Take 10 seconds and sign up for my free "5-Bullet Friday" newsletter: go.tim.blog/5-bullet-friday-yt/ Each Friday, you’ll get a short email from me with five things I've discovered that week, sending you off to your weekend with fun and useful things to ponder and try. 🙌
1. Get it in the calendar
2. Pay for stuff in advance
3. Commit to people so you have accountability
And a lot of things will take care of themselves after that
This dude is criminally underrated and underappreciated
Definitely not. Only thing is that you came to know about him lately 🙂
Definitely, been saying this for 10+ years
He’s worth at least 300 million so he’s hardly underrated
As a computer scientist I can attest to the idea of a task switching cost. It's called context switching for a computer process and it is *expensive*. Minimize it as much as possible.
That's absolutely right, we actually build the software in our minds beforehand. We can clearly see the different actions we need to take to achieve the result, it requires us to be very focused. In this state, if somebody calls you on slack and you engage in a conversation that has nothing to do with what you were doing, the entire context that was built in your short term memory is lost. When going back to the task, we need to rebuild it by remembering where we were and what we were doing which is draining. To counter that we block our time and use noise-canceling headsets. Context switching is exhausting and unproductive.
@@Utopy34loss of short-term memory related to the work at hand! Eureka! You blew my mind with that tiny insight thank you
ua-cam.com/video/6H0rrcP9LvA/v-deo.html
As a machine learning scientist I concur. However, as someone in industry, it is really important that you learn to adapt to context switching. In a typical day I have meetings, interviews, random interruptions from coworkers (even through chats while quarantining), emails to handle, code review meetings, etc. etc. In between those things you have to learn how to get good at context switching, and its hard for me still (I've only been in industry for about a year so a short time). Minimize context switching, but become adept at it if it means necessary.
Gergaferg: To expand on this, isn't what you said actually a call for better leaders to come up & give their scientists/engineers/creatives large blocks of space for undistracted focus? I could be totally off base, but I suspect that your org could help you be MUCH more productive by NOT having you be involved in many of those meetings/calls/etc. Again, I could be totally off-base.
I have attempted to meditate many times in my life and prior to this CD the only success I've experienced is with live guided meditation. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxzpa8CIfZcihW4Z0F_ja0QF3W9KIatrsq This is the first CD I've used that cuts through my unmedicated ADHD and enables me to truly relax and experience a quiet and energizing interval. The instructors voice is very soothing and pleasant to listen to. I am easily able to sit successfully through the entire CD, and for quite some time after. I cannot adequately express how tremendously helpful this CD has been on my spiritual journey!! Two thumbs up and 10 stars!
Another great video lesson, Tim! I am really enjoying this style of content you are putting out. Here's what I got out of this video:
1. You will never find balance
- "You won't find it because you have to schedule it."
- Examples: batching (ie. Admin work on Mondays, Podcast recording on Fridays), Content Creation Week (this is quarterly), regular Art Creation time (ie. 90-minute drawing session once/week)
2. Schedule Off-Grid Time
- 1-2 weeks blocked out and prepaid for (leaves a penalty for canceling = loss aversion). No reading, no writing.
3. Put it in the calendar!
- If it is not penciled in, you will self-sabotage or neglect and end up paying the price later
4. Commit to things by paying in advance and involving outsiders for accountability
Writing allowed he said. i think he meant that to stop binge any content, but continue to "do it yourself", like writing instead of reading, playing music instead of listen to music, do sport instead of watch sport. It's my view
@@MrSushi57 Thanks for correcting that! And good point. It seems like a lot of these are creative-mind focused so that makes a lot of sense.
Sometimes I want to double-like. One thumbs up is not enough. This is one of them.
"You won't find "balance", you need to schedule it /find it" .... and that goes with many things people (we) sometimes wait for life to just throw it in our faces.

@@theatlas5990 nice video... Really like the pyramid concept... Is there a book that talks about this?
Starting to use Self-Reflection on a regular basis (using my journal) really was the key to boost my productivity but also happiness with my life to a whole new level
I live on a permaculture farm with lots of artwork and personal development. I have like 50 things going on at once, plus weather conditions. I have taught myself how to create flow and integrate the many jobs into the day/week. I have plenty of open time which I can say yes rather than no with my own doings. Being not so hard on myself is one of the greatest challenges. My own doing needs to have the balance machine sitting close by.
This is the perfect motivation I need during this lockdown. No more drinking tequila shots at 9:30 in the morning and being three sheets to the wind with no pants on by nightfall. Not to mention how fat I've gotten basically eating 24 hours a day, less the period of passing out face down in my kitchen.
Just takes one little change to get the ball rolling
Maybe the funniest comment on YT
@@HowToVideosAndTips I'm glad someone appreciates good pandemic humor.
This is the most Tim Ferriss video I have seen in a while. :)
Don't waste your potential, because potential not acted upon turns into pain and depression. Whenever I make consistent progress with my UA-cam channel I feel most fulfilled. Even though I recently started and I don't get many views I stay at it. Tom Bilyeu says success is being able to accept yourself when you're by yourself. Taking consistent action will get you there. It's worth it. 👏✨
What a well timed comment to stumble upon!! I was just feeling down and your statement of wasted potential is at the root of that depression! I also have a small UA-cam channel and your statement in little views yet still leading to fulfillment is spot on! I’m going to your channel and subscribing purely for the help you gave me. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on growth (p.s karting rocks!)
@@driven15 Happy you found it so useful, thats awesome! 👊 Good luck with the channel & thanks for the sub! I Hopefully you'll get some more ideas out of it 😀
@LingoMaster Very good pointer, it's easy to get fixated on the results and not the process.
Wow... Put balance items on your calendar. How beautifully simple. Drawing, photography here I come.
It’s simple and so hard to get done. I found that I need to even schedule the time to organize all those schedules. Otherwise it won’t get done.
It’s so freeing the feeling when you have everything scheduled and then you only need to “live your life”. In the past I thought that living a life on the schedule was a prison, I realized I was just lazy back then. When you schedule, you live the life you want to live. You play your own the hand. And that’s AMAZING.
This video is worth its weight in gold!
Love how these videos come out exactly when I am thinking and pondering on the same questions. Great stuff Tim. Keep up the good work
Tim is my Virtual Mentor This guy gives a whole Informative Content For #FREE ❤️
Be intentional, conscious and structured. Make it happen captain!!😁😁
Awesome, thank you so much! Feel like this is the exact video that I’m needing in the moment!
Always love the content you share, Tim. Thanks for that.
This is so good, I love the weeks that you break out. Thank you👍🏽
Tim, I absolutely agree, scheduled means it’s happening!👍thanks for sharing xxx
Brilliant and perfect timing! Just happened to be reading 4HWW too 😁
Thank you for asking such a well thought out question, Krispy!
Tim, what a great message! Thank you!
I appreciate your transparency. Specifically, when you are talking about aspects of what you would like to cover in the video, and instead of providing generic examples, you choose to provide your own personal examples instead 👍.
I like the term, a "task switching cost." Personally, I enjoy how mindfulness has contributed to an increased ability to switch from one task to another.
Batching has been a key factor in helping me create some balance. Something I learned from your early day - thanks Tim!
I genuinely like your content Tim, it helps alot when in time like this quarantine
Facts, same
I really needed this. Thanks for the great advice Tim (and to the person who asked the question).
"make before you manage" - that's my next stop down the rabbit hole
Your advice is incredibly straightforward and useful. It's such a nice change of pace from other figures who drone on for hours and hours and don't really make many points.
Totally agree that there isn't a perfect answer. Having a content creation week coupled with consistency has been the secret to any of my growth online.
MEDITATION....knowing you are everything you will ever need. always thinking the best thought 🤘🔥❤
Thanks a lot for the concept of different calendars.
Daily, Weekly, monthly, quarterly etc
gonna implement that asap
your videos make me fell calm and grateful in the midst of this turbulent world that we live in. Thanks for sharing your wisdom
I genuinely needed this. Thanks Tim
astounding amount of value in one video. thank you yet again.
Thank you! This is perfect. I love that it's a highly practical answer. Now off to schedule things on my calendar.
The answer isn't complicated is it. Schedule it! That said, it is amazing how frequently we make it complicated by trying to do to much too quickly. Great lesson Tim!
I must say, Tim produces very good and practical advices consistently. I love the way you deconstruct those elements and also understood the practicality in suggestions. Thanks for doing home work before recording these videos and not simply ranting away to “clock” content.
I am determined to spread the word about Forwago. I tried everything and this was the ONE. Trust me, start using it, and you'll see crazy results on your personal progress.
Thanks Tim 😊👍 calendar it ! Key advice I need to do this ! Cheers
Loving these high quality vids. Full of useful information.
Nice one, Tim! Taking time out and scheduling breathwork makes the rest work. It makes sense to us.
Thank you, Tim.
Oh Tim, you´re awesome!!! Thanks for spreading the inspiratin!!!
Needed this right now, thanks Tim.
☀️ prioritization and organization seem to bring about freedom ✨
Great advice! Glad to hear I'm doing something right 😆
Thank you... this was exactly what I needed to hear
Thank you so much
This was fabulous. Thank you.
I am extremely grateful for your content, I am currently building out a team that works remotely to build out projects and light work. Blocking time and content creation time is very powerful!! My team thanks you!!
Looking forward to watching this.
Is it me or has Tim reverse-aged. He looks younger than he did 5 years ago.
Adrenochrome
He shaved the beard :)
Basically schedule time for yourself for all these things. Check doing this now. It has helped my ADD a lot.
Batching is a good tip. If you get in a flow - why not stay there :)
I would LOVE to see more videos like this in 2021!
Thanks for this content - create before you make! Thank you!
Your videos are awesome and they help me a lot to stay productive
That was incredibly helpful. I used to do batching and somehow drifted away from it, so I’m going to re-integrate it into my regular routines.
Your videos have hellp me a lot! just, thank you!!
And yes, stop-start different things or switching between things takes up lots of energy 👍
Great points and reminders. Thanks, as always.
Thank You, Tim! Coincidentally?, I just started to set up my Todoist Account. This is a big help... You have helped me and steered me on my journey to better myself and to serve others at every step.
Thank you!!
Thanks for sharing, Tim
Thanks for sharing this. Instant subscribe.
No where else have I seen someone answer this question. I needed this
Just such valuable information! Clear, simple, effective, smart and so well delivered as always!! Also love how you don't ask to like, comment or subscribe!
P.s - I hope to one day be in a partnership with a man as intelligent and awaken as you! So inspirational! Thank you for all that you put out there! Love from Portugal
what a stellar question
Super helpful - thank you.
Thank You
I have this problem, thank you for the video.
Amazing question. Well put.
Wow. Green sweater makes the green eyes pop!
Great video! Short and spot on
Thankx for sharing 😍 M also trying to figure out which days are best for which thing. It's always good to block time.
Yeah buddy!!!! ALWAYS NEXT LEVEL!!! STAY AHEAD FOLKS, GET SHIT DONE🔥🤘🔥🤘
I like the idea of having time off where you are allowed to write *but not read* ... reading sometimes distracts me from what I originally planned. I will try that, thx Tim!
Yeah task switching is really costly, have experienced in my own life.
As u might have also experienced, when we do one thing at one time(a particular day), we start getting creative in that task bcz our mind gets wired in that pattern. But when switching arrives then new pattern, new wiring, drain of energy and also time. So do minimum tasks in a day, I realized this after watching it.
Thank you for your video.
"Put it in the calendar" - we agree :)
Totally agree. Balance doesn't exist in the strict sense. It is more about the choices and investments (time and/or money committed to the choice thereafter) we make.
From my opinion it is about your honouring your mind and your body and your soul. List tasks that need to be done each day - sacred ritual, take care of your body and then take care of business. Flow them in the day/week/month.
cool advice
thank you, Tim
Great advice, Tim! I do exactly the same: plan, put it in the calendar, prepay and hopefully with no possibility to cancel :)
Awesome video. Booking things in the calendar seems weird but it's really effective. I like the idea of booking things in the calendar and have something that you'll lose if you don't do it. Definitely going to start using that. Hat tip for you Mr. Ferriss!
Tim, very interesting video and helpful as well. It reminds me a bit of that Jocko Willink's quote "Discipline is freedom".
Takeaways:
1. Get it in the calendar
2. Pay for stuff in advance
3. Commit to people so you have accountability
Wholesome video 💛
Although I am here primarily because of your always high quality content, the green-yellow scenery is for sure oh so pleasing to watch
@Marten Dekker whahahaha I did think of puke once while watching the video, but I am pregnant so my preferences for things might be not normal :P But at least he didn't wear green-screen green ^^
That’s two unrelated videos I watched tonight which have scheduling as the answer. Sounds like a great technique.
"Inspiration is for amateurs" Leonard Cohen on the art of sitting down and writing everyday.
Grant Marshall everyone is an amateur at some point
@@morgangreen2601 agreed! I just like the comment because I tend to lean towards inspiration. Doing creativity as a job is strange to me. I liked the quote because it provokes my thinking.
SCHEDULING balance. Wow never thought about it that way
Very powerful couching, I don't think so anyone can avoid and sideline such important aspects of managing time , results are awesome if we all can follow or else we need face the consequences if choose not to follow prominently.
I also used to analyzed my projects and split them into lists of concrete "to do", "what specifically will it take to bring this idea into reality?".
It ended up in 30min this and 1 hour that every single day, but as Tim says 2:30 the COST of changing focus is yugely big! At least for me, my thought pattern is INTP, so I get a lot of the juice when I can go into the flow zone for like 4-5 hours on just 1 specific topic.
It all feels more authentic as well, like I prepare and dive into these creative sessions now rather than checking off some list that follows the 10000 hour rule where I thought if I just put off time each day for something, I will eventually reach 10000 hours, but what quality did I really have? :)
The only things I keep to 15min/day are learning instruments like the Ukulele, which are good to have on the side as a kindergarten teacher, and practicing an instrument is more dependent on frequent sessions I think, to get it into your fingers. If you want to go beyond having the instrument as just a tool and become a master, this time obviously has to be increased drastically
I've become pretty good at identifying tasks (GTD, Todoist) but have been reluctant to use a calendar to schedule then. The "what" has to be combined with "when".
Tim, thanks for the info. Glad you're pushing more content out here. I suggest you create content in a "binging with babish" style. Show us how you do things.
