No doubt about it: The Byrds in their original incarnation from 1965-1967 were the greatest American group of all time and Gene Clark is the most under-recognized genius in the history of R&R!

I don't know what his background was as a drummer but I saw the Byrds in concert and he did fine. The truth is, you can't take David Crosby too seriously. His ego was the reason why Gene Clark played tambourine instead of guitar and he later tried to take control of the group. That ultimately led to his dismissal from the group.
The Byrds covered Dylan a few times and gave the songs a whole new side, their harmonys were something else. They inspired many bands of the last 30 years esp from the UK..
The Byrds didn't "cover" Dylan songs. McGuinn REWROTE them often working from rough demo recordings provided by Dylan's publisher. Dylan pitched "Tambourine Man" to them in order to get them to record it. Byrds manager Jim Dickson was a Dylan fan and Peter, Paul and Mary already had a hit with their RENDITION of "Blowing In The Wind". "Covering" a tune is when someone tried to copy someone else's hit. Dylan didn't even recognize the Byrds versions when he heard them live but kept providing them with unreleased demo's up to 1969.

The music and times were and are FAR better than anything today. If you disagree, then I wish you luck in 2022.
No doubt about it: The Byrds in their original incarnation from 1965-1967 were the greatest American group of all time and Gene Clark is the most under-recognized genius in the history of R&R!
What you said cannot be contested. Correct on all counts.
I couldn't agree more, Gene Clark was a genius songwriter, singer and guitarplayer
Totally agree !!! 👍
Roger is very underrated also.
@@JoeKoOhNo I totally agree with you! Whether he be Roger or Jim, Monsewer McGuinn's prowess is VASTLY underrated! I much prefer his approach to the guitar than the generation of over-indulgent and over- deified blooze wankers who made the late-60's and the first 2/3'rds of the 70's such an ordeal for me.
This is my favourite version. What a classic

Byrds is the word. Byrds, byrds, byrds is the word.
Thanks to Ed Sullivan we can reminisce to the best sixties music.
The best part is Michael Clarke miming along behind McGuinn and trying not to laugh.

Bit of a lopsided hollow victory. This century's a twenty year old and as long as groups like The War On Drugs keep coming along, a band that likely eclipses in talent and creativity many of the groups you dote on, there's every possibility that this could be a smashing 100 years!

Yes, and the hair styles are interesting. Long hair seems to have been quite popular back then.
This dazzling haunting song was released during March 1965, 9 months before Rubber Soul was during December 1965 and so Mr Tambourine Man is a strong contender for being the very first psychedelic rock song.
It was one of the first songs to be dubbed folk rock in the media
Love Roger McGuinn's voice. His vocals really suited this classic song.
McGuinn's little blue sunglasses were iconic.
That Dec of 65 my dad was on his first Tour as a US MARINE in the city of Hue . He ended up doing 2 tours his heaviest battle was Khe Shan in 68 he finally came home Feb of 69. He was with 3rd Batt 26th Marines INDIA Company as an F.O. Calling in Air strikes. We lost him in 2005 to Leukemia due to Agent orange .

Boy I've been waiting for the last 9 years to see this whole footage. It finally came!
i know that feeling
Wow!! That long?? Why??
Because many videos in Ed Sullivan's channel were uploaded just for a few seconds, and it had happened for many years. The unnoficial channels that tried to post the whole performance of the song were blocked by UA-cam. So I have been waiting since 2012, and luckly this channel started up posting whole songs and not just few seconds.
@@victorhugobarcelos1523 whoever's in charge of the "Ed Sullivan Show" archive probably realized that there's a lot more money in UA-cam streaming now than trying to sell DVDs. That's likely why they used to only post short sections of the clips to encourage people to buy the DVD set.

@@marks.3303 He wasnt exactly the best drummer ( Quoting Dave Crosby), but he held his own and looked good behind the kit..
@@samburkes7552 Mike Clarke was added to the group because of his resemblance to Brian Jones but he still played the drums well.
Don't forget Ringo
David is Leo. Leo men always want to be the leader.

Oh jaaa - once a hippie, ever a hippie - Hello from Berlin, Germany 😍
I was 5 months old when this performance took place on Ed Sullivan. I'll also never forget meeting David Crosby in LA and shaking his hand 35 years later.

Byrds were the first US band to start wearing their hair like the Beatles and Stones, but they weren't the last! Lol. Anyway, this is SUCH a great, groundbreaking song for them. That jangly guitar and laid back vocals were brilliant!
Actually the Beatles started that, of course it was a hairstyle but it was worn by Indians over 100 years even before the Beatles, the stones just took their hair and so did all of the other people.
Yes, they certainly were!! Definitely laid a precedent with this style of electr. folk rock!! Happened at the very right time!!
The Beatles haircut began as a imitation of some german avant garde artists that combed their hair to the front as the ancient romans.
All of this time I thought they were British.
It was actually the Standells in 1964 who started it doing it first. But The Byrds popularized it, no doubt.
The world is filled with too much hate and anger.
The Times we are living in, are not worthy of this sound.
Perhaps one day it will be again. The world has never been at peace but people were never this angry.
Full agreement with that, 👍👏👏👏👏🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼
1965 was hardly a peaceful time either. Filled with segregation and the rising of the Vietnam War, those songs were the refuge of a generation in clash with the world they were growing up in.
When music was music.
Hi Lorraine
Ignorant comment.
There is so many great music out there today. I'm a huge fan of psychedelic rock myself, and there is so much great stuff out there to this day. In the late 90s BJM released their Satanic majesties second request, Wich gotta to be one of the greatest "60s" albums ever. Or underground bands today like the Bonnie Nettles, psychic ills, the knee highs, king gizzard, and so so many more. It's there just search a bit, you'd be surprised how many people still male amazing music.
I was eight years old when this song played on the radio. It was a really big hit, and even now, when the song starts, I always get chills. The music during the sixties was just so good, it's really hard to describe. Of course, the chills turn to tears because I now know how it all ended, but for my eight year old self, it's really only the music that mattered...
It's only 2 minutes of pure ear paradise. Why the euphoria moments in every sight of things are so short -_-
My mother bought me an electric 12ztring for my 16th birthday just so I could play the Byrd's so gs. I still have the guitar in mint condition and still play their find in my concefts every month. Great group.
