      @@LearnYourLand when you say bolete, do you include suillus? Are there an equal quantity of edible suillus mushrooms? I know suillus are boletes, so maybe im getting semantic, but just curious

    Dam Adam, I found this mushroom last week, and wasn't able to identify it. The curve in the stem is the feature I remember so I must have had the right mushroom, but I decided to throw it in my compost. I have thrown lots of mushrooms in my compost that I wasn't sure about so they don't go to waste. Thanks again!

    I live on the west coast and find a lot of boletes that tan to redish caps and bright yellow pores that stain blue when bruised. i see a lot of people that say this indicates a poisonous variety. I have eaten many and they are Delicious. is it possible that people are overreacting or am I crazy?

    • @robertling808
      @robertling808 8 місяців тому

      That's a myth. I eat red cracking boletes all the time and haven't gotten sick. They stain or bruise blue sometimes.

      Thanks Jason! Honestly... I don't have a solid answer for you. The latest Bessette book calls this Boletus, and Mushroom Observer accepts the Boletus name as well. greetings from eastern PA. I was glad to see another video about boletes. I have an abundance of extremely large boletes in the forest all around my, some of the caps are 10 to 12 inches across. finding them for the last month now. Could you toss me a best guess on this one? I dont think it is the 'king' the stipe does not show a white netting, more of a dark brown with black. Mild brown staining when pressed or scratched. Spore print brown.......thanks!

    Sometimes it just gets better with getting the proper mushroom in the wild, and start growing your own on specific sterilized wood, hay, or comopost substrate, ... and you can control the production and climate. Paul Stamet's YT site and www.fungi.com are excellent photo sources for showing HOW MUCH you can grow, versus continually foraging across the landscape, and competing against other humans, and the other critters and bugs beating you to the prize .... for a few mushrooms.

    • @LearnYourLand
      @LearnYourLand  6 років тому +2

      Patrick - Boletes are among the safest mushrooms to harvest for the table, though we should all know exactly which species we're dealing with before even thinking about eating them. Having said that, once you go through all the characteristics I mentioned in this video, you won't have trouble discerning between this mushroom and any look-alikes. The curved, roughened stalk is especially a key identifying feature that you should look for.
