Howzit? Slang for "How is it?" , meaning how is life. First recorded in the late 70s and 80s. In Afrikaans pop culture its referred to as "Hoesit". Voetsek comes from Dutch "Voort se ek". which means "Move forward I say!" but referring to hasting cattle, horses or a donkey pulling a cart.

@@gbone7581 like a poes is a female pig, in dutch its a female cat and the word for a vagina, so it's basically the same...

"Joburg" (Johannesburg) slang, Afrikaans or English is not the same as other places in the country. People there sound strange to other South Africans. They usually just use English and throw slang in from wherever. People from the Western Cape (a province in South Africa #bestprovince) thinks they are very "kommen" (which means trashy or is sometimes used to describe a low-class white person). We are not the same as "Joburg" people. ;)

Okay let's just address this really quick. most of those words are Afrikaans it's not South African slang. More of Afrikaans slang. Pls afrikaaners, pls don't think if something is Afrikaans slang it's South African slang there's a big difference.

Voetsek sounds like "foot-sack", and it's very old. It just means "go away", though (with the implication, "leave me alone"). OK, seeing as it means go away right now or I'll klap you, I suppose it also means fokkof. (But generally it's politer. If you want to say fokkof, then you generally just say fokkof.)
Kif has been around a long time, too, (but not as long as voetsek). Back in the day, it was more common to say something was "gif" (using the "g" that only the Germans, Dutch, and Scots can pronounce - a bit like the actual "ch" in Bach). Literally "poison". And in English, people who liked to gooi heavy slang (or lank slang) would actually say "poison" for things that today are just "kif". Ay like they'd park off there, chooning, ay like poison my bru. (Could be that the positive attribute of "poison" was meant to be something like Durban Poison?). Anyway these days you don't check lank ouens chooning "gif" ekse, or "poison, my bru". I suppose it's because "gif" became "kif".
(And in French a poonda might "kif some mec" - which means she smaaks some oke, like she chooned there in this video, when she was sussing out "kif" and scheming what it might mean. The stukkie schemed quite sharp there, ekse. Probably knows some French.)
Ja, and shap-shap/ sharp-sharp is "sharp" (which is maybe just another way of saying kiff?) being fed into the Xhosa slang rules? (Where you double everything up - like Bafana Bafana - or us Amakrokokroko - or a gandaganda).
Ay, but you gotta be a bit of a fundi to make out what the okes are chooning sometimes. Anyway, I better waai (or maybe just jeet East) before some oke starts screaming TL;DR at me.
Ag man! Go join the blerrie EKonomick Freedoom Farters. Voetskek! Jou ma se ... I suppose all that kind of naai would've got them banned from UA-cam, hey? Hey? Just like skollies and tsotsis. Jou ma se Porsche man! Now it's all getting so deurmekaar soos kots in 'n tumbledrier.
Probably the most poetic swearword of them all is "naai" if you stop to think about it for a bit. Just think how the needle moves in 'n naaimasjien (and now you can't unsee it, as they say). Very poetic, whoever crafted that word anew upon their smithy.

OK, and "Jislaaik" is like "Jeepers", and other such "Jesus words", I think.
Pronounced: "Yis-like", said quick. It's a sharp exclamation used wherever other blasphemers use words like ... Crikey?
