All that smoke is preservative oil being burned off, any time you place an engine into long term storage you have to coat every bit of metal in the engine with an anti corrosive oil. What you are seeing is normal, it's that engine had a thicker coat of oil.
When I was in the USFA we called in "pickling juice" or a "pickled engine" but yes it is preservation oil .... You should see how much smoke comes from a C-5 engine (TF-39)
I don't know when the engines were last started, but the plane last took off in 2011. edit: the website says that they start the engine regularly since 2019.
Fantastic capture! May I feature this engine start in one of my next episodes? Of course with a link back to your original video. All the best to you :)
Sure, but you should know that I have send the video to lucaas too. I have not heard back from him and personally I would not mind If you both feature the video. So decide yourself :)
Auxiliary Power Unit. Effectively a small turbine with generator which enables the aircraft to have its own power source at startup or ground running without an external power source
Hey Daniel, do you have an email address we can use to contact you regarding this video? I'd love to discuss a license to use this if possible! Cheers, Felix

Awesome video, thanks for submitting it to Weekly Dose of Aviation!

I doubt the museeum is doing this for cost reasons

Great to see she's not a mere derelict, but a living aircraft
It's alive...it's alive!!!

That's the coolest leaf blower I've ever seen 😁
Black and Decker 😂
It would be cool to see her fly again.
Looks like its been in moth ball like forever.

Watched this in Speyer, campsite behind on the left.
With all those guys standing there staring at it the old plane was probably having a little performance anxiety.
It looks like a 2 engine version of the C 130 Hercules.
Nope; different shapes...
Ist eine C130
War bem LTG62 4 Jahre als Soldat
Sorry, C160😊
Boy, I sure wouldn't want to depend on this thing for a fast getaway.
I have a Bedford TM ex military the smokes the same at startup. Kind of a British thing.
Need a longer pull cord to start the engine.
Imagine it accidentally moved, it would be terrifying
Is the left engine being run in Beta ? Stuff on the ground is blowing the wrong way !!
Blades are turned as they would be for moving in reverse as well as reverse thrust on landing.
The props are feathered.
I'm surprised there's no fire extingushers near by !?!?
The plane is unable to fly. She is only a static-display!
Warum lässt man das Flugzeug dort so vergammeln?
Both engines have stopped. But the noise remains. How come ?

Greta thunberg just had a fit 😂😂
I shared the video with the Swedish princess just now.

Simple. That´s anti corrosive oil which produces a lot of smoke
Right engine needs new spark plugs.
Almost like too much waterin the fuel!
Needs some start spray, lol 😂Vivian Hyde 😊
Someone needs to get out and push...😂

I'm surprised by your knowledge of air crafts the c160 was a two engine version of the c130 it had reverse pitch props that could push k to backwords
than you will have to improve your knowledge. The Transall is not a twin Herkules. Different designs ;)
