Tip #1 is so very, very important. I used to work in customer service for a major international car rental company. If there are any issues at all, they are resolved much faster if there isn't a third party booking agent involved. As a frequent traveler, I always price check through third party sites and then go directly to the car rental website. The one-time I did have an issue, it was resolved immediately with no hassle.
As it was covered in the video, I highly recommend to use your mobile phone and make a video of the car inside and out; and take photos of any preexisting damage before you get the keys.
Very helpful. However, in my case, on my upcoming trip to Spain, American Express automatically covers the insurance without additional cost, as long as the rental is paid completely through American Express, and only if I decline all insurance options at the counter. This is in writing from AMEX and includes medical and theft of the car or contents.
For my trip this Oct/Nov, I may need to buy insurance; despite booking the car on my AMEX…..for about half our trip to Europe, we’ll be in Italy (driving from Barcelona after visiting with my wife’s family for a few days first). AMEX, specifically, excludes Italy for coverage.
APPLAUSE, APPLAUSE.....FIRST TRIP TO VALENCIA WAS WONDERFUL....EXCEPT WHEN WE GOT TO THE CAR RENTAL PLACE...THAT WAS OUTSIDE DE AIRPORT FROM A SO CALLED CAR RENTAL GROUP, NOT WORTH MENTIONING HERE BUT ARE TO BE AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS. THE ONES IN THE AIRPORT ITSELF ARE FINE, I'M SURE. THANK YOU.....VALUABLE ADVISE, RETURNING TO SPAIN AND I WILL BE RENTING A CAR SOON......LOVE SPAIN
I always go via the USA website for the major companies because most U.S residents have this. I then buy my own excess insurance. UK residents don't tend to have this cover. So the '.co.uk' website address tends to preload the quote with extra insurance.
My fiancé and I are planning to elope in Spain. We are planning on getting a rental in Barcelona, Magala, Granada and Madrid. Are there the same rental companies at airports? Thanks for all your helpful information!
I'm going to Menorca in July do i need to put a deposit down even if I have insurance on the hire car I don't want to have a charge as I have a debit card not a credit card??
Hi Diego! It depends on who you have the insurance with and how you hired it. If you rented the car directly with the company and paid their insurance, you shouldn’t have a problem. But in other scenarios, it’s very possible that they’ll ask you for a credit card. They won’t accept a debit card! So if you don’t have one I strongly encourage you to contact them before your trip to make sure you don’t need a deposit. They literally won’t give you the car with a debit card if you need to leave a deposit. Also, the credit card needs to be in the name of the person who’s made the reservation. Even if your wife is with you, they won’t accept it.
Why pay £5 to £10 a day for the company insurance when you can take out world or European insurance watch the Martin Lewis video the company’s are scamming you
Sorry but this video is not good because incomplete.... - method of payments: it does not need to be a credit card, more and more company accept debit card as well, but you have to check the term and condition - Insurance: basically pay and don't think, that's your advice... What about people having insurance with their payment card? - Run at the airport: WTF ? All the people at the renting station are in your flight ? What the logic.... Instead make sure to give your flight number so that your reservation is not void instead of delays, thats a useful tip. Don't get me wrong, you give some nice tips for folks having no idea at all about what they are doing, but this isn't a video about been smart while renting a car
The video is focusing on rentals in Spain but is definitely appliable to many Europeans destinations such as Italy where the system is very similar, clearly is also is addressed to non frequent experienced travelers. About method of payment the problem is not to pay the rental fee itself but to block the required deposit amount, most of rental companies, especially the local ones do not accept debit or prepaid cards for this and you end up being denied at rental office and your booking cancelled, even more when you already paid in advance the fare to the online rental agency and your payment is non refundable. Just read the number of reviews where the usual non experienced traveler complaining because they have been rejected at rental desk because of credit card issue.
Again for the debit card not accepted, the real tip to give is to check the term and condition to check the accepted payment methods. Overall your video is nice, just a bit "brain off and pay" on some points to be real tips and tricks to be smart when renting a car in Europe
My British Airlines Visa Card has car insurance included. The car we are looking at is $12/day for insurance. We plan to stay in north spain for around a month. Is it still advisable to use their insurance? PS, very well done video!!
I would. It’s not that the Visa’s insurance wouldn’t work if you encounter any issues, but the bureaucratic nightmare you’ll have to go through to get everything sorted out isn’t worth it in my opinion. That being said… the north of Spain isn’t as bad as the islands, and there are other factors like how much you’ll be driving, what time of the year, where you’ll be parking, etc.
@@sensationalspain My wife (the driver) grew up in the south of france, so she is pretty familiar with the driving. I read that liability insurance is required to be included in fee for renting a car. The visa covers damage and theft. We pretty typically go off season and stay on familiar roads visiting family and friends.

Great video! And your English is almost perfect, which is not easy when it is a 2nd language. I like how thorough and organized you are in this video.
That was one of the most useful video on car rental. Thank you very much :)
Thank you very much! I’m glad you liked it.
This is a high quality video and should be #1 guidance for renting cars in Europe.
Thank you so much, and there is my subscription🙏🏻
Thank you! Means a lot!
This was very helpful as we're booking our rental car this week for November. Thank you for this thorough explanation of potential pitfalls.
Best video I have seen on rental car advise. Thank you.

This is such a great video. Information presented are so vital and easy to understand. Thank you very much.
Don't forget your International Driving Permit. Thanks for the info!
Really really good, thanks. The point about taking photos of the gas tank before taking the car is great too.
As it was covered in the video, I highly recommend to use your mobile phone and make a video of the car inside and out; and take photos of any preexisting damage before you get the keys.
So helpful! Thank you!
Very thorough!!! Great information!!
What about the vehicle rental insurance that is provided through your credit card?
this is so helpful. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
I have a car reserved with enterprise in Barcelona (airport) near the end of October this year. For 2 weeks it’ll be just under $700.

Can you rent with debit car or have to be credit car only?
Will I be okay just with a USA driver license or do I realy need an internacional licence?
Which is the best hire company in barcelona with fair prices?
My credit card provides primary car rental insurance. You didn't cover that!
Yes! Absolutely! But I strongly recommend you book in advanced.

What if you don’t have a credit card
For Ibiza what company?
I live in the U.S. Can I rent a car with my driver license? Or do I need an International Permit?
Permit !!
People like Record Go, Gold Car and FireFly can keep their cars.
I'd NEVER book with them.
Not even if they said it was free. 😂
Is Wiber rent a car company trustworthy?
Step 1: Email agency for best rate on full/unlimited car option.
Step 2: Pick up car.
