As others have commented, since 1977 when Lazar Berman recorded Années de Pèlerinage, Liszt has gained in popularity and there are many fine performances of the work. As recordings go, however, the remastering of this performance has brought it again to the fore. Berman had a special affinity with this work and I return to his performance time and again. For me it certainly is a Century's recording. Thank you.
Liszt is my greatest inspiration when I paint. It is exhausting to listen to his music and paint at the same time but the results are fantastic. Listening to his music makes the sky always dark and it brings me back to my childhood.
I've heard many-many interpretations of these pieces by many-many pianists, yet, the quality of Berman's music-making, without any unnecessary bravado, is pure joy. Sometimes I feel it can't be any better - it's perfect. I've missed Berman for so long, for some reason he seems to have been forgotten, so thanks a lot for proving that he hasn't.

This Lazar Berman recording was my first experience of these seminal Romantic Movement works. It convinced me I did not know the real Liszt. These piano meditations run parallel to poems that, for example, Shelley wrote as he wandered across southern Europe with his family. Of course, Liszt's piano makes words unnecessary, and Shelley's poems show the eloquence the human voice alone. Read some of Shelley's poems written in Italy, then play the ITALIAN PILGRIMAGE, and you will filled with the glorious spirit of Romanticism
Absolutely awesome, to put it mildly, but the superlatives that should be included here would be too numerous otherwise. However, one almost have to sit in a very quiet room to appreciate music like this, which of course would be ideal, but at times I like to listen while doing other work and it's almost impossible because of variances in the recording/volume levels, which means at times I can't barely hear anything, and other times it becomes too loud. Really annoying and it's obviously part of the portrayal of the music played, but sitting in a mucic hall hearing it live isn't nearly as pronounced but of course much more involving, but maybe somebody can explain this phenomenon, it seems to be particularly pronounced in this recording, so I guess it could be a number of things including how this was uploaded to YT.

This is a reference recording of the années de pèlerinage, but not the only one : you also have Cziffra at EMI, Wilhelm Kempff, Alfred Brendel, Jorge Bolet on Decca not to forget, Jenö Jándó and Aldo Ciccolini on Naxos...Sergio Fiorentino, Edith Farnadi, Lajos Hernadi which is somehow forgotten. When you listen to many versions, you can see clearly the difference between performers!
@@dariodangelo8938Wilhelm Kempff recorded on vinyl the Années de Pèlerinage Suisse, Italy and the "Deux Légendes". Then Deutsche Grammophon label reissued two new editions both on vinyl and CD later. What remains sure as my teacher told me is that Kempff played some other pieces of the repertoire like "Les Jeux d'eau à la villa d'Este" or "Tarantelle" from "Venezia e Napoli" but we only have, still left, some very short audio samples by an amateur which were taken during Kempff's legendary Liszt Concert in July 1959, and it is said that these are only archives at the Liszt Music Academy of Budapest with no real particular interest as is the case for Bermann's recording. However, Könneman Music Library have also a copy of this concert where Kempff plays the unknown pieces that weren't recorded on CD.

I knew that Kempff recorded extracts from the annees (I have a LP with part of the 2nd year annee, Italy, not 1st Suisse...and the two Legends). Among more recent versions, that of Bertrand Chamayou is outstanding (my personal favorite). Also of note: Muza Rubackyte, and that of Daniel Grimwood (the 3 "years" only, no supplemental Venezia e Napoli), especially as he plays an 1851 Erard. Chamayou and Grimwood both have a superb sense of the shape of each "year," with Grimwood in particular finding appropriate opportunities to segue directly from one piece to the next.
Berman's Liszt was the first recording of Liszt I had. So, I admit I am partial toward Berman. There is the inevitable comparing him to titans like Richter or Gilels...For me, I only have to listen to the Petrarch Sonnets. Berman's interpretation of these works is hard to describe. Also, thank you for the opening commentary. Very profound. Quete de Verite indeed...
This Berman recording of the complete AdP was my introduction to Liszt as well, and I benefited a lot from getting the CD set with the comprehensive notes by Humphrey Searle. A superb performance, for which I still have great respect and fondness; thank you for posting! If asked for a modern recommendation, however, I would probably suggest the version by Bertrand Chamayou, along with those of Muza Rubackyte and Daniel Grimwood (the latter minus Venezia e Napoli, but played on a mid-19th-century Erard). We are fortunate to have a great many more pianists who take Liszt seriously than back in the mid-20th century! Also, little by little performances by some of the unjust neglected great Liszt interpreters are surfacing: my musical life has been greatly enriched by Louis Kentner, Sergio Fiorentino, Edith Farnadi and Gunnar Johansen (among others). :)

Lazar Berman,one of the best pianists in th world, is my favorite player on this monument for the piano,considering other many great compositions in piano literature.I saw him alive playing it all.There are other very good Liszt present and past players,but as it is titled,this is a reference recording.I have the original 1977 LP (ccpied to CD and the original LP is intact as I took always care of my recordings).Many years ago,pianists did not take risks playing it complete in concert.I loved Liszt music very early.I define him monumental and sublime.

Humberto Muñoz I would like to listen to Arrau’s rendition, but I can’t find his complete Recording set of “Annees de Pelerinage” (UA-cam or not...cd...nothing, just “extracts”).
Ponderous performance in poor sound. Possibly the most overrated Liszt recording out there. Ciccolini's recording for EMI from the 1960s blows Berman completely away, technically, musically and sonically.

I love the sleepy, non-rushed start to year 2, and the way it builds thereafter. This has always been my favorite interpretation.

Sylvia Sass Fiorentino was one of my teachers (what a Genius...🤩). Did Kempff play complete set?
@@dariodangelo8938Wilhelm Kempff recorded on vinyl the Années de Pèlerinage Suisse, Italy and the "Deux Légendes". Then Deutsche Grammophon label reissued two new editions both on vinyl and CD later. What remains sure as my teacher told me is that Kempff played some other pieces of the repertoire like "Les Jeux d'eau à la villa d'Este" or "Tarantelle" from "Venezia e Napoli" but we only have, still left, some very short audio samples by an amateur which were taken during Kempff's legendary Liszt Concert in July 1959, and it is said that these are only archives at the Liszt Music Academy of Budapest with no real particular interest as is the case for Bermann's recording. However, Könneman Music Library have also a copy of this concert where Kempff plays the unknown pieces that weren't recorded on CD.

I knew that Kempff recorded extracts from the annees (I have a LP with part of the 2nd year annee, Italy, not 1st Suisse...and the two Legends). Among more recent versions, that of Bertrand Chamayou is outstanding (my personal favorite). Also of note: Muza Rubackyte, and that of Daniel Grimwood (the 3 "years" only, no supplemental Venezia e Napoli), especially as he plays an 1851 Erard. Chamayou and Grimwood both have a superb sense of the shape of each "year," with Grimwood in particular finding appropriate opportunities to segue directly from one piece to the next.
Berman's Liszt was the first recording of Liszt I had. So, I admit I am partial toward Berman. There is the inevitable comparing him to titans like Richter or Gilels...For me, I only have to listen to the Petrarch Sonnets. Berman's interpretation of these works is hard to describe.

This Berman recording of the complete AdP was my introduction to Liszt as well, and I benefited a lot from getting the CD set with the comprehensive notes by Humphrey Searle. A superb performance, for which I still have great respect and fondness; thank you for posting! If asked for a modern recommendation, however, I would probably suggest the version by Bertrand Chamayou, along with those of Muza Rubackyte and Daniel Grimwood (the latter minus Venezia e Napoli, but played on a mid-19th-century Erard). We are fortunate to have a great many more pianists who take Liszt seriously than back in the mid-20th century! Also, little by little performances by some of the unjust neglected great Liszt interpreters are surfacing: my musical life has been greatly enriched by Louis Kentner, Sergio Fiorentino, Edith Farnadi and Gunnar Johansen (among others). :)

Lazar Berman,one of the best pianists in th world, is my favorite player on this monument for the piano,considering other many great compositions in piano literature.I saw him alive playing it all.There are other very good Liszt present and past players,but as it is titled,this is a reference recording.I have the original 1977 LP (ccpied to CD and the original LP is intact as I took always care of my recordings).Many years ago,pianists did not take risks playing it complete in concert.I loved Liszt music very
early.I define him monumental and sublime.

Bon après y en a qui aime Berman plus melodiste ( y a rien de mal) qui effectivement peut s'avérer transcendantal. Chacun ces goûts quoi lol.

Ponderous performance in poor sound. Possibly the most overrated Liszt recording out there. Ciccolini's recording for EMI from the 1960s blows Berman completely away, technically, musically and sonically.
