True, Thanquol had promised the drawbridges would be down, but that had been the fault of those worthless Gutter Runners. Yes, the poison Thanquol had bought for them turned out to be so watered down as to be safely drinkable, but he had saved many warptokens. Thanquol gnawed his pale, rubbery tail, recalling how the Duke had counter-attacked, sending the Clanrats fleeing. The fool Assassin should have already slain that manling! Of course, Thanquol had reassigned the Assassin to kill several upstart Skaven in his own ranks, a mission from which the Clan Eshin agent had never returned. Such failures could only be devious sabotage! But who, thought Thanquol, would dare match wits with so mighty a personage as himself? The hidden foe must be dangerous indeed.
seltin1988 sounds good, might wanna send it up to gav thorpe or some other black library author,it might make a real good book, hell I'd pay for a book written in the skavens perspective with my left testicle and a kidney at this point, anything except the end times nonsense
Some of the Gotrek and Felix novels involve the Skaven and you get to see things from their point of view. It is appropriately hilarious. Grey-Seer Thanquol that is quoted up there is one of the main POV Skaven characters.
@@TheCorrodedMan i think thats an excerpt from the story of Thanquols rivalry with Queek whom he attempted to get killed numerous times, but ended up being foiled because no skaven had the guts or the strength or indeed the cunning to take out Queek... there was a third skaven involved as well, but i can't remember his name, only that he had a warpstone tooth that he could crack for emergency power which he did when a skaven assassin tried to gut him.
I'm still no expert myself, but here are a few things I've learned: 1. Get your hands on some Clan Eshin units. Their assassins can ambush enemies and are strong in hand-to-hand combat, and their gutter runners can outflank enemies. 2. If you use moulder units or stormfiends, buy at least three packmasters. Stormfiends especially will crush anything in their way if they're buffed with packmasters. Hope that helps you start!
@@TheCorrodedMan in the books the skaven drilling equipment stops working because of the way stones around Ulthuan. The way stones suck up magic and since all their equipment runs on warp stone it stops working.
hey congratz with your success on the channel man, recently started wtching you myself(after TW Warhammer cinematic) and you really do know your stuff, you are a great comentator and you are easy to understand and pick up information from, plus you are good at using your language and speaking in a way that keeps peoples attention :) i knew most of this cuz i love skaven but listening to you describing them kinda re-newed my love for them :) keep up the good work :)
+Arch Warhammer i for one would really like to see a video focused more on the origins of the skaven, when they date back to and first originated and also the same things for the horned rat, ie why he is worshipped, what makes him so feared and powerful etc and what abilities if any he imparts on his most devout skaven followers, keep up the good work Arch, loving the videos ;p
I'm more than half convinced that the mat for Warhammer Total War will feature both a normal map as well an underground map. You can't represent dwarves, goblins and especially scaven without it.
I love how this video made me want to play Warhammer Fantasy roleplay just to be a Skaven, thanks to this I now have an all-time favorite fantasy RPG and am a total addict to anything Warhammer related. Thanks Arch, you gave me an addiction that can only rival my alcoholism.
You mentioned in the video about the factions of total war warhammer (Geopolitics (Minor Factions) thet the skavens saved the world twice. would love to hear the story about that!
The council of thirteen isn't comprised of the 13 most powerful clans, but rather 11, plus the Gray Seers who is always granted a seat, and the final empty seat is reserved for the Horned Rat. Since the Horned Rat doesn't really go to any meetings, the Gray Seers "decipher" the Horned Rats intentions and votes for him. This basically gives the Gray Seers 2 permanent seats at the council.
Great Video man; you captured their element rather well. Although I do distinctly remember clan Eshin's leader not being Deathmaster Snikch but Nightlord Sneek who unfashionably unskaven has Snikch's unwavering fealty as outlined in the book 'Temple of the Serpent', from the Grey Seer series. Good Commentating though.
This whole question of whether or not they end up in the game baffles me. All the major factions should be available in the vanilla game. Leave factions like Kislev etc to DLC.
thus far it looks more like they are doing this in baby steps both to milk money out of this and to lessen the burden on their staff. now all we have now is the old world itself, so of course none of the factions outside the old world will appear unless they add two more whole maps to the game, which those most likely will be the major DLC's while everyone else is being released in steps.
Step 1: Release unfinished game at full price. Step 2: Finish section of game. Step 3: Sell section separately for price of a new game. Step 4: Rinse and repeat. In other news, rumor has it that they intend to release Warhammer games in a trilogy that are supposedly possible to play as standalone or together. The datamined information that was apparently correct in predicting the Beastmen and Wood Elves as the first faction DLCs also predicted Skaven to be DLC number 8. Time will tell if it is correct.
Nurglich is their Plague Lord. Head of the clan for anyone confused. I just found that out a while back. I thought Nurglich was their name for their version of the Horned One.
A race that raises warriors so fast it puts undead and greenskins to shame while having fighters so skilled and nimble that only elven warriors can match them. What's not to love?
All in all, I'd say they did a pretty good job, Skaven FEEL like Skaven in the game. Can't help but to miss the ratling gun and the snipers, but I hope they'll be coming in a DLC with the lizards (like they did with the first game). Maybe even a Lord that stays in the Old World, considering Skaven should be there even more than they are in Lustria (with luck, maybe even a Verminlord)
Lords of Terra: sending an assassin takes so much time and paperwork that the target might be dead long before the hit is authorized. Council of 13: Assassination? Yes Yes Yes Yes....and a small coffee.
A Skaven focused game might work pretty well. Starting as a lowly clan rat and working your way through Skaven society, defeating high ranking lords, buying skryre weapons and avoiding assassins.
In a Total War game; I could easily see them as a form of "Random" invasion coming directly at your doors, preceded by various "signs" such as plagues for example.
I played alot of Total War games since Rome:Total War, but got tired of the simplicity after a while, i do only play it for the massive battles and good graphics. Once i played Crusader Kings 2 and Europa Universalis 4 i realised that the depth of the Total War games are non existent, if you compare the both. Not meaning to bash Total War, but if you havent played CK2 then you should. There is a great mod for it, called warhammer geheimnisnacht. As always, great video, love these lore videos! Keep up the good work.
My one problem with CK2 and paradox games in general which i love and lay, is that they do have a learning curve that can make getting into it difficult. Yet once one does learn they are so fun.

Also, this video came out months ago now, but you better mention the doomsday device that the Skaven *lost* because they couldn't work together for 15 minutes.
Nice vid.I know im late and tbh i did not play Warhammer tabletop for a long time so im not up to date with new lore stuff but for me The Horned Rat was a manifestation of the United Chaos so chaos has 4 aspekts and they are reflectet in the 4 big clans
The Skaven were made thanks to warpstone which is the "Chaos" magic you mentioned in the video as it is pure chaos. It was introduced to the city by a strange hooded man thousands of years ago who was hired by the Humans and Dwarves of the city to help build a tower to honor the gods (a reference to the tower of babel in the bible which did not end well) but after he built it they refused to pay him and thus he closed the doors to the tower and a giant bell which he put inside the tower rang across the city and I think contained warpstone which got released across the city. I think due to the rat ancestors of the skaven proximity to it influenced thier biology making them bigger, more intelligent and more aggressive. It became so until they actually managed to kill the Humans and Dwarves in the city what would be known as Skavenblight which is in Tilea which is south of the Empire and west of Brettonia and is probably considered no mans land there. Also if your wondering about the old man he just left after the people refused to pay him so I assume the warpstone bell tower was just a backup plan incase the people didnt pay him which probably worked too well as it created an entire new race to the world. Also thier are theories that the Horned rat is in fact a greater daemon of Tzeentch or even perhaps Nurgle. Or it could be some lovechild of both gods they refused to acknowlege lol Also warpstone is now at the very heart of skaven society as it is used to power everything from machines to even a Grey Seer who sniffs the warpstone to power his magic(a reprensative of the council of 13 and thus the Horned Rat and thier version of mages). They depend on warpstone so much that they will go to war with other races just to get a supply of it.
Ohhhh a connoisseur :D did you know that the particular theory you present (found in skaven army book 4th ED if memory serves) is based on the old norse myth of Gylfaginning? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sva%C3%B0ilfari It's my favorite explanation of the skavens existence personally although it was written by a human scholar sooooo i cant take it entirely for truth ;)
Arch Warhammer I like to think that the old man in this theory is Drachenfels since he would be the type of guy to do this type of thing and has been alive when the skaven first came into existence
C Dyar That is an interesting theory! it would certainly suite his disposition both as spies and as a potential future army, but he couldn't control the skaven as either the skaven created the Horned Rat in the realms of Chaos or the Horned Rat was an already existing daemon that somehow influenced what ever spell Drachenfels had placed. Very interesting indeed.
+MidnighWolf I get massive "Overlord-vibes from that. A badass chaos warrior commanding a big platoon of Skaven as his "minions." (The Overlord-games, not the anime...)
I honestly think all the races will be added into the game but they might condense them down such as Beastmen being part of chaos and night goblins apart of the orcs and goblins and maybe some of the human factions would make a large force
Beastmen + Chaos and Orc & Goblins + night goblins could work just fine, i personally suspect we will only get 3-4 factions on launch and then we get milked like happy little cash cattle for the rest and a metric ton of unite DLC and you know what? if its proper DLC with new models and animations and well thought out and implemented factions, then i really wont mind.
Constructive criticism time! As usual the video is excellently written and you tell it interestingly and sometimes amusingly; as someone who knows nothing of Warhammer I really appreciate how these videos slowly unfold the lore etc. to me. One thing I appreciate about this video is that you changed the images a lot throughout, where previously there hasnt been much point in watching the video, just listening to it. And whilst I'm entirely happy to listen to these videos and play Mount and Blade Warband at the same time, I dont know about everyone. I think you should have a lot more images (and even videos, i dont know material's out there) and it should directly correspond more to what you're saying. Keep making these videos though :D im enjoying them
Yeah the images are somewhat problematic, a lot of warhammer art is very small in resolution (100x100 fks) so the pictures and relevance is often hard to come by so much that i have almost given up on that... i try to simply offer up some of the factions art and general feel really, but yeah your way of listening while playing something is probably the way to go.
I would say go watch "Secret of Survival in a Very Nasty World' but the characters who sing the song are weasels, although the song is kinda fitting for the skaven.
Only took you 3 minutes to convince me Skaven could never form a functioning society without wiping themselves out faster than Orks with Windex.

Such failures could only be devious sabotage! But who, thought Thanquol, would dare match wits with so mighty a personage as himself? The hidden foe must be dangerous indeed.
seltin1988 fan fiction or a book you wrote,or that someone else wrote?
James.T .Adams just something i fund on reddit, in a skaven tread dont know if its completly correct as i was going on memory when i wrote it :)
seltin1988 sounds good, might wanna send it up to gav thorpe or some other black library author,it might make a real good book, hell I'd pay for a book written in the skavens perspective with my left testicle and a kidney at this point, anything except the end times nonsense
I can see why you adore the Slaven Arch! They're pretty awesome! :D
I think the only reason I like the skaven is because I REALLY liked the redwall novels.
Whose main protagonists are of course rodents
the skaven are definetly not the good guys
I loved them the first time I saw these furry little things.
i actually love his long videos! i actually prefer him over most others, who do like 9 mins of glossing over. plus his humor is waaay amazing!
Glad you like the Skaven as much as I do! I've been collecting a Skaven AoS army the past few months, and I'm eager to see it grow.
Chris Wuebbolt tips for starting a Skaven army? I want to play tabletop but it's a lot
I'm still no expert myself, but here are a few things I've learned:
So basically Clan Pestilence is worshiping an aspect of Nargel.
your videos are sooooo good!!!
Is it just me or are the Skaven the ninja Mafia of Warhammer?
+jh44574 Just you
I like it how your favourite faction gets one of the shortest videos :P
He has two others about them. Sqweek.
Leaders: "Lords of Decay"
Active worshippers or not, they must considerably empower Grandfather Nurgle.
The Underempire has reached the Chaos Wastes?
Dante Leão the underempire is EVERYWHERE
Clan Moulder uses the chaos wastes as a citadel of power so they can use it's mutagenic winds to help make their creations.
@@TheCorrodedMan It's not under Ulthuan, since Ulthuan is a floating island/continent.
Kalenz You forget: the elves will lie about anything to save face. They were probably drowning in the buggers before the end times hit
Bernt Rørvik thank you!
13:12 im assuming they also trained some humanoid turtles in this time.
Rewatching this video for the millionth time to learn about my people
FOR REEEDDDWALLLLLLL! Wait... Thats not right :D
Thank you! I played Skaven as a kid and it was very nice to get all this lore again. You sir, get my Warpstone Tokens!
I'm sooooo very very happy, they're finally coming :D
very excited for future DLC for Total War Warhammer. I knew nothing about warhammer before the game but now learning about it, its so cool
I don't understand why this man doesn't have more subscribers.
I'm more than half convinced that the mat for Warhammer Total War will feature both a normal map as well an underground map. You can't represent dwarves, goblins and especially scaven without it.
Nice video! Cleared up some questions i had about the skavens in warhammer vermintide! :D
When he mentioned ninja rats did any one else picture master Splinter from ninja turtles
Matt M. yep :D just realized that the picture in my mind was splinter :D
Impossible to balance and super time consuming but I agree it should be way more than 5+Bretonnia
They're releasing 2 standalone expansions and a bunch of race packs which will consist of all the main factions and I'm assuming some secondary ones.
John Johnson Turns out they included five at launch. not that I'm complaining, I'll keep throwing money at CA for more races.
thus far it looks more like they are doing this in baby steps both to milk money out of this and to lessen the burden on their staff.
now all we have now is the old world itself, so of course none of the factions outside the old world will appear unless they add two more whole maps to the game, which those most likely will be the major DLC's while everyone else is being released in steps.
The horned rat sounds like a daemon or daemon prince of Nurgle.
Nurglich is their Plague Lord. Head of the clan for anyone confused. I just found that out a while back. I thought Nurglich was their name for their version of the Horned One.
Great Clan Eshin: Rat Ninjas
...why do i suddenly think of Master Splinter?
Putting together my Skaven while watching this, good times.
The music in archs old lore videos is superior to his current theme.
A race that raises warriors so fast it puts undead and greenskins to shame while having fighters so skilled and nimble that only elven warriors can match them. What's not to love?
Great video, yes yes !
Just BINGE re playing, commenting and liking (after the hack) ..
Would Eshin take on a contract on themselves?🤔
do unto others, before they do unto you
Here is a mindfuck: "Is the Horned Rat right?"
The time has finally come my little Ratlings. Me to Arch.
Who do you see as the faction leader for the Skaven in Total war when they are eventually releaed?
A Skaven focused game might work pretty well. Starting as a lowly clan rat and working your way through Skaven society, defeating high ranking lords, buying skryre weapons and avoiding assassins.
What’s wrong with Arch’e voice in this video? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Oh, the skaven are so delightfully nasty. I can see why you love them so much.
i tougth that there were only 12 council members as the last seat was saved for the horned rat
Dayum these guys make the greenskins seem honorable and trustworthy
In a Total War game; I could easily see them as a form of "Random" invasion coming directly at your doors, preceded by various "signs" such as plagues for example.
djmustang000 Or directly from your basement?
That would be brutal, I like it!
I totally dig it.
I do not know how you did it Arch Warhammer but now is skaven my fav faction
I'm surprised you didn't bring up skaven reproduction as I've heard the lore is freaky and funny.
+Firstbloodchill I play Geheimnisnacht too and Skaven are planned, get hyped!
For the mod, they haven't figured out where exactly to put them and the portraits for Skaven haven't been finished
My one problem with CK2 and paradox games in general which i love and lay, is that they do have a learning curve that can make getting into it difficult. Yet once one does learn they are so fun.
16:50 - Nurgle must've answered their prayers.
NetMoverSitan "buboes, phlegm, blood and guts!,boils, bogeys, rot and pus!,blisters, fevers, weeping sores!,from your wounds the fester pours!!!" May all know the love of our mighty grandfather☺️☺️☺️
James.T .Adams Yeah, that sounds like an authentic prayer to Nurgle.
It is my festering friend, shall we play in the slime and give thanks to grandfather together?
James.T .Adams Festering slime? Sounds like those who govern.
Or it could be some lovechild of both gods they refused to acknowlege lol
Also warpstone is now at the very heart of skaven society as it is used to power everything from machines to even a Grey Seer who sniffs the warpstone to power his magic(a reprensative of the council of 13 and thus the Horned Rat and thier version of mages). They depend on warpstone so much that they will go to war with other races just to get a supply of it.
Ohhhh a connoisseur :D did you know that the particular theory you present (found in skaven army book 4th ED if memory serves) is based on the old norse myth of Gylfaginning? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sva%C3%B0ilfari
It's my favorite explanation of the skavens existence personally although it was written by a human scholar sooooo i cant take it entirely for truth ;)
Skaven culture/philosophy are kind of similiar to the ancient Sith empire
Amusing creatures.
The Warriors of Chaos shall keep some as pets following the invasion.
+MidnighWolf
I get massive "Overlord-vibes from that.
A badass chaos warrior commanding a big platoon of Skaven as his "minions."
(The Overlord-games, not the anime...)
Arch Warhammer Not sure man, I would only like to see orcs and goblins with chaos as mercenaries like some kind of dogs of war
Arch Warhammer Well you called it!
Is it bad that I've watched this video multiple times?
Going to be interesting how they are going to work out in the game
Late to the party, but doesn't the skaven "culture" seem a little familiar? Like, the way Europe acts?
Can you make a lore video about Cathy and their relationship with the Warhammer universe ?
Skaven VS anything that isn't humans usually get obliterated.
Yes Arch, I now love the Skaven, adorable little bastards.
I've recently come to the conclusion that if North Korea were a warhammer army, they would be Skaven.
Wow! I'm not the only one who listens to videos (like this one) whilst playing Mount and Blade Warband :)
Rasmus Salén i do the samething as well playing mount and blade
I thought I was the only person who played that anymore.
please use more pictures in these videos :)
their lovable in a funny way
I would say go watch "Secret of Survival in a Very Nasty World' but the characters who sing the song are weasels, although the song is kinda fitting for the skaven.
Can you do a video about Skaven in the Warhammer Fantasy Pen & Paper? Such cool fluff
could you do a video about the skaven civel war and de war of the beards pls i'm really looking forward to it
