I saw this thumbnail and immediately thought “wait.. isn’t that Cassey’s skort? “ and lo and behold YEP it was! Not at all shocking. Usually Shein knocks off old/discontinued/ niche or unknown /foreign brands so nobody calls them out. I remember like last year they knocked off a Ma*rs (Japanese deadstock Agejo Gyaru) dress that was super popular within the Gal community literally EXACTLY. Same fabric, design, flairs, bows, straps, colors, print… it was so blatant that if you zoomed in you could literally SEE the ma*rs logo WHERE IT WAS ON THE OG DRESS. Not blurred or anything. It was crazy. It sucks that this happened to Cassey though! I absolutely adore her work and have bought from her brand a ton. I’ve been boycotting Shein because of their LONG list of issues. I’d absolutely love to see a style theory video on them absolutely tearing them to shreds though!
@@christianlabray8729 I was wondering if anyone else have a SHEIN ad pop up while watching this? I’m both glad I wasn’t the only one and peeved that it happened at all.

Heaps on this topic in the costube community - try Nicole Rudolph's excellent vid on the history of how we got to this fast fashion hell, or the Karolina Zebrowska vid that MatPat briefly highlighted, amongst others?
You should look into hot topic outright stealing artwork from online and printing it on their shirts and pins without permission! It’s definitely something that falls under copyright so I’ve wondered how they’ve gotten away with it.
You guys may have seen the “MA⚡️MA” shirts, my friend and her graphic artist came up with that design for her Shop Pink&Palm that helped fund resources for moms in crisis and Forever21 stole it first and then Shein and the rest of the world. Very sad, hers is still the best rendition, but she was so discouraged. She shut her shop down for now. She had other designs, hoping she comes back again. It’s horrible how these fast fashion brands steal everything.
One has really really research companies. Back in the 1980's if anything said "Made in China" on it, it meant it was a garbage knock off. The thing that happened in the 1980's was in the US and Canada non-profits lobbied to have a lot of regulatory protections, like environmental protections and other regulations implemented. They do that to this day. It's something of an ok practice as it's not considered stealing to take something else as long as it fits Chinese Laws
Blair would be an incredible choice for helping out with Style Theory videos - not just Shien, there's been several "guests" on the Corporate Casket they could pull from. I'd love to see it~
Or maybe a theory on how they started as a company drop shipping soap from The Soap Guy. Fr though the soap guy is the same as Dr squatch and prices are way cheaper
Would love an episode on if those new odd facial products actually do anything for your jaw and skin Like those ice rollers and jade stones that are supposed to move your jaw, do they actually do anything? Always wondered if it worked or was just a lie.
Here's my idea for a possible style theory: Is it actually better to dye your hair when it's dirty versus when it's clean? Bonus, does someone's hair type affect the results (e.g. thickness, texture, natural color)? I've definitely heard it a lot over the years but I'm not sure if it's true...
In my personal experience, my hair color grabs better when it's a day unwashed. Not too greasy, but it can't have a coating of conditioner on, either. It will depend on hair type for sure, though
If you are bleaching or using dyes that are permanent and have lifting agents like ammonia you should do it on oily hair. If you are dying with products that may or may not be permanent but do not have any harsh chemicals, like manic panic or directions, you need clean hair. Thickness, texture, natural hair colour and whether your hair is dyed or not also play a significant role for how long and what products you need for bleaching.
You guys should do a theory about women’s multiple products being used for hair/face vs the meme of guys using 42in 1 shampoo/conditioner and their hair looking great/their face being clear lol
We're talking about a lot of 'fast fashion' in one of my classes at school so if you did an episode on SHEIN work conditions that would save me a lot of essay research lol
Definitely make a video about how bad Shein is. On top of the OSHA violations, some of Shein’s products have also been found to contain dangerous amounts of lead.
Also, I've seen a lot of allegations of their clothes containing high amounts of lead. Amounts that aren't safe to be near, much less wear. Another great reason to look elsewhere for clothes
@@darladay4766 I believe that lead is used in the dye, so washing it out isn't possible. The articles I found say that about 1 out of 5 clothing items tested positive for lead and other chemicals that you probably shouldn't have a lot of exposure to.
@@renyanoel7413 that would be lots of leaching. I wasn't aware of how bad dyes were until after I leaned about things like bamboo being dumped in chemicals to make them soft enough for fabric, and that they don't all wash out. Can't even wear a natural cotton puff dress stapled on because they use chemicals on the cotton. Can't win
I feel so awful for Cassie. My sister and I have been following her for years and she's helped so many especially me, She doesn't deserve to be stolen from
I have shopped from shein, mainly because this company makes clothes for big humans like me and ships almost everywhere. Please cover the shein battle, and if you can mention this topics. I would like to know more on this topic. Thank you!
You should watch iilumenaughtii’s video on them. There do you need to be more options for plus sizes, but a company that exploits smaller artists and their workers is…. That’s just a tough pill to swallow, man.
I first noticed this when I still shopped at Shein and the strawberry dress was really popular because someone had made their own on tiktok. Suddenly it was all over Shein.
This is where my wife seems to be stuck between a rock and a hard place. We're poor, and because of her body shape it's really hard to find clothes that fit, let alone clothes that she can feel cute and confident in. And there's very little places where she can find what she's looking for, for a price that we can actually afford. We've tried looking around. We know about how they steal, we know how the clothes aren't the best material, but when it's between wearing bland illfitting clothes from walmart that makes her feel like a potato, and Shein where she likes how she looks, we're going to pick that one. Honey doesn't always provide the discounts that we need that could bring the clothes into our budget. But if anyone has any alternatives, I'm all ears. or eyes, since i'm reading.
Honestly, when times are tough there's nothing wrong with doing what you can for yourself, even if your options aren't ideal. Feeling comfortable and confident in how you look is a major boost to your self esteem, and is important for your mental health! I understand the conflict between not wanting to support Shein and also wanting to have access to clothes that make your wife feel like her best self; and it certainly seems like you've looked at alternative options, so your heart is clearly in the right place. Maybe think of it as using Shein as a stepping stone to a better place financially, at which point you'll be able to support more ethical options? And, as others have said, thrifting and goodwill might be alternative options in the meantime. If your wife has any interest in sewing, thrifting and modifying clothes just for her can also be a really rewarding hobby to pick up! I have a couple outfits made out of old recycled sheets and curtains, and even walmart's clothes can be made way better with a bit of fitting to body shape.
I really don’t recommend going for Shein because of the working conditions they put their workers in (and their rip-offs) but also safety. One out of every 5 of their clothing is laced with high amounts of lead that can’t be washed out. By buying these products, you have a more likely chance to be wearing clothing laced with lead in the dye that will severely impact your health. Even though you may be poor, is it worth risking your health by possibly wearing clothes covered In high amounts of lead and unsafe material? Some alternatives can just be looking at Ross, (maybe Walmart?) and other thrifting stores like everyone else suggested.
i understand your situation and id say preferably go thrifting but dont feel bad because at least yours is a mindful purchase and you dont really have other options however what really ticks me off is the rich girlies doing 100$ shein hauls on their high rise apartment in the city
MatPat PLEASE help shine a light on how abhorrent SHEIN is in every single way! And how about theories about how clothing was before fast fashion! Or about the historybounding and cottage core trends going mainstream :)

*I’ve heard about all of this things going on and I’m just confused. When I ordered it said that everything was made from a different store so that’s why it takes so long to get the clothes.* *Shein is also known as a marketplace, so clothes or anything sold on their is from other shops Shein is probably just a market place to get other stores out there.* *So it has confirmed themselves their not a whole factory. But I love this as much as I love any other video done by matt.*
I actually knew it from blogilates (thanks to her) and was trying to tell my mother who recently discover it But she did not want to listen saying it's life (something like that) Then (fortunately) we watch on the news a reportage of shein (with all the stealing and how it does it) and my mother was quite shock to heard it (they explained so much better than me and had multiple case and arguments than me) Now my mother does not use as much shein as before (even if she loves it and use it sometimes)
UA-camr Iilluminaughtii did some amazing work in their episodes researching SHEIN and fast fashion. I'd love to see more content about their practices and maybe even a collab would be fantastic!
A style theory (or "series of theories" I know how careful you are about your video runtimes) doing a deep dive into the dystopian hellscape that is the fast fashion industry is well worth doing, I would definitely watch, I suspect what I know about it is very much the iceberg top.
Matpat, we NEED a theory on the horrible practices on Shein. I mean, it's ON FASHION too, so this is totally in your range for this channel! Besides, you put things together much better and easier than I could, so I'd love to see your full view on this. :]
No cuz I did talk to one of my friends about it who got from the website but she had the audacity to just be like, “Oh I know. But it’s cheaper so I’m still gonna buy”
I would love to see another shein video made by you. I know there's already a few out there, but your production value makes the topic be presented more professionally
Speaking environmentally and budget friendly shopping for clothes. I think one of the best ways to do both is to just resale shop. Reuse what already exists at a fraction of the cost. And if you learn how to sew, you can make clothes that are otherwise unappealing or the wrong size, look and fit better. I think it would be fun to see a theory on budget friendly fashion in general.
A video all about how bad Shein is would be awesome!! I didn't even know this company existed until a week ago and forgot about it until this video was uploaded
Yes please do a full shein video! Personally Im more interested in ethical production concerns when it comes to things I buy, I already avoid brands like shein but would love to learn more about it :)
I feel like I remember there was a whole thing a couple years ago with Shein making some sort of jewelry or something that looked like a swastika or something like that. I’m not sure if it actually happened but regardless the company has pretty much always given me the ick as a result
I hate so much that this is what the company has come to, but on the other hand for the plus size community it can be so important. This website was the only site I personally could look through and always find clothing that not only fit me but that I also genuinely liked without having to give up every cent my minimum wage job pays for maybe 2 or 3 items. it has played such a huge part in learning to be more confident for me and has been a godsend with prices for everything being so high. I really really hope the company shapes up for the better, its either that or other companies start pitching in to help replace it.
Thankyou for making this comment, I was honestly about to make the same message. We can recgonise that a company is a horrible trash fire but also recognise the necessity to have options in clothing that are cute and plus size friendly.
I appreciate the needs for cute plus sized clothes, but am I to understand you are STILL buying from them? You realize that means you are valuing your personal fashion as more important than not stealing and are being complicit, right? I don't care how limited my options are, theft from small creators is where I draw the line. There definitely need to be more options in terms of sizing from all brands, but that does not make ordering from SHEIN okay until other brands shape up in that department.
The average person buying a few things from shein isn't a huge problem. The real problem are all these influencers and rich girls buying whole closets from shein every season when you can buy a few items and reuse them
I know someone who is a fashion designer for aritzia. Her whole job is to buy popular items from other stores and make a version of it for aritzia. Stealing like this is more common than you think, but it absolutely crosses the line when they do it to individual designers and small businesses.
After seeing multiple clothing creators (Including Cassey) talk about this, I KNEW I needed to find out what you can deduct from this! Can't wait to watch :)
Shein's horrible practices were a huge part of my capstone paper! I focused on Fast Fashion and its horrible practices and oh my god is shein like the BIGGEST contributer...
I've only used Shein once for a particular style of beanie that refused to come back to other stores because they weren't "on trend". Fast fastion sites really have everything. But I had already had my general run of clothing roulette a few years prior so I already could see what kind quality I'd get from the other products.
Shein isn't the only one🤣🤣 companies have been doing this for years, Walmart is a big one with their clothes looking similar to more expensive clothing
Theory/Discussion Topics: (1) Fashion has become more of a form of social control than merely a way to cover people's bodies. Been like that for centuries, but when did it start? Why is it so effective? And is there a way to combat it? (2) Fashion's obsession with romanticizing crimes against women. Touch on the recurring themes of murder/assault shown at fashion shows (especially at older ones, persistent marketing of hypersexualized clothing towards younger audiences, and even collections that glorify sexual crimes against younger women.
can you do a theory about Claire's make up? Or Claires in general? Or Hot Topic and It's tendency to steal art for t shirts and stuff? I remember RawBeautyKristi had a pallet that Hot Topic ripped off.
I don't like what Shein is doing but I don't want it to be cancelled cuz there is many other stylish clothes that are not stolen and shein is the only place I have fashionable clothes from.

Concerned? 😂
I mean... there was nothing to be concerned about food theory. Food Science alone has a lot of topics to be discussed about, not to mention legal stuff involving food.
However, as someone who isn't much into style and most of what I expected this channel is about, I can relate to how you feel about Style Theorists and the videos so far.
The AUDACITY for a Shein ad to pop up while watching this video is CRAZY😂
You can thank Google for that one.

I honestly don't know how SHEIN has the audacity to continue as a company 😭
They're a Chinese company, this stuff has been happening way before SHEIN.

I'd love an episode about Shein itself! Or even one that's about which brands are actually sustainable and have workers who work reasonable hours for a reasonable pay... It would probably help out others too who would like to start shopping more ethically but don't know where to start!
This is a great idea! I don't do much clothes shopping, so making sure to get my clothes from brands that are actually ethical would be something I'm interested in!
@@hawklegs6940 I suggest watching Shelbizleee, shes is a youtuber that gives tips on how to live sustainably and has a video in which she ranks the best ethical clothing brands.

Please do another episode about shein!! It's so painful that they're still thriving when we know that they're such an unethical company, and hopefully more awareness will help combat their success
I personally would love to see episodes about the ethical and environmental concerns of fast fashion as a whole, but especially Shien.
I think it’s because some shirts with artists designs are under contract with the actual artist
Not saying all are just that I have seen some artist say they have a contract with hot topic and they weren’t stolen
That’s awful!!! I haven’t seen those shirts, but I don’t shop at fast fashion places.
I’m so sorry about that. I hope everyone notices that and instead buys from her.
That is totally awful! I hope she starts selling again, I can only believe that her ideas and creativity will be amazing !!!
I didn't know that Shein was such a bad company until I heard the news about Cassie's work, I feel so bad for her!
It would be so cool if a disguised big fashion designer (disguised as smaller one) gets their idea ripped off and fights back with big money

Would love an episode on if those new odd facial products actually do anything for your jaw and skin
Like those ice rollers and jade stones that are supposed to move your jaw, do they actually do anything? Always wondered if it worked or was just a lie.
Here's my idea for a possible style theory:
Is it actually better to dye your hair when it's dirty versus when it's clean? Bonus, does someone's hair type affect the results (e.g. thickness, texture, natural color)? I've definitely heard it a lot over the years but I'm not sure if it's true...
THIS!!! I need to know this. And are we talking about dying your hair or bleaching it?
In my personal experience, my hair color grabs better when it's a day unwashed. Not too greasy, but it can't have a coating of conditioner on, either. It will depend on hair type for sure, though
If you are bleaching or using dyes that are permanent and have lifting agents like ammonia you should do it on oily hair. If you are dying with products that may or may not be permanent but do not have any harsh chemicals, like manic panic or directions, you need clean hair.
Thickness, texture, natural hair colour and whether your hair is dyed or not also play a significant role for how long and what products you need for bleaching.

As in chemicals you wash out or in the fabric itself and leaching
@@darladay4766 I believe that lead is used in the dye, so washing it out isn't possible. The articles I found say that about 1 out of 5 clothing items tested positive for lead and other chemicals that you probably shouldn't have a lot of exposure to.
@@renyanoel7413 that would be lots of leaching.
0:37 SHEIN EVEN STOLE HIS CHANNEL 😂
Thrifting might be an option for you. But don’t feel evil for doing what you have to do. There’s only so much available when you have few funds

When I ordered it said that everything was made from a different store so that’s why it takes so long to get the clothes.*
*Shein is also known as a marketplace, so clothes or anything sold on their is from other shops Shein is probably just a market place to get other stores out there.*
*So it has confirmed themselves their not a whole factory.

I find that if you want plus size and more ethical, ava viv at target is a bit better
The real problem are all these influencers and rich girls buying whole closets from shein every season when you can buy a few items and reuse them
Girl, it is NOT the only plus size store out there. Old Navy has great stuff if youre looking for cheap basics.
I know someone who is a fashion designer for aritzia. Her whole job is to buy popular items from other stores and make a version of it for aritzia. Stealing like this is more common than you think, but it absolutely crosses the line when they do it to individual designers and small businesses.

"Fast fastion sites really have everything."
Which is ironic because you'd expect them to be the ones just keeping up with the trends
Yes please do an episode on all Shein’s unethical practices😊
As someone who professionally studies fashion and is planning to become a fashion designer I find this video extremely useful
The funny part is, I got an ad for SHEIN right before this video 😂
I've seen my favorite indie brands just loose their designs to shein being able to copy things faster for cheaper prices.
This channel is better at teaching me history than my teachers!
I ordered clothes at shein once and I’m never doing that mistake again
Shein isn't the only one🤣🤣 companies have been doing this for years, Walmart is a big one with their clothes looking similar to more expensive clothing
Yup and in more industries than just fashion.

Theory/Discussion Topics:
(1) Fashion has become more of a form of social control than merely a way to cover people's bodies.
