I miss these days so much, thank you for bringing back lost memories.
It's not every day that you hear ATC say to you: "Traffic at your 12 O'clock, An F-22"
what minute ?
@@dnpxs 17:53
Fly into HNL...you get F22 traffic daily, along with 135s, 17s, 10s, 5s and all sort so foreign friendlies on the regular.
pbandj37 17s? Huh .
pbandj37 JF17?
Loving the new "autoland" feature, really butters that thing in!!!
Your snack bag is almost identical to what I load up in the plane for my 2yr old! LOL
hahahaha
how is his diabetes?
The end reminds me of the time back in 2008 I got to play around with giant "toy" planes out in the Mojave bone yard. Probably one of the most memorable days ever. I climbed up into a Delta L1011, a KLM 747-3 and even an old cargo 747-200 PRE-GUTTED! It was just flown in so all the classic analog gauges and engineer station were there. It's crazy how high you sit up there.
I grew up in N. California. My two brothers and my sister would rent a Cessna and fly into the Nut Tree Airport. My brother was the oldest at 15 being the pilot, and people would stare at us LOL. Great memories. RIP my idol, my mentor, my big brother!
what happened ?
@@junaidali6411 My brother was a retired CHP who had fought a type of bone marrow cancer for 7 years. He died 2 years ago this month.
So sorry for your loss.....he's looking down on you.......
My dad was an employee for North West in Minneapolis, his first job was doing hull mods to extend the life of there 747-100 fleet, ultimately the mods didn't work as intended and were more expensive than just buying new planes, so most were just scrapped or donated, one of these with the hull mods can be seen at the Smithsonian which you can walk up to and inside.
Spent 16 years wrenching on those NWA DC-10s, and did work on 6602, and 6603 many times over the years.
Sad to see them like they are now 6602 was #40 off the line, and 6603 was # 45 off the line in Everett. Both delivered in May 1970.
To bad I couldn't make out the tail number on that DC-10.
Nice video as usual.
uhh DC10's were made in Long Beach not Everett.
@@mannfan12 Ahhhh 6602 and 6603 are both 747-151's they were made in Everett.
By stating those DC-10's, I may have led you to think I was including the 747's. Didn't mean to confuse.
I worked on every model of DC-10 made, including the KC-10, and the DC-10-15, of which there were very few of the -15's made.
The DC-10-15 were a high performance model of the DC-10-10, built for flying out of high elevation airports in South America. CF6-50 engines on the -15. Hot Rod.
That DC-10 is a -30, but which one would be nice to know.
I remember those airplanes when they were up and ruining, in good shape, and ready to fly, breaks my heart to see them like that.
See those airplanes didn't have maintenance data computers in them to tell you what's wrong, so when they broke, the mechanics were the maintenance computers.
Super cool! Thanks for taking us along.
That's the life. Enjoy!
Very cool. What a way to travel.
It was refreshing to see you taxi into Piedmont -Hawthorne. My former boss operates IJC from that facility. Richard and his staff are really good people.
Excellent! Thanks for the flight and superb views ........ drone shots in the airport !!!!!!
Got my PPL at VKX back in 2003. David runs a great little strip!
That is so awesome flying across the USA & the globe and visiting diffrent airpost along the route. I going to be able to do that someday.
Another EXCELLENT Guthmiller episode! Thank you for the experiences.
Great video. Love the snack bag... Fly safe!
I know laurinburg maxton all too well. love that place.
Man.. a 49 years old 747-100, great!
This was amazing...landing at Norfolk is always fun lol and that airport with the Boneyard was cool af! Thanks for sharing :)
That was AWESOME! Really cool to see that airspace and happy to see another BO video! Thanks for sharing and keep'em coming!
Hey Matt, are you still leasing 7HP? You mentioned fixing the leaky windshield and reminded me that when you did around the world you leased the plane, just wondering if you ever pulled the trigger and brought it.
Stefan Desrosiers i think somewhere between a year and a half ago and two years ago he bought N367HP outright
haha he backed off the throttle because there were a lot of houses around. what a gentleman!
I'm not an expert and this subject is generally confusing for even pilots. But he was adjusting his prop pitch, not his throttle. He was landing, so his setup likely had him set his prop pitch for max takeoff performance which means the prop will be noisier. He can back off this setting to more of a coarser cruise setting, but this will affect his takeoff performance in the event of a go-around. If you setup well, and are commiting to land, some pilots will back off to make less noise. But it's important to be aware of this in the event of an emergency.
before that 47 departed, he was warned of the prop wash from the bonanza.
You should get started with beef jerky. Teriyaki flavor is the best.
That was probably one of the coolest vids yet. That jumbo jet grave yard was awesome!
Did you have to contact atc about flying the drone? I know the FAA has become really strict about flying them near airports, though that might only apply to those with controlled airspace.
Matt out here with the goods...
How did you manage those epic drone shots in the airport?
I was wondering the same thing. What Drone did you use and how did you get it to launch if it was a DJI?
Regardless, great video! I thoroughly enjoy your relaxed attitude and the camera placements.
Used to fly that DC-10 you taxied by.
How were you able to get drone footage at the airport? You called the tower? Right around 26:00
First vid I've seen of yours. Never been off the ground exept in a simulator 🤣. Deffiently subbing. Watching videos like this are the next best thing. Btw was the abandoned airport in North Carolina?
JtTaylor2026 I think it’s MEB in Maxton NC.
your departure controller out of VKX just recently retired!
Great video !
Matt, I'd love to fly with you! I don't know if it's for the flying...or for the snacks!
Sun'n'Fun, a bit late on this one Matt, that was five months ago... I found the tour of Laurinburg-Maxton Airport really interesting, so I went on a search for the history. It was a former Army Air Corp Glider base, which trained the crews that flew into Normandy on D-Day, it was only opened until 1945 and it is still the base for the Army's Golden Knights Parachute Team... Thnx for the stop... As a veteran myself I always find it interesting to research bases of the past...
Thank you for your service.
Thanks.
First time I seen your Channel thanks for showing the DC area that was cool you seem really smooth on the controls not that I'm a pilot or anything but you learned well from someone...✌
My ex employer flew his Piper Malibu over Nellis AFB and got his license yanked by the FAA in Vegas.
He dialed in Las Vegas New Mexico instead of Las Vegas Nevada in the auto pilot. He was flying from Santa Clara County CA... I LOL when my coworker told me about the F-18 diverting them out of Nellis
Why not the world's oldest continuing operation airport: College Park MD?
23rdFoot funny, I live here
Guess I missed your Norfolk arrival .. bummer would have gotten some landing shots.
Northumberland county pa. Home sweet home
Funny that the JPI turns red at 2700 as 2700 is a permitted value. It should be red if indicating 2701 or greater.
Aircraft boneyards are fascinating places.
Yes, but sad too.
KMEB?🤓
Hi Matt, question on your wing camera: do you have a power supply routed out to the camera? Or do you you put up with the limitations of the battery?
I'm pretty sure thats to record the audio of their headsets. I could be wrong, but I think thats what most of them do now.
@@YetiThaGr8 that's the cockpit camera, op is asking about the camera outside the cabin

I have a question what is that you put on the tip of your Sony

I do have same camera with polarizer and I like to get one of that.. it is a converter?
Great Video! You got my sub.
-- Wow, audio is excellent, little noise.
Impressive landings per Gopro view (realizing the weather factor, last landing).
Nice video and editing.
Thank you.
If you are back in the DC area again sometime, I would love to say hi.
I wish I could fly a plane. I guess I can do the next best thing and befriend a pilot
Matt
How many flight hours have you accumulated since you began flying so far?
And I thought you had to have perfect vision to get your pilot license?! I’ve been misinformed my entire life. Damn
Pretty sure that's only if you want to have a. Commercial licence but even then I don't think this very strict. If you can have 20/20 and clear forward vision with the aid of glasses or contact lenses then that is also acceptable.
If you have a sight impairment which cannot be solved with glasses or contacts (for example colour blindness, glaucoma, blindness in one eye) then you wouldn't be able to get a licence.
I can't watch your vids before i go to sleep because i want snacks
at 13:50, what was that red building that is across from the old Washington Stock Exchange? I used to know but have since forgotten and I can't find anything when I try to look it up. Thanks.
Yogurt is milk and white chocolate is chocolate without the cacao.
Fly that airspace every time I launch. W00
So, you don't like watching your windshield blow bubbles after you wash your airplane?
Was that laurinburg maxton airfield with the "abandon" aircraft? I'm asking because according to a website I was looking at, that is suppose to be closed to the public.
Great video, BTW.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurinburg%E2%80%93Maxton_Airport
Seeing that thumbnail and title made me think you were flying into the Nevada Test Site, maybe following a Janet flight.
Also .. dang I thought the interstate on the ground was crazy 😜... the sky kings are nuts 🥜
Carbohydrate, Aviate, Navigate, Communicate?
Is your plane capable of travelling from United state to uk
in its current configuration probalby not, i'd bet you'd need some extra fuel tanks in the back to make it in one go
Ohhh... to be young and eat what ever you want. Those were the days.
So you were in Norfolk, where was the 747? Fentress? Did you say and I missed it?
G Grotz that was laurinburg maxton KMEB in NC. Been there a bunch.
I thought Area 51 was the most restricted airspace in the US... And also an F-22 for traffic, too bad we could not see it.
Can someone explain the "Bonanza" call/callsign ?
J Bee he’s telling the atc the airplane manufacturer of the aircraft He’s flying, same way you would say cessna (tail number)
Pilot=Wears glasses to see. Not pilot=Wears aviators to be seen

me: so u raiding area 51 too?
@Grey Jay No not off the wing. They will just shoot you down.
Lol "most restricted"my ass, more the most restricted you can still legally fly into. Me thinks lots of airspace out west is far more restricted.
It was a bust
My immediate thought lol
@@mannfan12 they'll intercept you well before that
Finally. A left-of-centerline landing!!! I knew it had to happen sometime. Perhaps us mere-mortal pilots have a chance.
I find Bose sets brings in ATC alot more clear then anything else Ive ran. Ive been asking other pilots opinions on what they run for treble levels more clear. What do you run on your head to bring other pilots or ATC more understandable. The noise cancellation is incredible. But asking other pilots there opinions to see what y'all run I might find a better set. Lossed mossed my hearing in Iraq so just asking around. Safe flying my friend.
lulz. you tellem, Shortie!
Practice... I had an instructor during my primary training that insisted that being sloppy on the ground was "unprofessional" and would insist I land on the center line and taxi on the center line as well. After I got my certificate I found I was very comfortable on narrow runways, short runways took a little longer.
@@anonymous-nobody1 if only I knew exactly where the centerline was when in the cockpit. Perhaps I’ll invest in a GoPro. I have been told it’s lined up with my right shoulder when in left seat but how exactly can I know if my nose wheel is on it. Perhaps I’ll assume that it always is.
I used to flight instruct at Potomac back way before 9/11 when it was still Friendly/P.G. Airpark. Larry DeAngelis was the designated examiner there in those days. Back then it only had about 1600 feet of runway due to a land dispute. Good times long gone. We wound up moving the operation to Maryland airport a few miles south. I still fly over it often going in and out of DCA.
I'm confused. Wasn't VKX formerly Rose Valley Airport?
There's nothing like a trip that's measured in SPH snacks per hour. If you had an engine out & had to spend all night up there, you wouldn't go hungry!
Hi Matt, great video! The part I liked the most was your approach to the Norfolk, VA airspace., where you were directed 15 miles out before being able to land! Gosh, it's important to have the experience you have in flying by instruments in order to accomplish such an approach. No doubt, you're a heck of a pilot! Take care and fly safely. Regards, Eduardo. P.S.: don't forget to post your flight to Alaska. I look forward to it!
30 minutes of Matt?
Day is definitely saved :)
Well stated.
Keep up with the snacks and the balance of the plane will change!
This was epic Matt. What a cool experience seeing that 74.
13:37 That moment when you're watching a Matt Guthmiller video and you hear EnterElysium's outro music.
But then again, I called my health insurance provider earlier this week and I swear the hold music they had was straight out of one of Matt's video's
I was a State Licensed "Security Officer" and I was Invited to apply for work in a Secure Area which required a High Grade Governmental Security Clearance.
I was informed that they had submitted over 800 Names in the previous 6 Weeks and had yet to receive a single Approval.
I advised them that My Clearance would likely come through almost Immediately, as I had previously held a High Grade Military Security Clearance and was therefore known to the Intelligence Community who were Vetting all Applicants.
The State Manager of the Security Company told Me that if that happened, he would buy Me a Beer.
The next morning I received a phone call from the Receptionist of the Security Company, asking if I could come into the Office at around 4 pm, because apparently the State Manager owed Me a Beer.

Why? It's always all about Matt.
Little did they know, but the ATC they'd run into was known to his buddies as *_'Ron, the world's greatest practical joker!'_* Seizing the opportunity which life had presented him, Ron immediately contacted the incoming Special Forces team. _"Guys,"_ Ron said to them, _"I have inside info on today's drill, and I'm tipping you off. The terrorists have penetrated airport security and landed their Bonanza right beside an unoccupied but fully fueled 747. You are to disable their Bonanza using explosives. Also, the terrorists on board the 747 are highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat. Don't let them embarrass your team in that regard. Good luck guys."_
^ this is why should should ALWAYS read the comments. Almost spit my coffee on my keyboard. Thanks for a good long laugh.
How can there be terrorists aboard an unoccupied plane?
@@BertGrink That's like saying "There's an EMPTY glass on the table with MILK in it." :0
ATCkeepsUsafe, you see it's called a "Joke". It's an old time tradition wherein humorous, embarrassing, impossible, or nonsensical information is proffered to elicit a laugh response in those hearing or reading the story.
Occasionally there have been those who have mistaken the nonsensical elements of the Joke for truth. These people as a whole group are called "idiots". A subgroup of these idiots know better, but intentionally treat the nonsensical elements with a sober, often hostile response. While still technically idiots, this group is often given the identifying moniker of "asshole", "dick", "prick", "dickhead", "cocksucker", or "fuckwad" due to their proclivity for ruining jokes for everyone else. Though all apply to varying degrees, the "cocksucker" version is thought to the most literal and accurate.
Awesome shot of the two nose to nose... I guess you guys have different rules about drones and airfields huh?

You make IFR look so darn interesting! I need to get my Maryland-3 PIN. Potomac looks amazing. My favorite line: "Met my buddy in Norfolk who just soloed...an F-18" (very smooth flex)
Shall I turn on the runway lights? That's just what they're expecting us to do.
Cool! When I saw the title I wondered if you might be visiting the 'invade Area 51'event.
I'm only 5 1/2 minutes into this video, and I have to say something that's bothering me. The PIC in this video has his head everywhere except doing a regular scan of what's out the window! I know they're IFR, I know it's a clear night and you can see farther and clearer, but I can't believe how much time has gone by so far without a glance out the window. I'm a Private Pilot as well, but I only have my ASEL ticket. Not instrument-rated yet. But even as a low-hour, not-much-experience Private Pilot, wow does this make me nervous. Any other pilots out there who can confirm what we're seeing? lf I'm wrong, let me know. Thank you in advance.
Andy Smith his auto pilot is turned on so there’s not as much needed for him to do.
During IFR flight youre supposed to focus on your instruments and avoid getting distracted. Even clear nights can become very disorienting when ground lights are no longer visible. Its like flying in complete blackness. The PIC was doing the right thing here. Looking out the window too much in IFR can cause bad things to happen. Very seasoned pilots can become quickly disoriented and unable recover. If youre not IFR trained, you shouldnt make posts like this.
Oh hey, never expected to see ROC in one of these videos!
I've been to that boneyard! I saw the screenshot and knew it had to be. Confirmed when you landed on Runway 5 by that old MD-11. I tried to talk the boneyard owners to let me do a story there...they weren't having it. LOL. That place is COOL!
Where is this at, Chris?
Very cool you flew into KMEB on your second leg. Took my dad there soon after getting my private in 2012. They had several 707s, 727s and a KLM 777. Looks like the planes have changed and a LOT added, but those Oshkosh support equipment are there to stay!
