I've been avoiding buying anything from the TikTok shop purely because it was too new and too suspicious. It appealed to me because I'm broke, but I had a bad feeling about it.
I seriously hope the tiktok shop doesn't become bigger than it is. I tried to buy a Christmas present for my mom from there and it was such a nightmare. I never got the item I ordered and getting a refund was so difficult for no reason.
Amazon is just so much more trustworthy and smooth for the most part. Definitely not everything, but it's been around for longer and they have more stuff figured out.
I had a similar issue too. I ordered 2 weeks ago and it’s still saying it hasn’t shipped yet. Seller did nothing when I asked to cancel the order and they told me to just keep waiting when I asked for a new estimated delivery date. Ended up disputing it with my bank and got a refund that way.
While not through the TikTok shop, a company advertising heavily on TikTok did the same to me, and it definitely makes me not want to order from another ad unless I know the person.
This video is a living reminder that when Style Theory was coming out, and we got the hint that is started with an 'S' I was dead set on it being "Social Theory"

Mattpatt needs to make a video on how we can effectively avoid Shorts and TikTok( or overall things that decrease your attention span. ) like the wallmart video.
All you have to do is not engage with them if you want to avoid them. Its not like there's any actual NEED to use them, unlike areas where they don't have a choice but to use Walmart because Walmart drove out all the other grocery stores so you literally have no where else to get food. Food is necessary to stay alive. Videos on the internet are not.
UA-cam shorts is easy to avoid. It'll mess up yout homepage, but literally just turn off your watch history and you aren't able to use shorts anymore. Tiktok, just delete the app? Idk i've never used it.

The "great shutdown" also happened on ROBLOX where they got sued by record labels and had to erase their entire audio catalog of millions of user-generated audio assets because of the sheer amount of copyright infringement. Pretty sure the same is going to happen to the user-generated avatar accessories soon because there is an absurd amount of copyright infringement happening there now. Honestly ROBLOX might get entirely shut down because of the sheer amount of copyright infringement they are blatantly ignoring, it's actually ridiculous. Also I loved the subtle reverb on the "E" in "e-commerce"
My workplace has outright banned TikTok. Not just “you can’t use it while working” kinda banned, but straight up “if we find out you have a TikTok account you will be immediately fired” kinda banned.
To me the main evil in TikTok that I ran into were links to outside stores that weren’t in TikTok shop. I’m not surprised to learn that there was more hidden issues as well. I don’t hate TikTok, though I do hate some of the decisions that were made, and things that can happen on there. TikTok is a Caffeinated version of UA-cam and Amazon combo now. I would say don’t trust links in TikTok, go to the shop if you actually buy something.
The second I saw tiktok open a shop, I knew it was only downhill from here. I scroll past any product/sponsors so fast the algorithm doesn't show me very many.
Amazon taught me how to be a cautious creator via their influencer program. When I first started with TikTok Shop as a creator, I was mindblown by all of the copyright and FTC viloations.
All I know is, the only purchase I made through TikTok got lost in transit - and because of their rough CA department I wasn’t able to get either a refund or an exchange for my items. So as far as I’m concerned, it’s dead to me.
There is a major problem with videos being marked as for kids. It's an issue because youtube marks pretty much any animated content as for kids, which is not the best thing to do. I'm specifically talking about how many adultswim videos were marked as for kods, when they clearly were meant for adults, and should not be viewed by kids. Videos marked as for kids also reduces the reach, which can be bad for a youtuber. UA-cam shouldn't mark videos as for kids automatically, instead it should leave it up to the creator, or at least add a way to appeal it being marked as for kids (such as telling youtube that it contains content that is not for kids).
I wanna add that many local in person shops I’ve been to recently in my area. Are selling Shein and AliExpress products, for like 4-5x the price. I live near a very left, touristy town, and their downtown shops are known for being local and being sourced humanely. Except now this kind of selling behavior has gone from reselling “fast fashion” online to reselling it in real life stores that are claiming it to be “handmade”, which isn’t false. It’s scarily disgusting.
I used to love TikTok especially during the pandemic when I was doing zoom school. But I’ve gotten so tired of the app with every other video now being an ad with some product to buy and no longer seeing videos I actually enjoy.

If I see anything I want to buy I immediately go to amazon to see if they have it or something similar. just because I trust that Amazon would be able to either get me a new thing or refund my money reliably.
Same, I just don't think I can trust a new shopping site that much anymore, especially when you spend big money on it because you thought the shop was trustworthy and the next thing you know is that you got robbed of 200 bucks and the shop disappeared over night
I watched someone's video in which they purchased 4 of the same dress advertised; some even had the same exact photos for their products. The prices ranged from under $5 to over $200. The expense dress was great material and exactly what was advertised. Two had similar flower pattern but were not the featured corset style, and they were both made with lower quality fabric. The cheapest dress never arrived, and the website she had purchased it from had disappeared.

I'll miss you matpat.
8:57 this is how Amazon got so big. Back when they were just a book shop, this was their strategy.
We'll miss you Matpat! Thank you ❤❤
Hearing everyone on Tiktok whine about losing their store makes me feel so happy, I can't even tell you!
genuinely so glad my parents didn’t let me download this godforsaken app when i was a kid and i still don’t have it as an adult
I had ticktock for a bit in 2020 and gave it up.
I'm really happy with all these videos getting into content creator platforms. I've long wished you would open a Patreon with peaks into the algorithm research you & your teams do
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS (btw keep doing what your doing you make my day and I was just watching your other videos, 3rd like btw)
Surely the scams outnumber the true merchants.
Bye matpat we will miss you
It's a chinese company. Doesn't matter if they get sued or not, china's not exactly known for enforcing copyright/trademark issues.
It can still get them banned in some countries if they don't pay up to these big companies that have a lot of say in stuff
@@cbgaming7209 They're selling to consumers though. Nobody cares about consumers properly.
I will miss you thankyou for everything
Petition for MatPat to make a style theory about the springlock suits from fnaf
i was not expecting tiktok shop to become this popular 😭😭
I don't like that my fyp has felt like the Home Shopping Network. I try not to interact with the content at all because I'm trying to cut costs so them pushing products is feeling really... pushy.
How i never in my life think tiktok would been sided by mat
I’m not sure how you would research this but I was wondering for a video if you could do a theory to see if the colour or design of your pjs affects your dreams
Goodbye matpat we will miss u
You guys should do a video on if using or not using shampoo is beneficial. I’ve recently been going through some studies on the benefits of stopping the use of shampoo and I’m curious to know how the style theory team would tackle figuring this question out
I added something to my tiktok shop cart/wishlist(?) A while ago so that I could remember what I was thinking of when I had the money to go buy one OFF of the tiktok shop. It took me weeks to clear my feed of not only that item and similar items but also completely unrelated tiktok shop items.
