    As a software engineer, it's amazing to me that a product this technically deep that exposes so much detail about how 3D graphics actually works ever found product-market fit.
    Houdini is a tremendous feat of engineering, like the SR-71. I admire SideFX's courage.
    This workflow is also clearly the coolest possible way to make a 3D donut.

    Your discussion about having to add a normal tag and all the elementary level tags to a surface reminds be of my engineering school days in the 80s. Students would come in and show off their HP calculators and how you can get graph an equation on the large display. Later, they just keep putting in y=x^2 to show friends but never use it otherwise because it takes too long to use the feature. That is how I think about houdini.

    Houdini seems a little impossible to learn sometimes. It's like a programmer's tool.
    My medieval times analogy for these applications.
    Maya, Blender, C4D, 3DS Max Artist: Carefully does a painting with a brush to produce art.
    Houdini Artist: Crafts a complex apparatus that splashes paint tins on a canvas to produce art.
    Learning and testing takes time but in the end the Houdini Artist learns how it works and can tweak that machine to produce different kinds of paintings in no time.
    I'll now go and carefully paint with blender.

  • @jonaseriksson2367

    Quick mountain question. When you add the mountain node, you get node that gives you stuff like height and element size etc. When I try to add a mountain node. I get an attribute noise named ”mountain” that dosen’t give me height. It gives me the same stuff as the standard ”attribute noise” node gives me. Seems a little odd. Have you encountered this and do you perhaps have a solution? I’m just using the free version of houdini to try it out. Version 19.0.587 but I’ve also tried 19.0.680 build

      it would be something like this in a point wrangle (make sure to create the float slider for "Amp" after you enter the code):
      v@P += v@N * f@weight * chf("Amp");
