    My best moment in fantasy was when my hellblaster volley gun rolled a misfire and fired of its entire payload at once into a incoming charge of chaos knights, killing every knight.

    Some things as far as realism factor is concerned(particularly in relation to your comments on the Greatswords):
    1) Plate armour is virtually impervious to arrow fire with the exception of longbows and certain steel-armed crossbows at extremely close range, firearms(though, there were bulletproof -for the time- pieces of plate armour, even if extremely rare), and specialized thrusting and blunt-force weapons(like poleaxes, rapiers, estocs, warhammers etc.). This is why 2-handed weapons were such a big thing during the later medieval period and Renaissance - there was, pretty much, no need for them(at least, as far as those wealthy enough to purchase plate were concerned).
    2) The heaviest battle-worthy real-world greatswords weighed about 3.4kg. The heaviest suit of plate weighed around 50kg. The armour alone weights little over the full combat load of a modern day soldier. A large shield of a few killograms would not have been much of a problem at all as far as the weight is concerned, however, carrying a large shield would pretty much make your greatsword useless as you can't really use it with one hand all that well. While it's relatively light, the center of gravity is a fair bit away from where the dominant hand would normally be held - making it more top-heavy. This is also why greatswords have that second grip on the blade itself, which is dull at this section. The center of gravity will be within that area so it's common practice to grab it with the off-hand and use the sword like that. This is called "half swording", it can be done with, pretty much, any sword long enough, the blade doesn't even need to be blunt, you can safely grab a sharp blade, you just need to know how.
    That said, it wouldn't be insane to see a greatsword wielding soldier use a buckler in his off hand. The buckler is very small and can be useful in close-combat, it would also not prevent the individual from grasping his blade with both hands(even though the buckler is a center-grip shield, you can still grab two things with one hand. It's not really possible with a kite shield, for instance, because it's too big and would interfere with the blade).
    And, by the way, historically greatswords were used to counter pikemen among other things. The sheer length of the sword(being about as tall as your average person) and it's cutting power could be used to bash aside or chop the heads off spears and pikes, and the typically massive guard would serve very well in protecting the user's hands and arms.
    The downsides to it are that, when compared to earlier two-handed swords(like the longsword), it's not very nimble and it takes an exceptionally strong soldier to wield one. It's also fuck-huge, so you can't really carry it around with you outside of battle. In battle, though, they were typically carried on the shoulder and did not have sheaths because dragging a 6ft scabbard behind you isn't exactly what you'd call comfortable...or practical...or healthy for the sword...or any furniture you might come across....or any bystanders....or anything short of insane.
    Also, going from the models, they don't seem to be wearing full-plate armour, as that would have meant that they were, pretty much, covered in steel head-to-tow.
    Additionally, while plate-armor IS heavy, it's also(provided that it's worth a fuck) very evenly distributed and articulate. A knight in tailor-made, or at least fitting, full-plate could actually run at a respectable speed and could fight with full or near-full articulation(depending on the fit of the armour and his choice of some of the pieces). You CAN run and sprint in plate. Maybe not as fast as an unarmoured skirmisher, granted, but those bitches can run. And those Greatswords don't seem to be wearing the kind of heavy armour I've seen people sprinting in. They're, actually, fairly lightly armoured when compared to something like a Reiksguard - which is, basically, wearing a full set of Gothic plate armour.
    As far as battle-field role, I'd say charge-heavy shock infantry capable of surviving in melee against polearm equipped infantry and/or cavalry, but not dedicated melee infantry or super-heavy infantry. Should come in the standard size of 120 as well.

      PS: On Imperial Artillery - PLEASE, CA, PLEASE DON'T FUCKING USE THE EMPIRE/NAPOLEON MODEL! I fucking HATED it. Firing a 24lb ball of solid led at an enemy formation, having it hit dead-center and go up in marvelous display of sky-bound dirt and shrapnel...and only end up killing 2-3 guys? No, fucking, no, that's just....fucking no!!!
      Oh, and on the Hellstorm Rockets? Can anyone say Empire/Napoelon rockets? Highly inaccurate, largely impractical BUT, the morale effect from the sheer noise and the vision of incoming, fiery death should be devastating. The rockets themselves, provided they hit, should also inflict some decent casualties, but, again, extremely inaccurate.
      Also, NO miss-fires! It might seem good on paper, and it might seem good on tabletop but in-game it's going to be faken infuriating! Furthermore, what is a crew of highly trained, highly skilled and knowledgeable expert gunners, that have spent a good part of their lives learning how to shoot cannons effectively, even doing having misfires?! The Rockets? Okay, I can imagine a rocket curling back and hitting a unit in the back, or just fizzling out and not launching(or going very little distance), and I can imagine wet powder leading to a chance of any kind of fire arm jamming and/or fizzling, meaning that it has to be reloaded(at least, the one barrel that did). But when the weather is decent, and the weapons aren't notoriously unreliable(and the Hellfire Volley-guns really aren't)...just NO!
      As for the Steamtank, actually, I was thinking 1-2 per army. Think about it, enemy armies are going to have all sorts of crazy arse shit. Making the steamtank - what is, basically, to serve as the spearhead of your armies, cutting through the enemy's strongest troops to open a breach for your infantry and cavalry - a event only unique unit will basically make the Empire everyone's whipping boy. Just because a unit is powerful doesn't mean it should be uber limited.
      Making the game over balanced will lead to it being entirely stale and boring. There will be nothing, really, unique about the various factions. You cannot have balanced units, rather less factions.
      On the other hand, you can't, really, have under balanced factions either. It'd make them unplayable or just undesirable. Basically, as far as you've been going, the Empire are going to be dreadfully incapable of dealing with the big baddies of the Warhammer universe because all their heavy-hitters are either going to come in packages that are too small, too few in number or not powerful enough. Any unique or special unit can be countered by any singular fairly decent regular unit, monster units are pretty much useless because they come in numbers that'd be so laughably easy to overcome the enemy might not even care to consider them, artillery that's going to be abandoned entirely for something that actually works reliably - like a few more units of those painfully small specials.
      Also, a 20 unit late-game stack, which should have specials making up the majority of the stack, would look, feel and behave absolutely pathetically because their tiny numbers couldn't occupy any amount of space and it could just get overrun by a stack half as big with units half as good.
      Too little of a good thing means that it doesn't satisfy. There is a point to making some things OP, and there is a point to making seemingly monstrously powerful units even more monstrous. Because while those 5 models of Demigryph knights might be really powerful individually, they would, pretty much, be pulled out of their saddles and slaughtered by town militia. Why? Because 5 dudes on lion-eagles can't possibly hope to face 120 dudes at the same time. It doesn't matter how good they are, they'll lose horribly by virtue of the enemy's vastly superior numbers. You're making random peasantry the go-to unit for dealing with some of the most legendary bastards the Empire has to offer!

      PPS: That's not how you pronounce Ballista. It's pronounced exactly as it's written. Balista. The "st" is not a "ch", it's "st". S and then T. The A at the end is not an Ae or an E, it's just a hard A. It's a simple word.
      The plural of it is can be either Ballistae or Ballistas. The former is pronounced exactly like the base version with the "ae" being pronounced exactly like you'd pronounce the letter "A" on it's own, the latter I shouldn't even need to explain.

      50kg armour is meant for jousting not combat, Combat suits of plate weighed 15-25kg's. Modern soldiers actually carry significantly more weight than medieval knights clad head to toe in plate did. and have you ever tried to chop through a pike shaft? even when it's mounted onto a static emplacement it's difficult to cut through, when someone is holding it and it's not static it's nearly impossible, weapon breakage happens over the course of a battle through multiple engagements not one. Zweihanders Monte's warswords whatever you want to call them were incredibly nimble and could preform wide sweeping cuts to disrupt the positioning of the pike formations points, tangling them up in each other as they tried to rewrite themselves into a thrusting position.

    If I remember correctly, The Ottoman Empire in Empire:Total War had a 7 barreled artillery piece that had a similar effect to the Hellblaster Cannon, essentially a giant shotgun. It was balanced with insane reload time.
    Being the good Ottoman sultan that I was, I dealed with the reloading time by bogging down the enemy in range with droves of useless peasants so I could get as many shots of the beasts as possible before they reached my real army. The effects were devastating, to both my enemy and the peasants =P
    Well I guess it's a good thing that Skaven don't have one of these!

      That cannon did surprise me a lot, but if you don't have a cheap tarpit rabble to hold the enemy in position, the guns would literally fire once in the whole battle.

    I wonder if the pistoliers will have anything like "parthian shot" from some of the previous games: the ability to fire behind them. Certainly Outriders are unlikely to get it, but it's not inconceivable that one could turn around in the saddle well enough to get shots off at enemies behind them.
    It would make them pretty decent at taking out slower but more durable cavalry, so long as you can keep them beyond charge range.

    • @BrorealeK

      Previous total war games have proven that skirmish cavalry is useless without Parthian shot, so let's hope CA puts it in for the pistoleers.

    SKIP THE STEAM TANK?! ARE YOU INSANE?! THAT'S LIKE THE DEFINITIVE EMPIRE UNIT! the steam tank should be rediculously expensive, very late game, and have a huge upkeep cost, and possibly even take two unit slots in the army last - but it should not be limited on quantity. if you want an army of 10 steam tanks and you can afford it, it should be possible.

    I think the steam tank would be easy to balance do to its vulnerability because if you get a whole unit of strong infantry swarming this thing well (at the very least) they're going to flip it or otherwise immobilize it (do to the exposed back) and if a ogre gets to it with a hammer (a sword just bounce off the damn thing or otherwise break) its going to flip this thing on it's side or immobilize it (again it's exposed back) and Sigmar help the crew if the hatch is open and infantry gets in it and also big strong flying beasts with a high enough strength can just carry the damn thing of the battle field or drop it from the sky but it will still be over powered as hell with the only real weakness being air units witch can be countered by small arms if it flights too low and all the other things can be countered by your own infantry except heavy artillery friendly fire or otherwise.
    (p.s. im very sick and don't know jack-dit-aly squat about warhammer except what was taught by are lord and teacher Arch Warhammer so go easy on me and all the bullshit you think i said witch is probably true) also i'm very stubborn so don't expect to change my mind easily so give proof or good logical answers.

      Sir Dude In the case of Wood elves as far as I know they only have speed and magic counters to arty and things like Steam tanks and in table top I think they get a free forest anyway, but obviously the whole game will be a bitch to balance (it took them a year to balance Rome 2 lol ) We can only speculate and hope for a good game when it comes.

    Steam Tank is easy to balance, its rear is undefended, enemy infantry chuck torches at its engine bits and the boiler goes boom. Now ofc thats not an easy task, but that's if you don't have Giants, Trolls, Ogre mercs, Bullgores, ect. which you should have if your at the point where your fighting a Steam Tank. I don't think their should be a misfire chance in total war games cause even though guns and canons in history used to misfire all the time but CA still didn't give them a misfire chance, and it wouldn't make sense for them to do it just for warhammer. they could balance the more insane arty with stuff like extreme reload time, very high upkeep and recruitment, giving them a more limited ammo pools (won't work for all arty I know), and making them limited to recruit in the game with a long recruiting time.

  • @Papadragon18
    @Papadragon18 9 років тому

    In regards to the Steam Tank; I think it will be very expensive(both to buy as well as in upkeep), and it will take a long time to get, because you need to complete a series of upgrades(in campaign). With that said, it is very vulnurable to meele(The engine at the back is exposed, enemies breaking into the hatches, and so on), as well as taking increased damage of every kind from the back. Also, it would have a limited ammo supply.
    By the time you can actually get the unit, your opponents will have more or less equally powerful units to counter this one, or bring the pain unto the rest of your army.
    After all, one of the most important aspects of battles in total war is getting your enemy's units to rout, rather than killing every last one. If all units around the tank run away, the crew will be less than inclined to remain and fight a loosing battle.

    Arch I do like your videos but there is 1 thing that has been bothering me, you lump all cavalry in to the same group I know TW has light and heavy cavalry but warhammer has Monstrous cavalry aswell and you lump them in with heavy cavalry. Blood knights are the strongest heavy cav in Warhammer 8-th edition with Chaos knights as the runner up. Demigrypth, juggernauts of khorn and the ogres rhinoceros cav are all monstrous cav and not heavy cav. In Warhammer there is a huge difference between heavy cav and monstrous cav, might aswell use the terms as if CA are even trying to make the game resemble the Warhammer universe they will need to add in more unit types then light/heavy infantry and cav, artillery and skirmishers.

    I want to apologize because this is going to be quite a long post When it comes to fighting on the battle map itself its a joy to watch you move your troops and destroy your enemies. Your victory against Middenland was impeccable! Even if you forgot about poor Franz in the last video. Happened to me as well once xD
    But a TW game consists of more than battles and I do hope that you'll read my post and at least consider part of my advice for these three points. Oh, I'm also intrigued by your ideas concerning "torture dogs" and I am currently thinking about doing some research on which breed of dog would be best for your "interesting" plans.
    Diplomacy and early military targets
    While I absolutely agree on with everything you've said about the diplomatic AI in TW games you have to use the system.
    As soon as you discover a faction try to get a "non-aggression pact" (especially from all the ones you can see from the start - except for middenland...they hate your guts and have to die). This is an absolute must, because it'll make it almost impossible for them to stab you in your back and you need the "treaties with..." bonus to combat the minus from "great power" to stay on their good side in order to get trade rights (and through that a lot of money) after aboout 5-15 rounds. Always check your diplomatic options and try to get the next "lvl" of alliance, especially from your closest neighbours. Recruit as much as possible in the first 10 turns, even if that means that your armies are nothing but swordsmen and crossbows without veteran status and fuck Marienburg. It's the richest two-region-province in game (port + dies). Also, try to get the Nordlanders to like you with a few small gifts from turn one to get the defensive alliance for Karls epic quest. After you've done that (turn 10-15) annex talabecland and use your marienburg-war veterans, should be two and a half stacks by now, and the Talabec armies to sandwich middenland. Do not destroy Nordland (or Ostland if they've taken over)...they'll take care of most of the Varg/skaeling armies that land north of Weissensomething. Btw, you can take down the first separatist army and their city in turn one and the entire secessionists by turn 6 or even 5. Also, do not overestimate the importance of cavalry. True, they are certainly useful and the empire knights are ridiculously cheap, they are not necessary to defeat early game opponents. Capturing all your fleeing enemies is also not the best choice in early game because you could use the "leftovers" to get free experience. Their cons outweigh their pros in the first 30 turns. You have to sacrifice 2 building spots and a buttload of money (armoury lvl 2:10k, stables lvl2: I think 5,5 k) to recruit them. Those spots are better used for economy buildings. I build my first stable usually in middenheim.
    Early building policies:
    I do enjoy all of your videos but sometimes I don't understand why you watch so closely how far an enemy army may move and at the same time completely overlook some tooltips from buildings. For example the tavern building...its increased rate of research is completely useless, unless you have quite a few of them. A few percent won't change anything if your technology takes 6 turns. It would take you 3 taverns (two of them maxed out...which is just too expensive) to get it down to 5. In my opinion there is a very clear order in which you have to choose your buildings. 1. Ugrade the size of your settlement...always. 2. growth bonus...Practically no cost and a strong effect on the first level. 3. money building. The only city I don't have one is Altdorf. 4. trade building, a military building (get a lvl 3 barracks in pretty much any province later on - captains and their 3 exp bonus is broken...[I'm on turn 70 right now and can recruit gold 3 veterans...inf, artillery (Reikland) or cav (Middenland)] or if contested by enemy armies expand the garrison. Now this is for the start of the game where you'll need money and have almost no trade agreements. Trade becomes more important the bigger your empire gets. Don't be afraid of building something for the moment and replace it later on.
    Lastly I want to talk about your choice of giving Karl Franz the headhunter trait. Never go into that direction. At least, not with your main offensive general who will firstly, almost never stay in a city and secondly, has the option of becoming a flying monster that can slow down half an army while you shoot them to pieces or take down your enemies artillery/heroes etc. If you want stronger troops, the red skill tree offers +12 attack and defense for melee state troops. With radious' mod you can get this on lvl 3. Your second lord on the other hand is different. Use his points to get headhunter AND the administrative skills in the blue tree, give him the office of treasurer and keep him in altdorf. Your third Lord (you should recruit up to three if you want to take down marienburg) goes red again.
    I would also recommend some mods I use that work with radious to improve the experience.
    MUST:
    steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=695748248&searchtext=piercing+pistols (makes pistoliers a bit more useful...like they should be)
    steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=693684953&searchtext=region+movement (does help a bit when chasing raiding armies)
    steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=695696998&searchtext=permanent (permanent retinues...I hate it to assign all tax/trade bonus guys to my treasurer just to have them disappear for no reason).
    OPTIONAL:
    steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=700071210&searchtext=tier+4 (If you think settlements should be able to get bigger when you have a huge amount of growth and wealth. Also great for people who don't want their cities to be maxed out on turn 35.)
    I really do hope you read this post and implement some of my ideas in your game. I also would like some feedback if anyone who bothered to read all of it and has some constructive advice for me :)

    More than a year later but I just realised something that is bugging me ... youmention the hellblaster being slow on the reload. Arch, even in the pictures of the miniatures you posted you can clearly see the guys manning the gun have little wodden things that can hold cannonballs and charges for 3 barrels so they can reload 3 at once. Granted even with those, a full reload of a hellblaster would be triple the reload of a normal cannon, but still not as apocalipticaly slow as you make it out to be.
    And furthermore, it would seem productive to me to order my hellblaster to fire a full volley at the start and then order the crew to fire deck by deck, meaning they reload a set and imediatly fire it, rotate, reload the next and fire it. Which would give it the same fire rate as a normal cannon.
    And another thing to consider is the size of the cannonballs. The hellblaster shot is much smaller than that of a great cannon. So in terms of damage I'd say 3 hellblaster shots are about the equal of 1 and 1/2 of an empire great cannon (the balance here beeing a hellblaster can hit more targets but with less overall force than a cannon. so while nothing but giants and other large stuff survives a great cannon shot, a chaos knight and other armored units might get back up after taking a hellblaster hit). The reason I prefer balance aroud killing power as oposed to balance around reload is simple: if you have a gun that takes ages to reload, thanks, I'll use the one that reloads faster because no amount of damage that long ass reload provides will be enough to compensate the damage of multiple shots. And in an artilery duel, well gg you fired your 9 shots and killed one of my guns, now sit there for 5 hours reloading while I pelt you with constant great cannon shots and destroy you. And it's not fun at all to sit there with a useless artilery piece still reloading after 5 hours when the last enemy is routing. Make them all reaload reasonably fast and balance around damage and accuracy and you still have fun to use artilery. As oposed to "oh wow I obliterated that unit! Can't wait to fire this again -> battle ends. Wait, is that thing STILL RELOADING? Fuck that useless piece of shit, my great cannon batery has twice it's kill count and fired the entire battle and helped alot more, I'll just use those"
    As for the hellstorm ... yeah this one is long to reload even in universe, but that doesn't change that you could make it esentialy the grand daddy of innacurate shit and still let it fire decently fast and still be good.

      To sum it up, they shouldn't do full scale navies simply because it would require infinite amounts of "out of there own ass" design work and would be nigh on impossible to balance. Much better to just make a good Total War game first then maybe work on navies at some later date.

    What is the bonus to having a volleyed fire, over a bunch of people shooting on their own in a unit? If the same amount of arrows are released in the same time-frame, I don't see what the difference really is. If anything, the solo firing would be better in my opinion, due to the fact the individual archer will be able to aim on their own, and hopefully be more accurate than having an officer telling them which angle to hold their bow at. Am I incorrect in this assumption? If so, please explain why and correct me.

    • @willmitchell2450
      @willmitchell2450 8 років тому +5

      On a battle field there really isn't much aiming at individuals, you just shoot into the mass. Volley fire has a greater impact on morale than a fire at will order. That why you do it.

    • @CarnalKid
      @CarnalKid 8 років тому +1

      You are mostly correct, there are reasons why volley guns never really caught on historically. One huge factor is just how much easier it is to load a normal cannon with grapeshot.

    • @willmitchell2450
      @willmitchell2450 8 років тому +1

      CarnalKid Sure, but grapeshot was only used on ships. Canister shot was defiantely effective as we see when Napoleon crushed a royalist uprising in Paris. However we are not talking of volley guns, we are talking about volley fire from infantry. With muskets it is more of a morale effect than a damage effect, Fredrick II trained his grenadiers to maximise volleys. With bows it could be guessed that it was due to ammo conservation or because if 20 of your friends suddenly are struck down you are more likely to retreat than if 20 of your friends died within a 20 second time frame.

    • @CarnalKid
      @CarnalKid 8 років тому

      Will Mitchell That is incorrect about grapeshot. My mistake on volley guns vs. Volley fire though, was super high last night.

    • @willmitchell2450
      @willmitchell2450 8 років тому

      CarnalKid I think you still must be a little high as Grape shot is distinct from canister (case) shot. Grape contains larger balls so as to make ripping holes in ships easier whereas Canister shot contains smaller balls to create a larger spread and therefore kill more men.

    i don't get why demigryphs are so powerful they've only got a beak and some claws and barely any armour, one hit to the beak with any orc weapon should demobolise them pretty quickly, even a man's weapon will, same with heroes not all of them wear head armour so one missile to the face or sword to it will demobolise them surely.....

    • @addisonwelsh
      @addisonwelsh Рік тому

      The problem is actually hitting them. It’s basically a tiger the size of a horse with claws and a beak that can rip through metal. They can quite happily rip apart anyone who tries to attack them before it get the chance to swing, and even if you do hit it. And if you do hit it, a single hit from a sword or spear would not stop a regular tiger, it’s definitely not going to stop a demigryph.
      And that’s without mentioning the knight riding the dang thing

    Fun facts as seen in the first game, though.
    Your regular gypsy goblin warboss can almost two-shot your general or battle priest.
    Seeing demigryph knights anywhere is considered an illusion due to cost.
    No huntsmen, because CA suck.
    Flagellants are fun.
    Greatswords are relatively meh.
    Pistoliers are laughable, outriders are barely passable.
    Cannons' accuracy is fun, fire rate is fun.
    Mortars are not too bad.
    Hellblaster volley guns are near useless.
    Hellstorms is really cool. Their accuracy is barely worse than your cannons' accuracy...
    The Steam Tank is brutal and basically makes this race playable in the second game, but still looks kind of ridiculous. No grapeshot for anything, which is basically ridiculous and just a lack of knowledge on part of the very well paid teams at CA that are now going to China.
    Luminark of Hysh fairly useless as well. One time hits an big chaos giant, wipes half of its health, the next time, hits it and barely does any damage. Thing fires slower than old people fuck.

    The character management will be a difficult thing to get right; too much character game focus will make the mechanics of RTS suffer, too little, and the game will be bland. Named characters will probably have to be scrapped though.
    Also, A well-balanced game doesn't need unit caps. At least in campaign. The most powerful units should be so expensive and time consuming to train that it regulates itself. Also it can require the end of a particular building chain which is difficult to get. I lean to have unit availability governed by building chains rather than general level. BTW how do you imagine the "equipment choices" you mention should work?
    I think the most ridiculous units just should be scrapped. It will just be a clusterfuck of bugs, and a balancing nightmare.

    • @ArchYouTube
      @ArchYouTube  9 років тому

      I think they can put a fair amount of focus on the characters simply cuz the total war RTS formula has barely changed for 15 years so i thing they have got that part down, and yes a well balanced game don't need caps but this IS a CA game so i don't imagine were gone have that luxury!
      And with equipment choices i essentially mean that i would love to be able to customize my unites, fks at the recruitment screen i simply have a choice between fks state troop, knight or militia and then i move onwards having selected fks state troops and then i can give the unite custom equipment like a sword and shield or maybe 2x swords or halberds and no shields or pikes etc etc. (virtually guaranteed not to happen mind you)

    • @oskarastrom1644
      @oskarastrom1644 9 років тому

      Arch Warhammer I really do hope they flesh out general development. As you say there are many possibilities with customization and skills. My worry is that if you have multiple charachter, some of them mages, is going to take too much time micro-managing with all the skills and magic.
