I use a plugin by Studio DMI called Space Control. Its multi-band, and it has a built-in phase limiter thus eliminating the phase issues typically associated with stereo widening. 😎 Edit: I wrote this before watching your entire video. Come to find out, you have Space Control too lol!
when you gonna leave PT man... when will yall realize pro tools is just a a money flipper / quater quota meeting tool for which ever company owns it at the moment. have you ever asked yourself why it has been sold off so many times? why the code for UI and the internal processing has BARELY been updated in the past 10 years.???? PT is a shell corporation at this point . its just riding off market share and name/brand recognition as the "DAW proffesionals use" or the "industry standard". when in reality there are quite a few daws that blow PT OUT THE WATER..... ( s.o to r.e.a.p.e.r ! we are definitely the most powerful daw right now, studio one is amazing also. if you use the new mac chips, reaper performs the best . and it knows how to properly use all of the cpu's core processors )
@@GgWifi-ot2sh I don’t think he will anytime soon. He is artists and an engineer with clients, and most of them use protools. When you’re doing edits back and forth between parties it’s easier to do so when you’re all working from the same platform. Someone like myself who uses Logic Pro X, that just does this as a hobby can simply pick a DAW other than protools, and not really be affected in my day to day operations.
@@luvitluvitbaby i hear you ... im in hollywood and of course you do have to be pro tools literate (currently) i still take clients mixes and dump them into reaper tho. you're right it is easier to just pull it up in pro tools. but i usually just look at the song structure on pt and copy it over to my reaper templete. it might be 3 min of extra work. really im anticipating this new file type/format thats being developed. it allows projects to be opened in any daw, while keeping the project info and plugin chains in tact . that will be here very soon....
Youre right about the haas delay! The cool thing about it though is you can sort of tune where those frequencies cancel just by putting your delay on it and going down to mono whilst changing the delay times to make sure you like how it sounds in mono then go back stereo 9 times out of 10 the width feels right
Sidewidener is the secret sauce bro!! Nobody talks about it but it makes ANY sound as wide as you want. Even a mono sound can go totally stereo and even wider all while retaining mono compatibility. It also has a correlation meter so you can make sure theres no phasing! Dont sleep yall ive got a couple videos about it on my channel
In the car, the widening pushes the sound to the back speakers only and when it wasn't wide the sound came from the front speakers mostly. This was a good observation
These are the videos you need to do more of. Educational and can apply to many situations. Rather than "insert plugin here for this very specific thing".
Totally understand! This channel has 470 videos uploaded at the time of this release. I really enjoy offering a diverse array of content that people can come to for a variety of reasons! If you click the mixing tips and tricks playlist on the channel you ll get just that. If you click plugin breakdowns on the channel youll get solely that. If you clicked audionerds podcast playlist thats all youll get. Its a big happy diverse channel! Pick your poison
Awesome info, A1 content. To reach more people and spread the knowledge, make it a little more interesting visually (two different cameras, zooming in and out, broll, motion graphics, etc) love your content Brodie wish more people got to experience this as well 💯
Great video, and often we don't think much about using certain plugins and the problems they can cause in terms of tone and phase issues. The last time I used a stereo widening plugin it sounded really weird, so I'm glad it wasn't my imagination :D
I use expanse 3d for widening and always use a correlation meter and mono mix cubes even though that plug in doesn't cause phasing mostly in most instances. When it actually gives the sounds their own space and they sound more distinct if used right.
I usually mix in mono first then stereo, but feels like im gonna have to start checking the final thing in mono again to be sure.... used to use waves Inphase but they updated it and I cant download it so I stopped. Great tips tho. Throwing a mono mix into the fray?!?... never thought of that
Real takeaway should be. Use high tier stereo widener (ideally ozone or leapwing, pirate if you need to, don't use AA it doesn't sound better than leapwing and it's bloated and kills cpu) and only use it to shrink rather than widen. Also if one element is crazy rather fix it in isolation rather than fucking up stound stage in master bus
why dont you use the stereo image just a tad bit or side chain that specific sound and use a wide image on he sidechain with out changin the original sound
Cubase's stock stereo wide plugin is 100 percent mono compatible. It is also multiband so you can choose to just widen the upper frequencies if you want.
best way to get rid of phase is to not using phasey signals in the first place guys. or you can fix them with a free mid side eqing trick on your daw for free. buying a fancy plugin to correct it is gonna give you just " OK" results. not "good" results or " great" results. and you can spot these issues again with a free meter called SPAN.
But also I know a lot of EDM guys and girls that sometimes play with phase on purpose. This video is just to IDENTIFY what phase can do to a signal especially in mono. There’s a ton of techniques and tools out there related to phase! We just got to be careful when using them and the best way to equip ourselves is to understand what those moves can cause or create sometimes! Great point tho!
Yo Devon, where did you get this plugin from? I've looked everywhere online and can't find it... Did they stop selling it? I've been wanting to get this for a while.
Application the tip bro!! I almost always add a lil width to my keys, and sometimes even to an instrument buss, but I'll be checking in mono now first 🙃
Be very careful! Not here to say you cant do this but just helping to identify what your doing when adding some of these stereo widening techniques!

AHHHH interesting compensation for the HAAS effect! Def will try
The free Ozone Imager in mode 2 collapses to mono really well. The way it widens is different than a typical haas effect. It sounds really good.
There's a free plugin called Wider by Polyverse Music that does exactly that (widens while keeping stereo correlation).

Awesome thank you!
two plugins that i found doing miracles when it comes to stero widening is DRMS from mathew lane and the vertigo vms 3 from plugin alliance
YOOOO DRMS is MAGICAL!!
AHA! That's what's happening. Had 0 idea what was going on. Nailed it with the thumbnail lol!
This is why I love VSX I can check for Phase distortion also using correlation meter in logic

As Devvon gets more experienced so do WE 🙏🏼 appreciate you!
I make mistakes and also learn from them everyday! Thank you for supporting the channel
Wow that was so unexpectedly better with the Space Control on hooly
That's the lesson I needed. Thank you.

Space Control is 🔥
Stageone by leapwing is another great tool to try out, not as advanced as spacecontrol but gets the job done
Going for ghost sounds so i add it after a reverb. On mono device, the percussion and vocals are more prominent. #PhaseMeteringToo

What about when you do soft panning with background vox and such

Yall heard him!
Be careful WITH
adding stereo WIDTH! 😑

@@HelpMeDevvon awesome 😂😍 is that on purpose ???

I got 2 of these on my master channel. Is that good?😬
TRicky Mixing but clever!
Loved it!
Can you review Bark of Dog please?😅
Thank you!
I have compassion for those that listen to music on mono speakers or iphone... and im definitely not mixing for them...

At least on acoustica's website they stopped selling it.
Get me that gold EQ my man 🙏 pls 😂
This is why I stopped using stereo imaging plugins they kill mono capability
Leave it to the people engineers
Simple fix
Make your music create your song.
Get away from it.
Keep it simple

no rules when it comes to making records my g
I never use stereo widening so I'm Gucci! Time to figure out why and when to use stereo widening! 😂
My guy is a scientist at mixing. Solid advise sir 🔥🔥🔥
Application the tip bro!! I almost always add a lil width to my keys, and sometimes even to an instrument buss, but I'll be checking in mono now first 🙃
I like all your videos brother 🇰🇷
Question. could you bus the stereo widening plugin so that way the mono signal is still present? does that cause separate issues?
super helpful. I made this mistake for an album straight and ran into these exact problems. My sounds disappeared on certain speakers
Fully correct bro it happened to me
Devvon can you share your current vocal chain???
I already incorporated your eq and compressor just wondering what else you use
I can make a video on that i got u!
@@HelpMeDevvonyou really are the man bro🔥 you, wavy, and sky really be helping us little guys out without question 🔥🔥
