I still buy Blu Ray DVDs because the picture quality is better than streaming.
Same, and because I don’t want to subscribe to 100 streaming services to have access to the movies I want to see
And if you're network connection goes down, you're screwed unless you have DVDs.
Still buy movies myself as a lot of movies are not available streaming. Bout the dvd of beyond the rave and the movie catholic boys as neither are available streaming in the UK. There's extras on beyond the rave I want to watch as well
Consistent too. No dips when internet isn’t as strong.
@@kfw9257 facts
When society collapses, people with DVD collections will be treated like royalty.
That’s what I’m saying the more we move to the future The people that stream will never own nothing and ims start laughing while movie and music collectors wiil always have their CDs 😊 and blue rays to watch them anytime they want 😅
All I know is that if my Wi-Fi goes out, I can still watch a DVD, it's also a one time price, Plus, if I buy a DVD and a year later they decide to "vault it" it won't matter, I got it already
As a 18 year old I grew up with DVD/blue rays to this day I still don't understand streaming not a fan of it.... I'ma hardcore blue ray collector
That outlet representing 45% of physical media sales is Wal-Mart, NOT Best Buy. Error right out of the gate. Cmon, do better.
This news sucks. Streaming sucks. Physical media forever.
Amen!
Im really sad now :(
Physical media is being *produced* more and more. Casual viewers will switch to streaming and don't buy from BB but boutique labels are rocketing in popularity... and Disney is switching from "no physical ever" to "we're going to make the profit that's obviously there for the non-casual viewer".
Physical is nowhere near dying, though it is, as always, evolving and changing.
I’m not sure where you get your information from, but all the data shows that physical media sales drop exponentially year over year. It’s not a matter of opinion, it is a statistical fact.
Still there are more releases every year, even if sales are going down, so it is still is profitable. A lot of boutique releases, and a lot of bootlegs. @@johncampea
@@johncampeaextremely ignorant and uniformed take. The boutique Blu-ray market is booming. You don’t need to delete another comment because you can’t admit to being wrong😉 do real research next time
Digital is nice when you wanna rent a movie, other than that I always buy my movies/games physical. I don’t like the idea of all my entertainment being “protected” by a password.
I like physical stuff I hate this “streaming” crap
And Best Buy is going out of business in January 2, 2024!!! 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
It was bound to happen with all these streaming services. But there are many people who are nostalgic when it comes to physical media such as DVDs, Blu Ray, 4K, etc. And a lot of times, the visual quality of physical media is much better than that of streaming. You can't have streaming as a collectors item whereas with physical media, you can.
Not surprised. The writing was on the wall.
You still online stuff like vinegar syndrome, arrow, kino, criterion and others
I remember back a decade or more ago when Best Buy's DVD\Blu-ray section was HUGE! Now it's just one isle with only recent releases.
I literally get 4k steelbooks from there all the time, the M3gan steelbook that just came out a couple days ago literally sold out two hours after the store opened on the day of release
No way Best Buy accounts for 45% of sales. There's so many on-line retailers and boutique sites and most collectors shop there now. Not to mention Amazon and Walmart probably make up a good chunk. They're 10% at most.
Correct, what was best buy total revenue/profits off of media, cause Walmart made $1B in profit in 2022 selling dvds, smdh
My Mother's uncle still has Kung Fu and Western 8mm Film Reels and Projector from the early 70s, My mum still has VHS player and tapes, I still have DVDs and 2 DVD players, My sister still has a cable box, my son has Subscription Apps of latest streaming services....I am curious what his kids will be having in the future....
Target has already started reeling back the amount of physical movies that are on shelves. Last week I went in and there was literally just one shelf with physical movies and tv shows where two weeks ago it was a couple of isles.
That was announced a month ago that that would happen
I wouldn’t exactly use Best Buy as a reliable barometer for the state of physical media. Best Buy has been shifting towards being more of a household appliance store over a media electronic store for years now.
Physical media will soon be mainly an online and specialty store based industry and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s also worth noting that new 4K disc titles have seen a huge increase. That wouldn’t be happening if they believed the medium was dead.
This sucks with the diminishing game stocks , DVD kept me going back to Best Buy , love having my video libraries.
Physical media will make a comeback just like vinyl is really popular now.
It's still niche. Vinyl is kinda unique with the snap crackle pop of the needle. Then fidelity improved going to tape then CD then MP3 and now streaming is audio purity.
In few years probably so because streaming is overwhelming. I buy what I like I buy it once nobody can take I’ve always like the in between the combo or buying cd and putting on my drive take it with me on my iPod.
Best Buy makes up only 4% of media movie sales (according to a recent media play article) . I think the market will get past it.
Screw all these stores that will no longer sell physical media.
Ok, Good luck finding media on streaming because media on streaming is less likely to stay and more likely to be deleted. Don't think that the new movies and new shows and new specials are not going to be deleted too. All media new and old are more likely, no matter what it is, to be deleted and more likely to be hacked by threats.
I still prefer to buy physical copies of movies and shows. I live in a rural area where high speed internet isn’t widely available. There are lots of places in this country that don’t have access to high speed internet like cable or fiber optic, you’re limited to satellite internet that runs on data plans that are expensive.
Physical media forever 😎😎😎😎it will never be a dying format to me ima keep buying them u til I die Let the lazyyyyy people stream their cheap ass music and movies on their cheap cell phones 😂😂😂🥲🥲🤣🤣 while true music lovers have our collection of CDs 💿 and blue rays 😅
They will go out of business after this decision. I guess thats what they want 😅
Clearance Sale for Best Buy for Boxing Day this year. I only have to complete a few franchises for my collection
I live in Canada; half of the steelbook editions never make it here other than exorbitant prices offered by resellers.
So, Best Buy is dead to me.
I buy mine from walmart but sucks that people are so suckered in to digital copies of movies which you dont actually own…and if stores do stop selling then i hope amazon still does
It will trust me Amazon makes slot of money on movies and physical sales the hell with Best Buy
eBay will always sell physical media
I will ALWAYS prefer to own something tangible, that is mine. I own most streaming services as well. But they all keep jumping up in price and take content away on dime. Internet can be unreliable and buffer. And quality and sound are bo where near 4k blu ray or even blu rays. Streaming needs to cool off. Over saturated market and most streaming services are costing the companies money. Operating at a loss.
I like the library idea for shows/movies that are no longer profitable for their companies
*Wouldn’t the move to not sell physical media inherently remove any and all need to have physical locations? I know Blockbuster’s physical locations have been closed since forever, but this makes me feel like other companies like GameStop might move towards going fully digital and removing storefronts.*
This is why you must demand physical Media
An definitely don't buy ish from game stop, wtf lol
My whole 4K marvel dc collection of movies will soon be incomplete , I feel like throwing what I have so far in the bin and I’m from Australia so already marvels gone 😡
Just search now before 2024 to get it, also look me up I run a media Duplication service
f---- best buy, man.
I’d rather take physical media over digital
Target already phased out DVDs a week ago
They're still selling them online.
I miss buying physical media from Best Buy.
I have a question I’m from Australia and don’t know much about Americas physical media when best buy closes down is there any other shops there that sells movies ? 🤔 and if so do they have steelbooks for sale ?
Maybe a place like Target or Walmart. Might have to get it online.
Best Buy is not making any money not because fisical media is not selling well or the only 2 dollars each DVD they sell .. is because the have terrible costumer service . And competition Costco gives you better insurance for electronics and appliances. And fisical media is the only reason I keep buying at best buy
You know, all this sucks. I mean all this licensing shit and everything. I’m sure there might have been but was there fees when local channels would show old movies? Or reruns? Did the big networks have to when they showed Superman or Star Wars? There should always be a way to see movies that were made to be seen, if you like it or not. These times suck ass. For reals
Yes, in the old days local television would have to pay licensing fees to screen an old movie. Licensing fees have been a part of Hollywood since forever. Yes, these fees have increased over the years but that’s primarily due to the number of physical media and streaming companies vying for the same rights.
*Dollar Tree will take those disc*
Naww aomeba records will 😅
Its all Walmart and Amazon now. And GameStop of course. Target too for the time being.... but even they are phasing out as well too sadly. Sad times for us Gen X and Y'er collectors.
Target stop selling dvds and cds too, look it up, they'll only sell books and vinyl
@DjSegwon I still can go to my local Target to this day and get DVDs, Blu-rays and CDs.
Pirates are going to be the winner. I live in rural country and streaming is still rough. Also streaming is too expensive.
The same in ai vs writers its just time moving on. Same with stop motion cgi. Alot of stop motion workers got no work after jurassi. Park. Someone come and go thats life
My last two physical games that have own were LEGO Star Wars Skywalker saga for the switch and tiny Tina wonderland for Xbox one after that I have bought digital I own my first ever digital Pokémon game that is violet
So what happens when Xbox trys to pull the same crap Sony did with the ps3 server shutting down ,what about those games we brought on digital, they'd be gone if not for us complaining! That right there was the wake up call to continue to buy physical Media 😊
This is messed up. When Best Buy stops selling DVDs and things like that, the countdown to the end of the world begins.

Despite all the economic crisis this is still a good time to start up an investment
The rich see an economic crisis as a way of making more money that's why investing now will be wise
I am fortunate I made productive decisions about my finances that changed my life forever. I live in the US🇺🇸 with my family, bought my second house in April hoping to retire next year if things keep going smoothly for me. 💵💵
Inspiring! Thanks for the advice on how to invest in a healthy way as you are doing. I would really love to know how much work you did put in to get to this stage
I engage in various prolific investments by compound interest & leveraging and as well operating with an investment professional Mrs Brisa Richardson, so far I've attained returns of over $30k last month
Wow! Wow please is there any way to reach there services?
I mean they could sell vinyl
bestbuy said they are not selling and the steel books just where not moving in many many stores
there no need to worry we can all ways buy online not big deal we can all ways buy dvds in the areas we are living and that is a big + for us
many just do not know where too look , and walmart will stop dvds soon all so i dont think you got the word !!!
😢
Bruh I hate this
Welcome to the era of digital
As a Best Buy employee I can say (in my store at least) none of us are happy about this. We think it's a HORRIBLE decision.
I use Amazon and Target for some releases and occasionally Walmart but get most of my physical media from Best Buy for specific reasons so very unhappy about this(the online aspect really) since this is going ot create a hardship for me and in the long run will cost me more.
is there any way to send word to the higher ups?
im guessing not, if it hasn't already been tried
my condolences
I actually disagree with the conclusions here - physical media isn't dead, it's just becoming niche. It's important to remember that the retail sector itself has been in decline, so these big-box stores need to reorient to survive. Best Buy has reoriented toward appliances, TVs and big-ticket items. There will always be a physical media market for hardcore movie fans, collectors and home theater enthusiasts (we're seeing this now with physical media for music). The selection and quality of 4K Blu-ray has been improving every year with 2023 being an incredible year for must-have releases. Also consider that the "sugar rush" era of streaming might be over with higher prices, ads, and stingy content availability. The fallout from 2023 SAG and WGA strikes (including new residual payouts) will likely alter streaming's financial profile for studios, who may impose further changes to streaming's business structure that could negatively affect the consumer experience. I wouldn't be surprised if physical media sales stabilize or rebound a bit over the next five years.
Thank u finally someone got it right physical media will always be around not a lot of people have new cars and old cars still carry CDs players to buy them. New music is always produced on cd 💿 and we still have music stores around the world 🌎 like in Hollywood aomeba records
You raised the question of should Physical Media go away. The answer is no. There should be an outlet for physical media to exist. The fact that stores like Best Buy are ceasing sales of physical media in early 2024 will affect their long term business sales and profits.
Fewer and fewer people are buying physical media. People just don't want stacks of DVDs, and the very few who do aren't enough of a market to keep it going.
Media sales is a loss leader for retailers so no that doesn’t hurt them
I know fewer and fewer people are buying them and that's a shame b/c for the most part, the blu-rays or the 4K physical versions are the best quality versions outside of the theater. I sincerely hope it never dies.
I agree 100%.
Physical media is far better.
To watch streaming movies, u need to have internet… but sometimes internet is slow or not working at all; I had experience both. So yeah, I still and love buying/collecting physical Media.
Physical forever! There are still boutique labels cranking out bluray and 4k’s. There just moving to online sales with those boutique labels that the major studios license out to, to be able to release physical versions. Criterion, kino lorber, shout!, vinegar syndrome, 2nd site, and a few more out there. Plenty of physical media is still available for sure. I buy from those sites. As soon as target and Best Buy started ramping down the shelves with physical media. I find myself walking less and less into those stores.
Plenty is still left at the moment but what about when movie studios simply stop releasing their products via physical media and simply release everything digitally?
I bet one day pysical media is going to be like records they will make a comeback
I think it will be and currently is like vinyl but it will never go completely away
Record’s really never made a comeback
I want to own my things not have to pay a monthly fee
Exactly.
@@PJVids83 And suddenly people forget that the last 3 years we've had like multiple streaming services left and right.
Anything digital can be more easily taken away or lost. Banned episodes of TV shows are best preserved from old DVD releases.
Yes but two things happen. One the older the content the less its value and cost to maintain so studios are unlikely to take it away unless they're hit movies or shows. Second and more importantly most people don't want to watch old stuff they've seen before.
@@jonfreeman9682 with all the valid arguments and counter arguments, this is quite the dilemma.
Downloaded/pirated content can preserve
@@niftyskates85 it is very difficult for a lot of people including myself to find the best quality downloads for pirating media. Because sometimes they say the download will be the highest quality but then it's not.
Physical media will not die. It'll just evolve to be the niche that it is right now and companies like Arrow Video and Shout Studios will keep supplying the market, so as long as people like me and many others continue to support it. Physical media won't go away, it just won't be nearly as big as it was 10 or 20 years ago.
Ill never understand people like Campea being so against physical media.
It's going to blow up in their face.
In the next ten years something is going to happen that will cause people to shift back to physical. We've already seen the beginning of this with Discovery content being pulled from people's libraries on PlayStation
Get rid of all your physical media and all you have left is the ability to rent something from a company.
@@robzombie5928 exactly
Its probably been said already but my concern is the studios or platform's ability to take away or remove my digital content at any time even though i purchased the copy. The fact that you only purchase the license to watch and do not own the digital copy outright concerns me.
100% agree with you, i like digital but i buy physical of all my favourites too for this very reason.
Streaming is for renting, not to keep.
When your Dvd player exist until it goes, then what? If no physical media is being produced, then what's the point of producing dvd players or etc?
DVD players will last for centuries lmao ain't got nothing to worry about
4K Bku ray quality is infinitely better than streaming quality even "HD" streaming which looks and sounds like garbage
No. The blu ray version & the 4k resolution ten times better. Yes, the streaming service quality sucks ass.
Physical media still lives on just because Target and Best Buy are not selling physical media anymore does not mean it's dying they are just doing what is best for their business. We still have boutique labels that serve directly to the customers when it comes to physical media we just have to know where to find it. I don't trust streaming and digital where movies and tv shows can be edited and taken away at anytime
Physical media is dying though and it won't last forever though when so many people now prefer to buy things digitally instead of buying those things
Physically.
Exactly
I'm a physical media guy! Streaming never works right around here!
Streaming sucks. And this sucks physical media is so important for film preservation it's so sad
Very dumb and uninformed take here. Physical media will be around for quite some time. This dude is clearly not aware of the how well the boutique Blu-ray market is doing. They will stick around like vinyl records have
Yes physical media will always be around in some form but new films being made may not be released in physical form only digital the reality is DVDs will become pretty much obsolete just like how VHS has
Physical media till I die
Physical media for film won't ever fully die. Even in 2023 you can't duplicate the audio quality produced on a 4k disc digitally due to compression. There are so many boutique companies out there making awesome 4k releases that sell like crazy too. The market is there and people gladly pay high dollar for it. This move by Best Buy definitely is a big hit to the market though.
Physical media is not going to be around forever physical media will be dying out at some point.
I go to Best Buy about once a week to buy a couple of 4K discs (it's the only place I can really go get any in-store), this kinda sucks but I get it. As long as Amazon keeps selling Im ok.
there’s eBay also
Look, if your internet goes out, you can’t watch any of the movies. But at least you can still watch your physical copy offline.
Best Buy no longer selling physical media will simply mean increased sales elsewhere. Either boutique labels will publish more mainstream titles from studios who don't sell directly to the public, or those studios will provide a way for consumers to begin buying directly from them.
Ultimately the death of physical media depends entirely on whether or not consumers buy it, not who sells it.
Exactly. Also, how the hell will we own anything when even purchasing digital media and keeping it is contingent on the seller having access to its IP. One mistake and you lose that download and that film forever
In all honesty them getting rid of physical media won’t hurt them that bad because they will still have TVs computers and phones and that’s what the majority of people use now so it’s no real big loss.
Best Buy is 45% of the market, soon to be Zero Percent. Good move BB!
I look forward to Best Buy Blu-ray sales every Black Friday. Guess I’ll be staying home from now on.
I'm a physical media person, but it wouldn't bother me as much if streaming platforms weren't consistently dropping movies that aren't popular or because they are not being watched enough.
Good thing amazon has them still
Yeah Amazon is wayyyyy better anyways u could find anything there more than Best Buy old movies and CDs 💿
You said it was dead years ago and it’s still here😂😂
Physical media will always be around in some form just won’t be sold in the big box stores anymore and new release movies won’t be available in physical form especially 5 years from now
This is only partially true. Physical media are currently thriving on the collector's market.
Even Disney is now releasing Disney+ and Hulu exclusives on 4K Blu-ray.
And don't forget the current popularity of vinyl records. It began the same way.
Not a fan of needing the internet to watch my movies. Love physical. This stinks. Just left best buy actually, bought Talk to Me 😂😂...😢😢
There are some old movies and some rare stuff that you can only find on DVD.
ok now it sounds like best buy is purposely trying to single handedly kill physical media.
why completely eliminate it so dramatically, and online as well...
they're not selling as well, but they're still selling, i understand downsizing but this seems a little dramatic, like they have a vendetta or something lol
my main reason for going to best buy was for music movies games etc, i don't even know what to go there for anymore
The 100 dollar membership is why I shop less at Best buy now.
BB will be joining it's buddy Circuit City soon in retail store heaven.
Physical media is not dying it is becoming niche again, more physical media releases have come out this year than many years prior.
@@PJVids83the reality is DVDs will end up just like how VHS did still around but will only be available in thrift stores
Here’s my thing
For the so called permanence of physical media. I have lived through VHS, DVD, Blu Ray and now 4K. And by god a physical media snob will judge you if you don’t have the latest and greatest. I had to make the choice that this wasn’t what I was going to collect. Vinyl and books however have stood the test of time.
I still buy physical copies that bring digital codes that way I have both. Also as someone who isn't rich and lives check to check I been thru days where I had my Internet cut off but I had my DVDs to get me thru it
Walmart will probably become the biggest store that sells movies on discs in the future. Walmart is in every city big & small. Best Buy is not in every city. I am glad Kris mentioned Walmart.
I wish Walmart sells CDs 💿 that are not edited that’s always been the problem with them with music that’s why I go to target 🎯
Ebay is still the best place for dvds and great prices and free shipping
Yes eBay will always sell that stuff
I don’t think Physical Media will ever 100% die, but looks like everything will become manufacture on demand or supplied by boutique labels like Criterion Collection, Arrow, and Shout Factory.
At least target still sells CDs on newer music so basically Taylor swift CDs 💿 sell a lot on target 🎯
Fuck streaming
It's easy for non collectors to over emphasize about physical media being dead. They are so unaware of the outlets that we as collectors have with Shout/Scream Factory, Criterion, Kino Lorber, Second Sight, Umbrella, and a few others. Physical media is just shifting to more online ordering based markets. Things that these two are completely unaware of.
@@alwaysemployed656 Eh, they are basically saying that the end of physical media is near completely, hence the "nail in the coffin" comment they made. The issue isn't which stores are housing physical media going forward, it's the fact that since Best Buy is no longer going to be selling them, it seems to trigger "the end" of physical media as a whole! I'm saying that's not the case. Us collectors still have options as it's just shifting and we just have to adjust. The panel are clearly not collectors.
I am pretty sure Walmart is the biggest physical media seller
Correct.
Walmart sells alot. They have a great bargain bin where you can get older DVD movies for like $3 to $5. Cheaper than renting and what Best Buy sells for. New releases still go for $10 and higher. But it doesn't make sense to buy media anymore.
@@jonfreeman9682I don't like streaming I think it's stupid.... buying a physical copy means u can watch it no matter when and u can take it everywhere....
A sad day for people who care about video and sound quality.
Your source that Best Buy was the largest retailer for physical media was WRONG. Best Buy only sold 4 percent of the total discs sold. Walmart is clearly No. 1 with over 40 percent, Amazon at No. 2 with 18 percent, Target is No. 3 with 6 percent and Best Buy is No. 4. If you're going to report something you should have two sources to confirm any information you are going to tell your followers.
Sad day… I like physical media. Since streaming services keep raising their prices. It’s nice to put in a disc and watch a movie without too many commercials interrupting your movie.
