The thing is the spirits that pick the Shield Hero pick certain qualities. And his biggest quality is being a protector for people and animals. And in online gaming he plays support and guild leader. Animals naturally goes over to him because they feel protected by him.

Religion about Heroes, huh? Shield Hero - God of Rage, worshiped by those betrayed. Spear Hero - God of Foolishness, worshiped by those who are shallow. Sword Hero - God of Ignorance, worshiped and then hated by those he saved. Bow Hero - God of Beauty, worshiped by Nobility. We haven't seen much about Sword Hero and almost nothing about Bow Hero, so that's all I could think of.

Sword hero is not much ignorant. Out of the 3 stupid heroes, he's the one that understands most of any given circumstances. He understood his mistake with that zombie dragon, noticed the rigged duel between shield and spear, and come to terms with himself when he was cursed. Sword hero is entrusted by naofumi of all people to uncover the corruption and schemes of the kingdom in the latest episode.
Spoiler: Or you know she's the antagonist of the various world's in conflict as she is a shard of the entity that is trying to consume those worlds and their energy, with the dispute appearing in the form of the waves. But then again, that was the WN. She's essentially there to cause discourse within the world (s) along with the other shards to weaken the heroes there so that they fail against the waves. But from what I've read, while the LN is vastly different, the end result is likely the same.
The Church of the Three Heroes gives her a moral validation for her actions (at least within the nation) but ultimately she's just a sadistic psychopath.

I absolutely hate Myne. If I was the shield hero, she, and all the other so-called heroes would be dead. The protagonist has proven many times now that he doesn't need the other heroes, just his own team. The other "heroes" are just in the way, and cause more trouble than not. I think that he won't be going home.
Well in canon the reason why the heroes are needed is that even if one of them gets killed, the level of all the monsters in the wave (and the world though I'm not sure about this) rises exponentially. So if any of the heroes die the wave becomes way more lethal. That's why Glass an co. were so bent on trying to eliminate the heroes so that the remaining ones get overwhelmed by the wave due to the increased difficulty. And as for Myne yeah in LN she gets off with a slap on her wrist cause killing her will cause an uproar in the kingdom but read the WN if you want to taste the sweet sweet vengeance on Myne though it sours off when the finale happens but it get's better again XD

5 Cardinal Heroes Sword Hero Bow Hero Spear Hero Shield Hero and the new hero, Truth Hero, the Hero who'll being truth and justice for the Shield Hero.
Warning: slight spoilers after the break. The opening paragraph is stuff covered in the web novel which will probably never get animated so... spoilers again I guess, but I still suggest you read them to understand future episodes better. . . . Myne's motivations for causing the duel between Naofumi and Motoyasu are much more sinister in the novels. See in chapters 76-80 it's revealed that hatred against demihumans in Melromarc is so bad that any demihuman who is out without a slave-crest is immediately hunted down and terminated or sold to slavery. Demihumans with a slave crest may have it bad, but at least they have some sort of lawful protection against termination, since they are considered "property". By undoing Raphtalia's slave-crest, Myne intended to remove that protection. She didn't want to free Raphtalia, she wanted to *kill* Raphtalia. Motoyasu is nothing more than a "useful idiot" to Myne i.e. someone who takes her word and does what she wants without questioning her motives or even if what she says is remotely plausible. She doesn't really care for him and doesn't really like him. It's just that out of the three other cardinal heroes, he is the easier to manipulate. Keep that in mind as it plays an enormous part later in the series. Also, Myne becomes a much more despicable character once you find out that Naofumi isn't the first one she falsely accuses of rape (also, he is not going to be the last). Remember that the Melromarc Kingdom is a matriarchy and any attempts of sexual assault towards a woman are punishable by death. Also remember that Naofumi only got away with his life because he was one of the four cardinal heroes. Which means that plenty of other men got accused by Myne just for the lolz and she watched them die, presumably after stealing their funds and their equipment. She is not only a serial false-rape accuser, she is a serial *killer*. Finally, Myne is based on someone the author actually knew. Kind of makes you wonder if the author was betrayed in a similar way, like Naofumi.
I didn't realize she had such a body count. Honestly more people should have doubted her claims if this keeps happening to her so much and she quickly bounces back each time. I have wondered if she would have slept with Naofumi if she had been able to get him drunk, as I wouldn't put it past her.

All 4 heros are good people in their own way, it's just that the Spear hero has a major weakness that Myne can capitalize on - the other two, not so much. (And, to be fair, you'd keep a cautious distance too if someone was accused of rape, and all you had to say otherwise is a gut feeling.)
Spoilers: The king knew Myne was lying. He only aided her because he is a religious fanatic who hates the shield. Myne isn’t religious she’s just selfish.
Truth Hero There’s actually an event in the manga that shows how deep his hatred runs. Spoilers. When the second wave hits the Ren Itsuki and Motoyasu are very unsuccessful repelling the wave. While Naofumi on the other hand was the only one strong enough to fight back despite the other 3 heroes having ranked up and Naofumi being forbidden from ranking up by the king. The king summons Naofumi to the throne room solely to interrogate him on how he got so strong and to share his secrets for the sake of the kingdom. Things don’t go very pleasant in this exchange. Naofumi exclaims “I don’t think you understand the situation. I’m the only one who can defend your kingdom and you and that bitch have made a habit of pissing me off. But I’ll protect your kingdom on one condition. Get down on your knees and beg for it!” The king refused to do it until the end. He puts his hatred of the shield before the lives of his people. Ironically this is his downfall.

Well I think Myne is best girl. Raphtalia would be dead if not for her. Naofumi wouldn't have been such an interesting character if not for his change of attitude towards the world (and he'd likely wouldn't survive without that attitude change). Naofumi would still be seeing Raphtalia as child if not for the forced duel. And Spear Hero wouldn't have gotten kicked in the balls without her.

Myne's trap worked on everyone. The SJWs and the people who hate them. They _both_ got tricked. She accused Naofumi of a crime that would provoke an _emotional response_ in people, the citizens in the country as well as the people watching the anime. And because people got so up in arms about "rape this, false accusations that," they aren't seeing the very simple truth: *Myne wants to destroy the Shield Hero by any means necessary.* She could have said Naofumi was on a mission to poison the world's supply of pizza if she thought people would actually believe it. But she went for an accusation where she had the power to control the narrative and already existing cultural bias would lend Naofumi no favors.
The other heroes have basically zero moral obligations and are only doing it for rewards because they think it's a game despite them all dying in seriously fatal manners with almost 0 chance of survival. Even in the RPGs I play, I have hard moral obligations that are difficult to ignore, I can't unalive any halfway decent characters without feeling bad unless that's the point of my character like an assassin. All 4 of them are heroes and the only one with moral obligations is Naofumi.

When you think about it, it's actually rather hilarious that these same people didn't throw nearly as much of a stink about past female villain characters who have done arguably worse things in other well-known anime titles. Medusa Gorgon from Soul Eater tried to drown the world into madness, which is basically destruction, and experimented on her own child. Kiryuuin Ragyu did the exact same horrible things, but with two daughters. And then we have side-villain characters like Lust from the Full Metal Alchemist series who won't hesitate to seduce a man with her body and then murder him five minutes after. Long story short - Female characters can and will do horrible things and they do exist.

Basically, The Legend in that world says that All Four Sword, Spear, Bow, and Shield are essential to fighting the Waves, but then You only want 3 because of what the Shield Hero did?! That faction that Myne is part of basically goes against the Legend that has been set for many years to come. As someone who reads the Light Novel......and the Wiki......Things make a lot of sense. Like how the Accusation being lead to the Duel being set up from the very beginning. Sure the Female writer is backlash at this point but! First things first; I didn't know there was such an uproar over myne from sjw's. While Rape accusations should always be taken extremely serious since most women don't lie about it, there ARE some who do lie without batting an eye, as all they want is to inflict pain to someone they feel slighted them. Can't find any information to back it up. But it could explain a lot about her disgusting and pretty much cartoonishly villain behavior. I mean she does so much fucked up shit in the future of the series and it honestly makes you wonder how a single person can possibly be SO evil. I mean she sells one of her fellow female party members into sex slavery. I can not agree with you more. Like I had a similar experience happen to me at a workplace and man was that a horrible experience, but I was so lucky to have my other co-workers come out and support me and believe that I was innocent. That kinda shit happens sometime and it sucks but having even the slightest of support and trust from your peers really makes a difference because just having people stand with you through tough times can take a lot of the stress off of you knowing that walking in next morning you won't feel alienated. I think my favorite part of the series so far (i've only been watching the anime) is when the king tries to rip Naofumi off after saving the village. Despite both the sword and bow hero not liking him, they make the king give him his share for protecting the village.

I think if you take gender out of it, and look primarily at how shield hero is isolated due to shaming and assumptions about qualities he has as an individual AND most importantly, his "worthiness" in their society based on these qualities as a shield wielder (qualities that he despite all his desires, cannot change) the manga does give a really broad perspective of what it's like for any victims of isolation, inequality based on broader societies perceptions of what a "hero" (or irl... a cis-male or cis-female or trans-male or trans-female or non-binary, etc) should be. It does suggest that qualities that are desirable by the masses are directly linked to perceptions of those individuals as an ideological construct - but using the construct of a "hero" not gender or other personal, individual identifiers. The only way societies negative perception of worth and level of respect changes in the anime is through Naofumi earning the respect of people gradually, by performing multiple acts of sacrifice, humility and those that uphold the human dignity of others - often still at a cost to himself. Basically, the world is unfair and will judge people based on stereotypical perceptions of what is "normal/ desirable"... but this show can honestly be seen to demonstrate that yes, some individuals do have it easier by winning approval, acceptance or understanding simply because they fit stereotypical moulds of assumed desirable characteristics. But at least in the anime, those same characters who simply declare entitlement and respect because of those qualities (like the other 3 "heroes" and a number of the less desirable characters in the anime/manga) are shown that they don't necessarily maintain that privilege or high respect through personal characteristics alone (e.g. with the villagers). People constantly need to work on understanding each other, improving themselves and recognise that positive actions change perceptions - Not the use of shaming, pushing blame or going around starting arguments with anyone who disagrees with you or doesn't perceive you in the way you should be perceived. lol sorry for the giant-ass rant. ^__^ "
The character herself was nicely written as really a villain in many ways though the west their SJW are naïve in a way things like false rape accusations do happen and could no matter the country even in my own country I think there are some just don't remember them. Anyways bitch/Malty is a very effectively written character that will likely be remember as how she is as a villain and some other things though in my personal list of worse female characters terms of character well she's meant to be a villain hence fits to be there.

Wow, Truth Hero, that was an incredibly accurate assessment of Myne. I originally just assumed that her character played as a sort of dynamic foil for Raphtalia/Filo who were kind, loyal, and trustworthy to Naofumi. That Myne was supposed to be the pure ruthless evil of our story that you just accepted and didn't really have any rational reasoning for, but now I see it differently. You are completely right... The reigning religion of the region is the Church of the Three Hero's, to which Myne fully believes in (whether it is true faith or just an excuse to be ruthless I don't know, but the purpose is there) which causes her to look down on the shield hero too begin with. Then her sadistic personality and desire to have power and position over people causes her to try and permanently secure Naofumi at the undisputed bottom. This is otherworldly important to the story because being pressured by the reigning religion alone is not enough to push Naofumi over the edge to gain the cursed series. It is a 'punishment' that is unrecognizable for someone from another world... but rape? THAT is a punishable offense that anyone, especially our heroes, could understand hating someone for. The rape charge also not only fully separates Naofumi from the people who blindly follow gossip, but it also causes the other heroes to separate from him as well... leaving him isolated, alone, and poisoned by blame, misguided trust, and hostility. This poison slowly seeps into him permeating every part of his soul. If he never found Raphtalia he would without a doubt have become the very person that the Church of the Three Hero's wanted him to be.

Naofumi has to give these things to people in order to be strong, in order to survive, but they were so completely shattered in him from the onset that he needed someone, Raphtalia, to believe in him and too mend his faith in himself and society. Hey i dont mind being spoiled but can someone explain the cursed series a bit more since its gonna be in the next ep in the anime like does the other heroes have the cursed series a well and are their different from Naofumi or the same?
The World Ender , so I might not be perfect in my understanding of the manga, but in my knowledge Naofumi is the only hero that activates the Curse Series, mostly since he is the only one to go through really any major emotional turmoil in which he gives up on the world and goes into a place where there is no ‘light’. From what I can tell the Curse series, at least the one affecting Naofumi, is that it brings out the opposite effect that is ‘natural’ or ‘right’ for the hero’s artifact by taping into the ‘demon-like’ emotions of our MC. For Naofumi that means that the curse series is an offensive attack that goes against the purely defensive nature of his shield; probably partly due to this and the fact his emotions of mistrust, hatred, self loathing, etc. are amplified or singled-out while using the shield he does go into a berserker type mode when using the shield. This mode is seen in the opening as the red eyed and red striping veined Naofumi. In the manga the curse series shield is generally portrayed as a manifestation of Naofumi’s more dangerous feelings and therefore controlling the anger and blind rage of the shield is a huge plot arc, since it is technically one of the only truly powerful offensive moves he ends up possessing. He tends, at least in the manga, to use the shield more frequently as a final shot or final effort to defeat an enemy or when he is falling to the enemy because of his defensive nature and is forced to endure alone/ with a struggling Raphtalia (since while as great as she is, she is not a hero) because the other 3 heroes become like inexperienced puppies not getting their way when waves 2-onward challenge their perfect strategies for winning again the boss. If this is or is not helpful please let me know and I will try to explain better.

But from what I've read, while the LN is vastly different, the end result is likely the same.

Well in canon the reason why the heroes are needed is that even if one of them gets killed, the level of all the monsters in the wave (and the world though I'm not sure about this) rises exponentially. So if any of the heroes die the wave becomes way more lethal. That's why Glass an co. were so bent on trying to eliminate the heroes so that the remaining ones get overwhelmed by the wave due to the increased difficulty. And as for Myne yeah in LN she gets off with a slap on her wrist cause killing her will cause an uproar in the kingdom but read the WN if you want to taste the sweet sweet vengeance on Myne though it sours off when the finale happens but it get's better again XD

Myne's motivations for causing the duel between Naofumi and Motoyasu are much more sinister in the novels. See in chapters 76-80 it's revealed that hatred against demihumans in Melromarc is so bad that any demihuman who is out without a slave-crest is immediately hunted down and terminated or sold to slavery. Demihumans with a slave crest may have it bad, but at least they have some sort of lawful protection against termination, since they are considered "property". By undoing Raphtalia's slave-crest, Myne intended to remove that protection. She didn't want to free Raphtalia, she wanted to *kill* Raphtalia.
Motoyasu is nothing more than a "useful idiot" to Myne i.e. someone who takes her word and does what she wants without questioning her motives or even if what she says is remotely plausible. She doesn't really care for him and doesn't really like him. It's just that out of the three other cardinal heroes, he is the easier to manipulate. Keep that in mind as it plays an enormous part later in the series.
Also, Myne becomes a much more despicable character once you find out that Naofumi isn't the first one she falsely accuses of rape (also, he is not going to be the last). Remember that the Melromarc Kingdom is a matriarchy and any attempts of sexual assault towards a woman are punishable by death. Also remember that Naofumi only got away with his life because he was one of the four cardinal heroes. Which means that plenty of other men got accused by Myne just for the lolz and she watched them die, presumably after stealing their funds and their equipment. She is not only a serial false-rape accuser, she is a serial *killer*.
Finally, Myne is based on someone the author actually knew. Kind of makes you wonder if the author was betrayed in a similar way, like Naofumi.

All 4 heros are good people in their own way, it's just that the Spear hero has a major weakness that Myne can capitalize on - the other two, not so much. There’s actually an event in the manga that shows how deep his hatred runs.
Spoilers.
When the second wave hits the Ren Itsuki and Motoyasu are very unsuccessful repelling the wave.
While Naofumi on the other hand was the only one strong enough to fight back despite the other 3 heroes having ranked up and Naofumi being forbidden from ranking up by the king.
The king summons Naofumi to the throne room solely to interrogate him on how he got so strong and to share his secrets for the sake of the kingdom.

The other heroes have basically zero moral obligations and are only doing it for rewards because they think it's a game despite them all dying in seriously fatal manners with almost 0 chance of survival. Even in the RPGs I play, I have hard moral obligations that are difficult to ignore, I can't unalive any halfway decent characters without feeling bad unless that's the point of my character like an assassin. All 4 of them are heroes and the only one with moral obligations is Naofumi.
This seems absolutely ridiculous, just because it offends people, we're supposed to pretend false accusations NEVER happen. Some people need to get a life.

When you think about it, it's actually rather hilarious that these same people didn't throw nearly as much of a stink about past female villain characters who have done arguably worse things in other well-known anime titles. Medusa Gorgon from Soul Eater tried to drown the world into madness, which is basically destruction, and experimented on her own child. Kiryuuin Ragyu did the exact same horrible things, but with two daughters. And then we have side-villain characters like Lust from the Full Metal Alchemist series who won't hesitate to seduce a man with her body and then murder him five minutes after. Long story short - Female characters can and will do horrible things and they do exist.

I for the love of me can't remember where I read it, but somewhere I read that the reason she's the way she is, is because she apparently has a fragment of "the goddess of chaos's" soul inside of her or something. Can't find any information to back it up. But it could explain a lot about her disgusting and pretty much cartoonishly villain behavior. I mean she does so much fucked up shit in the future of the series and it honestly makes you wonder how a single person can possibly be SO evil. I mean she sells one of her fellow female party members into sex slavery.

I can not agree with you more. Like I had a similar experience happen to me at a workplace and man was that a horrible experience, but I was so lucky to have my other co-workers come out and support me and believe that I was innocent. That kinda shit happens sometime and it sucks but having even the slightest of support and trust from your peers really makes a difference because just having people stand with you through tough times can take a lot of the stress off of you knowing that walking in next morning you won't feel alienated. I think my favorite part of the series so far (i've only been watching the anime) is when the king tries to rip Naofumi off after saving the village. Despite both the sword and bow hero not liking him, they make the king give him his share for protecting the village.

I think if you take gender out of it, and look primarily at how shield hero is isolated due to shaming and assumptions about qualities he has as an individual AND most importantly, his "worthiness" in their society based on these qualities as a shield wielder (qualities that he despite all his desires, cannot change) the manga does give a really broad perspective of what it's like for any victims of isolation, inequality based on broader societies perceptions of what a "hero" (or irl... a cis-male or cis-female or trans-male or trans-female or non-binary, etc) should be. It does suggest that qualities that are desirable by the masses are directly linked to perceptions of those individuals as an ideological construct - but using the construct of a "hero" not gender or other personal, individual identifiers. The only way societies negative perception of worth and level of respect changes in the anime is through Naofumi earning the respect of people gradually, by performing multiple acts of sacrifice, humility and those that uphold the human dignity of others - often still at a cost to himself.
Basically, the world is unfair and will judge people based on stereotypical perceptions of what is "normal/ desirable"... but this show can honestly be seen to demonstrate that yes, some individuals do have it easier by winning approval, acceptance or understanding simply because they fit stereotypical moulds of assumed desirable characteristics. But at least in the anime, those same characters who simply declare entitlement and respect because of those qualities (like the other 3 "heroes" and a number of the less desirable characters in the anime/manga) are shown that they don't necessarily maintain that privilege or high respect through personal characteristics alone (e.g. with the villagers).
People constantly need to work on understanding each other, improving themselves and recognise that positive actions change perceptions - Not the use of shaming, pushing blame or going around starting arguments with anyone who disagrees with you or doesn't perceive you in the way you should be perceived.

The character herself was nicely written as really a villain in many ways though the west their SJW are naïve in a way things like false rape accusations do happen and could no matter the country even in my own country I think there are some just don't remember them. Wow, Truth Hero, that was an incredibly accurate assessment of Myne. I originally just assumed that her character played as a sort of dynamic foil for Raphtalia/Filo who were kind, loyal, and trustworthy to Naofumi. That Myne was supposed to be the pure ruthless evil of our story that you just accepted and didn't really have any rational reasoning for, but now I see it differently. You are completely right... The reigning religion of the region is the Church of the Three Hero's, to which Myne fully believes in (whether it is true faith or just an excuse to be ruthless I don't know, but the purpose is there) which causes her to look down on the shield hero too begin with. Then her sadistic personality and desire to have power and position over people causes her to try and permanently secure Naofumi at the undisputed bottom. This is otherworldly important to the story because being pressured by the reigning religion alone is not enough to push Naofumi over the edge to gain the cursed series. It is a 'punishment' that is unrecognizable for someone from another world... but rape? THAT is a punishable offense that anyone, especially our heroes, could understand hating someone for. The rape charge also not only fully separates Naofumi from the people who blindly follow gossip, but it also causes the other heroes to separate from him as well... leaving him isolated, alone, and poisoned by blame, misguided trust, and hostility. This poison slowly seeps into him permeating every part of his soul. If he never found Raphtalia he would without a doubt have become the very person that the Church of the Three Hero's wanted him to be.

@@TruthHero Exactly! The author of the manga so beautifully created Naofumi's pain as one of necessity. Trust, Faith. Naofumi has to give these things to people in order to be strong, in order to survive, but they were so completely shattered in him from the onset that he needed someone, Raphtalia, to believe in him and too mend his faith in himself and society. That they were both worth saving.

The World Ender , so I might not be perfect in my understanding of the manga, but in my knowledge Naofumi is the only hero that activates the Curse Series, mostly since he is the only one to go through really any major emotional turmoil in which he gives up on the world and goes into a place where there is no ‘light’.
From what I can tell the Curse series, at least the one affecting Naofumi, is that it brings out the opposite effect that is ‘natural’ or ‘right’ for the hero’s artifact by taping into the ‘demon-like’ emotions of our MC. For Naofumi that means that the curse series is an offensive attack that goes against the purely defensive nature of his shield; probably partly due to this and the fact his emotions of mistrust, hatred, self loathing, etc. are amplified or singled-out while using the shield he does go into a berserker type mode when using the shield. This mode is seen in the opening as the red eyed and red striping veined Naofumi.
In the manga the curse series shield is generally portrayed as a manifestation of Naofumi’s more dangerous feelings and therefore controlling the anger and blind rage of the shield is a huge plot arc, since it is technically one of the only truly powerful offensive moves he ends up possessing.
He tends, at least in the manga, to use the shield more frequently as a final shot or final effort to defeat an enemy or when he is falling to the enemy because of his defensive nature and is forced to endure alone/ with a struggling Raphtalia (since while as great as she is, she is not a hero) because the other 3 heroes become like inexperienced puppies not getting their way when waves 2-onward challenge their perfect strategies for winning again the boss.
