As a scientist, I really appreciate your approach, Glenn! My eyes (ears?) were recently opened when I bought an LTD EC-1000 with Fishman pickups and discovered that, while nice, the guitar didn't sound so much better than my cheap 2003 Epiphone LP Studio Goth. This realization led me down a path of tonal discovery that eventually brought me to your channel. I'm here to stay, so keep up the good work!
Now let me make a suggestion: I've enjoyed your blind audio tests, but I was wondering about you doing somewhat the opposite. Here are two options:
    1) Record the same Heavy Metal riff with 3-5 different humbuckers, but you EQ the tracks to make them sound EXACTLY THE SAME. Then you can talk about what you did to accomplish that and how long it took you.
    2) Record a Heavy Metal riff with a two very different sounding humbuckers, but move the amp mic for one of them to make it sound like the other humbucker. This might be a lot of work, but something tells me you could get it done pretty quickly.
As far as I'm concerned, if you can EQ or mic-move several pickups to sound the same, then the reasons for choosing which one you buy will come down to how quiet they are and how much they cost, NOT how "vintage" or "hot" they are, or what famous guitarist uses them.
I hope you find these ideas as fun as I do, and I also hope you see them as the valuable learning experiences they could be to further your Tonal BS cause.

I agree about mastering being the one part of the work flow that can be relatively easily automated via AI, since depending on your goal for the track, the various mastering styles/techniques are pretty standardized and relatively a finite number based on your goal for the track ie where you expect it to mostly be played. Mixing is still a finesse and nuanced thing because of the upteen million of options of how you want the individual tracks to sound cohesively throughout the entire track. That will be much tougher to fully automate via AI if ever.

My Ibanez J Custom had PAF pro pickups and I had trouble getting enough gain with my Line 6 HX Stomp and couldn't make them sound good no matter what I did. I'm not dismissing your tests but I definitely noticed a difference in my guitar tone when I put the new pickups in, maybe it's just the EQ difference between the Black Winter and PAF pickups.

And the phaser pedal is the old MXR Phase 90 with the script logo and no LED because it gets a better tone. Now I will say that the script logo Phase 90 isn’t quite as sharp, isn’t quite as overt of an effect as the new ones. But that is NOT tone. And the batteries thing…I dunno. I have questions. How’s it going man? Would it be possible to maybe talk a bit about floor amp/IR modelers like helix, pod go, boss gx100, tone x pedal, etc…. In the context of playing at home/recording at home? Best ways to record with those, and in terms of playing in the bedroom, is there any value in putting them through an FRFR speaker or better off just running them into the power amp in of your combo, so that your combo becomes a powered speaker, and all amps/effects/ir’s come from the pedal itself. Thanks for your work man!

    • @travisspaulding2222

If you're running it in the power amp of a combo with a normal guitar speaker, then you would want to turn the IRs off on the modeling unit. FRFR is for when you are using IRs, but a regular guitar speaker, you'd want to turn them off because you are already running through a speaker. I personally prefer FRFR because I get the variety of multiple IR options. When you run power amp and speaker, you're basically stuck with whatever speaker you're running through. However, it is personal preference.

Hey Glenn, when you move the mic from the centre of the speaker to the edge of the speaker, the sound becomes less bright. Is the movement giving a high cut, or is it more complex than that, and for example you're getting a boost in the lower frequency ranges? Cheers.

I have a question can you put green backs and creame backs in the same cabinet for a blended tone. Would it work in an x pattern or cream backs on the top and green backs on the bottom. Just curious. Great channel.

I know pickups don't make the hugest difference. But if I like my amp and speakers for the most part. If there's just some little annoying thing I can't get out of there no matter how much I mess with the gain or the EQ. And a big shift like a different speaker change might take it too far. That little difference like going from an active pickup to a passive pick up or a passive to an active might be that slight tweak I
needed. And I already had passive and active pickups 25 years ago. Thank you Glenn, I enjoy the videos.

I have Line 6 Pod xt pro that I bought when I was young and I still have it, using it as a tuner BUT I've tested the line6 pods preamp with marshall and engl poweramps through orange 2x12 and it was quite cool. :D I have no idea how good or bad the sounds are compared to real amps (I didn't do any test and was just fooling around for fun) but the sounds I got out of that old piece were actually pretty interesting. :D

Gleeeeeeeen, about cheap gear for us living in south america, a question: Can the UAFX pedals be used as external gear for mixing? I was researching about the MAX compressor pedal, it has a 1176, a La-2a and a Dyna pedal comp and I was wondering how it would perform to use as inserts on Reaper. Can you compare them with the rack unit and the emulation plugins? Greetings from Brazil!

Hi Glenn, Thanks for the great info!
I see you're mentioning the new Chinese v30 a lot as better than the 2004-2021 v30(I could definitely hear it in your videos).
Did you check if it is true for the British v30 too? I have a cab loaded with Mesa v30 and I wonder if they are worse than the new v30(I can't just compare them).
Unfortunately, I'm horrible with opening things so not going to remove the speakers just to see if they have transparent dust cap 😅

    Hey Glenn,
your content the last 2 years has realy been invaluable to focus my money and effort on getting the tones I want out of my gear, and developing mixing skills, instead of dumping loads of cash I don't have on things that wouldn't actually help me get where I want.
I have an old Zoom 9150 DSP rack unit kicking around and would realy like to put it to use. Got it from my father, who didn't need it anymore and it's been sitting in a corner of my room for half a decade.
It's just a preamp, so I'd need an IR loader to take a DI out, or a power amp and cab. Any suggestions on those last two? Haven't found a lot of budget options for a power amp, and I'd be in the market for a 2x12. I play psychedelic/stoner, so I'd go for something not too harsh in the higher frequencies, but well rounded in the lower mids. Any recommendations?
Thanks a lot, keep up the amazing work!

I started playing in the late 80's and gravitated to the scooped mids tone. When I started recording, I completely changed my approach to my amp settings and picking. Since then, my tone has mids, and I get the chunky tone from pick attack, not an EQ.
Everyone will eventually come to realize that guitars live in the midrange, unless everyone's intention is to may every record sound like ...And Justice For All, the album where bass is optional.

Tubes are funny. I run 6550’s in a FUCHS Viper. I inherited tube testing equipment from my dad so I like to see how well matched tubes are. I ordered a quad of Shu Guang 6650’s. I got the tubes for $38 each which is a good price in today’s world. The tubes were the most closely matched tubes I ever tested. They are very similar to the GE 6550 tubes and seem well built. I have had no problems and the amp has been run hard at times. The cheap tubes were better matched than NOS GE and Russian made Tung Sol.

Glenn, I would love to see how freq response graphs are created. Is an industry standard, calibrated mic needed? (due to some mics being darker than others etc so not having flat response over the full range). Is it possible to compare graphs from from 1 manufacturer to the next? IE if Celestion and Jenson tested an Eminence speaker, would all 3 companies get identical graphs? Cheers and FU

Sorry to bother you, but I have a Peavey 6505+ 112 Combo, I changed the valves for soviet 6V6 and 12AX7 ones, it came with Ruby 6L6GC and 12AX7. The noise dissapeared and the tone is way better, but I want to also change the Sheffield 12'' speaker for a tone more suitable to 80's hard rock or even hair metal, what speaker would you recomend? I didn't have money to make the swap a few years ago when I changed the valves. I have a Charvel Model 5A with a Dimarzio Super Distortion, a DIY acrilic body with a J95 in the bridge and a Dimarzio Air Norton in the neck position, and also a Steinberger Spirit. They all sound great, I use the Steinberger more than the others, it is a great guitar and it weights mostly nothing compared to the other monsters. But when I plug them to the 6505+ they sound like I am hitting a metal bucket... But when I plug them to my Focusrite Scarllet 2i2 using Guitar Rig 5 they sound really good... I want to improve that amp... hope you can help me. Thank you! Rock on and cheers from Argentina!

I spent $$$ years ago on all NOS Mullard & Amparex tubes for the AC15HW1X I owned. The difference was negligible, or perhaps any difference was from confirmation bias only. Later I had an amp tech perform the ‘Nik player’ mod which changed filtering values etc. and made a considerable difference for less $$$. Speakers are of course the biggest slice of the tone pie - as you and other rational people have said when trying to save us from wasting $$$ on gear folklore.

Glenn, would be cool to see some comparisons between a tube amp that's just been turned on and producing sound and one that is given time to "properly warmed up". I would do that myself but unfortunetely do not have a reamp box to do it properly.
