If you know the secrets, you can get African violets to flower. This video shows you how to get African violets to bloom continuously in your home. The tips are to grow African violets in the right exposure with the right lighting. You also need to water them correctly and fertilize them. African violets also require repotting about every six months.

1st step: keep them in northern facing window.
2nd step: put them on a humidity tray if you live in dry climate.
3rd step: feed them 1 a month, use a proper amount of fertilizer.
4th step: remember to repot them every 6 to 12 months.
They prefer northern facing windows. Otherwise this is great.

All of your advice seems spot on , but what i have been doing for years and it seems to be working ..I walk up to my African Violets and say " I Command Thee To Bloom " ,,,,,,,,,,its always worked for me

My mother received a African violet last summer, 2019, while she was in the hospital. It has bloomed off and on since then with no fertilizer and no repotting at all. It’s sitting on a table that gets the evening morning sun. She’s 80 so I take care of her watering of plants.

Very informative video! I keep my av's on the dry side. I had one that got stem/crown rot (the leaves/stems we're very limpy) and I got it to recover by replanting in 2/3 perlite and 1/3 av soil. It is non stop flowering now. I also use Jack's (water soluble 20-20-20) fertilizer. Trace amounts every time I water. Learning a lot. Az🌵here.

I found this video helpful. Do you have any advice on running violets? do you have to prop up the runners or anything special to improve airflow and prevent morl?

Debra, you're welcome. Thanks for watching! They do well in plastic pots. One reason is that plastic doesn't dry out as fast as other materials.

When you re-pot, does it need to be into a larger pot? If so, how much larger?
Jennifer Abbott, Whether you go up a pot size will depend on the plant. Often with African violets, you repot into the same pot. But you may need to go up a pot size if the plant has grown quite a bit. If you do that, it would just be one pot size up--so just a little bigger. For instance, going from a 3-inch pot to a 4-inch pot. To determine whether you stay in the same pot or go up a pot size, you want to check for what I call the 2/3 plant to 1/3 pot ratio. You always want 2/3 plant to 1/3 pot--meaning you have more plant than pot. This also is the case with the roots. 2/3 roots to 1/3 soil in the pot. How often do you water? Do you water from the top or the bottom?
I had it before when I was only 12 years old now I'm 53 so I cannot imagine how precious that African violets now huh I just plant it on a pcs.of charcoals before.

Ive had an African violet for 2 years now, its in a terrarium that has a humidity of about 80% and the terrarium has a nutrient rich substrate but It hasn’t bloomed since I got it. Could it just be the plant? Is it the environment its in? It looks good and has a good amount of leaves no curling, burning, or pests
Nobody Cares, It is most likely the lighting. African violets are picky about their lighting in terms of blooming. If there is too little or too much, they won't bloom. How is the lighting?
@@HealthyHouseplants the terrarium is using T8 full spectrum light and the violet is in the center towards the back
@@nobodycares7720 I would try playing around with the lighting a bit. It may be getting light for too many hours a day. African violets are not high light plants. In nature, they grow in the shade. So you'll want 8 hours or less light on them. How much will also depend on the variety. Some may require even less hours. I didn't ask if it is a miniature African violet. They tend to be a little trickier to get blooming, as well.
What can cause an African Violet to produce smaller blooms than it originally produced when it was first bought?

Gina, You're very welcome! It is likely a lack of nutrients and potentially growth hormone, which growers use. A natural growth hormone, which is also a fertilizer, is alfalfa meal. To get the plant to produce bigger blooms again, I would repot and add some alfalfa meal to the new potting soil, and then regular fertilizing to keep the blooms big. I have a violet that was in bloom when I got it about 9 mos. ago and it has not rebloomed . I have fertilized it etc.

blue serenity, You don't need to prune an African violet from the center to get it to flower. Most likely, the plant is not growing in the correct lighting. African violets are picky about lighting. They will continue to produce leaves but not flower if they aren't in the right spot. They generally require an unobstructed north-facing window or full-spectrum lighting. Where are you growing the plant? Additionally, they don't like to go dry. To promote flowering, you need to keep them moist but not soggy. Pruning them is a good idea, though, as it keeps them looking good and allows for getting rid of old leaves that can attract pests. M Gh, You're welcome, and thanks for watching. Dry coffee grounds are fine for african violets, as a mulch. So you can sprinkle them on top of the soil. They will add a little acidity to the soil and will help keep the beneficial bacteria in the soil healthy. That, in turn, keeps the soil healthy, which is great for the plants.

Would a grow light be OK or just a northern window? I had mine under a grow light in front of a northern window and it was blooming beautifully. I deadheaded it and it has buds but has stopped blooming. I haven't tried the humidity pot but I will.
Patricia Boynton, Unobstructed northern windows--meaning not trees or buildings or anything outside to obstruct light--generally works very well. However, a grow light can also help it along. If it stopped blooming, you might want to repot. African violets require repotting every 6 months. And the humidity tray does help.
Do african violets like epson salt as fertilizer????
Mindy De Britos, thanks for watching! African violets do like a little epsom salt, which is magnesium sulfate, as fertilizer. Many African violet fertilizers will include it, but you can also do an epsom salt soil drench once every month or two. Put 1/4-teaspoon of epsom salt in a gallon of water and mix well. Pour the mixture on the African violet soil, being careful not to splash on the leaves. If you do, rinse gently with some fresh water. Drain the plants well before putting them back on their saucers. An epsom salt soil drench is a good idea if you have an African violet that seems to be stunted in growth or has yellowing leaves. (And you've determined that the plant isn't being kept too wet.)
How large of a pot do they need? I heard that smaller is often better?
KIana Uhlmann, Smaller is better. You want to have 2/3 plant to 1/3 pot for the healthiest African violets. So the pot size will be dictated by the size of the plant.

Barbara Hansen, I like a soil called Promix Bx, because it is water retentive while also being well draining. I will also soon be doing a video on how to make your own mix, so stay tuned. Here is a link to Promix: amzn.to/3zYUIM3 (It only comes in large bags and is not inexpensive, but it is a great soil for all kinds of potted plants.)
I don't have a north facing window where I can put them.
papermason, You can put them under fullspectrum lighting or a couple of feet away from a southern or eastern facing window.

Can i use international flowering fertilizer for african violets
Lucian Sotingco. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by international? Do you mean a fertilizer for flowering plants? Yes, you can. But if the NPK is high--those numbers on the fertilizer--higher than 10-10-10--you will want to only give the African violets the fertilizer at half strength. So if the instructions say 1 teaspoon per half gallon of water, for instance, put in 1/2 teaspoon instead. If you aren't sure, just give the food at half-strength to be on the safe side. Too much fertilizer can burn the roots and damage the plants. Let me know if you have any more questions! And thanks for watching.

@@luciansotingco6039 No worries. I figured that's what you meant. Use a light mix for African violets that drains well, yet retains moisture. If you are going to add peat moss or vermiculite to the soil, use only one, as they both retain water. Neither one promotes drainage. Do the soils have perlite in them?
How about geraniums outside

I wondered if the products for feeding indoor plants would be good for feeding them too. I live in humid Houston. They do pretty well in my outside pots, just wondering about feeding.
@@Makmurf Okay, gotcha! Yes, indoor fertilizers can often be used on outdoor plants. It does depend on the plants as far as what formulation and pH level they require, but geraniums will do well with most well-balanced, organic fertilizers. So you could even use the African violet food on them. Let me know if you have any more questions!

@@HealthyHouseplants 7months ago, the time when I bought them. I think it has something to do with the fertilizer that the gardener used to the av. They're very nice when I bought them but now they look limpy. Maybe I will try to use diff. fertilizer asap.
@@kokielove1461 , By limpy do you mean the leaves are droopy? That could also be a sign of root rot. Is soil very heavy and staying wet?
