    There's so much history to this first game in the franchise. I tend to find the acting charming as it is hilarious. Apparently, the voice actors were just given the lines to deliver in a booth, with no context. It was also Shinji Mikami's first time directing anything, so we ended up with this hilarious acting. Can't help but love the cheese.

      @@MaxHarden I was 8 and remember laughing my ass off with the rest of my family at the horrible acting. I also remember that initial zombie reveal being pants-shittingly terrifying and I found it uncomfortable to watch for several years after, it was just so detailed and alien looking compared to just about any other "spooky" video game stuff at the time. Nowadays it's almost as funny as the voice acting but a tiny part of me still remembers that fear. Didn't stop me from beating the game, though! My whole family loves the series to this day.

    A bit of trivia here about the duel shock director's cut. The altered OST was composed by an artist who claimed to be deaf. 15 years later, it was revealed that not only was that not true, he had a ghost writer who composed the score. He was taking credit for someone else's score. I still prefer the original OST over directors cut.

    A lot of people seem to think that Barry "accidentally" dropping the rope means he intended to trap Jill underground, but if you wait there for a while he promtply returns with a new one just as he promised, so Jill can climb out with it. There are three ways to interpret this: a) he genuinely made a mistake, b) he intended to slow Jill down a bit or c) he might have been trying to protect Jill from Wesker.

    This game will always have a special place in my heart. Game came out when I was 13, almost 14. One of my best friends at the time had a PS1 and had the longbox version. Although by today's standards this game is pretty tame and doesn't have a whole lot of horror going on, for a kid in the mid 90s, when survival horror wasn't really a recognized genre yet, it was pretty scary. Eventually I got the dual shock directors cut on physical disc, purchased a digital copy I don't even know how many times, and then the Nintendo DS version. I actually like all the extra stuff in the DS version.
    Can't wait for you to cover the REmake. I believe it's the best "Classic RE" game of it's kind, and a true exemplar of remakes done right. Not to mention that even 20 years after it's original release, the REmake still manages to scare me at times (as does the RE2make, but I haven't put that many hours into yet).

    I am so happy that you explained what the tank controls and fixed camera angles are and how they are a good thing. So many people here on UA-cam and on Reddit seem to believe that fixed camera gameplay is outdated crap that nobody wants anymore. Either they believe that or they can tolerate it but believe that that type of gameplay should never be returned to ever again.
    Also, a comment on clearing rooms of enemies. Do people really have a problem with that? I thought the whole point of survival horror was to "survive", which includes clearing rooms to make safe zones so that you get out of the scenario with your life. I mean, if I were trapped in a mansion full of BOWs, I know I wouldn't purposely leave some enemies living just to make the experience more threatening.
    Also, the bad voice acting is part of the experience. Resident Evil was made as a tribute to B horror movies. This along with over the top moments of action and horror have always been a huge part of the series. This is why I never understood the criticisms of RE5 and RE6 being too action oriented. Action has always been here from the start. You need it in order to fight the enemies.

    • @ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502
      @ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502 Рік тому +1

      Re1s bad acting was entirely an accident. We know this from behind the scenes interviews that it was not meant to turn out like that. It's not a coincidence that REmake, made by the same director with the explicit purpose of making the game he had wanted re1 to be, absolutely was trying to go for a more serious vibe.
      The series becoming a tribute to B movies only started being intentional from re4 onwards, though your point about it always being action oriented is correct.

    • @hotuorbit
      @hotuorbit Рік тому

      @@ahumanbeingfromtheearth1502 It doesn't matter if that wasn't what it was intended to be originally. That is still how it ended up. Even though the latter classic style games had better voice acting quality and more coherent scripts, it still retained that B-movie atmosphere.

    The tank controls are one of the biggest controversies of the game series and I think once you get used to it its as natural as any other scheme. Therre is something about dodging through a hallway of zombies without taking any damage that is not re created anywhere else. The "horror" is multidimensional as well. The gore and few jump scares can only carry you so far. The anticipation and the anxiety induced by not having ammo or not knowing if there are any more health items etc are just as good as the jump scares and visceral images.And then there is the contrast of when you are in the save rooms compared to the rest of the environments. Really breaks up the tension only to throw you back into it as its the only place to go. Definitely can carry into the later play throughs.

    I'd like to add to the puzzle solving not being frustrating point, because I watched your footage and realised that the solution for he door to the V-Jolt room was to look at the balls on the pool table. But because of the lights on the panel, I never thought to look anywhere else and managed to open the door through 'brute-forcing' it. Which is clever!

    In the old resident evil the characters were very fast and you sprint as fast as a dog unlike the modern where the characters just jog and dogs outrun you...Fast paced despite the tank controls lol

    Yeah dude, agreed. As silly as the Resident Evil voice acting can sometimes be (including consideration of it's age), the lore is still incredibly interesting. I think Resident Evil depicts the whole zombie genre extremely well. It was actually my first introduction to "zombies" as a kid altogether. It made me incredibly scared of zombies because I was so young at the time that I couldn't figure out how to equip the handgun, thus led to me being eaten alive over and over again... that being said, it's what intrigued me about it altogether and ultimately made me driven to conquer my fear of zombies (which I did)! I love Resident Evil. Such a freaking classic!

    The thing with the horror genre is that it always loses its value once you know what to expect. That's why any competent horror movie or game needs to have more to it than just being scary. Action, lore, platforming, etc. For Resident Evil, the ranking system actively encourages replaying it with speed in mind. The devs knew that the game would be less scary the more you play it, but turned that weakness into a selling point by rewarding the player for replaying the game and getting better.

    For Resident Evil 2. I highly recommend playing both scenarios. I had no idea until much later on, but you can play the game backwards and get a whole new experience. (Also "Claire A, Leon B". is considered canon to the plot.)

    Glad to see someone actually give a good review for the original resident evil. Personally, I've only ever played the remastered version of the game, which in my opinion is probably the more terrifying version. While the controls have been improved, they introduced the crimson heads, which make the zombies a bigger threat (basically you kill them, but if you don't destroy the head when you 'kill' them or you don't burn the body with the lighter and canteen of gas, they'll come back faster and stronger)

    is easy to say in 2022 that this game has "bad voice acting" but believe me, when this game came out nobody was listening to it., it was very mysterious and very scary., also the way the lines are acted is to make clear to the player stuff., for example when Barry says "have this lockpick, you are the master of unlocking", or "this weapon is for monsters" sounds stupid when analyzing the game but when you play it for the first time the tension is so big but those sentence break through the tension and makes you remember that with the lockpick you can actually unlock stuff and with the weapon you can kill the big monsters, is kinda a "didactic" way of speaking for any type of player could get it., you also must know that the Japanes Devs knew the american public had a hard time understanding complex gameplay

      @@Goomyx1492 Yes that magazine said that, but gamers didn´t., not many might have even read that magazine., that mood and ambience of re1 was very strong in 1996., the information was not available everywhere on how to play the game or walkthroughs., so the game was very criptic and mysterious too.., the tension it evokes made nobody listen to the dialogue., that came years later when in forums on the internet people were dissecting the game by that time it was ultra beated

    I was 13 years old in 2012 when i finally saw this game in action. My two older brothers had always talked about re1 and re2 growing up but i had never seen them being played until 12 years ago. Admittedly even at that age, 16 years after the games release i was creeped out by the game. The dogs jumping through the window scared tf outta me

    I guess the Hunter opening the door normally was intended to show they were more intelligent, and thus far deadlier, than other enemies in the game. But yeah, its hilarious. Like, I can picture in my mind the Hunter rushing madly trying to find you, only to magically pop up a top hat and a mustache while opening the door, just to revert back to swinging it claws all over the place while roaring bloody murder.

      An easy fix would be to just not have the hunter move so fast. Have it start a little closer to the mansion, moving slowly towards it, and then open the door

    Excellent video! I think that your comments about RE1's level design is a good encapsulation of what makes the game, and the other PS1 RE games, so fun. They are somewhat like Metroidvanias, in that the items that you find keep unlocking more areas to explore. Even though this is a video about the original RE1, I think that the RE2 Remake also captures this feeling, especially in the RPD section.
    There is something important that I would like to make note of about the original RE1, that I am not sure if you were aware of: there are multiple routes, and endings, to the game. Depending on the order that you explore the rooms in the mansion, you can encounter different cut scenes, and these different cut scenes can result in you receiving a different ending. Also, regarding the different endings and routes, I would like to make note that you don't *have* to save Chris or Jill in the laboratory at the end.

    Me and my friends were making fun ofnit at school in the playground. We would just walk around pretending to be Barry pointing and flailing our arms saying 'What iiiisss it!'. We used to laugh about the carnage of them having a dinner party and all the glasses and cutlery getting launches across the table due to the arm flailing.

    I think the plus side of Chris is that he has more health (which might mean having to use fewer health items?), and can be healed by Rebecca once if you got the serum for Richard in time.
    There might be other benefits like faster movement and aiming, but those could be remake-only.

    I think one of the contributing issues with the voice acting is that random American actors were picked in Japan and given absolutely no context as to what they were recording for. The original VA for Wesker has recently been found and has done a couple of interview.
