  • This is what I learned over many years with this stove (Vermont Castings) in South Texas, burning only dense well-seasoned oak from my own trees. The operation would be different when burning soft woods such as pine, as these contain resins and other volatiles which can be ignited in the secondary burn chamber for maximum efficiency. The oak I use WILL NOT support secondary combustion, as I have confirmed using temperature probes, direct visualization and even air injection. Pine, cedar and other soft woods will support a secondary burn, but those woods burn up faster than oak so you have to reload more often.
