All great advice Alex. You are right, rent in the resort, not from the Airport. Million times less stress, trust me. I’ve been renting cars abroad since 1988. Can I just say, I’ve used a local company the last two years, based in the resort. Formentor Rent a car based in Puerto Pollenca, in case anyone is interested. They have been great with me and a not a bit like the big airport based companies. I’m sure this will go for countless other local smaller car hire firms in Pollenca and other resorts around the island. Good luck!

Very useful video, Alex for those new to car hire and to those of us who regularly hire cars throughout the year. Sadly car hire the world over seems to have a horrendous reputation with tales of checking staff being on bonus payments for ‘finding’ damage to returned vehicles. You’re absolutely right that an Annual insurance cover is one way to deal with it, although as other viewers have said, you still have the hassle of reclaiming any ‘extra’ charges the hire company may still try to throw at you. My solution, for what it’s worth, for my own no-worry holidays has, for many years, been to stick to the same company (at least in Mallorca and it’s even one without the best of reputations!), build up some sort of relationship with one of their team who I now deal with direct and yes, effectively I do suck it up by taking out the max insurance cover when pre-booking, but I do get treated well at the reception desk and and just build it all in to the total holiday cost. Expensive? Yes, but given the experiences I’ve read from some people, I reckon I’m probably at the very least still breaking even over many years and fortunately I’ve had none of the hassle.
We always rent a car in Lanzarote as we did 6 months ago. Very good service and price but we always do what you say at the beginning! Just a note that renting in France a year ago was extortionate for insurance/damage waiver etc!! Not rented in Mallorca. Great advice vlog..👍
Glad you have highlighted car rental Alex. I had a bad experience last year at Palma airport. On returning the car the staff member ran his finger up and down the car until he found tiniest scratch (it was a silver car picked up in the dark multi-storey and drop off was in a much lighter area so I could have easily missed it). After finding the mark he didnt even bother checking the rest of the car, his work was done, £400 taken from my deposit. I will certainly not be OK using them again. I now video the car on pick up btw.
Just catching up again Alex and I must say what a great informative video again. 👍 The car hire companies are not a good advertisement for Palma de Mallorca Airport obviously and need to sort this out very quickly. I'm being totally honest with you,....when we have visited in the winter months, you still need to be careful of who you hire from and fortunately for us , we always check the car , with pictures a absolute must. Fully agree with Alex's recommendations. Got back from Majorca in June and rented a car from Avis. They go over the car on return with a fine tooth comb and highlight all marks and scratches. (the lady which conducted this for Avis commented that they are on a bonus to highlight and charge customers). Also be warned about upgrades. we were quoted eur65 for the week and then they charged us eur 65 per day! had to claim via the European car rental conciliation service which thankfully managed to get a full refund.

I have to say that the car hire companies on Majorca ,sometimes do try these tricks to get extra money from you. Good advice Alex to check and take photos of the car inside and out, even the smallest scratch or dent they will say that you must have done it while the car was in your hands . You can do your booking online before you go on holiday including online . Fewer people to the islands, and less money for the islands. Perhaps that is what they want?, or do they 🎉🎉🎉

I have to say that hire car rental should be a last resort - no pun intended. Fortunately, in Majorca buses and taxis are abundant, so getting around is relatively easy. If you're off to the US, you'll find a substantial increase in car rental costs on three years ago. As to a fair and helpful car rental company, I have yet to find one. Try hiring an EV and you're on your own re operation including charging. Thanks, Alex!
Me and my partner are (just about) under 25 and the cost to rent a car has absolutely skyrocketed for us all over Europe. Costs were already higher than for over 25s but now it just doesn't make any sense to spend all that money on a car when we could use it on food, drinks etc while on holiday.
Sounds familiar, they always screw you with credit card story and with upsell insurance BS. I bought a car and bringing it over, as we live there a couple of months a year.
So how would you advise someone to get around without a car? Are taxis or Ubers reasonably priced and a lot of them? Can they take you all over the island?
All quite worrying, though a common thing with car hire sadly. Had a pain free car hire in Majorca a few years back from a local company, I did take out my own insurance excess cover via a UK company before hand to reduce my costs massively.
Good information about rental cars in Mallorca. But unfortunately this also applies to mainland Spain, namely in Alicante at the airport. I also booked everything from home, including all insurance. When picking up the car they say that not everything is insured, but I say that it is. Then after much discussion they try to rent out a larger car with an additional charge, one larger type would cost me 500 euros for 2 weeks??? I say no and that I have already paid 450 euros for two weeks (Corsa type) so I want that car and only pay for the petrol. This discussion went on for 30 minutes until I got angry. I received a Corsa with a lot of damage and fortunately it was described in the rental contract. When we returned it after 2 weeks, there was an older British couple returning their rental car. In Spanish, the lady from the rental company said that there were all kinds of tiny scratches on the car. She photographed them and she said they were taken by the driver. Because the British couple could not understand her, they kept nodding yes when the landlady found another small scratch (which had been there for a long time). Then it was my turn with my Corsa. And yes, she also found tiny scratches on the rims there. I would have done that?? Because I could say no very angrily in my best Spanish and I am almost 2 meters tall and I could look very angry and tell her that the car was like this when I got it, I was allowed to leave. Fortunately, I did not receive any subsequent bills, but perhaps the rental company still claimed damages from the intermediary I rented from even though I had paid the insurance. I think this way of earning extra money by Spanish rental companies is really worthless and this should not be allowed. That's why I find it annoying to go on holiday to Spain again and rent a car. They have been doing it this way for years. Greetings, Rick.

€1600 euro deposit too on top of the actual fee. Bloody ridiculous. I actually stewed it over for a few days as on top of all the other holiday expenses that is a lot of money.
i would not rent a car in majorca. Public transport is clean, cheap and plentiful. Also, some of the driving and conditions of vehicles in the road is very questionable to say the least....and i have been to the far east and eygypt 😅
I flew into Palma last year for a week's vacation in Alcudia and pre-paid for an automatic mid-size SUV rental car (should have been a Qashqai auto) with a well known company who I have a membership with for many years (from UK rentals). I provided my flight details to them at the time of booking. My flight was on time and when I arrived at the pickup area a representative informed me that they had no automatic mid-size or even small-size cars available and tried to coax me into taking an automatic Volvo XC90 at a "favourable" extra daily rate. Still far too much extra than I wanted to pay and also I didn't want to be driving around in that monster SUV. Long story short - I was forced to take a very small manual at the same price as I had paid for. I HATE these people!
Sounds like it's best not to hire a car over there in summer. The only thing guaranteed is that you can get a good parking spot on the motorway. What's the atmosphere towards the English people, like after the football Alex?
We hired a car from Palma airport, sixt, also a bad experience, we ended up paying loads more than we believed we would. Would never hire again in Majorca
Tbh I found the cost of car hire expensive, especially compared to my last car hire abroad in Corfu. Have looked a few times, but cannot justify the high cost.
Ive mentioned my experience with a certain company in a previous video made my Alex. Ive been a member with this hire car company for a very long time and every year we enjoy 10% off our rental. In May I booked online and noticed the 10% wasnt applied so I called them. Not a problem and we are really sorry we will send you a new link to your hire car with the 10% applied. Went through the detail and everything looked good with the total. Pressed pay....Refused! Whats goung on here then. Rang my CC company and they were great. They told me they refused the transaction because of a hidden charge of £1200 attached to the bill! Normally I swipe my credit card at the airport after Ive paid for the car, that additional charge is cover. Never has it been taken in a total one off payment. Anyway we went with another firm, Fiat 500 was the cheapest, 66,000km on the clock and sounding like it had done 100,000km! Terrible experience

And I dread to think how that would work out too!
The cost of car hire and you could go on holiday again !
Sounds familiar, they always screw you with credit card story and with upsell insurance BS. I bought a car and bringing it over, as we live there a couple of months a year.
what company was it that made this issue.. i have a car booked from recordgo
Thank you for the information! Is there any way to visit the beaches using public transport? Or perhaps special buses for this purpose? Thank you!
Good tip - I do this too - the other way around
It has been going on for years and I wish they’d stop !
Hi Alex look nice there not been bad here in rotherham sun was out am off work but no holiday to mallorca this time lol😢
Sorry to hear June !
Sorry alex was meaning got wk.off work and not comjng to mallorca been already in may lol i being greedy i going menorca end sept with women friends leaving hubby at home lol.@MallorcaUnderTheSun
How many days was he trying to hire the car? 1;400 seems a bit high
Which was the car hiring company under discussion here?
:(
Sounds like it's best not to hire a car over there in summer. The only thing guaranteed is that you can get a good parking spot on the motorway. What's the atmosphere towards the English people, like after the football Alex?
Haha that’s true ! No attitude to the English - life goes on as normal !
Hi what beach and bar is this looks a nice setup ?
Karibu beach in Magaluf!
It is expensive!
Absolutely shocking
Blimey after this info I would not ever hire a car, stick to organise trips, buses or taxis
Do they rent a card with debit card or it’s mandatory to have a credit card?
Normally credit cards
Just after hiring a car in Mallorca for the first time and not to sure now after watching 🙈 went to cancel it but I couldn’t it was none refundable silly me any advice on how to get out of it ?
Don't try to get out of it just be careful and read all the small print. I have hired there at least 30 times in the last 20 years and I've never had a problem!
ha ha 34 degrees it is creeping up here in england could reach 14 this week lol
Was going to hire a car forget that now trust is everything
Rekord Go!
Car helps to explore best places of Mallorca
Ok mobility have a fast track service which cost 40 euro, they make the people who don't pay for it wait for nearly 2 hours before they get their car. Literally holding you to ransom.
That’s terrible :(
Alex, after the interview, did you ask Ricky Gervais for an autograph ?
I know its not your fault but didnt the spanish tour to Germany to watch football?
Great advice don’t sapose u can comment and good compenys to book for private transfers 😂
Why has my comment been taken down about ok mobility
It wasn’t - I’ve only just gone into the comments of this video - if you put a link then maybe UA-cam blocked it
But I'm trying to tell People what a rip off this company is doing go to trust pilot to see reviews they owe me 800 euro still can not get a reply .I went to majorca 4 weeks after car hire and stood in front of car hire desk telling customers not to deal with this company
They have taken my reply to you down as well are they frighten of some thing back in a week will go to desk and distrust proceedings I will get my money back
Come on Alex NAME THE COMPANY
It's OK mobility
I wasn’t sure if I should tbh - because I’ve heard this happen with other companies too and I didn’t want just them to be singled out for being absolutely terrible
@@Jonathan-z6v9qI’ve heard they can be terrible too
It makes me wonder if it good to come to mallorca Different story everyday what’s next
Why hire a car, use public transport or No Frills Tours and see the island and have a Sangria or 3
An other comment taken down
I’ve been out for dinner and haven’t even looked at comments so somehow your comment is getting blocked. I’ll take a look
What I'd the name if the here company NAME THEM it's so important NAME THEM
It's OK mobility I made a comment but them it's been taken down
I didn’t name them because I heard people have a similar experience with other companies - so unfair to single them out
100% this was ok mobility he used, just shocking customer service.
Not just ok mobility I have heard bad things about
@@MallorcaUnderTheSun Hi, which company was this please? I've just hired a car for the first time from Record go and can still switch it. Please let me know! I'd much appreciate it!
The People in your column who had car 🚗 hire have got to be the thickest People on the planet, it's common sense tae do your back ground check on hiring a rental car, also if Majorca doesn't want tourists don't go to Majorca stuff them and take yer money to another island Majorca needs you more than you need it
No - the company they rented with is reputable
Name the rental company then people can avoid using them, or even better the company will see how bad this is and change their processes!!
Why did my comment on ok mobility taken down
It wasn’t
Only British seem to have problems 😂😂😂
If you watch this channel regularly you'd never visit Majorca 🤣 , nothing but negative haha
That's absolutely rubbish..
Alex doe's a brilliant job with all information...
Are you trolling 🧌
@@chrisfinch3019haha go look at the last few videos then 😅
Warning, be careful, anti tourism, targeted, don’t be a victim
That’s just this week 😂
You’d sweat Majorca was Baghdad with all the danger announcements 😂
😂😂😂😂. These videos still keep coming up on my feed. I just had to watch this when it said WARNING.
I hired from Avis a couple of weeks ago. We pre paid for our hire car, had full itinerary of scratches on it and were not charged any extra on our card when picking it up. We pre paid with Amex and presented with the same card when collecting our car. There were no extra charges. We were delayed flying in but got our car no problem and they even upgraded us with no extra charge! They could not be more courteous and look forward to welcoming us back in 10 days when we return. We always hire from Avis no problems. We were going to buy a car but decided this was easier.
Driving back to Palma from our home in the South West of Mallorca was easy as well. As a family, we have owned cars in Mallorca and hired several times a year for over 40 years and never had issues.
Traffic and getting petrol on way back to the airport was quick and easy late afternoon for us this month. Going through the airport and flight home was easy too.
If you are going to get robbed- you will be robbed whetherer you are a tourist or not or whether in a hire car or not.
Sensible advice is not to bring expensive jewllery especially if you are out in crowded places as gangs of theives are active. But they are not local people. They have a 'young men arriving on dinghy' problem in Mallorca just like we in the UK and most of Europe have right now.
I was in Palma earlier this year and had a very expensive bracelet taken off my wrist that I always wear. Didn't know til I got home. GUTTED, but cannot tell you how wonderful police and locals were in helping me.
But this is a problem in all capital cities not just Palma or indeed Mallorca. These guys are quick, clever and work in gangs.
I have many many local friends here who say they are not Spanish. They are VERY clear about that. They say they are Mallorcan and have lived here several generations as far back as they can trace. They say that although they were self sufficient 60 years ago without tourusm, they wanted to be brought into modern times. They wanted more cosmopolitan lifestyles and to travel and have nice things etc. so they created there tourism industries by importing workers from the mainland apparently and it is the children of those workers that came from abroad who are protesting now they say, not them. They say that they love and welcome tourism.
I agree with Alex though. Why chance it. Stay away from Palma when there is a protest and just enjoy the rest of the island. We certainly will be.
It was great mixing with the locals on the beach and watching Spain V Germany with them and Germans in our favourite local place. Had such a laugh. All good natured fun and banter. Roll on for Sister Sledge in our Port and Arge in Palma Nova in a couple of weeks!
Mallorca always has been and always will be a special place and has my heart ❤️🙏

I used to hire a car all the time and ever since the huge deposit started happening ah knew there was gonna be some kinda con going on.So no car for me,taxis and buses or offski to Greece.
My last experience with car hire in the Balearics has put me off ever hiring a car again. In future l’ll use public transport, where possible, or use taxi’s for local journeys Alex 🚍🚖
