The production on this album is just incredible, the drums just cut through so clear and Curse you all men has the be one of the greatest opening tracks of any album ever.

Emperor's magnum opus, in my opinion. Many say Anthems and i have nothing to say about that, but i think this was even better and more sophisticated. Better production too, although the buzzing of the guitars can be overwhelming. Great record from beginning to end, fantastic compositions, riffs and Trym's drumming. Of Blindness & Subsequent Seer, the title track, An Elegy Of Icaros, Decrystallizing Reason, such awesome atmosphere. Brings back a lot of memories from those days, time flies unfortunately but music is like a time's machine, it can take us where we want.

But while Dimmu Borgir were good, i always thought Emperor did it better. More sophisticated, less cheesy, more atmospheric, more subtle.

Thrash Metal, Black Metal, Death Metal, Grind core, Metal core, Deathcore and Metallic Hardcore are considered "extreme metal", even some Doom Metal bands, mainly Funeral Doom Metal bands
Yeah, you can see how it progresses towards Prometheus, and ultimately Ihsahn's self titled solo debut. Beyond that first of his solo projects, it gets pretty far into proggy-mathy, I guess.
Literally every UA-cam metal album video has a comment by someone saying it's "underrated". Liking an album and not everyone else in the world doing the same doesn't make it underrated.
I would say this is one of their most ambitious albums. Mixing is a little bit muddled and being medieval and epic was already been done in the previous record and - that was what I thought when it first came out.
I'll never grow tired of this band, listening to them now I'd say for the best part of 15 years and the songs still sound fresh. My favourite band of all time
Mighty Mighty Emperor at the highest Point of their creative path! There are bands more complex and faster, but no one in this world shows more musicality. The parts of the Songs are like they organically grew out of each other, every drumfill is different, gitars expressing fastness by Special Tremolo effects and sounds like laser (of blindness and subsequent seers)... endless examples i could write here! I celebrated this Album in the 90s when it came out. For me, they blasted cradle of filth away, wich i adored before. The prometheus Album has a few aspects further developed than here, but i heared, that, when they did it,they were a bit frustrated and that the decision was allready made to put an end to emperor after this. Somehow, i can hear that on Prometheus. When they made lX Equilibrium, there was a rumor that emperor considered them selfes not to come from this world... this is, what iove to hear!!!
...and there are many songs incredible and great but " of blindness and subsequent seers" is the crown. (By the way, i took the name of Bruce Lee because i train his jeet kune do fighting system. At 31:45 you can hear the same bell ringing like in "For whom the bell tolls" by Metallica. Excellent album by Emperor, as usual! Its great to see their development from raw and cruel to cristalclear composing close to orchestral character without any disappointments.
This is the second best album by Emperor right after "In the nightside eclipse" in my opinion. I'm always blown away by "the source of icon E". Love it
Well there's ITNE, and different Emperor ( Anthems and IX Equilibrium are very similar) so I view it separately! Of course everything is subjective opinion and matter of preference. I love Emperor, In the Nightside Eclipse is best symphonic Black Metal album, just insane! Then there's the Anthems and IX Equilibrium which are very good but in a way it's like another band! Anyway Emperor is great music 🤘🏿
It's interesting you say that because Samoth injected a lot of his Death Metal styling into this album. At the time, Samoth wanted to move more towards DM and Ihsahn wanted to stick with their style of BM which is what led to the eventual split of the band. Listen to this right after World ov Worms by Zyklon (which also had Trym on Drums) and you'll see some uncanny similarities.

RAAAAARGH!" 🤘🤬🤘. honestly thought I might have grown out of the blackest of metals.but it's hard to shake that addiction once ur already hooked on that wasp-in-a-bucket style riffage n don't forget bout them double bass drrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrums!. although in my (slightly) older age I cud probly do with more clean/operatic vocals in the black metals.dont get me wrong I luv a good strategicly placed shriek or grunt as much as the next dude.but the frequency of all those abrasive regular vocals do tend to grate on my middle aged brain after 15min or so 😭

The best vocals of Ihsahn were on the debut album of the band, another great performance of best vocals by Ihsahn can be found on the song Of Blindness & Subsequent Seers, this song contains also two fine guitar solos, this album was my first introduction to Emperor, of course i found later all their albums and also saw them live twice in 2006 and 2014, and i'm following also after Ihsahn solo career, this album has a great importance for me since it was the album that introduced me with black metal, this album is fantastic and i can't understand the disppointment of others, thanks for sharing,

This album came out in 1999 and that year I was bombarded by Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock. What a treasure this album is.

Just ordered the this and anthems as they were recently reissued :)
Might not be the favorite album for people who like raw lofi black metal (me) its still good but most is they are very good musicians masters of their craft they took black metal to a beautifully sophisticated level

How about "In the nightside eclipse"? Besides all three of them are great pieces of BM.
Anthems is definitely better than this but it's still solid
nightside is the realest. this one is really really great but sort of lacks cohesion and its a bit overwrought at times. anthems seems like a pretty good middle ground. but yeah... nightside is the realest.
