A lot of younger movie fans have seen slip covers from their first Disney dvds and blurays and just treated it like extra packaging to trash. So those are the types of people asking these questions and why slip covers matter. A video like this informed me of one thing I hadn't known. The first pressing mark on the Lionsgate steelbooks. I don't collect them in particular, so I had no idea.

I like the look and feel of slipcovers and try to always buy them over the ones without slips. My only complaint is when online retailers like Amazon don’t tell you if your getting a slip or not. I just want to know what I’m paying for.

simple answer, you want slipcovers, buy during the first print run, not hard to work out, if you wanted the movie and slip that badly, you would buy on day one of release or very soon there after

@@thesmf1210 that’s not true at all, for example if you bought the lost boys on 4K from the uk, you never got a slipcover with it at all? In the us maybe but in the uk you didn’t get one, so the problem still 100% stands because buyers of the first run and/or pre orders still did not know if they was getting a slipcover or not?! Some suppliers hold the slipcovers and sell them individually on eBay and other places for premium £$€, I get what your trying to say dude and fully respect it but I don’t think it’s so “simple” at all

I usually only go out of my way for slipcovers if I know I love the movie already or if the art is unignorably pretty.
The thought of someone tossing out the slipcover of something like Arrival or Inception (which I adored) takes a week off my life time though.

I've noticed a lot of 3D Blu-rays tend to have slipcovers with a lenticular 3D print of the art on the case. And because of that I decided that for every 3D Blu-ray I I buy I'll only purchase an eBay listing of it if it comes with the slipcover because it's always really cool to see the case art in 3D.

I personally love skip covers. Here in the UK, popular store HMV have released titles such as John Wick 4 and Scream 6 with their own exclusive art slips which stand out from the standard release. Their Scream 6 red slip cover was particularly good as it was the same price as standard but also included very high quality lobby cards.

My son used to work at Target a decade or 2 ago and the DVDs with the slipcovers wouldn't fit in their theft protection plastic cases, so they would take them off and throw them away. There was also a local video store that would order say 10 copies of the new releases and would then pull off and throw out the slipcovers. Hard to believe these days.
One thing you didn't cover that I feel deserves a mention is the special slipcovers that Walmart gets on catalog titles for special endcap promotions. They had the Deadpool covers on a selection of Fox films like Logan and War for the Planet of the Apes. They've also recently had the minimalist red and white and black Valentine horror films like My Bloody Valentine. Currently they have some "Wanted Poster" art on western films for Father's Day like Hateful Eight and Django. Some of these are really nice looking.

My personal favorite slipcover I own is for The Man Who Fell to Earth steelbook. Being a huge Bowie fan, it’s awesome to see the slipcover with the iconic Aladdinsane lightning bolt that slides over Bowie’s face on the actual case.

For me, slipcovers are only really a big deal if it is alternative artwork and the regular packaging includes a reversible sleeve showing an original one sheet. When Scream Factory put out those first few titles and I was able to have the best of both worlds in one release (new and original art displayed simultaneously), my Blu Ray collecting skyrocketed.

I otherwise don't care about slipcovers, I've even thrown them away in the past. But... the first few GKIDs blu-rays I got had slipcovers and now I am obsessed that ALL of my GKIDs movies have slipcovers so that they all line up and look uniform on my shelf. I don't recommend being so obsessed.

FYI they're also called "O rings" by people in the industry. They originally were on DVDs because they make the artwork look sharper than the version under the plastic on the actual disc case.
Unless there is something unique on it (say it's lenticular) I always toss them. The vast majority of my BDs are in CD jewel cases to save space and my DVDs are on spindles sorted alphabetically.

In terms of rarity from big studios if anyone is wondering, Sony releases and Fox releases (from Disney) are typically the slipcovers that go OOP after a couple of months while other releases typically have slipcovers for up to a year

I used to throw out the slipcovers (or also called O-cards) or old Blu-Rays because I didn't know that they were needed. Back then, late 2000's, early 2010's, a lot of the studios would put a different artwork on the case itself, so my Iron Man and Star Trek 09 Blu-Rays are different. Now of course, I save them all in case I want to sell it.

Criterion Blu-ray discs often feature some small print after the copyright words to indicate if the disc is 'First printing'. Here in the UK we often give slip covers the name 'O band' to differentiate them from 'J' covers or the 'belly band' as used by Indicator on their box set collations.

In my opinion, slipcovers are essentially an overly-praised piece of cardboard. It’s actually wild to think about. I would much rather have just the amaray with a disc and booklet inside (if it provides that in the first place) talking about the film. This kinda stuff has always been funny to me because I see people that go nuts over slipcovers meanwhile some people can’t care any less about a slipcover. People are usually really on board with them or are just very apathetic towards them lol, me fitting in with the latter group mentioned. It really is just a ‘to each their own’ thing but people should make sure to appreciate the films as well! That’s why we are all in this hobby in the first place, the love of film. People should remember that.

The slipcover obsession is real in most cases. I was hoping you would mention Solo and what happened with that release, 2 different slip covers one being more limited than the other and that was the only Star Wars movie to have that problem. The rest were easy to get. Solo slip remains high on the aftermarket sites 100 + typically.

I always wondered why some movies had slip covers and some don’t. I was too embarrassed to ask a stupid question. More so, I used to look forward on the search of movies with slipcovers. Not so much now. Slip covers get banged and tossed around; the slipcovers of the dvd blu ray 4K and after reinserting causes wear and tear. In addition, I remember back in the 80s and early 90s cd’s came in cardboard long boxes with the exact art. It was soon discontinued after complaints of filling landfills. So why aren’t slipcases discontinued? Makes perfect sense if you think about it.

Personally, I've never given a rip about slipcovers. I keep them when I get new movies now but I've probably recycled hundreds of them over the years. One thing that I don't like about them is that they make cases take up slightly more room on the shelf. If they always had alternate artwork, I'd definitely have been more keen on getting them.

Jeff, try to find what retailers (brick-N-mortar and on-line) get first dibs on first pressings (best chance of playing without glitches). I've had the worst luck with play-ability and/or lowish bit-rate, black crush when there is a blue "Made In" stamp on the cellophane wrapper - you know the one.

I thought slipcovers existed to make the packaging look better, the print on the slipcover is usually of a higher quality than the print on the thin sheet of paper stuffed behind the plastic film of the box.
Or in the case of steelbook editions, the slipcover has all the information printed on it, which isn't printed of the steelbox. I usually throw slipcovers in the box for recycled paper.

Only time I made sure to get one of these was for the Best Buy 4k steelbook of Reservoir Dogs with the removable ear slip. That's only because I'm a huge QT fan and because that was a big part of the movie. If there were more creative designs like that, for movies I liked I would probably get more into it.

I'm a super picky collector- if it doesn't have a slipcover then I'll generally just refuse to purchase it. It makes me kinda sad because even certain boutique sets never have slipcovers or outer casings to begin with (as is the case with a solid half of Criterion's offerings).
By the way, what is that Saw display behind you? Is that a special edition, box set or a collectible of some kind?

    Hmm.
I knew what hardcovers were, but I didn't know about it being a first run release thing.
That does explain why slipcovers are very inconsistent when buying online, as you never really know what run their from.
In my anime Blu-ray collection, it's a total crapshoot. All of them do, but a couple don't.
Mostly it seems like the older series have slipcovers more often in my collection.

Great explanation, Jeff! It is hard to describe to people outside of the hobby (or even in the hobby) the importance and the draw of something like a slipcover. Likening it to a dust jacket and an indication of having obtained a piece in its initial print run really hits the bullseye. But beyond that, I do appreciate the aesthetic of how they look on the shelf. I do appreciate labels like Vinegar Syndrome for reasons you mentioned. I also appreciate smaller retailers like Orbit DVD that explicitly mark their listings with a “w/Slipcover” label. It is a big help to collectors such as ourselves. I sometimes have to remind myself that the disc contents are in fact the same whether the slipcover is included or not. Sometimes that burn of missing out on an LE stings for a while. Haha! But it’s all part of the high of collecting and getting those highly sought after items. It’s a wonderful hobby and community to be a part of.

You’re one of the only content creators who focuses majority on physical media who goes out of your way to emphasize and stress that “Hey, I prefer the 4K, but if all you got is Bluray or even dvd? Who cares, collect, if it works for you it works for you!” I’ve seen some content creators who make you feel bad if you have one pixel less than the highest quality 8K, 10K whatever😂 (I’m not counting people like Daisuke Beppu or 20th and 21st movies, who I feel focus more on THE FILM and the tech specs are more an after thought for them). I do really like to have the slipcover, if it has unique features such as shinyness, sparklyness, embossing, different artwork from the inner case, etc. I just wish that they wouldn't make it soooo much more difficult to get a slipcover if you don't buy the movie RIGHT away at release... However, *not* getting a slipcover absolutely does NOT mean that I won't buy the physical copy of that movie I want.

It’s part of there game. They have to give incentive to buy it right away at full price and use FOMO. If they didn’t most people would just put it on the back burner “I’ll get it later” or wait for a sale. They got us on the hook 😂

Slipcovers used to be on DVDs and Blu Rays, but they’re mostly redundant since it’s kind of wasteful since it’s excessive packaging! I just care about the hard casing for the disc, since a lot of movie disc cases are made from recyclable plastic that don’t age well and they get easily damaged!

Some people like the way things look and if they look better they prefer it. You don't care about the appearance. A bluray with a slip case always looks better.

For myself, they're worth having if there's alternate artwork on the case (assuming I like the art on the slipcover). It's just nice having that extra little bit of artwork. That being said, I mean "worth it" if I'm getting it during the initial run. I really can't see myself dropping a hundred bucks for an out-of-print slipcover.

Australia cheaps out on packaging big time. In the past few years almost all major boxsets have been multiple cases in a cheap cardboard sleeve. Then look at the exact same release in the US and it comes in a nicely designed single case eg Hitchcock 4K collections, The Godfather 4K set etc. yet we pay pretty much the same price - sometimes more - for an obviously cheaper set.
