- Dec. 4 (Bloomberg) -- For its 85th anniversary, Bloomberg Businessweek chronicles the most disruptive ideas of the past 85 years. In 1984, the world was introduced to the Apple Macintosh personal computer with an advertisement that ran during Super Bowl XVIII. The spot helped define Apple as a brand and changed the Super Bowl into a must-see media event. (Video by Brandon Lisy. Music by Andy Clausen) (Source: Bloomberg)
1984: Our idea was that Big brother represented the control of technology by the few.
2020: You have become the very thing you swore to destroy.
Ye it's insane! Now epic is doing the same to Apple😂
Lolololololl
How did she have an ipod in 1984 is my question
@@urboi9one550 I was wondering that as well.
I dont know who they tring to play with that but that would mean we had had technology before and our life has been a false reality or Mandela effected
Sad to see that, three decades later, Apple has become that big IBM machine they were supposedly fighting against.
the irony of things
Ig it's time for another Apple
Nah, Apple innovates way more things you’ll use at home still today than IBM ever did yesterday.
@@TheVineOfChristLives Sorry for living under a rock but IBM PC changed the world in it's own way. Most of the industries work on Windows based systems. All the things around you, Wooden roof truss systems of the house we live in, structural civil systems of modern buildings, mechanical engineering designs of cars we drive in are all designed and run in windows based Systems which are basically IBM PCs. Yes design industry does use a bit of Mac. But most of industrial systems are run on Dos and windows machines which are technically IBM PCs. Your Apple products are made with industries relying on Windows and Dos based workstation machines.
They always were.

Unforgettable imagery. You can feel the genius of Ridley Scott in every frame.
Apple advertised what they didn't want to become but they did
Was it that Bill Gates won a tug of war between himself and Steve Jobs? In that case, Gates won? Did Steve Jobs really want the little guy to have such choices? Adopted, Steve Jobs' real dad was a first generation American, from the Middle East?
Complex Bills yeah google has 70% but the app store makes more money.
@@catboy3471 Still. despite them being the minority, they absolutely control their ecosystem tightly and DO NOT allow any kind of competition. They are extremely toxic in that regard. Google still open sources a lot of their products and works together with multiple companies to do amazing things. Google isn't perfect but they aren't as bad as Apple. You can still install any app or store you want on Android. All you need to do is install an APK file.
The reason Android has more market share is because Google doesn't rely on their own products alone. They share their OS so we won't have 1000 variants of them like the old days of phones. Apple, in the other hand, doesn't even share their OSX and ALWAYS expects you to buy their product in the level that they even try to avoid you installing their OS on a regular PC. If that's not anti competitive/big brotherish, I don't know what is.
Luffy you realise that by open source their OS, people will start pirate the app? Toxic BS
Oh and obviously open sourcing an operating system (cough Linux), doesn't mean programs are any easier to pirate. Windows isn't open source, but piracy is the most prevalent there.
Lol Apple is now the big brother of technology these days, such ironic twist of fate
I think there is a point where every major brand somehow gets Satan behind them. This was Apple's. I say that as a non - Christian simply noting the mythology .
***** nigga why did u have to bring religion in to this? god and satan isnt real they are man-made stuff to keep people from doing stupid things
I brought it as a mythology, which i clearly stated and in fact couldn't have been more blatant about. And don't call me nigga. Call me faggot.
In fact, your response is enough to make people religious.
***** so satan is mythology?
I find it ironic that Apple under Steve Jobs has become the company that was portrayed in that commercial where they literally want everyone to have the exact same experience using their products and that their products only work with their products making it really hard to customise ones experience using these products. Also everyone is in white and grey and Apple was in color and now that's the reverse. On an ironic scale of one to ten, this is an eleven.
Oh I noticed it long ago.
It's the same case in my home country where Alibaba said they wanted to help small and medium enterprises realize their dreams while at the end of the day they themselves became a too big to fail monster.
thats a bit of a stretch
@@holliswillett6409 Copy me and Epub book over Bluetooth and we'll talk.
@@chupasaurus But muh airdrop!!1!
I like that they have a hooters girl in their advertisement...
That Hooter girl was Anya Major...she appeared in the music video by EltonJohn - Nikkita
2:04 "The control of technology by the few." In the context of George Orwell's thoughts, this becomes ironic in 2017 ;) Welcome to jail.
Hi from the future I hope you're still alive and kicking cuz you are exactly spot on we are living in a George orwellian world!
At 1:15 it looks like she's wearing an iPod.
That's the 2004 remake in which they were introducing the iPod.
Fuck! It is the iPod.
Yeah but it’s not in the original commercial from 1984
That is the OG iPod
None of you understand what Apple’s message was in the ad. Apple is committed to making tech accessible to the masses, and the man on the screen represents how only a few could really understand and use tech if apple didn’t have easy to use products. It’s not about taking down big technology, it’s about user accesibility. Consumers aren’t interested in a company if they’re just a competitor, they’re interested because apple says they are better
Literally everybody understands that why are you saying no one does?
speaking in such broad generalities is the first sign of an idiot and you gave it in your first four words. go away.
Why do you assume none understand the message here? By the way, Apple has become what they claimed to be freeing people from in 1984. Apple was a different company back then.
That hammer is made of irony.
Whatever! Still one of the best commercials and still remembered after all these years! Kudos to Jobs and Ridley Scott.
Michael Hayko the most watched piece by him.
It's irony that today IBM, the presumes "Big brother" is no longer in the PC biz, and the major device that tech "disciples" are controlled by belongs to Apple.
History repeats itself.
1984: Apple fighting IBM
2020: Fortnite Fighting Apple.
Is this karma to apple?
That’s just sad
Dude fortnite is just doing it for money, they saw the tos and planned to break them for pr
@@twip_ they literally lowered prices and apple didn't like it
WoKeCarson That’s not the full story. Apple takes 30 percent of each purchase, which is not fair, but is in the terms of service. Epic Games found a way around that, where you pay Epic directly. However, that is breaking the Terms of Service, which is why Apple (and I believe Google) removed Fortnite from their app stores. I agree with Epic Games on a moral level, but Apple is most likely going to win the lawsuit. Because Epic Games broke the TOS, that gives Apple a huge advantage in court.
How do you discuss this ad without even mentioning the guy that actually made it?
Keyser Soze yeah. Ridley scott.
Maybe Scott was not the guy behind the idea. Directors oftten work on delivered screenplay.
Justin Fencsak Ridley produced it but Jobs came up with the idea. There is a whole chapter in the autobiography
@@tomaszborkowski81 Yeah. As Spielberg has done on every single movie of his career.
Ayna Major is that woman that liberated the Computer generation of the 80's
It's 2020 and we're still watching this. :)
unfortunately the 1984 scenario has pretty much been realized with everyone glued to their smart technology
Smart technology isn't the problem at all. The problem is hydraulic despotism. Whether it's water, minerals, oil, data, or what have you, kings and nobles always find a way to seize control of something everyone needs and then use it to control everyone else.
~
The 2016 election represents the death throes of two obsolete phenomena tomorrow's children are sick of: Bigotry, and hydraulic despotism (née imperialism). The critical question, given the specters of WW3 and runaway climate change, is whether they'll take humanity down with them.
People continue to talk about this ad precisely because it wasn't about a product. The product was a way to tell a story, not the subject of the story itself.
"Meet the new boss, just the same as the old boss."
UA-cam really got comfortable with these double ads 😤
Thirty years later and he still wouldn't admit IBM was the target.
This guy looks like Cleetus Macfarland in 80's.
In 1984 I said to myself - That is my daughter (daughters ) throwing that hammer. Free thinking, competitive and just.
+ted norton
I was thinking of the recognition of females in our culture. Not the Apple Co.
+Brad Wiiams I am sorry sir. I replied to the wrong thread. :)
Apple was none of the above. They were simply throwing a hissy fit because the IBM PC running Microsoft software was transforming the business enviroment, while the Apple III and Lisa computers were duds.
still, the mac did have a proper, modern OS though and worked like a real computer. so it wasnt that bad for apple
Fascinating! This is why I love Bloomberg!
The allusion to IBM might be accidental, but it's certainly appropriate to portray IBM's milieu as a concentration camp because they did the data processing for the Holocaust. The Holocaust predates computers of course, but at that time IBM was a major proponent of data processing using punch card technology, and a lot of useful things, like census taking, could be done with that. In announcing a new personal computer in 1984, Apple was stepping into the ring, so bringing up IBM's evil tyrannical past is a good strategy.
Apple is the definition of You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain
2022- still a legend this ad

It's funny how the role has reversed & it's now Apple that has become that huge soulless corporation....🍎🤔🤔🤔🤔

Big Tech has now become the man in the screen.
Not one mention of Scott Ridley who made the film !?
i was thinking that.
Hello @BlooombergQuicktake what chair is he sitting on at 0:20 seconds in the video. My teacher just offered me an A if I could find it for him.
Why 2024 *will* be exactly like 1984.
Who is the guy in this video?
and the Raiders kicked butt that day too!
LOVE LOVE LOVE!! Now, please create a one-time super-bowl ad for TESLA!!!
Nobody talking about anya major, that hot English woman
I am reading the 2011 version of the book. Steve Jobs. written by Walter Isaacson. In 1984 we were in the middle of an oppressive regime change panic in SAfrica. The ad stands out to me as symbolic of a freedom we longed for. Ten years afterwards we received it bloodlessly. A few seconds of history making that linger on in the mind of the dreamers. May our children be able to recognize moments of great human achievement.
And now they will scan your photos for “CSAM” and report it to the authorities with the humanitarian excuse that it’s for child safety. Since when do they care about anyone’s Safety?
so wait a minute!! the girl running has an ipod? that was 1984??? did anyone see that?
Its an edit, she doesn't have it in the original ad

it's not in the original ad
Special Reconnaissance Regiment well, europeans stole gunpowder from the chinese, sit down
Why am I not surprised that Jobs and Wozniak had to fight tooth and nail against their own board members to air such a legendary commercial.A commercial one that would capture their company's philosophy and vision for the next 50 years? What were these board directors and executives thinking?
They were thinking nobody would understand it.
This commercial was copied directly from the opening scene of the movie 1984. Thus the reference to "1984". Considering the timing,, I admit it was clever to use this scene and twist it a little to introduce the Mac but its not genius.
Wow, This guy seriously looks like coach pop

1:16: The from '84 is wearing an iPod!
In 2004, to celebrate the Macintosh's 20th anniversary, Apple released a modified version of the commercial with the heroine now wearing an iPod.
Yeah it’s not from the original
when iPod's design was pre-conceived since 1984.
No. It was added for the 20th anniversary of the commercial in 2004.

How about Ridley Scott talks about his work?
Who came here from the hλlf life 2 ad "free yourself"
Wait... how did the woman have an iPod??
Irony 101.
Actually he's telling bullshit when he says they found it irresponsible to not show the product and that was the reason to not run it again. The Orwell Estate viewed the Apple commercial as a copyright infringement, and sent a cease-and-desist letter to Apple and its advertising agency. That's why the commercial was never televised again.

I watched an interesting doco about the skinhead extras used in the advert. The skinheads had interesting ideas about the idea of what freedom is
