I’ve been doing hair for 25 years, and here’s some free advice: keep lively music appropriate to the client and shop, going at all times. I’ve experimented and it does make a big difference in how you work. Make it loud enough for you to hear and feel, but never so loud to impair your capability to communicate with or irritate your client. I took good time developing a playlist of music that was good enough to get quite a few of them asking what radio station it was so they could listen in the car! Make sure the fidelity quality is good to, because it makes the music more engaging at lower volume. Next bit of advise is, rather than thinking in terms of just working “fast”, think in terms of rhythm. Lock yourself into a flow and pace that feels natural to you, but get a rhythm to everything: how you use your scissors, how you talk to the client, how you reach for tools, how you work your lunch in: EVERYTHING. Once you find your rhythm you can adjust and tweak it and push against your comfort level a bit to speed yourself up, if you even want to. By just establishing a flow and rhythm that feels natural to you, you won’t be projecting nervousness back to your client, and you’ll seem more relaxed and confident to them, and even yourself. Examine everything you’re doing, and look for micro areas where you are expending time on needless things. Be aware of where you linger in the service. Some parts of the service may not mean much to a customer, so skip things that don’t please them or bring in cash, put bluntly. Seek out tools and techniques that will help you do services faster, invest in its purchase, it will pay you back many times over, and spare you stress.
"Be okay with being slow." - Best advice ever! I think once the pressure is off you will naturally get faster. Trying to rush yourself is usually a recipe for disaster. Not only can it stress you out but it can bleed over to the client and they sense the rush, which ruins the experience for them. Great video.
As a current cos student I have been really really discouraged and honestly have been thinking that I can’t do this as a career even though I absolutely love doing hair, I had a friend discourage someone from coming to me because they said I took too long, and this really hurt my feelings, even though it is true. thank you so much for this video I really needed this ❤️ Edit: and it’s hard as a student too bc I am a detailed oriented person so everything takes forever bc I am a student and on top of that I do the detailed services

They love that I’m detail oriented and that’s the main reason they continue to come back to me so some people will hate it other will love it and those that love it are your people.
I'm only a little over a year and a half licensed, and I relate soo much to your comment! I've come to that point of almost quitting as well. Coming from another SUPER slow detailed person, keep going!! The best advice I've ever been given was to get out there and find a salon that you enjoy that offers a apprenticeship program you like (I feel like each place has there own way of doing things). I also agree with Brandy Chavez, I have found there are clients that enjoy that I spend the time to really do a nice job! We are artists and there will be people that love you and your style!
Well you certainly aren’t the only one. I’ve been detailed oriented my whole life and it has always slowed me down, but the end result has never been disappointing! I felt the same exact way back when I was in school. But try to surround yourself with people who will encourage you, because someone who would tell a guest not to go to you, isn’t a friend at all, in my opinion. Just because you think you’re aren’t fast enough, doesn’t mean you aren’t good!! Not to mention you’re just starting out, so give yourself a break. Take time to practice, and if you truly love what you do, good things will come! You’ll see...😉
I sure as hell wouldn't call that "friend " a friend anymore , they just gave you a big ol stab in the back. Maybe that person is envious and wants to sabotage you. Also when you start working in a salon make sure it's a place where you can grow professionally and not someplace that'll keep you as an assistant forever, I'm telling you from experience I've been at a salon for close to three years and I'm still mainly assisting and I don't see any growth opportunities and it's not for doing poor work because the few color jobs I've done have been well executed with absolutely no assistance at all and the curly clients I've worked on have come back to me but I feel it's convenient to keep me in that position because I keep that salon organized and it makes everything too easy for them

Thank you so much for this video! I was feeling really low on myself this week. I’m new in the salon. I’ve been there part time for 6 months and starting my 7th month now full time! I feel scared sometimes because I feel like idek what to do with some of my chemical services and cuts. I keep going in for practice on my days off of staying later to practice. One thing my boss says is scared money don’t make money, and fake it until you make it! She’s fine hair for 10 years and she is so fast. She always encourages me to just go like you’ve got someone waiting on you. I have a new client in the morning for a color, shampoo, cut, and style. I’m going to ace it ! 👏🏽🙏🏽💗🎉
This was way better than hearing “skip this step or that step”. I do all those little things and I love my work! The only thing I get down on myself on is my timing. But honestly. This made me realize that’s ok and if they want good hair they’re going to have to be patient. Which they always are! I just need to get over it and my timing will naturally come
This was always me! I was wondering why and felt guilty for being slow. But I didn’t account it the fact that I’m a perfectionist, I always cared well for each of my clients and ended up spending more time with each. But My work was also high quality and it showed.
Great videos and tips 👍. I’m 30 years in the biz and I just charge by the hour now. I value my time and experience and charge accordingly. When new guests ask how much services are I simply answer I’m $$$ per hour and this is how long that will take. I also don’t double book so that helps with timing and my perfectionism😉😉. I am the same way I'm so detailed it takes me a long time with my clients. I work at a franchise salon and some of the girls are just they want them in and out where is I'm the type where I want my clients to be super happy with the service and there be absolute perfection. So sometimes I feel funny because I'll have one client and my stylus next to me you will have to and between one of mine but I do realize I'm much more detailed and I am such a perfectionist
Continue to work at it. You will get faster but the most important thing first is to work on techniques where you are getting effective results first. Use a timer like on your watch and just get faster and try to beat your time by 1 minute or even 5 minutes each time you do a service.
I have been doing hair for 3 years now. I’m still a baby but all of my clients are thick haired latinas.. no matter how old they are. This was very helpful and I’m glad to know I’m not alone
Mastering the colour wheel has made me much faster .. I can do highlights and a tint in 2 hours with a full cut and blowdry now where as it used to take me 3 x

Yes I totally agree.. with that basic foundation its much simpler to grasp understand and increase your speed. You actually know better how to approach your clients.
This is true, but also true that some stylists are taking longer in applying color or doing foils. I am timing myself, it helps, just have to move my hands faster The funny thing is that some stylists are slow in general no matter how many years they’ve been behind the chair
Thank you so much for this video! Watching this video July 2021, on top of everything you talked about now we're dealing with people who haven't had their done since the rona lockdown. Now most clients are coming with over grown color and cuts. The salon I'm currently working at is tying me to the whipping post, about timing. I'm at the point of either burning my license, and stocking shelves at night at a grocery store, quitting my current place of employment, or blowing my brains out.

Your videos are always good, however I was hoping for some specific tips-like put your client with thick long hair under the dryer for 5-10 min before you do a blow dry or place your foils in the back farther apart--etc etc!!
you’re still pretty fast. hour - hour and half is fast to do full head of baby lights!! I guess it depends how much hair the client has though, and how detailed they want the look.
I personally charge for time and product because I love doing blondes and I agree with you saying your coworkers just doing a few foils , I've witnessed the same thing
@@JamieDana But said coworkers charge the same as me and but do less work. I'm in a small town in AZ and it's hard to know what to charge and most of my first clients say "wow that's really cheap" also it's hard to say something back to that. You've gotten to the point where you charge for consultations and I feel lone it's not that easy for me.

I have a question, lately, my clients have been getting stuck at a level 7/8, orange 😭 These are the same clients I’ve had for 2 years now, I’m doing the same thing, fine sections, I bump up to 30 vol, process for 45 mins... I didn’t switch my bleach nor toners. They are levels 2-4, but I would be able to lift them way higher. Now all the regrowth that we are touching up stays orange. Do you have an idea why? I’ve been beating myself up this whole week. I don’t have a heater & the room is cooler now with the colder weather, could this be it?
Briana, I would highly recommend either switching your lightner or making sure that your highlights are fully saturated from top to bottom. Redken w/the bonder inside is a good (no swell) lightner. I can usually get client's pretty light w/ a 20 vol dev. Bump to 30 on the last section. Oligo (Blacklight) is also a great brand for lightner as well. Good luck!
Yeah maybe switching lightner will help! And also, I find that a lot of stylists eyeball their lightner, but measuring (most 1:2, redken 1:1,5) will give you more consistent results
At school they tell me it should only take you X Y Z to do a service then when I go into salons and do work they tell me different. So I'm not sure if I'm slow or if I'm being told different times. A full head takes me about an hour to hour and half and a blow-dry takes me about half an hour am I slow or is this normal?
It takes me forever to hair because I’m a little bit of a perfectionist but I (most) of the time I have the nicest or closest to nicest out of the class
I am about to lose my job cause I am new to the business only 3 month behind the chair since 2019. Had health issues and know I Have two weeks to speed up my haircuts or I am fired. They are already looking for a replacement for me. This use to be a positive job at first and now it is causing me anxiety. I wish I could find and appreciate job in Florida that would give me the training I need
I just did a highlight and it took me 6 hours to do 🤦🏼♀️ I’m so embarrassed by how long it takes me and I feel the over stylist look down on me for it. I’m just beginning and I don’t get enough color clients to practice.
Girl I’m in the industry for 4 years and doing this every day. My clients love what I do. For example micro foils (babylights). A full service takes me 5 hours. Foil (1hr30mins) or more if the client has lots of hair. Process, rinse, apply root shadow, process 20 mins, apply all over toner - 20 mins (i like to process my toners separetely) wash, condition, mask, dry, style. 5 hours :)) i also feel like shit sometimes but by the end of the day when my clients see their hair flawless, they don’t care for how long they’re sitting in my chair
Tammy Williams exactly! Trying to figure out to do things with my left hand seeing everything done the right hand way is harder for us. Let’s not talk about getting shears. Ours cost more!
With all these hair tutorials our business is suffering from people doing their hair at home but it’s so much educating for us stylists! Oh well I guess
I can’t really say I agree with that. Most hair tutorials are pretty complex. I’m a stylist myself and I can barely touch up my face framing pieces in foils because looking in the mirror it’s all backwards lol. From what I see, most of all that they usually do at home is root touch ups or coloring all their hair with (probably) permanent color or they end up really harming their hair with lightener and end up in our chairs for a color correction anyway. But, if they can do it at home and are ok with it, good for them because not everyone can afford to get their hair done. This is a luxury (not necessary) business, always has been.
I actually think it creates business for us because no tutorial can teach them to do their own hair well and they only end up in our chair for expensive colour corrections afterwards !
My boss tell me I doing it correctly and looks nice but I take longer and he want to replace me so how can I get faster till the end of the month I started 6 months ago

Great advice! I worked in a Vegas casino and we did that. It really keeps the guests and the employees moving without stressing them out.

Mastering the colour wheel has made me much faster ..
I can do highlights and a tint in 2 hours with a full cut and blowdry now where as it used to take me 3 x

Yes I totally agree.. with that basic foundation its much simpler to grasp understand and increase your speed. You actually know better how to approach your clients.
1 hr for a full head is FAST! lol for me anyways! I'm lucky if I can do it in 1.5 hr. and it is because of my detail work . wish I could be quicker !

This is true, but also true that some stylists are taking longer in applying color or doing foils. I am timing myself, it helps, just have to move my hands faster
The funny thing is that some stylists are slow in general no matter how many years they’ve been behind the chair

Thank you so much for this video! Watching this video July 2021, on top of everything you talked about now we're dealing with people who haven't had their done since the rona lockdown. Now most clients are coming with over grown color and cuts. The salon I'm currently working at is tying me to the whipping post, about timing. I'm at the point of either burning my license, and stocking shelves at night at a grocery store, quitting my current place of employment, or blowing my brains out.

Your videos are always good, however I was hoping for some specific tips-like put your client with thick long hair under the dryer for 5-10 min before you do a blow dry or place your foils in the back farther apart--etc etc!!

I'm in a small town in AZ and it's hard to know what to charge and most of my first clients say "wow that's really cheap" also it's hard to say something back to that. You've gotten to the point where you charge for consultations and I feel lone it's not that easy for me.

I have a question, lately, my clients have been getting stuck at a level 7/8, orange 😭 These are the same clients I’ve had for 2 years now, I’m doing the same thing, fine sections, I bump up to 30 vol, process for 45 mins... I didn’t switch my bleach nor toners. They are levels 2-4, but I would be able to lift them way higher. Now all the regrowth that we are touching up stays orange. Do you have an idea why? I’ve been beating myself up this whole week. I don’t have a heater & the room is cooler now with the colder weather, could this be it?
Briana, I would highly recommend either switching your lightner or making sure that your highlights are fully saturated from top to bottom. Redken w/the bonder inside is a good (no swell) lightner. I can usually get client's pretty light w/ a 20 vol dev. Bump to 30 on the last section. Oligo (Blacklight) is also a great brand for lightner as well. Good luck!

Yeah maybe switching lightner will help! And also, I find that a lot of stylists eyeball their lightner, but measuring (most 1:2, redken 1:1,5) will give you more consistent results
At school they tell me it should only take you X Y Z to do a service then when I go into salons and do work they tell me different. So I'm not sure if I'm slow or if I'm being told different times. A full head takes me about an hour to hour and half and a blow-dry takes me about half an hour am I slow or is this normal?

It took me 6hrs to do a full hilite on a clients hair 😭🙃. But also I’m a cosmetology student haha. Still a baby lol
It takes me forever to hair because I’m a little bit of a perfectionist but I (most) of the time I have the nicest or closest to nicest out of the class

I am about to lose my job cause I am new to the business only 3 month behind the chair since 2019. Had health issues and know I Have two weeks to speed up my haircuts or I am fired. They are already looking for a replacement for me. This use to be a positive job at first and now it is causing me anxiety. I wish I could find and appreciate job in Florida that would give me the training I need
I just did a highlight and it took me 6 hours to do 🤦🏼♀️ I’m so embarrassed by how long it takes me and I feel the over stylist look down on me for it. I’m just beginning and I don’t get enough color clients to practice.
Girl I’m in the industry for 4 years and doing this every day. My clients love what I do. For example micro foils (babylights). A full service takes me 5 hours. Foil (1hr30mins) or more if the client has lots of hair. Process, rinse, apply root shadow, process 20 mins, apply all over toner - 20 mins (i like to process my toners separetely) wash, condition, mask, dry, style. 5 hours :)) i also feel like shit sometimes but by the end of the day when my clients see their hair flawless, they don’t care for how long they’re sitting in my chair
I’m left handed so that’s all the reasoning why 😅😂😂

Tammy Williams exactly! Trying to figure out to do things with my left hand seeing everything done the right hand way is harder for us. Let’s not talk about getting shears. Ours cost more!

With all these hair tutorials our business is suffering from people doing their hair at home but it’s so much educating for us stylists! Oh well I guess
I can’t really say I agree with that. Most hair tutorials are pretty complex. I’m a stylist myself and I can barely touch up my face framing pieces in foils because looking in the mirror it’s all backwards lol. From what I see, most of all that they usually do at home is root touch ups or coloring all their hair with (probably) permanent color or they end up really harming their hair with lightener and end up in our chairs for a color correction anyway. But, if they can do it at home and are ok with it, good for them because not everyone can afford to get their hair done. This is a luxury (not necessary) business, always has been.

I actually think it creates business for us because no tutorial can teach them to do their own hair well and they only end up in our chair for expensive colour corrections afterwards !
