    Never before have I considered how impressive it is to start out with one 2D series installment and then to immediately make the transition to 3D for the second game, and to make it quite smoothly at that! That would be like as if Super Mario World had been the first Mario game Nintendo ever made and then four years later they came out with Super Mario 64.

    A very nice, nostalgic video. Especially your soundtrack choice, chills were experienced multiple times.
    Rayman 2: The Great Escape for PC was the first ever game to truly captivate me, make me fall in love with games, and greatly influence my taste in a lot of stuff. The butterfly effect of this goes as far as the fact that I'm an indie game developer now, exactly because of how briliant that game was.
    Seeing the game getting stripped down to components by speedrunners, videos like this one and my own, more professional perception is both bittersweet and cathartic, really makes me motivated to pass on the torch and try to create something people would get invested in.

    There's one big difference that wasn't mentioned here: another boss.
    In I believe the PS1 version (if not that then the Dreamcast), the game decides to give an explanation as to WHY the second Guardian doesn't fight you like the others... only to then be faced with a Ninja Pirate. This guy was NOT in the N64, PC, or PS2 versions, nor was the explanation preceding him.

    11:00 Oh my god, thank you! For years I thought I went insane. I played the PS2 version as a child, and after some time lost access to my PS2 and therefore the game. And ever since that day, every remake I purchased, like Rayman 3D, only ever had this portal selection menu. I always wondered, "wait, wasn't this an actual world level you could freely walk through?" and somehow I never found anyone explaining that difference online. Rather, everytime I saw this game again, be it speedruns or gameplays, they always played on a non-PS2 version and each time I thought I lost my mind, remembering a hub world level, that never actually existed.
    Thank you for restoring my faith in my own memories again. And thanks for this great comparison. Some of those version differences I didn't even notice when watching gameplay. Like the blue lum vs bubbles when swimming.

  • @geschnitztekiste4111
    @geschnitztekiste4111 5 років тому +5

    Rayman 3D had a pretty weird glitch where a trampoline didn't have a bounce effect on it, so it was impossible to get to a Lum cage

    • @BigAlvideos101
      @BigAlvideos101 5 років тому +3

      Actually, in that section, you can use one of the enemies in mid-flight to "bounce" yourself up to that same Lum cage, and once you get to it, it saves and everything! The only thing to keep in mind is that if you try to exit the level via the hole in the ground that warps you out, the game will freeze/soft lock. However, since the game saves once you collect the Lum there, you can pretty much just shut off the 3DS and turn it back on and you'll still have that Lum! I saw it done in a UA-cam video!

      @@TheGeras666
      Yes, I know, but the physical version (and I think the GOG version) has support for DirectX, though it's very picky and won't work on every PC, while the 3DFX API is more compatible and easy to use for these old games thanks to nGlide and Digi Voodoo.
      Although, going back to your original question for a moment, I'm also curious why the guy didn't show any footage from the PC version, as both the physical and GOG versions are dirt cheap (though if you want to play this on a 64-bit OS I recommend the GOG version), and both nGlide, and Digi Voodoo are also easy to get and setup.

      @ultrairrelevantnobody1862 5 років тому +6

    • @wschippr1
      @wschippr1 5 років тому

      British Media Bully
      That’s just semantics and kind of irrelevant. The fact remains that the experience from the N64 version is a strict downgrade from the DC version. The only reason to get the N64 version over the DC one is if you don’t have a DC (or if it is significantly more expensive). We don’t give any other form of media a pass because it’s older, you’re not going to say, “I have to rank this experience 4% more enjoyable because it’s five months older.”

    I dunno who that Nitro Rad is cos I'm old but pretty neat that he did a cameo thing. Rayman 2 is a such a neat game. Didn't realise how different each port was. Some of the changes seem almost arbitrary but I imagine it was more to do with scope. Like, the Dreamcast's map was probably intended for the original releases but never finished in time. Also noticed the jail cell at the start on PS1 has a metal door rather than energy beams. I would say that was a technical thing but the PS1 was pretty great at transparencies. Maybe there's a Rayman multiverse where each one is a little different.
    Well done on getting this video finished. I know it was a lot of work just finishing each of the games to get the footage. Glad to see you back!

Yep, lots of little tweaks like the cage door, and at the end you can see only the N64 and Dreamcast have little bits of drool dripping off the teeth, the PS1 and PS2 are missing that effect. Noticed that as I was editing. I feel like I need to add pop-up notes on some of those as additional call outs of changes like that.

    This was a fun video, been on the Rayman 2 hype train again recently since I picked up the 3DS Version. Grew up with the PS1 Version and I'll always have Nostalgic Bias towards that Version 😂
    Re-Downloaded Rayman 2 PS1 onto my Vita to play that too and from Work earlier in the week (finished it now) and continued to completion Rayman Revolution on PS3 (PS2 Classic from the American PSN) and now working on Rayman 3D whilst waiting for Rayman DS to arrive (basically picked up DS since I found out DS is the N64 Version and 3D is the Dreamcast Version making it so I can play all 4 major Versions back to back personally 😁)

    That and the fact that it plays so well even on that 33mhz CPU.

    For anyone wondering, the PC version is based on the N64 version. And there was also once a IOS version which was based on the Dreamcast version.

    • @granvillimus
      @granvillimus 5 років тому

      The PC version is effectively the N64 version's content but importing some of the visuals of the DC version (such as the higher res textures and a few of the higher polygon character models).

    We need a proper HD remaster of Rayman 2. I mean, we got Crash back. Spyro back. Sir Fortesque is making a comeback too soon enough. So, why not give a green light for Rayman as well?

    Great video! For my money, the N64/PC version is definitive. It's the original game, and sure, it lacks some of the extras added to later ports, but none of that extra content is necessary, and all of the subsequent ports do something to mar the experience in a way that the new content doens't make up for.
    -The PS1 cuts content and lacks the Ramanese (I like to call it Ramanian).
    -The PS2 version adds a nice hub world, but the frame rate suffers at points. The Ramanian is restored, which adds a lot of atmosphere back into the game, but as you stated, you have to choose to set the spoken language to Ramanese every time you turn on the game. What's more, this version of the game pads thing out unnecessarily by requiring you to unlock moves given to the player in a way that makes more sense in other releases and giving the player the option to unlock skills that are shoehorned into this release, either overpowering the player or adding new obstacles requiring these powers into levels that were not built with them in mind and ultimately don't add anything. Worst of all, for me, is when this version takes something away as a means of allowing you to "unlock" it later; especially when the story suffers as a result. I mean, come on. The lum Globox gives Rayman the power to...punch stuff...with his fists? Really? Maybe I'm petty, but for me, this undermines the very opening of the game, and therefore, the rest of the game with it. Finally, and you didn't mention this, but the PS2 version only plays the level music the first time you go through a level, so have fun backtracking and replaying to get all those collectibles this version requires. Yeah, the hub world is nice, but you're giving up a whole lot in exchange.
    -The Dreamcast version is the one that could best be aruged to rival the original N64/PC version, and I'll admit this is where I'm going with personal preference. The increased frame rate is nice, of course, but the Island of Doors just doesn't do it for me. Sure, the Hall of Doors of the original was sparse, but that was its charm. In that emptiness is a whole lot of character and atmosphere. Just listening to that music while guiding Rayman down that line is magical. Every time he stops at a portal, if you wait before selecting it, an animation will play from something in the level, and it's all just so fitting. It's hard to explain unless you've seen it. For those who haven't, Look up a playthrough of the game and pay attention to the level selection screen. For being so minimalist, it's full of the character inherent to the game. I just don't feel the Island of Doors makes that same connection. Again, your mileage may vary here, of course.

    Dude, I just found out about this channel and I gotta say I loved the video and how you make videos!
    But if I may, I think the song title cards are a bit too big, sometimes overlapping gameplay (like at 4:12). I think it'd be a bit better if you put it a bit smaller, and a bit more to the corner of the video, as an additional side-info rather than something with so much visual focus. Either ways, amazing video!! Totally earned a sub!

    Fun sidenote: Rayman 2 on GBC is mostly the same game as the first Rayman GBC game. The boxart is the same but with a different background color, the music from the first game is reused, the graphics are mostly reused (incl. the Comic Sans), and functions practically the same. The differences is that Rayman had some new sprites when climbing, has a battery save, the cutscene art took a nosedive in quality, and overall it's made by a different studio.
    If I were to add one more game, that would be the GBA port of Rayman 3. Yeah, but hear me out: It's mostly a 2D demake of Rayman 2, but with hoodlums stuffed in there way late in development. It's a weird fusion of Rayman 2 & 3, and the only Rayman game where you actually see Rayman shooting out his fists, instead of leaving a "3rd fist" that other games had.

    Purple isnt actually the colour of death in japan. its the colour of royalty

    • @reidysmeidy5772

      Purple is the color of royalty in the west too. Its because back in olden times Purple fabric was expensive to make. And often we just associated royalty with evil. Donning the purple being the phrase.

    • @AB-dd4jz
      @AB-dd4jz 3 роки тому

      The dev team misunderstood and though making rayman purple would harm their sales in Japan, indeed it's not the color of death but that's what they understood it was (from my memory in Japan white is considered the color corresponding to death) anyway that was just an anecdote from an interview with the dev team.

    I think PS1 version is the only one with an actual real language voice acting at least for spanish.
    Thats something that defends it in my opinion.
    I played Rayman 2 as follows Dreamcast first, next PS2 and lastly PS1.
