My great-grandmother had glass shelves lined with African violets mounted in front of her dining room windows. Absolutely stunning display. She passed away in 1974, and my mind can still picture her beautiful flowers. Thank you bringing to mind a precious memory from my early years.
My grandmother did the same, glass shelving in her dining room windows for her violets in NJ. I remember my grandfather building them for her. I struggle with them so much here in Southeast FL. Cannot get the lighting right and don't really want to use grow lights. My 85 year aunt has off springs of granny's violets and also her Christmas cactus.
Oh my goodness! My sister has my great-grandmother’s Christmas cactus. What a coincidence! We estimate the cactus is about 75 years old or so. I have a cutting from it and so do many cousins as my sister and my mother before her are very generous to share. I love knowing other families keep gardening traditions alive through the generations. Thank you for sharing 😊
That sounds like a lovely picture. I wish I could find some of those glass shelves for mine. I used to see them a lot when I was a kid but these days I don’t.
Over 50 years ago dad had an African violet collection and he didn't want anyone to mess with it, he took care of them and they were gorgeous. Once we moved to US he never picked up that hobby again 😮💨, I miss him. I will have to get a collection to remind me of him ❤ Blessings 🙏🏻💞
What a sweet memory for me. My mom always had beautiful African Violets in the kitchen. She would dissolves an aspirin in the water she used to give them a drink, which makes me wonder if they prefer an acidic soil? At any rate, you’ve inspired me to try my hand at growing some. Thank you for the clear and thorough lesson in growing African Violets.
My grandmother gave me my first African violet pot when I was 12, and now, 50+ years later, I still have at least 8 plants growing on my patio! I love propagating them and giving the plants as gifts to friends and family. Thanks, Laura, for reviewing repotting and showcasing such a special plant!
I love African violets and these are beautiful. Just stunning. I used to have lots of violets and grew them under grow lights. Unfortunately, life happened and I didn't have time and now I really miss them. Watching this has made me decide to go out and buy a few nice ones and start again. Thanks for the inspiration. Have a blessed day everyone.
Dear Laura, I have been watching your videos for the last three years every day. I am currently working to complete my doctorate of educational leadership, and your videos have been a calm respite in all of my readings about how much teachers know about phonics and how effective they feel as teachers. I want you to know that this video was perfect for me, as I finished the last chapter of my dissertation and submitted it last night. I went to my local grocery store and bought a new African Violet to celebrate. It has purple flowers and a white throat. This video today could not have been more perfect. Thank you for all you do every day, Best wishes to you and your family-- Love, Jess
🌸Good day Laura and Friends. I am so thankful for this demo on violets! My grandmother always had one on the chest in the living room, and was always giving me a cutting, but I always killed it!! Now in my apartment, I’ve learned thru the ages how to keep them, collect them, and love them just like my Grandma wanted! I’m in an apartment so they are perfect for me. If one dies, I propagate or buy another. Enjoy a beautiful day everyone, 💜🌞
I’m a big African Violet fan. They’re such a low maintenance plant if you meet their basic needs. I picked up a tiny one at my garden center last summer that had been neglected and was really struggling. The garden center discounted the price because of its condition. I came home, repotted it and gave it a little talc. Today it’s a glorious plant and makes me smile every time I look at it.
Repotting my violets is on my to do list. Thank you for the timely video. African violets are, hands down, my favorite house plant. My grandmother always had a plant holder, similar to yours, full of violets when I was a kid. I know that’s when my love for these gorgeous plants started.
For some reason same here…first the blooms go and then the rest of the plant. I don’t know what I am doing wrong but I keep killing mine for some reason…I feel like they are more fussy than other house plants. I hope I am wrong and it’s something simple that I need to do differently.
I love African Violets! Have kept my first one alive and thriving for over 6 months now. Nervous to repot and even more nervous to separate the new growth. This video helped!
They can go a long time between repotting. Like Laura said, as long as they have healthy looking leaves, no need to repot. Even if they take a break from blooming once in a while.
Laura you have such beautiful hands ~also because I love Africa and get to travel there as often as possible African violets grow at the entrance of caves✨
Thank you. I have my mom's African violet. Rooted a few leaves and have 2 that have not bloomed . Still grown in same light and watering . One older one blooms all the time. Enjoying the information you give.
The baby African Violets are so precious. I have 3 or 4 pictures of them just after they popped their little leaves through the soil. I posted them on FB that got a lot of likes. 😊
Here in Finland, the flower/plant in question is called Saintpaulia, the name comes from Saint Paul according to legend, more than 100 years ago, a German baron found saintpaulia in the forest and sent seedlings home to Germany. Since then, the saintpaulia has been one of the most popular flowering houseplants in Europe.
Hello …. Love from Australia! So funny when listening to you about where to place the pots to avoid the direct suns rays ! Here in the southern hemisphere it’s different … here in winter our sun rises in the north east and sets in the north west and in summer it’s more directly east to west … our south facing windows rarely get direct sunlight. You have clarified quite a few care issues I’ve had …. So I’m hoping for even greater success with my violets …. One of my all time favourite flowers!!!!
Love these potting days. My grandmother taught me how to grow and care for these when I was very young. I thought she was the coolest person ever, I was right. Miss her dearly!! 💕
My daughter has done so much violet propagation over the years. She’s given away dozens! It’s an interesting process and also interesting that all of hers have come from 2 original plants, and the results have been multiple different colors of flowers.
Thanks for this. My Mom is now in Long Term Care and we are trying to make her room as homey as possible. She grew beautiful violets in her home so we are going to take her out to get some African Violets and new pots for her room. Thanks for the inspiration.❤
That’s a wonderful idea! When we had to move my mom to assisted living several years ago, it really helped that we made sure she had plants to care for in her room. I eventually had to switch most out for faux plants because she couldn’t remember if she had watered and would water again and again, and the poor things couldn’t take it. But, before two massive strokes, she had the loveliest and healthiest plant collection. I know I get my love of plants from her and my Mamaw, both of whom taught me about them growing up. 🥰
Oh goodness, those flowers are beautiful!! My dad propagated them and our windowsills were always lined with beautiful purples, blues and pinks. A lovely memory! Thanks for the reminder.
you just have such a golden touch on everything!!! now i am off to home depot for African violets , correct soil and fertilizer!!! my hubs thanks you lol
Those are the prettiest violets I have seen. Especially that kind of variegated one. And the one that you mentioned like a blue. It almost doesn't look real kinda. With it being sooooo vibrant. That is stunning. Sooo crazy how they propagate with putting that in just the soil. Totally doing that. I will be at the nursery on Friday the 29th. I'm sooo excited. I think I'm gonna go crazy. I will tell miss Susan I'm buying up the plants. Guess your gonna have to come over here to Idaho Falls Laura n Aaron to get anything. Hahaha😂😂😂 just kiddin... See you in the next one. Sooo exciting....💜💜💙💙🌿🌿🪴🪴☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️
When my kitty,12-13 y/o, was a baby, she loved to sleep in my African violet. Still miss that pretty plant. Seeing you repotting yours has me itching to go find some. Yours are beautiful. It would be a fun weekend trip over the mountain to come visit your parent's store🤗
I absolutely love African Violets💜 Every year I plan to pot up African Violets as Mother’s Day gifts but never follow through. I’ll try again this year.💜💜💜
Perfect timing..... I love African violets, my Mother-in-law had them all through her home. I just picked up a baby plant a year or two ago, repotted it once and now there are 3 plants. It's been constantly blooming. A little concerned about separating them. I'll check your other video out too. You're such a terrific teacher. God bless.
My mom always had a beautiful African violet in a chrystal bowl in the window of her living room (on a little table between two chairs). I've followed her example and always have one somewhere in my house. The little chrystal bowls can be found quite inexpensively at Marshalls and Home Goods, and we line the bowl with the reindeer moss and just sit the pot right down in it, hiding the sides. SO easy.
I have always had the best luck with African violet pots (the pot in a pot) and fertilize with a liquid fertilizer in the water - bottom pot. I have almost continuous flowering. I could never keep my violets watered enough in terracotta. They sure do bring a bright spot to my kitchen window in the dead of winter!
Such beautiful plants! I learned so much today about African Violets - no wonder I haven't done very well with these plants, I didn't know what I was doing. I'll give them a try again. Thanks Laura. African violets, crocus and primroses remind of Spring.
❤ my mom grew African violets. She taught me about the No water on the leaves. She used to take out new center leave with the point of a pencil. Not sure if that’s right but It always seemed to encourage new blooms. I had no idea I could make new ones from the leaves! ❤ thanks for that tip.
My Great Aunt used to grow beautiful violets !! A sweet memory of her ! Very informative video! I may try to grow them one day !! From Georgia with love ❤️
Watch out y'all !! I just got one of those " telegram me " messages that Laura & Aaron said was some sort of scam !! It even had Laura's pic on it !! 😳😤 I reported it as Spam! Leave us Garden Answer fans alone !! 🤬
I have only five violets at present, space is an issue. I never pot them in terra cotta (unless glazed) because I've have many bottom leaves die off from the course texture of the pots. For me, the plants are very temperamental about their pots. Side note: my grandma used sheep droppings soaked in water for plant food and she was such a successful violet mom🥰
Your comment reminded me of my Mamaw collecting droppings from my pet rabbit to make “tea” for her plants. Back then, I probably thought she was a little loony, but thankfully her wisdom stuck in my mind. I have so many plants these days that I’m going to have to build an addition if I keep propagating and purchasing “rescues”. 😁
Oh, I love it!!! I feel it's my duty to rescue African violets. Can't stand to see them dried up and dying on store tables. As to space, my grandma had a stand, shaped sort of like a Christmas tree, but 5 shelves that could spin, largest at the bottom and progressively getting smaller until it topped off with a stationary one that held only one violet. It's kinda hard to describe, but it was so neat. My brother has it~wish I did tho, alas. @@jodilea144
❤Thank you for all the teaching you do!!❤ FYI, I’ve had two African violets that have lived on the edge of my garden tub/shower for about twenty years. They get wet daily from the shower and sometimes even held under the direct spray if I accidentally drop a gob suds on them… while I’m lucky I don’t have hard water, they have never gotten water spots. Rarely do the leaves ‘melt’ due to water, but I occasionally need to pinch of an old leaf or two from the bottom. They get bright light, but never direct sun. (I started this when I saw African violets growing in a rain forest next to a waterfall thriving in the mist.)
I LOVE propagating African Violets. They were my mom’s favorite plant. She had such beautiful ones. I still have the babies from her plants and make more every few months. I am so impressed with the price you got! I’ll have to check out my local Nursery and see if I can get some lucky. Thanks for sharing your knowledge of them! They have become one of my favorite house plants too. ❤
Mom grew them. I used to help her water them. She used butter bowls, yarn, and the bottoms of the 2 liter soda bottles (they used to have black covers on the bottoms that worked perfectly for passing the yarn through. she would fill the bowls with that food and put the plant potted in the black recycled container with the yarn hanging out of the holes in that black container. This yarn was what fed the water to the plant as it needed it. I don’t know why she stopped growing them. But I enjoyed opening those butter bowls and pouring the water with the fertilizer. A great memory we share.
Ohhhh I love this. So much Spring in a small space. I really appreciate you doing and sharing this video. I often forget the lighting requirements for African violets.
Love the colours of these! I gave away all my African Violets when I moved a few years ago, but this is making me want to get another one - propagating them is so much fun!
My Mom had one. It's mine now. I knew it needed repotting but didn't know for sure how, now I do. That one African Violet had become 2 and for sure needs to be repotted.
Thank you for this video! I love African Violets but never had any luck with them. Mainly because I really didn’t know how to care for them. Maybe the one that I currently have will have a better chance of survival now! ❤
I’m so glad you’re doing a video on African violets. For my now daughter in laws bridal shower last year I had African violets in all different colors at each guest table setting and I hand painted little tiny ceramic pots white. They looked so pretty and everyone loved them! I buy them whenever I see them but I never can keep them alive! I’m sure your video will help! 😉
I live in an apartment with east facing windows (under an overhang) so I haven't really had enough light to grow much indoors, but I just bought a grow light shelving system so now I'm thinking about treating myself to a few houseplants. One of those pretty coloured violets would be so pleasing.
Really good video. I knew nothing about African violets and never even thought about growing them because everyone says they are so difficult. However with what you just taught, I think I might have the perfect place for them. Think I’ll get a couple for my art studio. Excited.
Beautiful project! Nice memories of caring for my mom's African violets! 😍 When we'd get water on the leaves, we gently dabbed it off with a paper towel.
I love African violets . I don’t have luck with them at all , I don’t know why . I am going to try again though because seeing you repot them made me want a few , lol❤🌸
I have an African violet in my office and it's doing wonderfully but I need to repot it because it is VERY crowded (in it's original plastic inside another plastic). I've had mine for almost three years and it's doing great, but I have always watered it to the line on the outside plastic container and it does "sit" in the water all week. I water every Monday and it's dry each Monday, so I fill to the line again. Today (Monday) I let it soak for about 4 hours (not knowing any better) and I emptied whatever water remained. I plan to take this home on Friday so I can repot it. Also, looking closely at it, it looks like at least 3 different plants, so I will have THREE African violets this weekend! Yayyy! Thank you for the helpful video!
Perfect timing!! I just bought two beautiful African violets and will be potting them up. My mother loved growing them, so they evoke special memories. Thank you for the very informative tutorial!
Beautiful violets. You may find that the clay pots are a bit harder to control an even moisture level. I find that violets have shallow roots and don’t like to dry out or be waterlogged. Bottom watering and Keeping a bit of water in the saucers when they are in larger pots might actually be helpful.
African violets are very nostalgic. I also bought them without having a clue how to care for them. And just watch them whether and die. So I'm so happy every time you cover their care. I remember when you made the video of propagation the leaves. It's wonderful to see them now. What is the plant that you have on the ledge above this display of violets?
Perfect! I have one African violet plant and was thinking it needed to be repotted. But I have no knowledge of how to care for it, so thank you Laura for this video. And I see your store has the food and mix, so I will get that too. Now that I know how to propagate them, here we go!
The African Violets are lovely and plant stand is perfect! They were my Moms favorite house plants. She also propagated them by pinching a leaf. Terrific memories you have brought to my mind this morning. Thank you!💕
Those African Violets are so pretty. They look so pretty all together like you have them. Unfortunately, I have had them before but I always end up killing them.
This video came at a great time, Laura! It inspired me to repot a couple of mini violets that I just purchased. In fact, I paused the video to accomplish that project! ❤ Thank you!
I have a cutting from it and so do many cousins as my sister and my mother before her are very generous to share. I love knowing other families keep gardening traditions alive through the generations. Thank you for sharing 😊
African violets remind me of my grandmother as well. 🥰
My grandmother did the same. Hers did beautifully in a ears window, I’m inspired to grow some as well. Thank you Laura
My mom grew pretty African violets too. Nice memory for me as well.
Mine too ❤❤❤
My memories are with my grandmother, although my mother also had a green thumb.
Slightly acidic...too acidic and they won't bloom because the roots can't pull in the nutrients in the soil...stunts them.
Thanks for that comment. My mother loved them too. She always had them growing on her dresser.
My grandmother gave me my first African violet pot when I was 12, and now, 50+ years later, I still have at least 8 plants growing on my patio! I love propagating them and giving the plants as gifts to friends and family. Thanks, Laura, for reviewing repotting and showcasing such a special plant!
I have two African violets that have bloomed non stop for 4 years now. Love them!
I love African violets and these are beautiful. Just stunning. I used to have lots of violets and grew them under grow lights. And a blessed day to you as well!
I'm curious. Did you get yourself an African Violet?
African violets always make me remember my late Mom. She always grew tons and put them on the window sills. Would propagate and give away tons too.❤
Wow! 💜 You just gave me a newfound appreciation for African Violets. I thought they were too fussy. Not anymore! 💜

Thanks for showing that one Violet that you had rooted from a leaf and how it grew from the new plant! Very interesting!❤❤❤
These violets were just perfection! And on that stand! Lovely❤❤❤
Well how many of us are on the hunt for African violets now? I used to grow beautiful ones but it’s been years. Thanks Laura for always inspiring us❤.

I’ve never had good luck with African Violets, but I didn’t know about the number of light hours and dark hours. Yours are beautiful! 🌸
Try the pot in a pot - called violet pots. Fertilize with liquid food in the water. Continuous blooms!

I followed your last video on propagating African Violets and now I have 4 beautiful little plants. Thank you for such wonderful instructional videos.

Those tiny pots are the cutest thing ever.
The violets are so pretty especially placed on the vintage plant stand and against the brick.

Thanks Laura. I love African violets ! Especially the variegated ones. 🪻💚🙃
Perfect timing! I just bought an African Violet. I was debating the pot. Thanks!
I just bought a new violet. These are so lovely.
I’m in love with your pots. ❤
Thankyou Laura! I have never seen that about how to propagate African Violets before. I can't wait to try it!
Perfect timing of this video… I have to African violets that are needing some love and I don’t have much experience what to do… Thank you!
African violets ❤my favorite 💫
My Nana use to have them in her veranda. There adorable. Thanks again for sharing this with us.🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
I successfully transplanted mine to leca & they are thriving 💕
The African violets are beautiful, i love that blue its gorgeous. They look so good in the terracotta pots
Love the colours of these! I gave away all my African Violets when I moved a few years ago, but this is making me want to get another one - propagating them is so much fun!
My Mom had one. It's mine now. I knew it needed repotting but didn't know for sure how, now I do. That one African Violet had become 2 and for sure needs to be repotted.
the Violets are SO beautiful and your repotting technique is terrific....well done Laura !
African Violets and English Ivy are my FAVORITE indoor plants! These you potted up today are SO lovely. 😊
Thank you for this video! I love African Violets but never had any luck with them. Mainly because I really didn’t know how to care for them. Maybe the one that I currently have will have a better chance of survival now! ❤
The African violets always die on me , now I want to try again with all that I learned from your video today, thx Laura.
Loved today’s lesson! Now I know why I have failed to grow african violets.
Excited.
Makes me try my hand at violets again the first try I didn't know as much information..thanks Laura ❤
Beautiful project! Nice memories of caring for my mom's African violets! 😍 When we'd get water on the leaves, we gently dabbed it off with a paper towel.
So sweet, my mom loved African violets but I have never tried to grow them! May have to try them ❤
I love African violets .
Beautiful display! Like others here, my grandmother had African violets. Such sweet memories it brings back. Thank you!
That was perfect timing. I am getting ready to up pot my African violet. Thank you Laura!
I have heard an east window is the best and mine love my east.
Beautiful...my mom always grew African violets ❤PS I love the iron plant stand, so nice!
You did a marvelous job!!!
This video came at a great time, Laura! It inspired me to repot a couple of mini violets that I just purchased. In fact, I paused the video to accomplish that project! ❤ Thank you!
Beautiful. I love African Violets💜💜💜
