I said I would go first and leave a comment about my favorite yarn to spin and my favorite wheel to spin it on, but I can decide! It's like trying to choose my favorite child! 😜
Haven't mastered any of mine, yet but I think it'll be a tie between my flax wheel and my walking wheel. 😁 My favorite to spin? My Navajo Churro wool. 😊 ps, watching this via someone else's channel, I'll be looking forward to seeing more videos soon! 😊 🤗 Eye of the Beholder
Ok, I just found this channel today and I am going to say that it is by far the BEST instructional channel for spinning I have come across. I have only been spinning for a year and a half and already want to go fast on a double drive wheel. This makes the new “to me” drive system COMPLETELY understandable. Thank you for taking the time to teach. You are so easy to listen to and you know just what you are talking about. Much appreciation!!
Thank you. When people are enthusiastic it tends to reduce clarity of explanation. You have managed to retain both enthusiasm and clarity and the result is very helpful. Best wishes from the UK!
I just bought an antique double drive (flax wheel) at a thrift store today, so this is very helpful! Prior to this I have only used a drop spindle. My favorite yarns to spin are goat and llama fibers. I get it for free at work (I work at a zoo), and I love getting to spin fiber from animals I know personally!
At the risk of repeating what others have said, you are a gifted teacher. I just found your channel, have subscribed . I have searched everywhere for this information explained so clearly. Thank you so very much, Jane
Thank you for helping us figure out what was wrong with the double drive wheel I had rescued. Yours was the first super clear explanation of what to look for that I found.
I've had a Columbine wheel sitting in a corner since I fell on it (tripped over the dog) and warped the frame. I decided I want to fix it and use it again...and since the original drive band is gone (who knows where, not me) I couldn't remember how to put a new band on it. Your very clear explanation of how a double-drive system is set up and works has given me the drive (pun intended) to make a new band and hope against hope I can get my Columbine back in use. (By the way, I learned to spin on a Turkish drop spindle from Louise Green of Greentree Ranch in 1973. I bought my first Columbine wheel in 1974, but in a period of prolonged insanity, sold it. The wheel I'm trying to fix was purchased in 2006 when I turned 59 1/2 and could pull off of my IRA without penalty. I've been using my spindle and an Ashford Kiwi for the last few years...I'm almost 76 and am determined to fix my Columbine!!)
Just inherited(saved from the dumpster) an antique double drive wheel that originally belonged to my husband's great great grandmother and was just nearing frustrated that none of the tutorials I could find actually explained how to set up the drive band and how to change the bobbins. This one had to be reverse-unscrewed, and I've been too scared to use force to get it apart, so it was a relief when it just. Unscrewed easily when turned the right way, as you showed. So thank you! ❤️
This is the double drive tutorial that needed to be out into the universe. Because it is a bit if a different animal, it often gets left out. Thank you so much!!
Just what I needed. I brought home a Matchless that was already set up in double drive. I’m an experienced spinner but new to DD. Was feeling a bit defeated by this very different method. I learned pretty much everything I needed to know to get spinning and making nice yarn. I found it tricky to finesse the take up when doing long draw. It seems like keeping a bit of tension on the yarn during take up keeps the yarn from developing pigtails. Thanks for posting this. 😍🥰❤️
You explained the ingenious and ancient subtleties of the double drive wheel beautifully. Imagine a modern spinning machine with variable speed bobbin and flyer servo motors and an optical system to watch the fibers twisting. It would need software, a computer, and months of programming. The old spinning wheel and a skilled operator however, produced consistent, even yarn hundreds of years ago. Today I inherited an old double drive spinning wheel which was made in Saskatchewan. It needs work and the whorl turns oposite from normal because it sits on right hand threads, but it's going to be a great wheel.
I've been spinning about 5/6 years. I've taken in person spinning classes, and watched hours and hours of videos and hands down yours is the best. You've explained the "why's" whereas a lot of teachers focus on the mechanics. Thanks so much!
THANK YOU. I have had my wheel for 6 months and this is the first time i have managed to set up double drive. very grateful. i like spinning . its addictive and soothing.
Wow!!! Where was this video when I first started 9 years ago?!? Thank you so much! I’m going to be starting all over with learning to spin. So excited I won’t have hands cramping up again...
I recently got a Schact Matchless and have been learning to use it. I emailed a teacher to show her what i had been producing and she suggested changing my ratio and increasing the speed of my bobbin. my immediate thought was that i knew what all of that meant because you had explained all of those things to me and more. Thank you for your tutorial videos. As i continue learning, I imagine i'll be spending a lot of time watching them :)
Fun story, I was shopping a thrift store, and I found a complete spinning wheel (less the band). This video was quite helpful in reminding me how to route the power band. Thank You 😊 Subscribed
I want to make sure I leave a comment because I watch your videos from my ROKU tv and it doesn't give me the option to comment so while I'm on my phone... THANK YOU! This was the most helpful video about the double drive I have found. The tension instructions was the best I have seen! I have watched many of your videos and have learned something from each and every one of them. You are a wonderful teacher and I'm so glad I found you!
You are such a good teacher! I have to prepare a demonstration and the spinning wheel doesn’t have the band… I feel ready to make it work with all your explanations. I really love the way you go into the science of it. It makes me fully understand… and your smile, love it! Merci!
Hi. I was gifted a double drive spinning wheel from an op shop for Christmas. I’ve been searching for a video to show me how to set it up and yours is perfect as it explains EVERYTHING. I was having to go across multiple videos to gather all the information I required. Yours sums it all up in one. Thank you so much.
Thank you! Generally someone who knows about spinning wheels doesn't know much about youtube. But alas! Here you are! Melding the two!!!! Thank you, this is what I've been searching for. I'll be purusing your other videos for sure.
AH! I'm only halfway through this video and it has been so helpful. My husband bought a spinning wheel for me, because we have Pygora goats and now we need to do something with all the hair! I don't know anything about spinning wheels, and I just love that you're giving a spinning wheel anatomy and physiology lesson! (And yes, my spinning wheel is a double drive). Weirdly, my parents also bought me a spinning wheel that I have to assemble, which I think is single drive, so I'll have to watch that tutorial some day too!
A CPW just came home with me. After cleaning her up, I tried spinning with her and am having difficulty with her uptake. Thank you for your video. I know with time, we will become best friends. It's time to go make adjustments on the driveband. ~ Karen
Thank you , thank you, thank you! Between this video, and your video on SWSO, I have managed to get my spinning wheel functioning! All the parts were there, someone had just painted over them, so everything that should move, was stuck together, and if it shouldn't move, it was loose and flying around! Between your two videos I have everything working great now! Just finished adjusting the tension so that the bobbin takes up the fiber neatly. It is a castle wheel, double drive, so a little different, but your videos have helped turn it from a (nicely painted) decoration into a functioning wheel! (BTW I got it for $20 or else it was going to become kindling for a fire! A couple hours of labor and it works like a charm!)
This is such a God send. I have been really confused at times. Especially on the bobbin assembly, whorls, and mother of all. I keep watching it all agog. (All giggles and stomping feet.) I have only been looking for some answers all year.
thank you so much for the video. i have just bought a new to me double drive dryad wheel and had no idea how to tension it, watched your video and had a play with it, works a dream.
This is the best video I have seen on tension and how the yarn winds on. I use a Schacht Matchless in DD for singles and a Ladybug in scotch tension for plying.
Your are a great teacher…. I just took my first spinning class yesterday, and my teacher recommended your tutorials. I’m definitely subscribing. Thank you and be well!
Thank you so much!!! I was desperately trying to get the whorl off to change the bobbin, and it just wouldn't budge - I never would have thought to unscrew it the "wrong" way if I hadn't watched this!!
This video was JUST what I needed! I found a used spinning wheel and it turns out it's a double drive! Everything in this video is helping me get it set up and start spinning. My first ever spinning wheel! Thank you!
Thank youso much for explaining the double drive. I am absolutely new to spinning and bought a double drive. The drive band fell off and at first I didn't realize it was one band! Now I need to check if I got it back on correctly.
Fantastic video, thank you. Gives me all the information I need. My son gave me an old hand-made double drive spinning wheel which he had renovated for me, for Christmas. It is over 50 years old. Wow, I was speechless! I am a knitter and spun on a single drive when I was in my teens over 40 years ago. I have now altered the wheel thanks to your instruction and it is working as it should. I am now inspired and motivated. You know what I'll be doing for the rest of the day!!
You just saved my mind. Aaaaaah. Thank you. I have an Ashford Traditional and I was trying to apply single drive to it. Ha. Thank you for this video, you are a lifesaver.
Super helpful. Really appreciate the warnings about tight and loose tensions. You've set this beginner up for a good intro to her first spinning wheel!
Fabulous video!! I love how you explain in a simple and detailed manner. Thank you for an enjoyable and educational explanation of the double drive system! I'll be sharing this video with my spinning friends.
Hiya! Just what I needed! I bought an antique spinning wheel like the one you showed. I cannot get it to work, but now I found out it's because it has to go double 😊 Thank you so much. I'll try right away... though I would have loved to actually SEE you put on the cotton band❤ You are great🤗
I played around with my wheel last night and had issues with the tension. I am going to clean the wheel up today and play with the tension more. Thank you for another great video!
I have inherited a Haldane Lewis mk2 with (what I know know is) a double drive set up and no clue as to how to put it together. This was very helpful! Thanks!
I recently found a beautiful kromski mazurka on offerup. I abandoned double drive almost immediately and converted it to the single drive. This is what I needed! And as a new spinner understanding the details of tensioning this type of wheel is so incredibly helpful!
I've been spinning on my Ashford Traditional since 1968. I'm ordering a Kromski Traveler and have never seen, let alone use, a double drive wheel. Your video is sooo informational, I love it! You have a new subscriber.
Brilliant! Thank you for your crystal clear explanations. I just acquired a CPW and this is my first time spinning on a double drive wheel. This video is so helpful!
You are SUCH a good teacher! I just bought a vintage (not quite antique) double-drive spinning wheel, and you've explained it's workings so clearly. Thank you!
Evie, your explanations are THE BEST! I have a double drive wheel (castle-style) and now I understand how/why it pulls! I’m learning the long draw and it is so cool how as soon as you let it, it just pulls it on! Thank you so much!! :) - Teresa
This was so helpful!!! I was just gifted a Clemes & Clemes Modern wheel, and you helped me unravel the mystery of the double-drive! You're an excellent teacher, Evie, and I'm grateful for your work.
I like it! I am a beginner with a Majacraft rose . Everything is new to me. The thing that you said on the end of the video, that the yarn is beginnen to twist on the bobbin, it happend to me but with your advice I am back on trail. Thanks!!
I just got my first spinning wheel! A Country Craftsman double drive wheel. I've hardly touched a spinning wheel before this, so I have a lot to learn and get used to.
Thank you for such a clear description of the workings of the wheel. I have not used my double drive wheel for years but plan to start again. I also recently bought a beautiful Ashford single drive wheel for only $50 on market place. Just because I wanted to 'save' it. lol they are beautiful things.
I just got a double-drive wheel and am totally new to spinning. This tutorial (and some of your others) has eased my way to understanding my new wheel and letting me feel like I can do this!
Thank you so much for your videos. I am a new spinner, bought a used wheel which turned out to be an Ashland Elizabeth 2. I have been hunting information on setting it up for hours. You explain your information clearly. I think you are going to be my go to person on this adventure.
I started spinning about 25 years ago, but never had time to really get good, and my Louet wheel has been sitting in the spare room for a very long time. I recently retired, and am hoping to get back into it, plus I have started to acquire other wheels. Today I bought a wheel for $20. Mostly complete, but definitely needs some tuning and a few pieces. It is unmarked but looks most similar to a Country Craftsman. I don't think it's really old, probably from the 70's or 80's would be my guess. I'll definitely be watching your videos as I get ready to set it up and actually spin on it. I would love to be able to spin bulky, cool yarn (from your comments, the Louet may be best for that). I seem to usually spin something more like string with too much twist. Once I get a wheel or wheels going, I'll be looking for more tutorials on UA-cam.
I guess i kind of subliminally figured it out, loove both my spinning wheels now! I'll watch this back soon, see if my brain also... picks up the fibre😊 Thanks Evie!!
I've recently acquired a very similar wheel and wasn't sure where to start. I stumbled on your videos and am so glad I did! This was a great overview of the mechanics of the wheel and gives me a starting point. Thanks so much!!
This was an interesting video. I am mostly self-taught, been spinning for 22 years. My first wheel was an antique, double drive. It took me 2 weeks to jury-rig it to get it usable. I retired it 3 years ago when I
I have a Schacht Ladybug that I was trying to use in double drive, but I need some drive band suggestions (mine didn't have the DD band when I bought it). I've tried #10 cotton thread and fingering weight linen yarn (not enough tension) and a thicker cotton yarn that was too thick to go into the bobbin Grove.
I'm so glad I found this channel. I own a LeClerc E-352 Traditional Spinning Wheel and the information provided here was exactly what I was looking for. Yourr instructions are clear and concise...fabulous teaching skills...Thanks!!
Thank you so much for all your videos! My daughter and I got hooked on dronspindles at Christmas, and have just brought our first wheel. With you instructions I have got it set up and working and we are about to start practicing! Thank you so much xx
Wow. Great!!! Instructions having just tried to understand and use a friends victorian wheel. As an engineer I'm impressed with the em. Engineering! Thanks.
I love your videos. I’ve been spinning for many years but I wish I’d have had your videos back then. Lol very informative and fun. I have several Ashford wheels and they are incredibly easy to use.
Hello!! I stumbled upon your lovely channel. My lovely husband found me a wheel at a yard sale, for a song, to add to my collection and fiber demo stuff. I’m newish tomorrow spinning and didn’t thing anything about the new set up (I have castle/tower wheels). My BFF’s partner has the same kind as my new one and wanted help setting it up. That’s how I ended up here. I shared the video with them. Now we have a date to correctly set up our wheels. I spin on a pollywog, and love spinning fingering weights. My goal is to make thread.
This is so helpful! I've just got my first spinning wheel and it's double drive, I can spin on it but I'm not sure that I really understand how I'm spinning on it (if that makes sense?). Seeing it explained in such a simple way has really helped me to understand what I'm doing, and how to adjust the wheel if it feels like something isn't right. Thank you for this!!!
Hi! I recently purchased a double drive wheel from the mid-1800's. She's not perfect but she is a super fast spinner! It's a good thing I was looking to make sock yarn, I don't think I could make worsted on her if I tried lol. So glad you made this, I'm still working on finding the "sweet spot" for tension and I find it changes as I'm spinning as well. I guess I'll just have to keep practicing! 😉
Thank you so much - hello from Wales, UK. I've recently aquired two double drive band Saxony style wheels - antique flax wheel and a wheel handmade in 1990 (makers plate is J Stobart and looks fairly similar to an Ashford Elizabeth) this video is so helpful to me in understanding how to set up up and use these wheels and achieve better consistency in my yarn production with them. Early days but after watching this I'm already improving! 😍
Thanks so much. I can understand your instructions easily. I've been spinning for years on a single drive - mostly chunky camel hair and angora goat. My own animals. Now I've been given a a double drive and love it. Just finishing off some sheep fleece and knitting a sleeping bag.
Hi there Jillian! I have a double drive that won't pull in so I've been searching for help! This was great! I see my whole flyer and maiden isn't at a good right angle to the drive wheel either. It's a hand made maple wheel the looks just like yours! The drive wheel is huge and heavey. Only one foot peddle. The maker is Lloyd E Real who I think is now an elderly man in Maine. This must be also a Canadian production wheel if it looks like yours? I follow your podcasts and was thrilled to find this one to help me with my problem child!
Wow what a great tutorial! I've watched several of your videos and though I'm a somewhat seasoned spinner, I always learn something new! Great job, keep it coming!!
Thanks you so much for this video. It's exactly what I need. I find an old spinning wheel and I was so disappointed because I was so sure is perfect to work. And your video give me a new hope. And other point I'm french and your explanation was so clear. Thank you so much 😊😊💋
I said I would go first and leave a comment about my favorite yarn to spin and my favorite wheel to spin it on, but I can decide! It's like trying to choose my favorite child! 😜
Haven't mastered any of mine, yet but I think it'll be a tie between my flax wheel and my walking wheel. 😁
My favorite to spin? My Navajo Churro wool. 😊 ps, watching this via someone else's channel, I'll be looking forward to seeing more videos soon! 😊

This is one of the best explanations of how double drive works that I have ever seen/read/watched.
Ok, I just found this channel today and I am going to say that it is by far the BEST instructional channel for spinning I have come across. Found your video for my wife. You're so helpful, thank you. Much appreciated.
Glad it was helpful!

I was today gifted a vintage wheel....I'm very pleased to have found your channel as your explanation is very very good.
Wonderful! Happy spinning! 😊
Excellent teaching! NOW I`m really able to practise on my grandmothers whel! Thanx soooo much! :D
Thank you for explaining how it works and how to make it work. I just switched my Minstrel over to double drive

That was the best video on double drive wheels!
Your are a great teacher…. I just took my first spinning class yesterday, and my teacher recommended your tutorials.
I’m definitely subscribing. Thank you and be well!

Thank you so much. I'll try right away... though I would have loved to actually SEE you put on the cotton band❤
You are great🤗
You’ve saved my life! I’ve been able to set up my antique double drive wheel thanks to you ❤️
I played around with my wheel last night and had issues with the tension.
And as a new spinner understanding the details of tensioning this type of wheel is so incredibly helpful!
i'm just getting back into spinning during lockdown in NZ Very helpful about double drive wheel
I've been spinning on my Ashford Traditional since 1968. I'm ordering a Kromski Traveler and have never seen, let alone use, a double drive wheel. Your video is sooo informational, I love it! You have a new subscriber.
Thank you, I'm glad I could help! Happy spinning!!! 💜

This was so helpful!!! I was just gifted a Clemes & Clemes Modern wheel, and you helped me unravel the mystery of the double-drive! You're an excellent teacher, Evie, and I'm grateful for your work.
You are so welcome! 😊🧶🐑🌷
Thank you for sharing the information I feel comfortable with my wheel now.
Thank you so much!! I was getting so frustrated trying to understand my new wheel, this made things so much clearer
You're very welcome! Happy spinning!
Just got a second hand DT Lendrum!! Thanks for all your videos. They are all so helpful.
I've hardly touched a spinning wheel before this, so I have a lot to learn and get used to.
very helpful!!!!!!! I really thought I get hang of double dive until I change my whorl and it changed everything. now I know what happened!
Just found your videos. Just what I need! Thank you!
I'll watch this back soon, see if my brain also... picks up the fibre😊
Thanks Evie!!
Thanks for making this easy to understand. I have a double drive Pipy saxony and she draws fast. I understand better now, thank you!
I retired it 3 years ago when I
What an interesting picture (in reference to the castle style wheels) - I had no idea they had been around that long!
What a beautiful wheel you have! Thank you, I'm glad I could help! 🥰
Thank you, this video was very helpful! I'm trying to learn to spin on a CPW and this explanation of a double drive clarified a lot.
Thanks.
Thanks for this video. I could NOT figure out my flax wheel and this is so helpful!
this is the best explanation I've found! thank you!
Your explanations are fabulous.
Thank you! This was such a help in getting going on my antique swedish wheel.
I love your videos. I’ve been spinning for many years but I wish I’d have had your videos back then. Lol very informative and fun. I have several Ashford wheels and they are incredibly easy to use.
Thank you so much. I love my Ashfords too! Happy spinning! ❤🐑✨🧶
Holy cow! This was the video I needed!
Wow, what an absolutely incredible video! Thank you so much, I’m so glad I found you :) I’ve never hit the subscribe button so hard lol
You are such a great teacher, thanks!
Thank you so much 😊😊💋
Thank you for your videos, you brighten up my day xx
Same to you! 🥰
Thanks, Evie, your video was very helpful!
