I've cut in half Blundstone boots, Redback Boots, and RM Williams boots but they are all Australian chelsea work boots. Today I am cutting the American brand Ariat's work chelsea called the Turbo Chelsea and it's got the most unique shank I've ever seen!

I bought these after watching this video and they lasted ok. The inside of the heel was the first thing to fall apart. Then the leather began to crack where it comes into contact with the side of the rubber sole. Overall it did ok for a boot at this price, but I think there are better overall value options.

He nailed it! I can't criticize this video! I am just about to confer the title of 'Shoe Dog" to Rose Anvil. The direct attached construction is when two polymers (Polyol & Isocyanate) in liquid form are mixed and poured into a mold and they thermoset to the shape of the mold. Also, keep in mind, ALL Chelsea waterproof boots are waterproof ONLY to the lowest part of the Gore (elastic) line. Water will seep in if you stand in water above the lowest gore line. TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) has a very high abrasion and even that light skin which forms the outer sole shell will last a very long time. Drawback of TPU - the colder it gets, the harder the TPU gets and becomes very slippery. The Swenflex material will surprise it, it is very puncture resistant and made in Ontario, Canada. Please put a nail in a 2 by 4 and try to push the Swenflex thru it. You will see what I mean.

I'm a groundskeeper and have the same reservations. But every year our crew gets a stipend towards new boots, this year was notable when our boss and another guy picked up Ariat slip-on cowboy style work boots. Apparently after a couple of weeks when they're broken in, my coworkers swear that the foot doesn't slip around as much as during the initial try-on. I think fitting them in person also really helps, as some people are more comfortable with a half size down in Chelseas.
Now that Weston has reviewed this moderately priced pair, I'm pretty torn between these and the Thursday Chelseas for outside of work.

Pull on work boots have to be sized correctly for a pull on. When you first get a pull on boot you want it really snug and also true to size. You shouldn't buy pull on boots with any extra room...you want them tight. The first few weeks of break in will be a little rough, but man let me tell you. Once you get a set of pull ons that fit right broke in good, you won't go back. I made the switch 10yrs ago and don't miss tie ups one bit‼️

Hey man. Love the Videos. Very informative. Is there any chance you will be reviewing shoes made for motorcycling? I don’t like the aesthetics of pure motorcycle shoes but there are some hybrids. Would love to see what you got to say about them.

I'd like to see the Wolverine I-90 Romeo cut in half to compare with the Ariats. When I was looking for a romeo/chelsea I came down to these two boots and ended up going with the Wolverine because they felt more solid. The Wolverine have been great so far (on my feet 10-12 hours a day) but squeak quite a bit on some vinyl composite flooring...

This is night and day compared to that Carhartt ... thing.
The punture resistant midsole is certified to EN ISO 12568 standard (most sources state that it should actually be EN ISO 20345 : 2011 for safety boots?), wich means:
"The resistance to penetration of this footwear was tested in the laboratory using a blunt test nail of 4.5mm diameter and a force of 1100N."
These don't look like they have a toe cap, but if they did, it should be able to withstand 200J according to the same norm.
I think the most boot-for-the-money is to be had with cheaper certified safety boots. They must be pretty good quality (last about a year on the job site), must meet the sefety requirements and must be cheap in a very competitive market.

Comfort is a potential problem though... In Germany, the employer has to provide safety gear for employees who work in positions where it might be needed (there's a whole bunch of laws...). The naturally provide you with one of the cheaper boots out there and they were really uncomfortable... You always got stinky feet and there wasn't any support in the places where you would need it...

I know the situation, I live in Germany and work(ed) as an Electrician.
Where I worked we had a yearly budget of ~100€ paid for by the firm for shoes wich we would then go buy ourselves, the other work clothes were provided.
I had different kinds of boots and shoes and the last few times bought Lemaitre Saxo S3. They wear like sneakers and are not terribly expensive (about 70€).
The really cheap safety boots for 20-30€ with steel toe and midsole etc. are not very comfortable of course. But even those are pretty good value (i.e. not very lage margins for the manufacturers) considering the materials and construction compared to many of the other very cheap kinds of shoes.

For what it's worth, my lace up $200 range ariats are the only boots that survived even three months (actually made it 9 still going) at the quarry. The continual cycle of full of water/saturated, cold, cover in lime is ruthless on leather, and they don't look new but they're still on my rack as my work boot, and can't get a new pair until they die.

I’m stuck between buying the Thursday boot explorer ($249) or the solovair derby ($220). Any recommends? Thursday is prob better construction but the aesthetic of solovair is more pleasing than the Thursday to me, not that the Thursday isn’t just I like the chunkier look for combat boots.

Just found your channel Weston and you take boot quality serious. That is awesome! I have had 4 pairs of thorogoods over the last 15 years of being a construction electrician. They are great for being on a dirty job site. I have changed careers and now put lot of miles on my boots now so I switched to Ariat turbos. I have 2 pairs in the 6in work boot style. The first pair went a year before I wore a small hole through the leather of toe. The insole is shot too. I want to glue on a toe cap and make them my camping boots.
What would you recommend for leather care for these type boots?
