I just separated my AF last night from the suckers. This video help a lots and what I was doing wrong. Pulling the bottom leaves I kept them but forgot to label them. I've got them in soil. I have them in big pots lol, so much stuff I have to shop for but I want them beautifully shaped and blooming. The blooms were starting but the suckers were crowding them up and flowers drying up under the huge leaves. Thank you for you video
It will! I bought two for my house but forgot them in my front porch this summer around July, they dried out and went mega crusty and looked super dead. Gave them to my mom and I'd say in about a month or two they were back full bloom. I couldn't believe it lol.
@@cadavher Lol can confirm we forgot to bring ours back inside once and they got all burnt. After a few days they were back to normal. They’re pretty tough lol
oh i love the suckers, haha, and i use a tiny tiny watering can, and dont bottom water because it causes rot for me and i use 50 perilite,/50 soil, not as much rot that way
Hey there! Loved how in depth you went in the video and how you did not skip through any stages. I do have a question though. Could you put the rocks in the bottom of the planter instead of in the saucer for a cleaner look or put the rocks at the bottom of an ornamtal container that you could then place the grow pot in? You could still place the pretty container on the pretty saucer. My thinking is that you would be able to lift the grow pot out of the ornamental container to add water to the rocks and then replace the grow pot on top. Would that work or is it necessary to have the rocks complete outside the pot? Thanks.
Great question! I put rocks in a saucer for a couple different purposes. 1. It helps with humidity because the water evaporates off of the rocks. Especially since here in the Midwest we have dry winters, I have all my plants in saucers with rocks. 2. Drainage. I don't put the rocks in the bottom of the pot because it can create a perched water table (there's a great video by Betsy Begonia where she explains in detail what happens). Also when there are rocks in the bottom the amount of soil is reduced which can limit the root system. 3. Since I use wicks in my violets, the rocks create sort of water reservoir that the wick can pull water from without the pot completely sitting in the water and saturating the bottom of the pot. If the roots sit in water they don't get oxygen which can cause the roots to die or rot. I would say that if you wanted to have a cleaner look definitely place the rocks in the bottom of pot and then set another pot inside of it. That way you can see if the plant is sitting in water or not and it will be easy to drain excess if necessary. I hope this helped! Let me know if you have any further questions! Happy Growing!
Just cut the bottom of the roots off and it wil recover quicker with a good half of the root ball, so you need to learn more about taking care of a long neck on a violet.
i been growing violets for 45 years, and i never never touch my leaves, unless i have too for repotting reasons, they hate being touched, that i have learned

If the leaves are at the bottom of the plant and they are mushy, they are generally just old leaves that can be removed. If all the leaves on the plant are soft and curled then it may have been over or under watered at some point. Make sure you have good drainage in the pot (holes in the bottom of the pot) and I highly recommend setting up your violets with water wicking So they can be bottom watered and only take up the water that they need. I plan on making a video on how to set that up soon! I hope this helps!
Thank you so much i learbed so much lol. I bought my violets in shoprite and they started to wilt just after three days. When i looked at tye siil it def looked over watered. Now i know how to repot them and water tyem the correct way. The leaves are fine but the flowers are wilted do I just pick them off?

I'm so sorry I missed this comment! Violets are hardier than they look! I would suggest placing it into a smaller pot (violet like to be a little root bound and I see too many in too large of pots that kill them off) with some new soil and a wick. Then water it 2 twice a week until the roots build up again and you get new leaves. I hope this helps! Happy growing!

Great question! I don't because I have humidity trays I place them on (cookie sheet with pebbles that I keep damp on top of a heat mat) but if you have low humidity I would recommend that you do bag them. It won't hurt them anyway. 😊
@@MossyKT Ooh, that is something to think about because it is very humid where I live. If I cover a plant, they tend to mildew, mold, and rot. I can sit plants out in my covered back porch in the Spring and Summer and there is so much humidity that they will sometimes get mold or mildew growing on them, especially the poor orchids. So, I have to keep a close eye on that.
I've had some luck with a 1:1 hydrogen peroxide: water soil drench but if they are really bad I also use diatomaceous earth. I sprinkle some on the soil surface and scratch it in a few centimeters so any larvae in the soil come in contact with it. Also I make traps with apple cider vinegar, dish soap and water too. I hope that helps!

If you are looking for specific varieties I highly recommend The Violet Barn! Google them and admire so many gorgeous plants! :)
