If you're in the physical media hobby and mainly doing so at "in-store" Target, where have you been for the past few years....physical media isn't dead, we have all moved on other places as consumers. It's like beating a dead horse at this point.

Physical Media will never go away completely, it will just get expensive and become as more a specialty. However, I don't like streaming media as it has been taken ownership away from your original purchase. I would not be surprised if purchased streaming will go entirely as a subscription, they can't do this with physical. I'm going to start getting back into physical and setting up my own media server.

It may go away but more people are getting into physical media, so I don't see that happening for years. Streming services are getting more predatory than cable was and not finding what you want to watch without paying extra to rent on the streaming sites you already pay for.

I hate shopping online. I like to inspect my products before purchasing.
I had to order The Addams Family 4K five times and Blade Runner 2049 4K six times, before I got copies that weren't damaged.
Retailers keep shipping items in boxes or bags without any packaging materials.
Bose shipped me a $200 speaker, that is only available on their website, in a bag without any packaging material. I'm going to waste their money, having them ship me that speaker, until I receive one that isn't damaged.

Here in the UK we're really lucky to have HMV which has a wide selection of movies both online and in-store. I got into HMV once a month to pick up the movies I'm going to watch that month, both new movies, boutique and classics etc.
But I've always been largely an online shopper since early 2000. It's always been the case that retail never really carried anything but the most popular releases in store in the UK. The exception is dedicated stores like HMV.
I'll buy in person if I can, if not, I order online.

I think the main reason this blew up so big was because the original article was vague enough to the point that people thought physical video games were being removed from stores. That’s a whole other issue but the Target statement had to clarify that video games were not affected by this at the moment.

I just went to Target yesterday, they’re still selling physical media, yes it’s only one aisle of movies and music, but they have new movies and some special edition blu rays for classic movies, I think people need to calm down and support physical media. Target’s electronic department is reduced as well, because it’s not a big part of their overall revenue. I bought two DVDs because of BOGO sale for Across the Spider Verse and Barbie, that my cousin wanted on DVD.

It sucks that fred meyers stopped selling cds. When it comes to music, I always support and buy physical media and the same thing applies to movies and video games. I still buy cds, cassette tapes and mini discs at vintage stores and even thrift stores. Fred Meyers selection of movies went from having a large section of movies to a very tiny section of movies in the electronics development. There are 2 target locations in seattle that closed permanently due to crime and theft. The crime and theft has affected alot of stores in person like fred meyers and target. Crime and theft have even affected online shopping even when customers are getting the packages that they ordered from amazon are being stolen. Shopping in stores are more reliable and secure compared to shopping online since there are alot of risk that are known for shopping online. On amazon they were charging $45 for the same 12 pack of soda from fred meyers. I'm from seattle, sugar tax is already required for items that affect the tax related to sugar. At Fred Meyers, the sugar tax is $1.50 for a 2 liter of soda and the sugar tax applies to energy drinks like monster and red bull and even sports drinks like gatorade and powerade. Sugar tax applies to all fast food places like mcdonalds and wendys. All the costco locations in seattle replaced all the sodas with sugar with diet versions like diet pepsi. I think costco decided to replace the regular sodas for the diet versions because they are required to charge sugar tax. Most likely it will upset the large majority of costco customers being charged for sugar tax on soda since the food court at costco is cheap as long as the customers have a membership since costco mandated the customers show there membership to buy food. All the costcos no longer accept cash since the food has to ordered from the machine and the machine only accepts cards and I still pay with cash. There are even businesses that went completely cashless and only accept card payments even though they are people that still pay with cash. With cash, there is no card skimmers to deal with that has happened when paying for stuff with cards only. Places like 711 and the atm machines at the banks are known for having card skimmers even though using cards are convenient but not very secure since they be easily hacked and replaced with card skimming machines.

When I was really starting to become a serious collector Target with my go-to and around that time they just completely got rid of it and replaced it with makeup. I tend to forget about Target but I'm going to try to check them out occasionally. But the physical media is dying videos are kind of getting old because their predictions have not come true. And as long as there's collectors around there's going to be physical media especially from these boutique labels. Poisonous frustrating for me is seeing releases coming out at 35 or $40. 10 to 15 is the sweet spot for Blu-ray. 20 Topps. And 2025 is the sweet spa for 4K and 30 tops.
It's really disappointing when I see releases of old ass movies for $27.00 with no extras on Blu-ray.

Which way would provide better financial support for physical media? On one hand, when buying directly from companies' respective shops/stores such as Arrow, Criterion, Gruv, Kino, Shout, etc., they earn more royalties. On the other hand, when buying from major retailers such as Amazon, Target, and Walmart, Arrow, Criterion, Kino, Paramount, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Universal, Warner, etc. would keep supplying to them as long as there is demand.

I knew a physical media collector who passed away, and his kids threw many hundreds of discs into the dumpster. Didn’t even bother trying to sell them or give them away. When I asked why, they said DVDs, Blu-rays, and CDs are dead. Every one just streams now. Apparently some people really do look at collections we have spent years building as nothing more than garbage that is in the way. Hard to hear, but that’s the way some people, especially young people, view it.

I have nothing against ordering online (I still love doing it along with indoor retail stores) but I hate how sites like Amazon, ebay, Mercari and other shopping sites overgouging their prices. If they lower it down more often, it would be affordable.

Well the only concern with target is that they shrunk their dvd, bluray, and 4k section even more just within the last month. 2 years ago they got rid of the checkout stand shelves that had some titles. then last year they got rid of the stand by the gift cards. Then this year they reduced it to 3 or 4 shelves by electronics, but last month they reduced it to 1 shelf and that is almost almost empty now. a 50 percent reduction in space from the end of 2023 to april 2024 was pretty noticeable. Thats what prompted people to say target was done. In early march i was able to see over 125 titles on 4 shelves. and yesterday that same target have one shelf with like 40 total titles.

Exactly Best buy getting out of physical media was dumb in my opinion but Target doesn't seem like the place to go other than it's a store like Walmart that has everything.
I think Best buy I should have went in further with physical media and had more boutique labels represented. And really they should have had the Best buy like their name. In my opinion Best buy has become a joke. They hold a special place in my life because I used to buy CDs there and then movies. And it's a cool place to look around electronics. But I have no reason to go there unless there's something specific that I want. Kind of like radio shack back in the day. I only go there if I need a special wire.. plus with the internet nowadays it's hard to find a reason to go anywhere. Except for grocery stores.

Target never does any kind of displays for their movies, it’s completely bare, like they don’t care, if you don’t care, you don’t get the sales. It’s like having this brand new model car that just showed up at the dealership, and you have it hidden in behind cubicles and plants. Then you’re like why isn’t this car selling.
Follow Best Buys promotion of products, as soon as you walk in there’s a big display for new releases. I have to walk all the way to the back of the store, just to buy a movie I want. The clothes and make-up are right up front though.

As much as I don't want to see physical media removed from stores, as a collector who has a giant collection of movies, it makes me excited because the value of my collection will go up. I did most of my collecting of rare oops before COVID times hit. I've already seen some of my collection increase in value. Most recently MGM stopped making physical media in 2022. They sell only digital on Amazon now. A lot of my movies are not on streaming services. Ive had to start collecting bootlegs for shows that never even made it to physical media like 90s goosebumps complete series or the 80s Freddy's nightmares series for example. Etsy is a good start there. How do you feel about bootlegs and do you have any?

But, by your own estimates, even if you multiplied physical media sales by 10x (rolling back the clock a number of years)...it was NEVER 'as profitable' (or at least as big a portion of their sales) as their other hardlines.
The disproportionate 'pull back' of physical media is directly (I believe) a backroom payola from streamers like Netflix, Disney+, etc. to accelerate the destruction of the physical media market.

Ya, your a little late to the party, but still nice to see your face and hear your voice in a new video. :)
It will be interesting to see how Ai impacts the existence of brick and mortar stores in the future. Actually, I'm optimistic we could see some kind of revival or resurgence of brick and mortar stores some time in the early to mid 2030s. I also believe we could see something similar with physical media (of all types) in an age of "on-demand" abundance (aka: in a Post Scarcity society). Want a music CD that has been out of print for 23 years? No problem, just put in a request for it with your local artificial super intelligence and it prints the CD in some vast south American mega-factory and ships it to your door within a week, all for the meager price of $4.00. Don't laugh, I'm pretty sure it's coming.
