When did he do this? Was it in a text message or in a phone call? Bach was a devoted Christian and he would never say "love is folly." Very much against Christian doctrine to only focus on "beauty." Love is the most beautiful thing there is. God is love and so love is everywhere, as is God.

The French Suites are six and was composed by Bach for harpsichord and clavichord, between 1722 and 1725. The French title serves to differentiate them from the Italian style. They are masterpieces of harmony, delicacy and grace that only an amazing composer like Bach would have written. The pianist is fabulous, not only for the sensibility he interprets the pieces but also for the fantastic technique he demonstrates in their execution and magnificent cadence he uses. Thanks for this wonderful performance and recording.
This is sublime. Unlike so many performers who seem to want to prove to the listener how brilliant they are, Yuan Sheng seems to want to show the listener how brilliant Bach is; in doing the latter, he also proves without doubt the former. It is magical. Every note is delicate, meaningful; perfect. Thank you for sharing this 🙂
how is showing the brilliance of Bach by muddying all of Bach's melodic lines with a tasteless use of sustain..? No doubt to mask the pianist's lack of true articulation and clarity. This is terrible
This is my first contact with Yuan Sheng. He is a young Chinese pianist, with studies in China, Manhattan, and advanced training under the renowned Bach interpreter Rosalyn Tureck . From Tureck he has perfected a crystalline, intellectual, sober approach to Bach. His style has some echoes of Glenn Gould in the schematic, architectonic, unsentimental playing. He reminds me of Alfred Brendel in the intellectual weight of his playing, being his sound very different. His sense of tempo seems to me supernatural. I believe Yuan Sheng will become in the very near future one of the most respected names in the world in interpreting Bach. He has already recorded the 24 preludes of Chopin and given concerts in several countries. Thanks Brilliant Classics for uploading this music and introducing us to this remarkable musician

Being English my second language (when I was a kid it was the third), my usage of the language may be slippery. I think, for instance, that Schubert D 960 is sad, even dramatic, perhaps tragic, but not sentimental. Unsentimental does not denote a lack of feeling, it means the abstinence from "sentimentality".

This is an eye-opener. Rosalyn Tureck will always remain the goddess among Bach interpreters. Yet, most of her recordings were made in the mono era. Here, we can hear surely one of her best pupils playing Bach with a purity and stylistic accuracy that do his teacher proud. Prof Sheng does not allow his personality or emotions to come between the music and the listener. No wonder some commentators compared him to Brendel, who manages to do the same for Beethoven. It is amazing that at no point does one feel that there is display of virtuosity. Equally, there is no affectation or preciosity (sorry about using these big words that are often used in music reviews). This is art that conceals art. It is ironic that we hear so little from this piano professor based in Beijing, who has so much to teach the world, while most people think that Lang is the best Chinese pianist.

I was fortunate to hear Yuan Sheng play Chopin beautifully in Firenze in April. Listening to this recording he's now become one of my favorite interpreters of Bach!
The French Suites are six suites composed by Johann Sebastian Bach between 1722 and 1725. A suite is a group of dances. 300 years later... And we are still admiring the genius of Bach....

For many years I have been thinking that Glenn Gould's interpretation of the French Suites was the nec plus ultra. And now this. I am completely addicted to Yuan Shen's approach to J.S. Bach. It's got all the warmth, transparency and natural understanding of tempi, which I had missed without knowing that all this can be found in this music If only Mr. Sheng plays it.
Fluid, like a river flowing seamlessly, unhindered by elements beyond control. Satisfying to the greatest heavenly heights and even though life may be foreboding, this music so graciously, bravely and brilliantly written by Bach, gives a rational of hope...
Mr Yuan Sheng is a piano professor at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. He is undoubtedly the best known and maybe the only Bach pianist of China. Unfortunately, with UA-cam blocked for access by the the government in that country, Mr Sheng himself cannot see any of these heart-warming comments on his Bach music!

Yuan Sheng is a truly amazing pianist; he deserves far more recognition by the general public in my humble opinion. He is absolutely amazing; he is able to make music of such wonderfully composed pieces. I have had the pleasure of attending a few of his masterclasses; he is a phenomenal teacher as well!
The sarabande in the first suite is totally poignant (but not at all gushing with sentimentality). An extraordinary achievement in balancing lyricism with control. The tempo is spot on. I can't stop listening to this.
I absolutely love the Sarabande of Bach's French Suite no.6. Especially the opening!!! Absolutely gorgeous to listen to. Shout out to the pianist YUAN SHENG!!!!!!!!!
I will add to the chorus of praise: I really appreciate this beautiful performance, especially the way the performer captures the balance of feelings and clarity that the music of Bach conveys, and which allows what Bach considered the Divine to shine through.

Glenn Gould has finally met his match. Yuan Sheng has all but (gracefully) removed the claim as the 'premier interpreter of Bach', from Gould's lore. Never has listening to Bach been so enjoyable, peaceful, impressive.
FWIW: I'm glad I came across Prof. Sheng's recordings and agree they are fine. I love Gould's as well. I don't think myself capable of ranking them. I think that any discussion of who is better, greater, etc. can never be settled objectively with JSB's opinion.

I find you're rendition of the J.S. Bach French suites absolutely meticulous with smooth counterpoint lines that you add harmonically to the melody go great with the piece. I Thoroughly enjoy you're playing and I'm incorporating into my playing as well. Thank you for you're beautiful interpretation

This is the first time I hear the "French Suites". It is a magnificent work superbly performed by Yuan Sheng. I much prefer the piano to the harpsichord. It is much more lively. Thanks for uploading!
Maestro Yuan Sheng has achieved a perfect recording here of Bach's French Suites, my favorite bach pieces; and though I've played through the French Suites at various times, I can only aspire to the perfection of Maestro Yuan Sheng. What an absolute joy to listen to these pieces!
Such a treasure to come across - hours of sheer delight. I am enjoying listening to these as I write at work (journalist). Incrivelmente maravilhoso!! Brilliant Classics does certainly deserve its name here. As commented somewhere in here - true, no sentimental interpretation. But the emotional content of the phrases is conveyed unhindered by blameless perfection, speaking to my Bach heart. The crystal clear attack, vitality and vigor remind me of Gould. What joy, what delight, what a privilege to be able to listen to such heavenly music for two hours on end. Thank you Piano Classics; love you Yuan Sheng.

Just listening to the opening allemande of the first suite. The soft darkness disguises the brilliant dialogue of basically just two voices as they wind in and out, rolling gently into the timeless space where Bach's music long melodic lines levitate.
A superb choice of instruments to better hear Bach's delicate nuanced harmonies in this rendition of his Suites. Wonderful performance by Mr. Sheng as well.

I was fortunate to hear Yuan Sheng play Chopin beautifully in Firenze in April. Listening to this recording he's now become one of my favorite interpreters of Bach!
Best interpretation of French Suites so far. Just the right tempo to hear every single note. Many other pianists perform it too fast.
Yuan Sheng's playing is a real joy, light, fluid and full of feeling. Thanks.

The French Suites are six suites composed by Johann Sebastian Bach between 1722 and 1725. A suite is a group of dances.

For many years I have been thinking that Glenn Gould's interpretation of the French Suites was the nec plus ultra. And now this. I am completely addicted to Yuan Shen's approach to J.S. Bach. It's got all the warmth, transparency and natural understanding of tempi, which I had missed without knowing that all this can be found in this music If only Mr. Sheng plays it.

Fluid, like a river flowing seamlessly, unhindered by elements beyond control. Satisfying to the greatest heavenly heights and even though life may be foreboding, this music so graciously, bravely and brilliantly written by Bach, gives a rational of hope...

Mr Yuan Sheng is a piano professor at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. He is undoubtedly the best known and maybe the only Bach pianist of China. Unfortunately, with UA-cam blocked for access by the the government in that country, Mr Sheng himself cannot see any of these heart-warming comments on his Bach music!
That stinks...and blocked by ants, in stature, relative to Mr Sheng. Maybe comments like the one I just made are the sort they are afraid of?

So, let me get this right, you are saying a govt who does things like going into Tibet and inflicting the horrors they did there, and one that often allows its own citizen's, at least certain portions of them no rights whatsoever, is afraid of some mode of "speech" on the internet?
I'm not saying ours is much better, if any, in the global respect (but they certainly are in the domestic respect ) BUT they don't then try to hide themselves away from criticism by their populace, for fear that their own people might find out the truth and rise up. It's not about him "thriving", it's about him being able to share his gifts with the world, and it not being hoarded by some paranoid govt who thinks the bogey man is hiding around every corner, even the DIGITAL ones. Amazing that virtually ALL the other countries in the world have a free internet, isn't it. Only govts scared to death about their (apparently) tenuous hold, like say you, and North Korea find it necessary to shut out what the world thinks about them. Make any sense to you? And no, I am not CIA, never have been, never will be, and never have I personally dealt with them in any way. Isn't it nice that the world doesn't pull the same kind of crap on YOU, so HE HAS music like Bach's to play? I don't know if that got in previously (I know it didn't in most of the Soviet Union, because I have a friend who started Music Mission Kyiv, and he said they were hearing much of the music (Bach, Brahms, Verdi, etc) for the first time when his group (members of Kyiv orchestra and local auditioned singers) presented it. I clarified HOW I know about that cultural wall, so you would not think "only the CIA would have that information"...it doesn't work that way in a free society...so don't impart what you (apparently) know as a standard as the WORLD'S standard. It is not, it is the small exception (govt wise, obviously population wise China is HUGE).
Feel free to respond, but if you do, please surprise me and actually answer my points (happens about one time in a hundred), instead of just trying to insult me or redirect me to nonsense, it will have no effect on me, or likely most anyone else that reads it. Cheers.
Oh yeah, one more question, would you consider anything I just wrote "hate speech" because I'd like to pin down your definition of it. Yuan Sheng is a truly amazing pianist; he deserves far more recognition by the general public in my humble opinion. He is absolutely amazing; he is able to make music of such wonderfully composed pieces. I have had the pleasure of attending a few of his masterclasses; he is a phenomenal teacher as well!

The sarabande in the first suite is totally poignant (but not at all gushing with sentimentality). An extraordinary achievement in balancing lyricism with control. The tempo is spot on. I can't stop listening to this.
I absolutely love the Sarabande of Bach's French Suite no.6. Especially the opening!!! Absolutely gorgeous to listen to. Shout out to the pianist YUAN SHENG!!!!!!!!!

I will add to the chorus of praise: I really appreciate this beautiful performance, especially the way the performer captures the balance of feelings and clarity that the music of Bach conveys, and which allows what Bach considered the Divine to shine through.

Yuan Sheng takes many ornamental liberties here, but he makes them sing the way Bach would have 300 years ago on the clavichord. Stunning treatment.

Yes, this is sublime ... and yet, the recording by Thurston Dart in 1961on the clavichord still comes back to me after all this time.
Glenn Gould has finally met his match. Yuan Sheng has all but (gracefully) removed the claim as the 'premier interpreter of Bach', from Gould's lore. Never has listening to Bach been so enjoyable, peaceful, impressive.
FWIW: I'm glad I came across Prof. Sheng's recordings and agree they are fine. I love Gould's as well. I don't think myself capable of ranking them. I think that any discussion of who is better, greater, etc. can never be settled objectively with JSB's opinion.

Maestro Yuan Sheng has achieved a perfect recording here of Bach's French Suites, my favorite bach pieces; and though I've played through the French Suites at various times, I can only aspire to the perfection of Maestro Yuan Sheng. What an absolute joy to listen to these pieces!

Incrivelmente maravilhoso!! Brilliant Classics does certainly deserve its name here. As commented somewhere in here - true, no sentimental interpretation. But the emotional content of the phrases is conveyed unhindered by blameless perfection, speaking to my Bach heart. The crystal clear attack, vitality and vigor remind me of Gould. What joy, what delight, what a privilege to be able to listen to such heavenly music for two hours on end. Thank you Piano Classics; love you Yuan Sheng.

Just listening to the opening allemande of the first suite. The soft darkness disguises the brilliant dialogue of basically just two voices as they wind in and out, rolling gently into the timeless space where Bach's music long melodic lines levitate.
