I have a Vermont Castings from the 70's. It is in the very center of my house on the 1st floor. Using only the blower from our central AC to circulate the air, we are able to heat 4400 square feet all night long - by filling the stove all the way to the top! I don't even yell at my kids to keep the door closed, because I know this thing will reheat the space in no time. This is a great video to show people the simple way to heat a home without spending money.

Best wood burning video here. I've seen about 20 of them. This one is good for a beginner like me.

@ehardin88 You can and do fill a Vermont Castings all the way when you set the flue into the position where it recirculates the burned gases. It burns at a lower temp and lasts all night. The iron things are andirons. The word escaped me and I didn't feel like doing it over since it was a quick video intended for a specific person who was going to be using my cabin and wanted instructions on how to use the stove. I am amazed at the people who had the free time to gripe about that word!

I am considering buying a Resolute for my cabin and am used to the controls for a Jotul 8, which I have in my home. This video is very informative, thanks for making it.

Some good info. We have a resolute 1979 works great! We have the screen for the front but when we use it just for ambience, we get so much smoke smell. Is there a trick to use that without the smoke?

usually this is a lack of draw of air up the chimney. This is usually because the air going up the chimney isn't dramatically hotter than that outside (what causes the air to rise up the chimney. Try to get the fire nice and hot first with the doors closed... a good hour or so.... then open it up. As long as it close to freezing outside, it should draw nicely.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, trouble posting. This Vermont Castings stove has a double wall with a space inside. When you close the damper hot wood gases are recirculated inside the space and reburned for more efficient burning and cleaner air. There is a separate vent that lets air in.

Thx for the video; at 4:11 you mention closing the damper hamper "all the way" when stove reaches working temperature - I thought "all the way" was for when the stove is off, and turn it "less than all the way" was for when stove reached working temp? Can you pls confirm. Thx in advance.

all night if you set the controls right so it doesn't burn too fast

I am curious to know, if you do fill the stove up, how long will it put out heat at a comfortable level?
