"Silencio Bruno!" Sorry, wrong movie. Wonder if that was foreshadowing from the "other studio".
I love every single song in this movie. Usually, theres at least one song in a Disney movie that is forgettable or I just think is uninteresting enough that I'd probably skip it in the future("In Summer"from "Frozen"and so forth), but each one of these just gets me lost in the lyrics.
I love that in "We Don't Talk About Bruno", Dolores's singing is understanding of Bruno's gift and how she can still hear him, foreshadowing that he's still there. And that you can see him slipping around in the background(29:05) and dancing to the lyrics during Dolores's part(29:16)and she hides him from Mirabel by turning her each time he slips by and the shapeshifting Madrigal Camilo portrays him as seven feet tall, while Bruno is actually shorter than his sisters).
Bruno is voiced by John Leguizamo(AKA Sid the Sloth for you Nick. :) )

What I love about Luisa is that she’s super strong and buff, but also very feminine with her dress and hair ribbons. So many “tough girl” characters reject the “girly” stuff and are portrayed as tomboys to get across they’re tough. But I think more girls need to be shown they can be strong without giving up girly things or their femininity!

      So true!!
People have this idea that having muscle = masculine. Which is just ridiculous. Being muscular is a body type, just like being skinny, or chubby, or fat, or curvy.
A person can be muscular and feminine! Body type has nothing to do with how someone chooses to present themselves.
So I'm happy Encanto dodged the whole "it's impossible for a girl to be strong and be feminine" ideal. So rare to see lmao

Edit: I'm just a white guy making an observation with what I learned from high school Spanish.
A joke I missed in this movie was when the father tried to keep the secret of the magic dying, but his niece heard him, and was going to tell everyone, he says "Miercoles". Which means "Wednesday", but the joke is that it almost sounded like he was going to say "Mierda" which means "shit". But it's a PG movie, so they faked us out. It doesn't make sense in English, but in Spanish, it's a play on words, like a pun.

Mirabel doesn't need a gift. That's kind of the whole point of the movie. But She is probably more connected with the Casita than anyone else. She's the glue holding the family together.

    • @thefluffyaj4119
      @thefluffyaj4119 2 роки тому +73

I think the casita just helps her out more. or it's just cuz we follow her more than other characters, the casita could be helping others just as much
but yea, I don't think she has a gift, and she doesn't need one to be arguably one of the most important characters. her "power" doesn't come from a supernatural force and it's not given to her, it's straight up just her kindness and understanding nature. *she* is the gift
she is basically the one that protects the miracle. by allowing everyone to realize what's truly important, why they have the miracle in the first place. she doesn't have a gift, but without her the others wouldn't have their gifts. or rather, without her, they family would fall apart. also, MIRAbelle, MIRAcle
I love this movie for having the mc not need any power or something magically given to them. she herself is enough to save the day, she doesn't need a special gift or a magical object, she's perfect how she is. even if she's not like the others. if every puzzle piece was the same they couldn't make a beautiful picture. a lot have movies have tried to illustrate that point but I feel like encanto was the closest I've ever seen to actually show that in a clear and powerful way. all other characters are either made important by a gift they were given instead of themself being the important thing, or they aren't given a gift and they're actual importance on the story isn't all that great

@@pepper952 It’s not literal. The most explicit messages in this movie relate to the absolute toxicity of dubbing a child “gifted” and other children “not gifted”. ‘Surface Pressure’ and ‘What Can I Do’ are about the unhealthy expectations forced upon “gifted”people while ‘Waiting on a Miracle’ is about how the other side of the coin (of course sprinkled in with Mirabel’s hopeful optimism).
It’s (very likely) supposed to be more metaphorical and, at least in my opinion, viewing it as a very literal piece completely distracts from some of the most important messages in the film.

The way to fix the family miracle was for Mirabel and her abuela to empathize with one another. This is pretty much Mirabel's journey throughout the movie:
      •Empathize with Antonio
      •Empathize with Luisa
      •Empathize with Bruno
      •Empathize with Isabela
      •Empathize with Abuela
So many character repressing their thoughts and feelings was breaking the miracle. By getting everyone to confess their true feelings and desires and empathizing with them, and ultimately them empathizing with her too, and with each other, fixed the miracle. It's a beautiful message.

    • @nekomimianimelover
      @nekomimianimelover 2 роки тому +14

@@jsnrvst Exactly! Mirabel had to work through her own feelings, and knowing her family each have their own problems helped with that. Like in the beginning if she had run over to be a part of the picture her family would have been fine with it but she herself needed to come to terms with her feelings and her family needed to realize that while they love Mirabel they were treating her differently and they needed to see its been hard for her too. Everyones problems needed to be said out loud before anything could get fixed, patching the cracks was only delaying the inevitable, they needed to start from the ground up.

I kinda love how this movie sorta ended with the mc discovering they had a magical gift, but it manifested in a different way than they expected. I usually sorta dislike when they don’t have powers, like in that one Disney channel movie, where it felt like the only purpose the mc had was to save his family from very special circumstances. Or when the power comes out late, and it’s actually the “best one”. Here her magic and her abilities are the same as the grandmother’s, essentially having the skills and ability to connect to the house and candle, and ties into her personality. The fact the house was, in a way, her door, was so good.

    • @thefluffyaj4119
      @thefluffyaj4119 2 роки тому +88

same! like, I thought she was gonna do a cliche and actually get a power that helps her in her darkest moment. but I don't even think she got a power, bk the house isn't controlled by people. it's a living thing that helps and interacts with everyone
I think the whole point of her was that she doesn't have a power, but she never needed one. she is just as important as the rest, she holds the family together. she literally keeps the miracle alive and allowed everyone to keep their own gifts, but most importantly she bring them together and taught them what's really important. I think that's why her name is MIRAbelle, because she keeps the MIRAcle alive
unlike other powerless protags her "power" is not a power, but at the same time all the other powers wouldn't exist without her. that's extremly important and is arguably the most important "power". but not in a cliche way, this "power" fits very well thematically. I always felt this movie does a really good job of illustrating it's theme well and actually feeling genuine about it

I think what's different about this Disney movie is that it starts out seeming so positive and healthy! In the past, the whole _point_ of the Disney movie would BE Mirabel "discovering" that she doesn't need a gift to be special. But in this movie, she starts out already knowing that. So, what could be wrong?
Well, it turns out the _positivity_ is _fake,_ and that's wrong. Everything is cracking, and because everyone in the family knows they have to be positive, helpful, serving, and... _perfect,_ no one addresses the generational trauma. That's _SO much deeper_ than most of the messages of Disney's recent movies. They've all been obvious from the first ten minutes.
    Not this one.
My family is healthy now, thank God, but for most of my childhood and teens, we were very much a "perfect on the outside" family, and we all felt the pressure of maintaining that image.
My older sister couldn't handle it, so she rebelled and left, and when that was swept under the rug, *_*I*_* was swept into the position of the oldest sister. "Surface Pressure" and the plight of the two oldest daughters are so relatable to me: feeling like I had to hold everyone together by being the perfect and good and strong and Right daughter my parents needed.
    MAN, this movie got me.
AND DISNEY GOT THEIR MAGIC BACK. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT.

I love how the race to save the candle shows exactly how Mirabelle differs from her family and why she is the one who made it to the candle.
The others who run to the candle are Isabella and Camillo.
Isabella does what she did her whole life. She relied on her powers to get round and ignored the Casita, the friend that she needed to reach the candle. When her power was taken, she lost what she was used to and became helpless.
Camillo gets around using his shifting, and actually is shown treating the Casita as more of an obstacle than a potential ally.
They used their gifts and never relied on their Casita through their lives.
But Mirabelle befriended the Casita. She asked the Casita for help, and it wasn't the obstacle it was for the others, but instead worked with her to help her reach her goal.
This also reinforces her role in the story. Her unofficial power is the ability to form connections with those around her. A gift that never failed her even when other gifts are lost.

Another fact is that Bruno has involuntary visions, which is also how he found out his gift. And by those visions he sometimes can't sleep, that's why he has dark circles in his eyes.

Right now I'm guessing that because Abuela/Alma had three children to raise on her own and she never went back to the river either because she never felt ready to do so or because she didn't have time to do so she wasn't able to properly mourn Pedro. And maybe she even started focusing on the family being 'perfect' and focused on the miracle that took place afterwards so that she wouldn't have time to focus on his actually being killed or on the fact that she still misses him and would've wanted to live a regular life with him and their children even with no gifts, no miracles and no magic. Oh, and in case you haven't seen In the Heights yet, it's another of Lin-Manuel's work you need to see. It came out 5 months prior to Encanto. I have to say Lin-Manuel has been expressing his songwriting skills in a few projects in 2021. They're amazing!

I had the same reaction too! I expected the movie to have mediocre representation, plot, and half-assed characters. I was so surprised when I watched it, the plot was definitely rushed a bit since it needed to be an hour, but I loved every single second of it. Every character showed so much depth and personality in such a small amount of time. The subtle details of their behaviors and relationships, the showcase of culture, every single thing in this movie was crafted with pure love and care.
I need a slice-of-life TV series about the Madrigals, a second movie, ANYTHING. I just want to see Disney expand more of Encanto with content we couldn’t see in the movie. I want to know more about the triplets’ relationship with each other, I want to know more about how the grandkids bond with each other. When Abuela finally removed the pressure that was put on them, what did they do next? What kind of things will they try? What kind of people will they become? *_I need more._*

    Another little detail, at 20:25:
When Isabela hears about the five children, she sprouts flowers; most of them pink, but one white. Note how Abuela picks out the white one and throws it away. It's a small sign of how she constantly critiques and corrects people. Even the magical flowers have to be color coordinated.

Next to Spiderman No Way Home, this is definitely my second best movie of the year. Coco was in my top 5 Disney movies ever, and to see another movie come as close as it could to that experience again regarding themes of family and hispanic culture, this was such a wonderful surprise. Even though I come from Mexico and not Colombia, the part with the Abuela's backstory really resonated with me because it reminded me of my mom coming to the United States at a young age alone to seek more opportunities, and give us a good life. She always works so hard, and I ended up taking after her which in part made me relate to Isabela. Being the firstborn, always trying to live up to expectations, and be a perfectionist, it really made me miss out on a lot in my teenager years. That's why graduating felt like such a liberating experience, and made me feel alive. I digress. I love this movie, and I hope Disney, the higher ups, and all the people who make it possible embrace more of that direction in storytelling. It's so good!

I’m from Colombia and I just love that they included such an important topic as violence and forced migration in this movie. This is a problem that many people still suffer and has and impact in my country even now. It’s important to note the generational divide created by the violence as it is seen in this movie, older generations, the ones who suffered more directly from this violence, are still affected by what happened to them and the violence they were subjected to. This trauma has definitely shaped the way we as a younger generation were educated and that trauma has passed on from generation to generation as a result (as it is apparent in the movie). I find that this film encapsulates very well the struggles we young people face in Colombia: trying to let go of that trauma while finding a balance between our past and our future.

Pepa has spent basically her whole life being made to feel she has to suppress any negative emotions, pressure which will only have got worse after her wedding because there's a tangible example of what happens when she doesn't.
Julieta has been forced into being responsible for the entire town's physical well being. Imagine how much time she has to spend cooking to have enough for everyone's problems!
And Camilo could well end up feeling like he's only of use when he's literally anybody else but himself.

In my view this is definitely in my top three of Disney Movies so far. I can also deeply identify with Mirabel since I'm autistic and therefore different from the rest of my family, which is actually no bad thing at all, but it can be really difficult a lot of the time and my mom for example doesn't even try to understand me and society in general tries to push everyone to be something we're just not. So what if I'm not what people want me to be? I'm just different and I don't need anyone to fix me or tell me who I am. I just see the world differently from another perspective but I wouldn't want it any other way.
I just think everyone should be treated equally and get a chance to show who they truly are and not have to try to fit into an already broken world.

Why should people feel the need to take these things away from them, when it’s clearly something that they enjoy, or find comfort in/ feel discomfort when stopped? It’s that person’s life, not yours.
I’m just so incredibly lucky to have such an understanding and supportive family, that actively accomodates me, making sure that I always get the unloading the dishwasher chore and not the loading part, because the greasy feel on my hands distresses me.

Camilo and Isabella lose their powers as they are trying to reach the candle and the house saves them from serious injuries. Mirabela is the only one who gets to it in time because she does not have powers and is used to getting to places on her own without them. It shows that in the end, it's not about powers or magic- that's not what defines them or what is special about them. What is special is them being just the way they are or however they want to be. They don't need a gift or need to try to prove themselves to show that they can be useful or have a purpose

45:23 I just now realized the reason only Mirabel could make it to the candle successfully was because she was the only one not relying on powers. Isabela and Camilo both fell because the crutches of their powers failed and they did not know how to save the house without them. Another thing demonstrating the point that the other family members saw their powers as the only thing they could do. Mirabel's lack of power ends up actually making her more capable than the rest of her family.

Watching your reaction helped me realize that, Mirabel's power is like her Grandma's. They're the candle, the anchor for the magic. (You'll notice, Abuela also doesn't have a power.) Magic deemed Mirabel worthy as the new successor of that role, but it's not her time to takeover yet cause Abuela was alive and well. And magic was weakening and falling apart because Abuela lost sight of what's important.

Something I don’t see a lot of people comment on is that the triplets are 50 years old. Bruno left when Mirabel was 5. So that means Bruno was 40 when he left. Like, he’s just been out of the family for a whole decade, living in the walls, watching his nieces and nephews grow, watching his family grieve his departure.

32:55 WOW I watched this movie twice but never noticed that Mirabel, in her desperation and panicked state of mind, blamed Bruno’s gift for the disastrous evening! She’s such a kind, empathetic person but the whole village’s negativity toward Bruno (who was basically the boogeyman equivalent of the community) had rubbed off on her!

Encanto is such a special movie to me. My step-family is Colombian so it holds a special place just for that. But also because I relate to Mirabel on a personal level. Her treatment as falling into an awkward spot in her family that leads her to getting overlooked or dismissed or forgotten about is similar in some ways to how I fall in my family: too American for the German side, too American for the Colombian side, and a 6th wheel when I visit my dad and stepmom and their family (separated parents deal). I love them, and I know they love me, but sometimes it can feel like you just don’t belong and working through that to grow closer to your family is an ever changing and ever lasting task but can be so rewarding in the end.
Also Encanto is the only movie that made me laugh, then cry, then laugh, then cry back to back like that within the first 10-15 minutes when I first saw it. That definitely means something at least.

There are mixed messages in this story: should the family listen to Mirabel? Or should Mirabel shut up, conform, and leave like Bruno did?
That's what Bruno's vision shows: either the family listens and the house cracks and it's rebuilt... or Mirabel shuts up and leaves and the family paints over the cracks and keeps going without the "break" (Mirabel) in the family.
It's all up to Mirabel: be herself... or "conform".

The argument between Mirabel and Abuela gives me goosebumps every time. Also, Luisa’s song hit me hard. I’m the youngest yet I’m stuck in the middle between my parents and brother... I get a huge emotional burden from both.

I just realized that Bruno was only ever able to watch Antonio grow up through the cracks in the paintings.
