Thank you. Such a clear beautiful presentation. I am going to look at a walking wheel, and I feel confident that I will know if it is fully & correctly functioning after seeing your video. Perhaps I will soon be watching your video again as I try my hand at spinning on my new great wheel. ☺️
I love spinning on mine and hope you will too. Just remember getting it all set up perfect is the hard part But once you get it .... it is so much fun
Thank you
you are welcome. I hope it helps
GREAT VIDEO LOVED HOW YOU KEEP IT SIMPLE NOT GET ALL SUPER TECHNICAL JUST WHAT MAJOR PARTS ARE AND EASY TO DIGEST FOR NEWBIES THANK YOU SO MUCH BEST VIDEO OUT THERE :)
Thank you so much for keeping it simple! I probably watched 30 videos last night to learn about my wheel. I've had it for 10 years as a decoration and never used it. Last summer I bought sheep and decided I want to spin my own yarn. Most of the videos only show you how to feed the roving onto the spindle. They didn't teach how to set the wheel up to start. My wheel isn't exactly like yours, but it was close enough that I was able to put on the drive band and work with the tension. Thank you so much for sharing.
You are more then welcome ... People like you are why we do what we do ... I had to learn it all myself and wanted to make sure that no one had to go through what I did when I started ... I love keeping it simple
Do you have any advice on how to keep the maidens from coming off of the mother of all? If I loosen the tension then my spindle doesn't turn. If I tighten it, the piece that holds the maidens and the spindle comes out of its socket.
@@tammym3753 First check to see if the Mother of all is secured properly. Sometimes they used something like a wedge or nail or peg on the underside to hold it in place so it won't come out of the socket. Second when you adjust it is really little adjustments so don't over adjust. Can you send me pictures of the Socket, mother of all and tension on your wheel ... most are different so I might be able to get a better idea how to help if I can see it. farmontheprairie@gmail.com
Wow that is so cool my daughter in law wants to have one and learn how to make yarn thank you for sharing have a great day
If you are ever in Oklahoma come on by and we can "play" ... I drop spindle, single treadle, double treadle and my walking wheel... LOL Hello my Name is Christy and I am addicted!!
a spinning wheel is on my someday list :-) I can spin with a drop spindle and have had the opportunity to use a spinning wheel. Thank you for sharing
Come on by sometime and we can play!! I have all kinds of things to make yarn
Straw Family Farm If I ever make it down that way and have an hour or so to spare i will most definitely look you up. It’s not that far 😊
I know ... and oh the fun we would have ... LOL
What beginners do not seem to understand is that you cannot draft twisted fibers. Unlike a treadle wheel, you do not have to keep the wheel turning at a near constant speed. Twisting of the fiber is controlled by the rate at which you spin the wheel. Fortunately this can be instantly and rather precisely controlled with your right hand. The SECRET is to keep drafting just ahead of the twisting. It is possible to produce four or five feet of yarn in just 10 or 15 seconds but don't get hung up on time here. Pinch the yarn and give the wheel a once around to put the final twist in the yarn before winding on. Rolag size is only important if a specific size of yarn is necessary. A very fine yard is much easier to spin if you start with a smaller size rolag. Clean, loose carded , short staple wool is best for learning on. Spinners will see that they are drafting from one side of the rolag and try to twist and turn their left hand to correct this. The solution is simply to turn the rolag over (180 degrees) and this will correct itself. I have been doing this since 1980 and have had so many people tell me that they cannot learn the Walking Wheel. I don't think I have needed more than twenty minutes to teach anyone the technique.
Thank you for your input but this video wasn't intended to be very technical ... I just want them to get spinning and if they try it they will learn all the ins and outs but I just wanted to cover the basics.
That wheel sounds angry.
Wait. Duh. Those holes are for the straps and not the spindle itself? Does that help with the tension?
Flea Christenson it has nothing to do with the tension .... Tension is the tightness of the drive band
My spindle goes through holes in the wooden post. No straps needed, right?
Flea Christenson those wholes are for the straps not the spindle
So I have a great wheel that looks pretty much the same as this but I’m not sure if yours has a ridge around the wheel to hold your drive band mine definitely does not and I’m having issues with the band staying on the wheel any suggestions?
My wheel don't have a groove either ... this issue is cause by the alignment of the wheel and the Mother of all. This is the one thing that each wheel varies on so all I can suggest is to stand behind the wheel and look towards the mother of all and make sure it is in the straightest line you can
