    Its cool to note that you could play the original Resident Evil 1,2, 3 and Code Veronica, all on SEGA Hardware. You don't even need to get a Playstation or Gamecube.
    As a matter of fact, its probably better to get them on SEGA consoles anyway for the following reasons.
    1) The SEGA Dreamcast supports VGA output which has the best picture quality for Resident Evil games
    2) Resident evil 2 and 3 for the SEGA Dreamcast come with their own unique special features
    3) All of the Resident Evil games that came out after Code Veronica (Resident Evil Zero, Resident Evil Remake, and Resident Evil 4) all have had HD remakes on current and last generation systems making the progression seamless between the games in the series.

    Being a huge resident evil 1 fan I have to point out some things. First of all on the ps1 jill is the only one who gets 3 save ribbons, while chris gets 2 per pickup (and a lot less pickups). The original resident evil (non-directors cut) is the hardest of the ps1 versions. Capcom changed a few minor things for the directors cut and some enemies were nerfed, such as the hunters now die in one rocket launcher shot. They were trying to make certain enemies more vulnerable to certain weapons I believe, but it made the game slightly easier. Another thing to note is that the directors cut (non-dualshock version), has a problem. It does not work with the sony dualshock controller, which is pretty much standard. I had to use a 3rd party controller or a ps1 digital controller. Advanced/arrange mode is an interesting addition however I prefer the original. In advanced mode you will get a gun that blows zombies head off making all zombies incredibly easy. And as you stated never play the dualshock version with the game-wrecking music! Overall I choose the original resident evil ps1. I don't like enemies being nerfed even in a minor way, and the only other difference it seems is that chris is not smoking a cigarette in his intro. Someone else said that the zombies arms don't get blown off in the original, only the directors cut, I am not sure about that one. Thanks for the video I do want to play the saturn version, with more challenge (maybe) and the golden tyrant I never knew about that. I think that perhaps the saturn version is the same base game as the original ps1 release, but I do like a challenge, unfortunately not gonna buy a saturn just to play it probably. Original ps1 version with chris is already quite challenging. Play with Chris, it is much harder and scarier!

    Regarding the loading times between rooms on saturn I think you may need to check your disc or laser. The PSX version is faster but there is no way in hell my my copy is as slow as it is showing in your video, honestly. That's the only issue I take with this otherwise excellent video :) Great work.

    • @GamevsGame
      @GamevsGame  7 років тому +2

      i wondered the same thing, honestly, i had some other issues with my disc, but unfortunately for the saturn, that was my experience. I need the get the thing resurfaced and give it another go to see perhaps a more authentic RE Saturn experience.

      Best ep ever! I've always kind of like the look of the Saturn's dithering. It always just kinda reminds me of cool looking Saturn games, but yeah, PS1 wins for sure. On the plus side, the Saturn ver has a fucking cool ass box.

    • @GamevsGame
      @GamevsGame  7 років тому +1

      haha thanks Jared, i definitely don't have anything against dithering techniques, but getting into that generation it's surprising it was still around instead of using transparency effects. and yeah i never got the doom-vibe guy (presumably Chris) on the PS1 cover with the wonky eye, zombie on black is way more bad ass!

    Berry doesn't exactly have a different dialogue in the plant boss scene ( in the PS1 version), he says the same lines but with more enthusiasm. in the Saturn version he sounds like he just woke up and hasn't had his coffee yet. Very low and groggy sounding.

    The reason the Saturn version doesn't have translucency, is due to the lack of the use of the VDP2 chip. There are plenty of Saturn games that have translucency.

    If saturn games where well programmed. Transparency wasn't a problem. If you see panzer Dragoon zwei, sonic R. The last one wasn't even possible on ps1. But still, Resident Evil on Saturn is a great game.

    • @NiGHTSnoob
      @NiGHTSnoob 6 років тому +1

      Sort of, it wasn't really an issue of being "well programed", but more an issue of the way the Saturn composited the images generated by its two graphics processors together. While VDP2 can do true transparency it can't receive more data from VDP1 after the fact so it has to make do with the initially processed image from VDP1. VDP1 meanwhile cannot do transparency and generates everything as opaque, but VDP1 can tell VDP2 to make something transparent at the same time it hands over the image. The issue arises when an object from VDP1 needs to be behind another object from VDP1 that is flagged to be transparent. VDP2 essentially just receives a single flat image from VDP1 and then goes to work on it like Photoshop, and like I said it can't get more data from VDP1 at that point, so anything behind the transparent effect has to be generated by VDP2 or else it simply doesn't exist because VDP1 accidentally covered it up with an opaque "transparent" object before handing it off. The thing is VDP2 only handles the background in most cases, all the models and sprites are done by VDP1, so if they had tried to make the water in Resident Evil truly transparent Jill's/Chris's legs and the sharks would disappear below the water line because VDP1 drew the water opaque and then VDP2 turned it transparent later. The dithered mesh pattern is the only practical way around that problem.
      If you play through Radiant Emerald on Sonic R there's a part where you should be able to see another part of the track through the part that you're on, but while you can see it going under, it vanishes underneath the part you're on even though the whole track is transparent. This is because VDP1 generated the track as solid and opaque, and while VDP2 turned it transparent in relation to the background layers it couldn't go and rebuild that other part of the track that was covered up originally.

    The Saturn and PSX games are more similar than different. I understand why people would prefer the PSX version, although many people would prefer the Saturn controller and some people prefer the graphics. In the end of the day a hardcore fan of Resident Evil should get both consoles and games because you cannot get the complete experience by limiting yourself to one version of the game. Despite their extreme similarity they have a unique look and feel. The Saturn version is not a downgrade of the PSX version, just a different take on one of the most important games and arguably the most important mid 90's game.

      If you get a Saturn, you're better off getting hold of an ODE to play the games. Unfortunately the best Saturn titles can go for upwards of £150, and a quite appalling £500-1,000 for Panzer Dragoon Saga (I hate scalpers). I've got the original physical copy of RE for Saturn and Director's Cut for PSX. Funnily enough, they both cost me £45 each. The rest of my Saturn physical games collection (about 18 games in all) has some that cost £70+ each. My ODE though was £120 and that allows me to play hundreds of games via micro SD, it just depends on whether you want to own the actual games themselves I guess?

      the main thing is the greatest hits version has a completely different soundtrack from the original black label, which most people don't care for - i don't ave any experience with it, myself. the other big thing is that some of the green labels (i don't think all of them, just certain version numbers) offer dual shock controller support so you can use the analog stick to move instead of the d-pad.

    As a big RE fan, this was a very interesting vid. Though, I personally prefer the Dual Shock Director's Cut version. Yeah yeah, the soundtrack has a couple of pretty bad tracks (the one everybody loves to mock is the one for the kitchen) but 90% of it was pretty atmospheric and made the game even more immersive.
    If you're curious, I recommend listening to "Quieto" and "Quietamente", two tracks from the arranged soundtrack that I think are awesomely creepy. Just search for the arranged soundtrack album "Biohazard Symphony 91".

    "Saturn wasn't as capable as Playstation"
    No, it was as capable and could do things the PS1 could never do, it was the architecture, and SEGA not updating their graphics library/programming tools that held it back. Games like Sonic R, Burning Rangers, Panzer Dragoon, Quake and more proved that the hardware was very capable in the right hands.
    Even modern programmers are squeezing more out of it than ever, like XL2 - ua-cam.com/video/yI-dmi9T5vM/v-deo.html

      Just a white DVD case. I do the same for Sega CD, but with blue ones. Saturn and Sega CD stuff is way too pricey to spend on CIB, so I get disc only and print covers from thecoverproject.net for standard DVD cases.

    A more fair comparison would have been the original PS1 version instead of the Director's Cut version up against the Saturn version. I am glad you chose to stay away from ReMake for this video as I'm probably the only Resident Evil fan that absolutely hates ReMake. Visually I liked it but that's about it.

    saturn for clarity,
    saturn RGB signal and color better than ps1 on RGB colors
    saturn have faster changing camera with many places in the rooms in this game , it is faster and better thing , it make game more enjoyable , ps1 camera freeze the character some milliseconds then changed ,

    Why would you compare the Saturn version to the Director's Cut instead of RE Vanilla? On top of that the Vanilla RE PSX version is far superior to the shoddy directors cut. Director's Cut is so bad, it's sad.

    The Saturn definitely COULD handle transparencies, but unfortunately programmers were too lazy to get the best out of the console. Check out games like Panzer Dragoon Zwei/Saga, Duke Nukem, Quake, Exhumed, Shining Force 3, Dead it Alive, Grandia and others for the visuals potential it had. Nights was awesome too. Because PSX was easier to program 3D, everyone assumed Saturn was the weaker console, when in fact it was the better all round machine for 2D and 3D, and probably had more powerful specs on paper. It always frustrated me that it rarely got the attention and respect it deserved from game designers and the public. Don't get me wrong, I still own both machines, and they both have quality titles, along with the N64. I honestly feel like gaming went downhill after these machines (well, maybe after the Dreamcast, PS2 and Gamecube). Something about modern machines I just can't get into, as much as I try.
    You guys are part of keeping the retro scene in resurgence, and I applaud you all for that!

    Isn 't this kind of cheating?....you are comparing an original game to an enhanced remake with added features...why not compare the original ps1 version with the original saturn version instead of comparing the original saturn version to the ps1 directors cut?... bit 1 sided

    • @GamevsGame
      @GamevsGame  7 років тому +2

      i see where you're coming from, but swinging the other way, the saturn version compared to the original PS release would be an enhanced version with added features. every release of RE1 changed or updated something, it makes my head spin. in the end i looked at it as giving both platforms their best chance.

    I personally think the latest remastered release of the 2002 remake is the best way to play the game, graphically, and is the most accessible to new comers, since it has modern controls, plus it does not require to own older consoles

    This is so depresing... The saturn had better hardware than the play station. If you just bothered to look at the technicall specifications, you dont even need to be something like a software ingeenier (or at least an student like me) to be able to tell which one had the more powerful hardware, (The satun can only show Quad polygons but that was done on porpouse because of the very uncapable Cpu's of that time.) Also, the saturn was totally capable of displaying transparencies.

    • @DieHardjagged
