Yesss. Everyone needs to hear this especially assistants/apprentices who I see in the comments sharing their stories below. Another great advice I've heard for apprentices is to leave if you are not happy with who would be mentoring/teaching you. If you cannot see yourself being proud to stand by your mentor then you will do yourself and that person a favor by finding a new place.

Tell me why you ALWAYS read my mind haha. I just watched your Cancellation Policy yesterday and i had 3 back to back cancellations for Sunday and now im more than convinced I need to sign up for that cancellation policy lol. Plus ive been thinking of leaving my current salon of only 2 months. It's one of those salons you are thrown in with no guidance and little to NO information on where anything is located. Very frustrating and not motivating to take my clients there. Im now sure i am destined to leave and find a new salon, but leaning toward opening my own salon suite 😍 Thank you for always answering my questions! Xo from Oregon

Omg thank you so much for this. I finished my assisting program and I struggle with all your points . I’m so unhappy and I don’t feel like myself anymore . I don’t like the dynamic or the way it’s so stuctured . Nor the commission percentage.

Just left my first salon. I assisted for a year and they wouldn't move me up to commision stylist. I made minimum wage which is 7.25, and even though I wasn't starving because my husband is the bread winner, I felt my labor was worth more since I did half the color for stylists in addition to laundry and reception. I worked so hard to bring in my own clients, but when they don't let you have any salon clients, its so hard right out of school in a new area. I also felt as though I didnt fit in, like i wasn't trendy enough. Even so, I often questioned whether it was the right decision to leave, but this video has confirmed to me it was the right decision. I just interviewed for another salon position that is commission and I decided to take it. I really hope this renews my passion for hair, because struggling at the other salon was causing me to lose passion. Thanks Jamie! God bless.

I’m feeling the same way girl but I haven’t barely started assisting there and I don’t want that to happen to me , I definitely understand I’m still unsure or if I need more time to see I’ve only been there like 4 months doing front desk mainly

You are valuable. You are more than an assistant! Pray b4 any endeavor you undertake, I promise including God is the key ingredient to the recipe, even when/if you don’t seem to see Him working things out for your good. Sometimes, it’s about learning what NOT to do when undergoing certain experiences. Nevertheless, you’ll get through it better and more equipped. Best wishes to you!

i love your energy and your vibe. i wish more people were like you in this industry. i had to leave the salon i was at because i was assisting this woman that was essentially impossible to please. everything from how i looked, my weight, she just wanted to change everything about who I was. I was expected to babysit, to take the clients “they didn’t want” ... very very negative. it took such a toll on me that i actually left the beauty industry completely! but i still do hair from home because i do still love to do hair! just wish there were more bosses/educators out there like yourself who are there to help and uplift the new comers to the industry instead of ruining it completely. Much love. 💕

Hi Jamie! I'm apprenticing in Toronto after graduating in February of last year. I've been working at an environmentally conscious salon using Davines Italia and Evo Australia products and I love literally everyone there and couldn't be happier with my work even though I just assist as of now, and had been there for only 4 months.
But before, I worked for 5 months at another salon that was only part time and I helped out only 3-4 stylists, so the salon was quite slow; leaving me at times with days that I even questioned why the heck was I even there to begin with. To add to that, the people that worked there besides 1 stylist who worked once a week and worked another salon in the beaches were rather passive aggressive; in instances where I'd make even the most mindless of mistakes by leaving Clorox spray in the bathroom "as if I did it purposely", and at times the manager made remarks such as "soandso did toners x number of WEEKS working in the salon," or "how can you work in a salon with 10+ stylists, and you don't keep up." Not to mention I'd have nights where I went home crying.
Now I work full time, with 10+ stylists/colourists, loving and appreciating every day that I get to come in, work, learn, and observe what I'll be doing for the rest of my career, plus everyone at work have my back.
I wanted to share my experience to show that yes, it may take more than one salon to find a true peace. So thank you for your post.
    Love your vids :)

I’m watching your videos tonight so inspirational. I remember watching the devil wears Prada and thinking that it was the exact experience I had in the 90s you could write a mini series of the salon I apprenticed at. It was called Yosh and was very upscale started in the 70s actually and Vidal Sassoon was the other top salon in the neighborhood. We were known for our unique cutting technique where we don’t swap our comb while cutting. Everyone got to assist Yosh and when I left he gave me his 7 inch Scissors which I used all my career I couldn’t find an equal replacement to these.

I put in my two weeks notice yesterday, and my boss then started going off on me. Saying rude things, and being downright disrespectful. I'm so glad to be leaving and going to a salon that felt like home, even though I was only there for 2.5 hours. I just don't know if I can handle the two weeks. He is also saying I need to unfollow my clients? Like no, if they want to stay at his salon that's totally fine! I get it! But I will follow them still because I have formed a bond and I love these girls. I have a feeling some will follow me, but some won't and thats okay! Him telling me how to run my page is not okay. It's my page, I can post saying I like waffles, or about my dog, etc. He for a bit also didn't like how I had my own instagram... its 2021, everyone who's smart has a hair instagram account.

Jamie! Fellow hairstylist here. I love your videos and have been watching them for a while now! I really wished you had come out with this video back in October of last year, when Made the decision to leave the salon I helped open with some co workers of another salon we all worked at together. All for the very reasons you mentioned in this video. Bullying, gossiping, toxic environment. I have since found a new salon that is so much better, thankfully! Here is my question to you. How do you move on fully? The people I worked with at the previous salon were a big part of my life (being we saw each other every day) and even though a lot of them were toxic, its been 3 months and I still feel the hurt of what happened (there were some things said and done to me that were very hurtful) not as much, and some days are easier, but I am still so angry about what happened. I will never get an apology or even an acknowledgement that what was said and done was wrong. Does the bitterness eventually get better ? Thanks for reading, if you did ♥️

Thank you for this! I’m a newer stylist, graduated in January and started in a salon right afterward, I’m a month in and I am a full time stylist who manages the Salon’s social media and marketing and I have a coworker who literally belittles me constantly and client poaches me, I’ve brought it up to my boss multiple times and he makes excuses for her and let’s her say things to me and my clients, about me and how I’m not talented. I’m currently waiting things out because we have some educational trips coming up, but I kind of feel like I need to find somewhere else because my coworker is costing me clients. I’ve had regular clients from back when I was in school who’ve come in and are afraid to come back because of her 😞

    • @purplegirl8036

Exactly. They act like they are so perfect and it’s like how are people supposed to be at your salon and grow if you’re acting like an unprofessional idiot who hates on the people who pay you booth rent. One girl already left and I’ll be looking for a place. It’s a shame because it’s a waste of remodeling. She says she’s in debt but the mental debt is the biggest.

Great advice as always! Its important to consider your clients too when you're deciding if you should leave or not. Most of them may not follow you. You may have to start over building your business & restructure your finances from scratch. You might not be able to afford renting right away. So many layers, so many things to consider. Whoever said doing hair is easy is a damn liar! Appreciate your advice, knowledge & expertise Jamie, happy 4th to you & yours ❤🇺🇲

Hey Jamie! I recently graduated cosmetology school and got licensed and started working at a salon as an associate stylist last week. I'm supposed to work full time and get paid not very well, but I've been getting sent home early (about 4 hours early) and as well as being told not to come in certain days because "it's not busy enough for me", and so I feel like I'm not getting the education & pay I am supposed to get. The manager told me I would be training for a week- and then I would be allowed to shampoo & blow dry clients, but starting my second week, she told me I have to train another week because "she doesn't want me touching clients hair" and is timing my shampoos, conditions, & blowouts. The dress code is also very strict and I have to wear heels all day and she told me to "go cover up" because my shirt lifted a half inch when I went to grab a broom but had nothing to say about the other stylist in a corset crop top. And the manager hasn't taught me much about reception so I haven't been answering the phone calls because I wouldn't know what to say, so she decided to burst the other day and tell me "I see you keep avoiding answering the phone every time it rings. You are the only assistant and YOU need to pick up the phone." (There are 3 other assistants). Pretty much I'm just getting treated as the Cinderella of the salon and I am beneath everyone... because I just started though, I don't know how to tell them that I don't want to work there- especially since I'm still training, I feel like putting 2 weeks notice would be the wrong decision because they are training me specifically for how they want me to shampoo and use their specific products. (They also forgot to mention it could take over a year to become a JUNIOR stylist). It honestly feels like I joined a cult tbh... do you think that it would be wrong to just quit my second week?

I just currently left my first salon job do to realizing she was running it illegally- wasn't paying any state or federal taxes plus I had NO idea she had to legally pay me minimum wage if I made 0 dollars in a day as an employee (since booth renting is illegal in my state and I wasn't considered an independent contractor.) Hi Jamie I absolutely love love your glasses just wondering what brand style they're are? Xx This video also helps me so much right now especially being newly signed off hairdresser I know that I am still growing in so many areas in hairdressing and feel that lately I've been put down told by my boss I'm ditsy as my thoughts do sometimes wander during day and I at times do daydream. Although when I am doing hair I try my best to be present and focused. I just don't think it's right for my boss to say things like that. I feel it's inappropriate to call someone ditzy although I am absolutely open to constructive criticism that is not. so definitely thinking about what best decision for me at my current salon is.
