I'm French, and this accent, is damn accurate ! Lot of French people do not make the effort to learn the accent ! (And yes we always say "euh" when we're thinking)
Not just the accent I once met a French girl who came to visit South Africa for 6 months on exchange. Her English was average at best and the entire time she was here she mostly hung out with other French people and her English barely improved. Was kinda sad.
@@jacquesstoop2587 Well, I guess the exchange was not that much to improve her English but mostly to party uh ? Many French people don't put any effort in the English accent or in English in general because at school you get laughed at if you try to speak English properly ! People are ashamed to speak English so they don't put any effort in it !
@@BrinK-s Not just that but the European French can be incredibly cruel to anyone that has a different French accent than theirs. My grandma had friends from a french community in Northern Ontario who vacationed in Paris once. They were treated so badly because of their accents that they never returned to visit France. The catch is, many of those same French who criticize others' accents don't even speak another language without an accent either.
@@mish375 Careful, Parisian French are jerks and are well known for that ! Even in France itself. I live in south west of France, and not so much people will tell you they like Paris and its inhabitants around here ! For them, their way of speaking is the norm. Where most of true parisians don't understand how it is to live in medium or small cities ! For them, going outside Paris is considered going in a rural place, like it's the countryside !
@@BrinK-s Sadly, they give all of France a bad reputation. I'm sorry to say that France's reputation on friendliness here in Canada...it's not good. I think the only big city in France I've heard of that's chill to outsiders is Marseilles. But that could be because it's a port city and used to different accents due to trade. Basically my grandma's friend said she had never been treated so badly anywhere she had ever been as she was treated in France. She said in Paris they were treated like backwater hillbillies that were uneducated. She left with the impression that she should have just communicated in English. In fact, she told me that I should never attempt to speak French with any European French person if I ever visit the country. She said if she was treated badly, then I (who am trying to learn French) will be treated even worse. I certainly have trouble with my accent and speaking as they don't focus on that in Canadian schools. But I can get by with reading/writing. Nowhere near perfect, but it's better than nothing, I guess. From what I was told: pretend you know no French at all because everyone speaks English there anyways and you'll be treated much better. Sheesh, it sounds like Paris is the same issue we have with Québec here in Canada. Even the non-Québec Francophones say they're @ssholes. They aren't the whole country, am I right?
Don't forget about Dave Chapelle...he's just as funny as Trevor, but their styles of delivery are different. Trevor, being a Millennial, is more politically correct, and Dave, well...he just doesn't give a flyin F. He is raw and uncensored.

MR Br “Boerewors” is a South African style sausage (staple food) and if you were a South African you would understand how funny it is for a French person trying to pronounce boerewors in a south African accent...

@MR Br It's hard to understand if you have trouble hearing the accent changes. He was speaking English with a French accent and then switched to what I assume is a South African accent just for the word "boerewors", which is a (tasty) South African type of sausage. I can't recognize a South African accent either, so I'm sure it was a lot funnier for the live audience.
I learnt one very important thing in this episode is the accents. 'Accent is not the measure of intelligent, but its someone tries to speak your language with the rules of theirs '. This is a bonus for me in watching your videos.
What he says about copying accents to improve communication is absolutely true, I always pick up the accent of someone as much as I can when I talk to them, it really helps mutual understanding. I read a study which basically boils down to: a Frenchman speaking broken english will on average better understand another Frenchman speaking broken english than he would an Englishman. It even goes further: that same Frenchman will better understand a Spaniard speaking broken english than he would an Englishman ! This is most certainly not true for certain languages, but for English it definitely is, and it makes sense !
I think you need to come from the same family of languages though. I understood a Polish teacher speaking English really well, because I'd apply similar pronunciation rules from Czech, while my Chinese classmate would struggle with the Polish teacher but would understand a Chinese teacher who I in turn had difficulties getting. I definitely understand natives more than many foreign speakers in English.
@@veronikalancova8602 Hmmm, I dunno the study was serious, and it's an overall result, so of course there will be some incompatibilities.. I can't seem to find the study, I think it was published in Nature but impossible to find it. This article of the BBC sums everything up quite nicely: www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20161028-native-english-speakers-are-the-worlds-worst-communicators
True, there's a video of a South African traffic officer speaking to a Chinese person in broken English (in the style that Chinese people speak), so that the Chinese person could understand her instructions. The traffic officer can speak proper English but chose to do that because that's what was necessary in the situation as the Chinese person couldn't understand proper English. I was so proud of the officer because she had learned what 'broken English' was to a Chinese people and was compassionate enough to ensure that the person she was speaking to understood her and vice versa.
Similarly, when I try to learn to speak in another language, I remember how someone (whose native language is that language) was trying to speak English. It helps me learn some of that language's rules.
Trevor, thank you for posting these videos to UA-cam. For some reason I really enjoyed seeing comedy performed by a South African to a South African audience.

Love this! As an American who used to live in Zimbabwe... I once ordered a banana shake at an ice cream parlor. The server responded, "Ok, sa, so one vanilla shake?" "No, a banana shake." "Rrright, one vanilla shake." I had to change my accent, "Sorry, one baunaanaa shake." "Ok boss, one vanilla shake and one banana shake?" "Sure." I enjoyed two different shakes that day but ordered one.
Love this haha so true though

As a Canadian who lived in South Africa I can tell you that if I didn't fake my accent OFTEN, people just wouldn't understand me. Try ordering a burger at a drive thru in a Canadian accent and see how far you get! Ahhhh I miss it so! You're always in my heart South Africa! 💓

Lol I'm South African who lives in the USA since I was 18, now I'm 44. Now I have my own accent coz I don't speak like neither South African nor American. When I lived in the South they have a country accent kinda lazy but NY is super fast. So I had to pick up everybody's accents so I have my own. When I go home they expect me to have an American accent
Can't south africans understand canadians ?
The South African trying to order a burger in a Canadian drive through isn't understood either. That's why they end up with the wrong food.

MR Br “Boerewors” is a South African style sausage (staple food) and if you were a South African you would understand how funny it is for a French person trying to pronounce boerewors in a south African accent...
@MR Br it's one of those things that you can't explain

@MR Br It's hard to understand if you have trouble hearing the accent changes. He was speaking English with a French accent and then switched to what I assume is a South African accent just for the word "boerewors", which is a (tasty) South African type of sausage. I can't recognize a South African accent either, so I'm sure it was a lot funnier for the live audience.

Oh man this guy is hilarious and intelligent too. Gotta love him 😂😍
What he says about copying accents to improve communication is absolutely true, I always pick up the accent of someone as much as I can when I talk to them, it really helps mutual understanding.
This article of the BBC sums everything up quite nicely:
www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20161028-native-english-speakers-are-the-worlds-worst-communicators
But it also makes it difficult to improve the English of the other person
Similarly, when I try to learn to speak in another language, I remember how someone (whose native language is that language) was trying to speak English. It helps me learn some of that language's rules.
Also lived in SA for some years- just cracked up when he imitated different accents from there, excellent XD

How do you lose your accent? Be Gary Oldman apparently. He's played so many Americans over the years that he's needed a dialect coach to help recover his natural speech patterns.
It isn't natural speech anymore then
@@Johnny-tq9no He obviously means original natural speech patterns. The American accent wouldn't be natural anyways because he forced himself to learn it.
@@hamstercow6219 lmao his natural speech.... there is no one natural accent.... your accent constantly changes based on what day to day speaking habits you pick up and integrate into your own speech. consciously learning a new accent is the only way to have an unnatural accent
Where’s he from?
