Superior performance, in its own special way. Absolute clarity, no heavy pedal, no pyrotechnics: you will hear every notes, and many which you have never heard before in their proper rhythmical relations. Some might consider Ciccolini's playing to be tame by comparison with, e.g., Lang Lang, Pollini, Argerich, or even the brilliantly intelligently Brendel, but the restraint is all in the service of proportion, musical section and theme by section and theme. You will also hear harmonics missing in other performances. Add to this a precision and delicacy of touch that respects each note, that eschews blurring of tones, and you have a masterful---although atypical---interpretation of these great great pieces.

I agree completely with your description of and praise for Ciccolini's performance. This is a special personal favorite among older recordings of the complete Years of Pilgrimage. But why do you compare Ciccolini's interpretation to the work of pianists none of whom (has) ever recorded the entire three-book cycle? Surely it would be more useful to refer to those recent artists who have, such as Bertrand Chamayou, Muza Rubackyte or Daniel Grimwood (no Venezia e Napoli, but played on an 1851 Erard - talk about clarity!), all three of whom give superb renditions, or alternatively to other Liszt pioneers, such as Edith Farnadi. Thank you.

The great neapolitan school of pianism ( Ciccolini was born in Naples. Here lived and studied ). I suggest you to hear also Listz played by Sergio Fiorentino

This isn't the 1961 recording, either. Probably the mono effort from 1954.

God forgive me, but I;ve listened to more inspired performances of these works. Especially the 3d Book of Pilgrimages. I like more mystery, more faith, more humbleness. its not a work of virtuosity. Liszt was in a different stage in his life by then....

I forgive you. Pray, tell us which are these more inspired performances of the 3rd Book?
