    Im in an IT apprenticeship, end of 2. year in it and can do it, but still checked the video out in it's entirety to go safe. I'm a bit paranoid about my system as it has a lot of software that needs days to download and more to install correctly (I'm also a music producer) and setting up. Rather take the 10 minutes and feel safer than rush it and feel sorry.
    Thank you very much! I appreciate the work, have a nice day and I hope you and the dog are healthy.

    I've watched a number of these videos and yours was the clearest and actually used the model of motherboard that I have. I'm happy to report no problems with the BIOS flash update. I then mocked up the motherboard outside the case with memory, my new APU, monitor, and power connections. Just wanted to see if it would POST. It did and immediately recognized my fancy new Ryzen 7 5700G APU, which I obtained from eBay. This is what I wanted to see before proceeding with my build. I updated to version 2006 of the BIOS, the latest non-beta version. Yeah, I know it's a suboptimal build, but in this day of crazy GPU prices and sketchy availability, this is my way of fighting back. BTW, loved the checklist you put on screen early in the video. As a pilot, I use checklists all the time and it's a very comfortable way of dealing with all the details.

    • @GlennBerrySQL
      @GlennBerrySQL  3 роки тому

      There is nothing wrong with using a Ryzen 7 5700G APU for a build now. It has esentially the same performance as a Ryzen 7 5800X. Once GPU prices and availability improve, you can always add a decent discrete GPU.
      I'm glad the video was useful!

    To those who are having problems with the light staying on solid after a few seconds of flashing... I just spend a frustrating hour having this problem on my ASUS B450M-PLUS II, before realizing that the USB port that is directly next to the flashback button and LED is NOT the correct USB port, the correct port is on the other end of the back panel, next to the audio jacks, like NOWHERE NEAR the actual button/LED. Yes it does have the box and 'BIOS' wording around it, but I did not look closely enough and just assumed that the port immediately next to the button/LED was the BIOS USB port. Hopefully my error will save someone else some time! Look for the correct USB port! I just upgraded with a 4GB thumb drive which I quick formatted in W10 to 'FAT' (not FAT 32) and it has worked, now I can use my new 5000 series Ryzen with the latest BIOS.

    For everyone who's a bit confused why there is no ".CAP" at the end of the file name after running the renamer, DON'T TRY TO ADD ".CAP" OR CHANGE IT ALL, because your motherboard wouldn't recognize it once you change the name or add anything to it. I ran into this problem and got a static led green light from the back of the motherboard.

Or do I have to power the mobo on prior for it to realize?

    • @GlennBerrySQL

      This method doesn't do any version checking. It just overwrites the BIOS on the motherboard with what is on the USB flash drive. The version on the motherboard from the factory probably won't work with a 5600X.

    Just wanted to pass some information not covered in this video. The author expresses the importance of seeing the green LED light to know if it's working, implying that the light will just be off if something isn't right. My green LED light was on and I thought it was installing and happy. 15 minutes later and it's still on. I checked the manual for this motherboard and it says, "If the light flashes for five seconds and turns into a solid green light, this means that the BIOS Flashback is no operating properly". So if you have a green LED light but it's a solid color and not flashing, then something isn't right.
    Edit: To expound I made different mistakes and each one gave me this solid LED light:
    1) My USB was formatted as FAT and not FAT32
    2) The first bios flash file I tried to install was the non-wifi version of this board, so the file was named RSB550FG.CAP opposed to RSB550FGW.CAP. It's important to get the exact right version you need as there's very closely named versions of this board (ex. there's also a Wi-Fi II version which creats the file RSB550FGW2.CAP)

    • @GlennBerrySQL
      @GlennBerrySQL  2 роки тому

      With this method, you can flash it again if something goes wrong (like losing power during the process). If you live somewhere where you lose power on a regular basis, you might want to consider getting a small UPS if possible, which will also protect your computer from surges, brownouts, and complete outages. Did this for an ASUS MAXIMUS Z690 HERO, although with the i9-12900K, RAM, M.2 SSD and a RTX 3070 ti installed. Booted the first time after assembly, saw it working and instead of doing a BIOS update from BIOS (didn't know that this is possible at that time) I switched the rig off and did a BIOS flashback. The flashback button flashed for somewhere between 3 to 5 minutes and then stopped. The PC never came up again, meaning that when switching on the PSU, the Mobo light show is performing as usual, the reset CMOS button is lighted, so there's at least some power. Pressing the power button on the PC doesn't change anything - not even the case and AIO fans start to rotate (or light up, some of them are RGB) I only hear a soft click from (I believe) the PSU. The power button's LED also goes on. Switching the rig off using the power button again causes the click-sound, and power button LED goes off. Tried everything. Clear CMOS, removing power, removing CMOS battery for a night, checking several USB sticks for MBR/FAT (finally I found an old 4GB stick) and tried to re-flash like 5 times. Same result. Do you have any idea what I could check?

    I have this question in mind that, after a successful bios flashback without its components on the motherboard.
    Do I just unplug the cables (8pin and 24pin) from the motherboard and install the components such as cpu, gpu, ram, m.2 nvme?
    will it damage my device or its fine?
    I'm just worrying if there will be remaining electricity on the motherboard even after removing the cables that might damage the components.

    Great video. Excellent tutorial. Thank you for the clear steps and details. You said a 5000 series "would not work" with the titular motherboard. What exactly do you mean? I am still going to preform this BIOS update to be safe, but my computer booted and installed windows just fine out of the box with a Ryzen 7 5800X. Well, you did get somewhat lucky. This is because your particular motherboard must have been manufactured later, after ASUS updated the BIOS version for new motherboards leaving the factory. There might be a sticker or logo on the motherboard box that says something like "Ryzen 5000 Series Ready".
      You have to have BIOS version 1004 or later for a Ryzen 7 5800X to be supported.

Rinse and repeat? Hope that makes sense, were pulling our hair out currently! Any ideas?

    • @GlennBerrySQL
      @GlennBerrySQL  2 роки тому

      Well, the BIOS flash LED needs to blink/flash pretty regularly for 5-6 minutes and then stop flashing. What you describe sounds like a problem reading the BIOS flash file from the USB drive. There are a number of small things you might have done wrong. For example:
      Maybe you downloaded the BIOS update file for a different model motherboard
      Maybe you did not rename the BIOS update file and copy it to the root of the USB drive
      Maybe the USB drive is not formatted with FAT32

    1st- remove the flash drive from the motherboard
    2nd - check the USB if it formatted correctly,
    3rd - check the bios file if is renamed correctly and located on the root folder.
    4th - After everything is checked and ready, plug in the flash drive again from the motherboard
    5th - click the button for 2-3 seconds and wait (5-6 mins) until it stops.
    My concern is -after knowing that the bios flashback has failed (the light is on but not blinking)... is it okay to just remove the flash drive from the motherboard or will it damage it?

    • @GlennBerrySQL
      @GlennBerrySQL  3 роки тому +1

      If the BIOS flash LED is not blinking, then nothing is happening. You can unplug the power supply from the wall, and then remove the USB drive from the USB port.
      Then, you should rewatch the video to make sure you did everything correctly. You would want to make sure the USB drive is formatted with FAT32, the flash file was properly renamed, the flash file was in the root of the USB drive etc.
      These components are more rugged (and safer) than you seem to think. If this were a dangerous, risky procedure, the motherboard vendors would not have exposed it to end users. They would have done something like requiring you to send it in for servicing.

      Probably not. The BIOS flash LED need to flash for 5-6 minutes, not just a few seconds.

    Maybe you can help me. After a ton of research, I went with a new Asus ROG Strix B550-F Gaming WIFI, a Ryzen 7 5800x3d, a Gigabyte Geforce3080 12GB CPU, 4x8 DDR4 Corsair Vengence RGB Pro Ram, and a Corsair RM850x Power Supply. I have several issues. I assembled the entire system, downloaded the Bios update, and was ready to rock. I hit the power button and nothing. I have the LED on the board but nothing powers. After trying the flash and still nothing I started to Troubleshoot. I managed to get the system to start but had to unplug the GPU to get the system to power on. I have tried 2 different USB sticks to flash the bios as directed Fat32, renamed Etc. My green light stays on, I have tried 4 or 5 times. I even removed the battery to reset the CMOS and still solid green. Problem is I have no idea if any one of these parts came DOA. Everything is New from Amazon, All boxes were sealed. I suspect the Power Supply but have no idea at this point. I am about $2800 in parts and kinda stuck. I used to own a Computer Store, I never once was stumped like this in 5 years in the store and another 15 as a tech.

      I'm sorry you are having all of this trouble. With a Ryzen 7 5800X3D, you will definitely need to update the BIOS (using BIOS Flashback) before the system will POST.
      rog.asus.com/us/motherboards/rog-strix/rog-strix-b550-f-gaming-wi-fi-model/helpdesk_bios/
      Did you try to do that, using the method shown in the video?
      If you did, what, if anything happened?
      You should have seen the BIOS flash LED blinking for 5-6 minutes, and then stop.
      The Ryzen 7 5800X3D does not have integrated graphics, so you won't get any video signal without a discrete GPU installed. That GPU has to have the extra PCIe power connectors connected from the power supply, or it won't work.
      What CPU cooler are you using? Is the CPU cooler plugged to the 4-pin PWM connector on the motherboard?
      Have you tried just two sticks of memory rather than all four?

      @@GlennBerrySQL I did the BIOs as instructed. The light did stop blinking but it stayed green for 20 mins. I assumed it would go out. I am taking the GPU from this computer to be 100% sure and maybe I can work around the problem or at best be sure the MB, RAM, and Power supply are not the problem. I will also try the 2 sticks as a Troubleshoot. Back in a few minutes and let you know how it went.

    Went through all the steps, and I hit a snag on the USB drive being too big--it was a 32gb and the little green light blinked for a few seconds and cut out. So I found an older USB that's about 1gb, formatted it to FAT32, put the CAP file directly onto the device, and plugged it in. The green light flashes for a moment, and then it just stays solid. I'm just curious how long this process should take because the little green light has been completely solid for about 15-20 mins now. I feel like something may have gone wrong.
    FYI, I have a ROG Strix B550-F Gaming Wifi Mobo that suddenly wouldn't POST. Checked all cables, components, hardware, etc., and realized that if I plugged them into an older mobo, it worked fine. Tried taking out the battery on the mobo and placing a screwdriver on the CLRTC, but none of that worked. So now I'm hoping this process works. If it doesn't, I will send off the mobo to ASUS, but I really don't have time to wait for them to send me another one, so I guess I'll have to grab another mobo. Is there one that's really reliable? Or is this ROG Strix one reliable and I just got a lemon? I've only had it for a few months. Thanks.

      Are you 100% sure you downloaded the BIOS for your exact motherboard model? ASUS has several models with similar names.
      Here are some general troubleshooting steps:
      1. Did you watch the entire video, and follow the directions exactly?
      2. Is the USB drive formatted with FAT32 rather than NTFS or exFAT?
      3. Do you have file extensions enabled in Windows Explorer?
      4. Did you download the latest BIOS file for your motherboard?
      5. Did you rename the BIOS file as RB550FGW.CAP?
      6. Is the BIOS file in the root of the USB drive?
      7. Is the USB drive in the correct port (the one labeled BIOS)?
      8. Are both power supply cables plugged into the motherboard?
      9. Did you plug in the USB drive before you turned the power supply on?
      10. Are you using a USB 2.0 flash drive instead of a USB 3.0 flash drive (USB 2.0 seems to work better)?
      11. Did the BIOS flash LED on the motherboard flash for 5-6 minutes, and then stop flashing?

    • @damienoris1871

      @@GlennBerrySQL Yes to all except for #11--the BIOS light initially flashes for a second or two along with the light on the USB drive, but then the BIOS light just stays a solid green without blinking, and stays that way until I flip the I/O switch on the PSU. For #4, I couldn't remember if I had the Gaming Wifi I or II version, so I tried both files, and neither one of them worked--the end result was the same.
      I will add the context that when the mobo decided to not POST anymore, I was installing a Kraken X73 liquid cooler, but removed that and gone down to the minimal requirements to boot up, and it still doesn't work. And my old mobo, a ROG Strix B450, boots up just fine with or without the liquid cooler. I'm just not sure how I fried the BIOS after a few months, or by installing something on it.

      @@damienoris1871 It sounds like you might have some other issue with the motherboard. It should still be covered under warranty.

    I'm having trouble. To my knowledge I followed every step. I used a thumb drive that had been used for other previous troubleshooting on my computer, so I formatted, using FAT (I didn't notice a FAT32 option), copied the BIOS file straight on to the drive, renamed it using the other program, and put it in the BIOS slot, then held the flash back button. The light flashes a few times then stays solid green.
    Edit: The light flashes three times exactly, if that is important at all.
