    Back when I was a teen or young adult, I used to do jobs for my grandpa at his stables. There would be long periods where he would have to go pick up lunch and/or do other things, so he would let me hang out in the office while he was out. He allowed me to use the computer that was in there to play games. I had a Warcraft disc, so decided to play that. Managed to beat the whole entire game, although I forgot if it was all in one sitting, or over multiple sessions.

      cbrman87 wc1 was harder in some ways. It moves much faster, so if you aren’t careful you’ll lose basically within the first minute on some levels. Each Warcraft game got progressively slower. However the complexity of war 1 was slower so it was easier in that it was straightforward what to do. You just had to be alert and move quick to do it.

    I remember when we got our first computer for the house hold. It was a tiger direct. Floppy disk drive. 56k modem with Southwestern bell. I was in elementary school. My dad was like 40 years old and he figured out how to set all this up from reading a computer book from the book store (there was no cell phone for looking up instructions) he set this game up with MSDOS and it was like the coolest thing ever. I would stand there next to the computer while one of my parents played it. It was so incredible and intense. The orcs being slain and their gory little remains plopping on the earth. It was frightening.

    • @einokeino303
      @einokeino303  10 років тому +2

      You need to install a MIDI driver to use soundfonts with DOS games that support general MIDI. For example kode54.net/bassmididrv/ There should be tutorials to be found how to use it. It's pretty straightforward. Just install the driver, then download a soundfont and select it in the configuration menu. Then select the correct MIDI port in dosbox.conf. You can list installed mididrivers in DOSBox by command mixer /listmidi. As mentioned in the description the soundfont used in this video is SGM-V2.01

    This is currently the best playthrough of wc1 on youtube. Nice and clean, and you are quite efficient. But i am a bit upset about your sometimes blatant disregard of your troops. More systematic approach would save more lives. But you are quite fast though, i would probably use more time to save more lives.
    And you got lucky on the last quest...

    • @einokeino303
      @einokeino303  9 років тому +2

      123TauruZ321 Thx! :) I've gotten used to newer RTS games where there are quick keys for units and buildings so I don't need to always control every single thing separately. I guess this is why I sometimes send units to their deaths, cause I trust they can do more good by offensive action instead of sitting around doing nothing. Also, it's likely clear that I was emphasizing clear time over kill / loss ratio in this playthrough. However, unit control is indeed where I need to improve micro regarding new RTS games as well. The last quest was probably the first blind attempt on that mission so I wasn't expecting the cued rush at the end. Got little suspense in the video so I didn't replay the mission for more optimized results.

      123TauruZ321 the game was cleared after he got 8 wizards. after that he didn't need the base as he could just spam endless elementals. it would be more balanced if each wizard just had one mana bar of spells and otherwise act as a normal range unit.

      Cyber88 the game, like other rts, is a game of counters.
      Archers are better for the cost at everything, but as said the catapults destroy them pretty quick. But the mass of archers is simply the best way to deal damage to an area.
      So the knights should be used for quick scouting, distraction, and taking out catapults, warlocks, and necros, and other key units.
      Footmen are good at beginning to protect long enough to get archers and if you want a meat shield for the archers. They can also be a target for catapults if you station them a few tiles in front so you can run the archers away and get something to the catapult to take it down.

    Is this a different version than the one i played? My level 11 is a lot harder. The orcs attacks at the beginning is relentless, I barely had enough time to build my defenses. I finally gave up and used the cheat codes.

    1) you need to turn up the music and down the sound effects
    2) would love for you to make versions where you take it slow, like you played it for the first time, enjoy it, hell, maybe even lower the speed

    I just tried playing this the other day for nostalgia's sake. The controls are so limited that it gets in the way of enjoyment. By contrast, revisiting WC2 has been very fun.

    Couldn't play farther than the first mission. Too much "yes, yes my lord" and being only able to pick 4 troops at a time. Sweet playthrough, it's nice to hear all these places still existing today.

      Never tried to build those myself. Not really necessary against AI, but might have uses against a human player to get advantage with ranged units. I doubt many would bother with the micro.

    • @einokeino303
      @einokeino303  8 років тому +1

      Michael VPS Depends what you're looking from specific game. Oldest RTS games like this and Dune 2 have so much micro going on even without any extra work, because you can't properly group units and control production so I prefer to do everything with less work. If you enjoy micro you'd probably enjoy Factorio? That one is too much for me :)

    Tried to play this myself but even with the mouse support mod it's just too awkward and tedious only being able to control 4 units at a time and having no shift order queueing functionality for peasants.

    • @phomjachana
      @phomjachana 8 років тому +1

      right click centers the screen around it. Left click selects a unit or building. Hold Control and left click and you create a box to select up to 4 units. Shift adds a unit or deselects a previously selected unit. Control and shift together adds Multiple units to the group but cannot remove from the group. In order to fulfill any commands you have to either use hotkeys or click on the icon on the left panel and then click on the screen what you want to do. And lastly, right click to cancel an action after you hotkeyed but before you ordered it on the screen. For the map, left and right click will move the screen to that location on the map.

    After see *StarCraft 2* videos it make me realize that *Blizzard* could continue with the *Warcraft series*. I would love to see *Warcraft 1* and *2* and all their cut-scenes and cinematic get a HD touch/remake, to match their current cinematic, and the growing trend of HD remasters brings some of the best classic gaming titles back to life. Publishers get to re-release proven titles and fans get to relive some of their favorites and for new one to experience them. A great HD remaster is a win-win for everyone and of course making a remaster/remake isn't easy though.

    Developers have to improve on aspects of the original titles, while keeping the timing, animation, and spirit that players remember but they could also had new things that they couldn't had before because the limitation back then. It requires programming and design effort and in some ways, a remaster/remake can be as difficult as making an original title but not impossible, I mean if a group of fans could remake *Resident Evil 2* what is stopping Blizzard to remake/remaster Warcraft 1 and 2?
