana is such a good story of how abuse doesnt define a person and you can overcome it. This line is SO much funnier when you realize that, due to being immortal and having gone without human contact for 1000 years, Maui has most likely forgotten how to discern different mortal ages and probably thinks that Moana is around eight years old. There is a post credit scene when Tamatoa is still stuck on his back and basically says “If my name was Sebastian and I had a cool Jamaican accent you’d help me up.” Also this film is directed by John Musker and Ron Clements the same duo that directed:
The Great Mouse Detective (which you should watch),
    The Little Mermaid,
    Aladdin,
    Hercules,
    Treasure Planet, and
    The Princess and the Frog.
The voice of Moana’s dad is the guy who played Jango Fett in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones.

My favourite part of this movie is when Moana's grandmother recognises the burden she put on Moana, and lets her know that if Moana wants to go home, she will support her every step of the way. I feel like a lot of films push this idea of sticking with something until the very end, no matter the cost, to the point that we are (however unintentionally) taught to feel weak, or like failures when we aren't able to. But that final conversation between Moana and her grandmother clearly tells us that sometimes we can't do the things we set out to do, and that's okay. It's only human to have limits, and we shouldn't feel guilty for recognising when a burden is too much, or a task is too great.

One of the greatest things about the movie is that Moana was not chosen to return the Heart because she was a grand warrior or anything like that, but because of her compassion. She saved the baby sea turtle from the birds and helped it get to the water rather than going after the shell. Te Ka couldn't be defeated by Maui's own power(I think because a demigod couldn't defeat a true goddess, even a corrupted one), but she could be restored through Moana's compassion.

Two points I'd like to call out, First: Maui sinks like a stone, it's even the last stanza of his song: 'Hey, it's your day to say you're welcome; 'Cause I'm gonna need that boat; I'm sailing away, away; You're welcome! 'Cause Maui can do *anything but float* ' So, there is the possibility that his tattoo is actually his people reaching out because he was lost overboard.
Second: Originally, the character of Hei Hei was to be reveled as actually a wind god, counter to the Ocean helping Moana, but the storyline was scrapped because the producers thought her having two intelligent pets [Pua and Hei Hei] were too much, but they left all the interactions in the movie, they just dumped the dialogue that explained it, this is why whenever you see Hei Hei, the chicken is either conveniently standing on important information, like on Maui's island, or doing something to subtly help Moana, like eating the heart to try to keep it from the Kakamora.

I love this movie and the soundtrack to it is just amazing. I don't know if you noticed, but in the lyrics of 'You're welcome' Maui even sings that he's taking her boat. So sneaky. I also love that there isn't even a true antagonist. Yo u think Maui could be, but he ends up helping her and the lava monster (I forgot her name) isn't even evil at all she's just like that because her heart was taken.

Oh, I'm so, SO happy that you watched this and that I was around to see it! I only discovered your channel a short while ago, but just based on what I've seen you react most strongly to, I KNEW this one was gonna vibe strongly with you! Thank you so much for leaving it long, it was a delight to see this again through your eyes and to get your reactions to some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard, and my GOD, the scenery, the animation, the characters!! I don't know about other people's feelings about You're Welcome, I'm on board with you on the "it's fine but the others are much better" boat, and although I have a lot of 'favorites', I believe I'd have to say "Know Who You Are" is my favorite - the tears just silently rolled down my cheeks while that one played the first time I watched it! "I Am Moana" and "We Know The Way" and "How Far I'll Go" are also wonderful heart-moving songs, and for comedic songs, I prefer "Shiny" to "You're Welcome".
Also, being a middle-aged woman, grandma is so very much the type of woman I aspire to be as I age, she's SO amazing! I love that the lesson wasn't "keep trying because that's who you are and the world depends on you so you're responsible for it", it's "listen, it's a big ass world, there are lots of choices, they're yours to make, yours to be proud of or regret, and the best thing we can do for you as you grow into yourself is to continue to love you, the core YOU who is the same throughout all your growing and changing and mistaking and mending and learning, and listen, even if the fate of the entire world LITERALLY rests on your shoulders, it's okay that you say "no", we'll STILL love you, because that's an insanely unreasonable expectation to place on anyone."
And yes, I also delight in the Maui/Moana pairing. I loved the sister/sister vibe in Frozen, I ADORE that they're moving away from the traditional male/female/onetruelove formula. I'd really appreciate it if they'd go further (e.g. I was REALLY disappointed when they didn't follow through with Elsa being gay in Frozen 2 as many were hoping), but what they *are* trying as far as "outside the (formerly incredibly formulaic) box", I like and want to see more of.

This is one of the most beautiful and moving movies, animated or not, to ever come out. I LOVE this soundrack, even more than Tangled or Frozen. Together those three movies represented for me a new Disney Renaissance even better than the late 80's-late 90's. That one pulled Disney out of a rut where they had become almost a joke, just treading water at best and reusing the same animation cells from earlier movies with new characters painted over them. It pushed them in to a new era of quality AND creativity. This new wave, though, has taken a studio moving along strongly to new heights of art, technical ability, and creativity, and until they hit the pandemic it felt like they were only going up. I hope they don't lose too much momentum from everything that's happened, because I want more movies as good as or even better than Tangled/Frozen/Moana.

She was the one who left the village, she was the one to find Mowui, she was the one who got his hook back, she was the one who helped him give him confidence to use his hook again, and she brought him to Te Fiti. The Ocean Chose HER... And then being told it chose WRONG.

The toddler walk into the waves was a first Call to Adventure, and her first (but failed) attempt to cross the reef was the first crossing of the Threshold, and is meant to test her courage and willpower. Oh and no the lady on the ancestors ship wasn't the grandma. Her people have been on that Island since Mowie took the heart. That was 1000 years ago. I was really excited for this movie ever since I saw the first teaser because it looked so beautiful although I kept forgetting it was called Moana and called it the Maui movie cause the trailer focused on him and I had no idea who she was lol. When I went to see it in theaters I remember that I really liked it but I didn't like most of the songs probably because they felt so different to any other Disney songs. My mom and sister did like the songs tho and would play the whole soundtrack on repeat all the time so they definitely grew on me. Now I really like them. My favorites are "You're Welcome" and "Shiny" so I found it pretty funny that those were the ones you didn't like as much. The scene with Moana's grandma is easily the best in the movie imo, it's so powerful to see that when Maui has left her alone and she's giving up, her grandma comes to remind her who she is. Sometimes when you are feeling defeated and like you can't go on, you have to look back at what you've done to get where you are and how far you've come.

Your welcome and Shiny dont particularly match the rest of the movie but thats sort of by design because those two songs are about people outside humanity with the biggest discrepency being the one sung by a monster in the realm of monsters completely outside the realm of moanas tribe. Grandma turns into a Manta ray, not a stingray. They're very different creatures. Manta rays feed on plankton. Stingrays feed on fish and crustaceans. Stingrays are bottom swimmers, Manta rays are open ocean swimmers. Mantas also don't have the barb that stingrays do.
