- Reciprocating piston engines power many of the low to moderate-performance aircraft, making them a popular choice for general aviation and some unmanned aerial vehicles. These engines are liked for their durability, affordability, fuel efficiency, and solid performance. While piston-engine planes are usually slower than jet-engine planes, there are a few piston-powered planes that push the limits and compete with the speeds of jet aircraft. Therefore here are the fastest piston-engine planes that rival the jet-powered planes in the world.

Maybe "Here are some random planes and some of them are fast" would be a better title? Because the list makes no sense.
I was fortunate to own and fly a Piper Aerostar for 12 years. I purchased her as a 601B and then gave her the Machin upgrade to convert her to a Superstar 700. 240kts straight & level cruise at 12000ft, even faster higher up. She was an absolute delight to fly, To minimise the danger of single-engine failure on take-off I would not rotate until reaching 90kts. She was without question the Hangar Queen wherever I parked her. Ted Smith certainly designed the very best. Mid-wing -- perfect aerodynamics. I got my PPL in 1967. I became a little too old to fly and sadly sold her. I delight in the memories to this day.
this is scare, my cat sad
What was the Machin upgrade? Was it larger engines? 240kts is pretty fast. I’m glad you enjoyed her!
@@Tubesmaney The standard 601B had twin turbo so-called normalisers that maintained effectively sea level power at higher altitudes. The Machin upgrade consisted of a few things but the performance came from low-compression engines with twin tuborchargers, intercooler, and larger props. At 18000ft she could get better than 280kts.
Machen….
@@stevehicks8944 Correct, stupid me, thank you.......
It must have been difficult finding the very slow jets
"Over the years Cessna has made significant advancements in 310R's technology and avionics" ....they stopped production in 1987
1983. The 310 was replaced by the 303.
It would help if he could pronounce the names of the aircraft correctly😂
definitely not the record holding twin piston, but cool video, in ww2 there was production and many experimental twin piston with near 2000hp on each engine pushing almost 500 mph with 400+ Cruise.
The Bearcat could do that with one engine. 500+
the aerostar is the only one that belongs in this video. Lots of singles faster than most of these now.
Father owned owned one, great A/C for trips from FLL to CHT. Was such a smooth easy to fly twin. Unfortunately sold it for a Swift to start an acrobatic team.
1st example top speed 220. I’ll stop here.
Thats a streach for a 337 Cessna they are loud and slow maybe down hill it could hit 220
Just forgot the Beech Duke.
Yes, pressurized with a cruize capability to 30000 feet The Duke can cruise at 250 knots, with a long range cruise speed of 210 kt.
The unique engines are the Lyc. TIO 541 with a rated power of 376 HP.
etc .
TIO-541-E1A4 and TIO-541E1B6 engines are rated at 375hp. These engines are NOT known for their reliability or their low cost of operation. I have seen ONE SET actually achieve their 1600 hr TBO; all the others started “making metal” around 1100-1200 hours. Cruizing? Let me guess; English isn’t your first language? CRUISING…
The Duke has a service ceiling of 28,000 feet. Have I mentioned I used to work for Beech Aircraft Corporation?
@@stevehicks8944 Absolutely, The cost of replacing an Airconditioning belt on the Dukes right engine was about $3000.00 in 1990 Dollars. 😧
with io-720s😂
The firsy one is the Super Skymaster, the one with retractable landing gear C-337
"Rivals jet planes". You mean like the Messerschmidt BF 109?
skymaster is slow as molasses , not even in the same ballpark as any jet. No fixed gear aircraft is setting any speed records even close to the most basic citation....This has to be the most inaccurate, silly video on aircraft performance I have seen in the last 20 years.
Agreed
I agree
I own a 501SP and could not agree more!
Same with the Technam. Slow as dogshit
My grandfather had Cessna 310, 340, 414 and 421 all with the Ram Conversions. He eventually went turbine then turbofan with the big boy Cessna.
I didn't realize that jets have become so slow.
Which jet powered aircraft do these compete with? It would be much better to say that these can compete with SOME JET RC aircraft, and to think, I was ALMOST going to subscribe....
Be careful with The Beechcraft Baron as some have the Throttle Levers (Manifold Pressure) and RPM Levers (Pitch) the opposite way round.
The skymaster is awesome & i 2nd the beechcraft baron
Love to own a skymaster always been my favorite model
I had a 1969 turbo-normalized Cessna 310P. It was plenty fast, but nowhere near the speed of turbojet aircraft.
If you consider the Jetranger a Jet then all these planes are really faster than a Jet- ranger.
What slow jets are you thinking of? A Citation I is 320KTS which is 368 MPH and is considered to be one of the slowest jets out there.
If the Seneca had two additional engines, that would make it a tri-motor
The prototype did have 3 engines
I only got to fly two twin pistons . One was the 310, I miss it.
How in the hell can you suggest that 210 knots can rival ANY jet?
Anybody catch the 2 second clip at 11:13 of the jet powered commander whilst talking about the piston version?
Tecnam... Designed by the Partnavia team... "Parnavia" short for 'ComaapartonYa"
Twins have twice the chance of losing one ,get your feet ready😊
How did N11111 end up in this video? It was shot n my hangar with the American flag in the background
Most jets come over the fence at the top speeds of piston twins.
use turboprop engines, designed for rotary power generation
Title reeks of extreme bogusity. How about- the Aerostar rivals the slower turboprop speeds? None of these aircraft rival even the slowest jet speeds. That said, I really enjoyed the aviation footage.
The ONLY one of these piston twins that CAN exceed 250 KTS is the Aerostar 700; good luck finding one, as Piper built fewer than 100 aircraft.
Fail. You get SO many details wrong, and you don't seem to know WTF you are talking about.
While I agree with many of the comments here, my issue is that he gave maximum speeds but who flies that way? More appropriate would have been to state the speed at 65% power where most of them are flown. But then they wouldn’t come close to any jet.
None of these aircraft compare with a Jet. Tubo-props maybe. Piper Seneca gets bird strikes in the tail.
None of these aircraft come even close to rivaling the performance of personal/privately owned jet aircraft. Making the title rather clickbaitish. Glasair, in the 1990s, offered a homebuilt aircraft which, when fitted with a Corvette engine, was good for just over 300 mph.
Narrator's pronunciation is sketchy. Mispronounced Lycoming and Navajo.
You forgot some faster piston powered airplanes, eg Columbia 400 ,single engine 235 knots at FL 250
And ATC will absolutely hate that speed at the flight levels. An old MU2 Solitaire or Marquis does 300+ at FL160 to FL240.
I can't believe this mispronounced Navaho.
I doubt the diamond has diesel engines!
It does
Read more; ignorantly opine less.
Lol…tough crowd.
Sky Master has I/O 360 continental engines not I/O 300
A Mixmaster, fast, not hardly.
Ha! You are not at the right airport.
The fastest does 330mph maximum, so slower than a 1940s P51 and nowhere near a jet.
Nice.
a 12 minute meaningless commercial
These are all quite slow.
Not even close to jet speeds. Do they have to lie to make a video?
First of all it’s pronounced four 0 two
Another amature site. O wait1 I get it! these are planes that rival the stall speed of slow jets. Ever get the feeling you're wasting your life watching these low content clips?
What a ridiculous title my pet hate.
No they are not! Do some serious research.
What a joke this vid is. Jet like speed maybe if you add a few of them together or a power on dive.
Hire a human narrator
Horrível ia generated
woke commercial
Cringey. So absurd, so wrong in about everything, it's funny. But still cringey.
Jeesh ! Introduce the Piper Cherokee 6 : With a Piper PA-28-141 in the image. Seriously ??
BTW. It's pronounced PISTON. Not Pissed-ON.
I'm sorry but the Piper Nav_aaa- Hoe.( I'm sure the Navajo Indians appreciate you consider pronunciation) PA-31-350 Was not as fast as an Aerostar 601P. The only Piper Produced that was as Fast was the P-Navajo. PA-31-425 with two TIGO-541-E1A engines producing 425 Horse Power. burning 23 Gallons per hour, Per engine.
Baron G 58 : "This versatile aircraft seating 6 " Sure with no fuel or baggage . With 6 adults on board it is a very expensive couch. Then of course you switch images all over the map. referring to a Piper Seneca as a beach G58 at time stamp 4:08 .😂With the name Seneca V clearly printed on the tail. Sloppy !😅
