Hallo Charlie and Friends, I retired just after covid and I am a rookie at this, have been watching your channel for about a year now, always very good thank you. I am based in South Africa, our currency is weak and getting model railway goodies is difficult. I am still getting used to terminology used in the model railway channels. I also watch Marklin of Sweden, Luke Towan, Ron's Trains and Things and even Sams Trains. I am building an Arduino controlled turntable at present. Keep up the good show, thank you.
It’s great to have you onboard Ferdi.
I follow those guys too.
Regards Charlie.
Being a cabinetmaker of 25 years you are slowly getting there to becoming a good chippy as they say looking good to Charlie really injoying watching your model come to life
My Grandad used to say, “as one door closes another one opens”. Lovely man, rubbish Cabinet maker 🤣🤣🤣
Since I am DC only I enjoyed the comment that DCC is only 2 wires. Since my layout was started in the 80's I think I'll keep the wiring I have installed. Totally enjoy your videos and look forward to the next. Thanks for your work.
First time for everything Charlie. You have made a good job of your project. Putting my helixs in has been delayed for a few month. Need a new boiler in December. A oh that's life take care. Great video.
Such a shame Iain, but I’m sure you’ll sort it in the end. Regards Charlie
Cutting outside in this weather? Now that's what I call dedication. :-) It's too cold in my flat to work on the layout indoors. Brrrr.
A lot of what you show is way over my head. But I just find your videos so interesting. Thank you so much
Really enjoy your narrative expansions and calm voice. 'Stone the crows' made me smile. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Ed, I’m so pleased that you found it interesting. Regards Charlie
Charlie, your getting me through this lunacy season with your weekly videos. Picking up a huge amount of tips when i eventually get around to building my own layout.
He’s great to have you on board for the journey Jason. Regards Charlie
Fridays would never be the same without yet another brilliant video from Charlie and seeing the progress on Chadwick.
Thank you for these videos. For someone that has taken up the time consuming hobby of model railways during the busiest time of my life working for the NHS during covid and looking after a young child your channel has been invaluable.
I’m so pleased that you have found it a useful form of escapism Peter. Keep up your invaluable work mate, regards Charlie
Very entertaining, informative and enjoyable as always. As a carpenter of 50 years there's nothing wrong with what you are doing. Look forward to seeing some trains running.
Another good one Charlie keep it up we live in boring times. After 20years of fitting Bedrooms and kitchens You stick to trains its more fun.
It's hard to believe a year has passed since I last watched this video. 'In the fullness of time' I have added some features to my small layout that make use of what you did here, and what you did here is still more useful! I never dreamed I would have use for a single-slip, over here in the colonies, but there it is. Thanks again, Charlie.
That’s great news M37, I’m so pleased that you have found the channel useful.
The layout is looking better all the time. Nice balance between playing trains at the branch station and watching the trains go around the mainline. Love watching it take shape.
I like coming back to these episodes after I've already seen it in it's current state, Summer 2022.
It’s great to have you on-board Andrew, and thanks for coming back. Regards Charlie
As a former carpenter, I will say this. you skills my not be the best, but I have seen worst in places where it will hold more weight so don't worry about it. I like that you use screws As these tend to not pull out, and as a carpenter you use what is to hand. So a good job as it works.
I shall take that as a well deserved compliment Keith. Many thanks regards Charlie
👋👍 from the Netherlands 🇳🇱 in a Lockdown and curfew
thanks for the video
Stay Safe and Healthy
Magnificent, thank-you. Very timely for my thoughts. Of course, whether they turn into reality . . .
I'm very taken with the importance of getting away from flat-earth modelling!
Of course, I now covet your digital level!
Well done both of you. And, again, thanks!
Thiis inspired me to replace a point which has given me a lot of grief over the years of operating my layout any future projects I will wire up the points before I install them once again thank you for the informative video
I’m so pleased that you found the video useful Thomas. Regards Charlie
HI Charlie
Modifying peco points As you describe also prevents short circuits with stock that has larger wheels.
I originally left the point as original and placed insulated joiners on the frog rails
However, the point blades both assume the same polarity and are thepolarity of the rail that they are switched to(if that makes sense).
There now is only a small gap between a point blade and a nearby rail and they are different polarity
A overscale metal wheel especially at speed and on a curve Will short this out . Intermittently!!! Took me
A very annoying time to Work this out.
Keep up the good work
Howard
Hi, Charlie you are a man after my own heart, I have only just found you so are binge watching whilst waiting for a shed to be put up for my second attempt at a model railway. Your videos are great with a lacing humour which we all need. Keep up the good work and I will keep watching. Cheers Phil.
Just found these videos. You had your Barnstaples mixed up, Victoria Road is now a car park, it was a lot bigger than 3 coaches 7 at least and handled through trains to Ilfracombe post war. Now engine came on the back and took the other approach line to Barnstaple Junction, shown by the main road, once handled 10 coach rains, now just a single track. Your scenery is Excellent
I live near Barnstaple and have studied the stations again and again and yet you still have managed to teach me something. Great video cant wait to see more!
I’m afraid I have a confession! I’m told that the aerial photos are not of Victoria Road station, and that Victoria Road station is now all gone bar the platform. Regards Charlie
@@ChadwickModelRailway. I was thinking there was something not right lol
Had to back track..no pun intended for this one, I still have not got a layout but the videos are really interesting, keep them coming.
Cheers Charlie, another enjoyable cuppa with custard creams, great video as usual, looking forward to watching the progress of the project.
Great to see the layout progress, brave to use a double slip, very brave on an incline, keeping everything precise as you have gives you a fighting chance. Enjoyable video once again thank you.
Yes it’s life on the edge at Chadwick! Stay safe mate, regards Charlie
that was very interesting. i love watching people paying attention to detail. thanks again. the Toulouse connection.
Well done Charlie ,another fine video..Try using a small mirror level with the track to see if the track is straight it saves a lot of bending !!!!
Awesome again Charlie. I'm really enjoying seeing the layout come together and the progress you've made since you started. Thanks for putting the time and effort in to creating these videos. All the best!
What a heart warming comment Simon, you're too kind.
Stay safe. Regards Charlie
Excellent progress Charlie ... it’s looking very nice indeed ... very informative, thank you.
Thanks Nigel I’m so pleased that you found it interesting. Regards Charlie
Another great and exciting episode from Charlie and CMR exppertly delivered yet again
Good to hear. I do like new layout.
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it Bob. Stay safe. Regards Charlie
This is looking tremendous, Charlie. The progress has been superb and I enjoy following you (and others) so much, I can't get on with my own! lol. (As for people wanting to send you stuff....... you're not hard to find!!)
All the best. Bob
Good Stuff Charlie
Always look forward to your videos
It doesn't hurt to over engineer the supports
It hurts more when your finished and problems arise due to cutting corners
Thanks for the video Charlie, I look forward to watching it later tonight . 👍
Happy 125th!! The layout is making great progress. I’ve just laid track on my layout which has a gradient too!
Harry C I'm so pleased that you found the video useful.
Regards Charlie
Hi Charlie, I have to say that i love your videos. As Someone that has grown up in Barnstaple it's really nice to see the old stations represented. I'm glad to see that someone has corrected the mix up with Barnstaple junction and Victoria road :)
keep up the great work :)
Thanks Joe, I’m so pleased that you enjoy the channel. Regards Charlie
perfect way to spend my lunch break working from home! Looks great Charlie! Going back through many of your videos as I plan an upgrade to my layout as I'm moving house!
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it Peter. Stay safe. Regards Charlie
Hi Charlie, thank you for all your videos they are very good value and inspiring. The vision of you writing in all the swear words to be filtered by your comments section is hilarious. While I'm here I'd just like to refer to your comments about giving priority replies to subscribers over non subscribers. I think this is the wrong approach because as you should be aware I am not a subscriber to your channel because of the simple reason I watch many different channels on many different subjects and don't want to be bombarded with emails from UA-cam every day. Having binge watched all your videos over the past couple of months and will continue to do so, I think You tubers focusing on subscribers even prioritising subscribers over non subs is a road to disaster. Just food for thought and thanks for the great content.
An interesting point Dr, but should invest more in folks that invest in me? Food for thought perhaps.
hi charlie love your videos i look for ward to fridays when i watch your videos all helps to keep us good in thease times good luck with the rest off your build derek
Thanks Derek, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed the channel. Regards
I love seeing the progress on your layout. Can't wait till next video comes out. I am learning so much from your videos. Thank you.
Charlie, I've literally just finished building the baseboards and upper level (only taken me two years) and have had to drill and countersink every screw, and NOW you tell me about those drill bits!!!!!!!! lol! Great wee bit of kit.
The area is coming on well, love the contrast between the incline and decline, it'll look brilliant once it's done. Cheers, John.
Charlie I am a retired Military and I owned a business repairing homes. Witch means I'm a Carpenter. There is nothing wrong with your bench work. You would be shocked at what I have found in home construction. Things are coming along great and I'm looking forward to seeing the final results. Heck I'm working on my Helix and I have a spot were the track comes out and back in and it has been a real challenge. We do what is necessary. Great update, Chris. Oh who cares about what critics say as long as we get it to work and we have know problems. 😉
I'm always impressed with your videos and your extensive knowledge. I enjoy watching and learning despite the fact that I have an O gauge 3 rail layout.
Great video Charlie and a great tip about the drill bits. I ordered them just after watching the video yesterday. They have just arrived! Cheers, George
Blimey George, Amazon don’t hang around do they. Regards Charlie
Another informative stream thank you for showing, however I have to finish watching since I have to work now will watch this later
Charlie: "I've never tried laying tracks on a hill"... then proceeds to create a hill on top of his helix! Great video, as always, but that did make me chuckle.
I’m so pleased that you found it amusing Gary. Stay safe, regards Charlie
Good afternoon Charlie great video. Its looking good. Now awaiting your next adventure with baited breath.
Love watching your videos on a particular subject before I tackle that job on my own layout, your video back catalogue is my go to encyclopaedia, so informative and enjoyable to watch...kinda makes sense 😄
this is another great video, certainly inspires one to start their owe layout as you have laid out all the steps in an easy to do way. The small segment about the points brought a small point (!) to mind about running coaches thru them . great
I’m so pleased that you found it interesting John. Regards Charlie
Another well put together and very interesting video Charlie. You make it look so easy. All the best.
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it tim. Stay safe. Regards Charlie
I love the way you layed the track on your layout the station will look great when finished. Cheers and all the best.
Nicholas.
Yet another enjoyable and informative video Charlie. It's always good to see the progress that you are making with your layout.
Charlie - Wonderful video as usual. Just getting back into modelling after many years and busily resurrecting part of my brother's layout based on Padstow. Your numerous tips have provided me now with a much more sensible approach to my layout. Too hasty for my own good!!
Please remember that planning is everything Kevin. Regards Charlie
Thanks Charlie. It's great to see the AnyRail plan becoming a reality, can't wait for the next track update. Cheers Warren
Thanks Warren, I always find your comments encouraging. Regards Charlie.
Excellent again Charlie, very informative, it’s coming on great, take care 👍
Thanks Kevin I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it mate. Regards Charlie
Another Great Video Charlie , Thank You Regards Dave
Thanks Dave,, I’m so pleased that you found it interesting. Regards Charlie
Thanks again for another great video Charlie. The detail you go into and the thought process you describe make it very easy to follow
Thanks Alan, I’m so pleased that you find it interesting. Regards Charlie
Thanks Charlie, another interesting and informative video. Watching you check your track for kinks reminded me of a great tip from track building guru Norman Solomon who suggested using a small mirror, like a ladies handbag makeup mirror. Hold the mirror against your track facing towards you beyond what you’re building and it effectively doubles the length you’re looking down. The longer view makes any kinks stand out much more. Harder to explain than do, borrow a mirror off of Mrs B and give it a try. Best regards Simon
It’s a great tip Simon, and one that I have used in the past. however, as usual I can’t find it!
Hi Charlie, thank you for your as always interesting and beautiful video! Your layout will be great! Best wishes from Germany Günter
Another great video. So good to see the plan moving towards reality. And yes I did get the reference to the need to do some planning and investigation rather than simply nailing the timbers in place.
I’m glad that you enjoyed it Lee and thanks for your help which was essential for this one. I have been watching our mutual friends videos lately and it is somewhat shocking! Regards Charlie
Hi Charlie i'm pleased to see the continued construction & trackwork on your layout, it's looks great I hardly saw any errors on camera but I was impressed with your advanced level! 😱 You're actually helping me with my about to be constructed N scale layout, the HO SCALE is really advancing in model buildings & trains this is advancing. Don't worry I'm a carpenter you're doing fine 😄. Great work. 😀
It’s great to have you onboard Harold with approval of woodworking too.
I can’t call it carpentry!
Regards Charlie.
Charlie, that is looking great. Cannot wait to see the station over the helix. Thanks for sharing and stay safe. Ken
Yes I always enjoy the videos. Have you heard from David Townend at McKinley Railway? I hope all is well with him and his crew. Ken
Things are now taking shape at McKinley we now just need our jabs.
Love this update Charlie
Looking great
Thanks Nick I’m so pleased that you found it interesting. Regards Charlie
You always present your building processes in a thoughtful way, well done 👍.
I'm a tad late getting to this video, Charlie. Everything is looking good. Can't wait to see trains running again!
Hi Charlie, loving your work. A little tip I use for checking your track is straight is use a small mirror so you can see down the line without have to be a gymnast look down to see if the track has no cinks in it.
Looking forward to the next video
Are use a mirror too, however as usual, I can’t find the wretched thing. Regards Charlie
Great video as always, great inspiration to me as well. Stay safe during these difficult times. Liam
You've done a power of work Charlie, My own new highland layout is at a standstill after falling over our Labrador on an icy path. So bit bruised and sore. Still it gives me time to watch your progress. Look forward to another video.
I’m pleased that you enjoyed it David.
do take it easy, regards Charlie
Another enjoyable video and I have now purchased one of them digital levels, as I need to sort out one of my inclines on the layout as some trains make it and others don't. Always find your videos helpful and informative. All the best ,stay safe John.
I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it John stay safe mate, regards Charlie
Although I have a Hornby Dublo 3-rail layout, I really enjoy your videos. And thanks for the tip on the drill bit/countersink combo - just placed my order with Amazon.
That’s something that you certainly won’t be disappointed with Martin. Regards Charlie
Great work, Charlie. Cutting the upper board back a little to allow for the embankment/retaining wall is a good move I think - look forward to seeing that. Love the detail of easing the slope near the top too.
I’m so pleased that you found the video interesting Tom. Regards Charlie
Wonderful yet again Charlie, love the drill come countersink tool, gotta get some of those..
Remember copydex I used to let it dry on my fingers and roll it into a ball. The layout is looking great Charlie.
Thanks Mark, I’m so pleased that you enjoyed it mate. Regards Charlie
Charlie , great video, I am very close to start laying track on my first layout , I also like learning the terminology of UK stuff vs Canadian (timber vs Lumber, droppers vs feeders and sleepers vs railway ties )
Hi Charlie. Hope you and all your family are well? That was really interesting on how you’ve built a small ramp so as it’s not all on the flat lands. Barnstaple junction station in its day was fantastic and glad your replicating if only in a small way. I can recall visiting the station back in 1974 as my Mum lived in IIfracombe but unfortunately I had to catch the bus as the line was closed but not lifted. It’s a shame it didn’t get preserved as a heritage line. I think they tried but didn’t have any success as the line has gone now 😫 Take care until the next exciting episode of Chadwick. Cheers Stevie.
I really like your track plan for the yard that you showed. I may copy it and use it on my N gouge layout.
Brilliant as per usual young Charlie and you can never be over engineered enough me ol m8! 🤔
It really is Blue Peter with choo choo trains 😆 🚇 🚝 🚆 🚅
Another excellent video Charlie very entertaining and very informative
Really enjoy your videos
Cheers
Charlie, thanks again for a very interesting and informative video. This is model railroading at its best. Please consider the following request. The next time you do a video on scenery, if possible, offer some advice/techniques on the inclusion and construction of a road. A simple dirt road or paved road would be appreciated. Thanks again for what you bing to this hobby. - Paul
The next scenery video is out tomorrow Paul. But sadly there is no road construction in it but I will keep it in mind. Regards Charlie
Hello Charlie, greatly done like allways - thank you for this video!
What I do is a look into the future and I do see a problem coming on to your layout. As the additive piece of scenery over the heating sounds a good practical idea - but that's the point where the teeth of time will start to work.
The fixing
What about adjusting it by cheap magnet foil stripes glued on the board on the one side and counterpart it by cheap iron screws on the other to get a good join? It can be easily removed from the board and will pop in the correct position due to the magnetic force.
So you can go on with an open frame lightwight building technology and having an easy and secure locking of this critical part of the layout.
The theet of time
As it will be touched quite often what about to use an real brench of wood? By taking it upside down you allways get a stem. By cutting it at a joining you get the impression of the routs starting to spread into the earth - and just breating off it somewhere above you will get the effect of a tree hit by a lighting - with removed bark. (I tested it on scenics for tabletop quite often to move bigger units.) By removing parts of the bark you can glue the rest bya little amount of superglue running between bark and tribe. So you maybe getting some scenic intrest into the background and a proper handle for the removable part over the heating's gap that is touched hundets of time a year. As you have to the lean all over the layout a precise fitting is not allways possible. So a repaintable item oaround the front side like a tiny retaining wall or something else easily to repaint may be a good idea. As we all know as gras over the years will be rubbed off to its undergound - looking at the edges of older exhibition layouts may give you some idea what I am talking about.
So I hope this may be helpful.
I am very thank full you didn't screw the board heavy forced on the u-beams so thy would wrap into stairs over the time due to a lack of beveling the supporters surface by sanding it parallel to the increase of the board.
Wonderful project you do and an entertaining time every week when I will get a good footage BBC and the others can not longer reach on in charming and intrest and quality.
Yours, Chris
What a fascinating comment Chris, many thanks. You have made some excellent points regarding the removable section and I will give it much consideration. Stay safe, regards Charlie
@@ChadwickModelRailway Thanks a lot, Charlie, if I could ne helpful I would appreciate that very very much.
Charlie you continue to amaze, you still make it look so easy, soon I hope to start mine and will be following your tips and advice, brilliant job 👍
Charlie, the ariel views are of Barnstaple Junction, not Victoria Road. By the way, you need a trap point between the double slip and the goods yard, to protect the passenger-carrying lines. You could always just insert a dummy one if you like. Looks like you'd have room for a headshunt though.
Oh dear, I'm in trouble this time. Thanks Peter, regards Charlie.
Especially with the falling gradient!
Rest assured I’m on to it!
eBay purchase complete. 😜
I was thinking the same thing!
As always Charlie enjoyable factual and inspirational to watch, a lot of track work could have been avoided though as you stated early on that Dr Breeching had rationalised it , so a single line alone with DMU operation would be fine, please forgive my silly sence of humour and thank you again for your Great video's.
