The bassist is a calm and humbled guy. Don't expect too much energy from him with the crowd. He also avoids all the interviews Muse giving in order to stay with his family. (6 kids)

their live performances get better and better with age, in both quality and audience interaction. They were very young in this so its understandable that their stage presence wasn't quite as developed

Muse have never really interacted with the audience, in one of their early performances Matt tries to interact with the audience but says he never knows what to say, so often he doesn't. I found he says more with the audience in the earlier years. I feel like this and earlier performances are way more intense and passionate, if you look at the crowd you'll see them responding to that. I don't understand or see what you mean by stage presence?

Great review! Thanks DH. This was verrrry early Muse so they were still developing their live chops which I think you’ve seen by now has gone to new levels. Chris the bassist actually does sing on the chorus here but he’s never been the type of bassist that moves around like Flea. Maybe this is why Muse has always been so tight live…Chris literally never fucks up and you know how the bass is key and drives most Muse songs.
One thing I wish you addressed was how Matt added some delay and distortion to his second mic, making his falsetto sound like an electric guitar solo! Thought that was genius.
That said, I would love if you checked out the recorded version and let us know here in comments what you think? I don’t think anyones requesting that now that the live version is out and it Would be cool to hear your thoughts.

Yes, Matt playing lead guitar on his vocal chords while banging out the chords on his guitar. Certainly a unique thing (or at least, I don't think I've seen that with any other artist).

amassaic, thanks for all your muse requests!!!
As for Matt on the 2nd mic, he may not have noticed because the camera didn't really focus on Matt switching between mics (too many camera cuts)

I don't know much about music theory but I do know that the intro melody is 8th beats on the studio version which might explain why it's interesting when played in 16ths. I think in the video he starts in 8ths and then changes after a couple seconds

Well if it does get blocked I'm glad I got home from work with enough time to wind down to it, cos once again both the song and the reaction delivered. Old school Muse takes you places no other band can take you that's for sure ... Love your work once again Mr Heretic!

  • @wewantthecup

Matt changes a lot of little things live vs. studio, and much of those guitar parts are improv (which I love) so the bassist (Chris) may have just needed to stay focused to keep up with the flow. I dunno. Speculating. Chris's stage presence has grown over the years, that's for sure.
I loved your reaction to this. I didn't think you'd give this an 8, never mind 8.7

  • @GT.Bugger

I feel like lowering the score based on the performance is unfair, Chris has never really interacted with the crowd and you've never brought it up before. Like you said it didn't effect the song. I agree that if the band are into the music it is reflected in the audience but it didn't seem to effect all the people their as you mentioned.

I much prefer these earlier performances from Muse, before they turned into stadium rockers.Don't get me wrong, their stadium gigs are incredible, but sometimes there's too much theatrics which can take away from enjoying their musicianship.

OK OK personally, I don't think you feel Muse at all. You always seem cold about them. It's cool, if you don't like them that much, maybe stop reacting? You give "high scores" sometimes but I don't feel it. Just my opinion dood, music is subjective :)
