Yeah, I'm not stopping autoimmune protocol. I already reintroduced a couple things and I think I'll be able to reintroduce a lot. Luckily I'm a good cook but I also usually have an easy plan b ready for when I'm feeling lazy. Hashimoto sucks and this is the closest I've ever been to healthy, I lost 7 kg in 6 months and I'm still losing weight. My only issue is having a small stomach so it's hard to reach my daily calory intake, but that has nothing to do with AIP. I don't think I'll ever stop, it'll even get easier when I start living alone, away from temptations. I occasionally give in by taking a bite of something I shouldn't eat because exercising willpower for too long isn't good, but nullifying months of efforts is worse. I don't feel too guilty when I do because I know it's good for my mental health at least. It's the same logic I apply to the use of NSAIDs. Sure, I might get diarrhea later, but at least my headache is gone and I can actually function that day.
The 80 % veggies to 20% meat ratio in paleo resulted in 8% body fat and a 6 pack but the veggies ended up causing plant toxicity as Sally Norton explains as oxalate poisoning.
So I use to do the paleo diet, followed Mark Sisson for over 3 years, it fixed my stomach problems also and I felt great at first and it was really fun eating this way, but unfortunately, I just didn’t work out for me, I ended up with real bad depression, feeling constantly tired, frequent headache’s, stinky breath, kidney stones and then erectile dysfunction after about 18 months on it. And I am only in my early 30' and I know that's not normal! It was quite scary, and I had to stop.
I never comment on things but I 100% agree. I eat an anti-inflammatory diet. That's it. Which is real food. Every now and then I'll eat raw dairy and I have no guilt about it. I avoid processed sugar and gluten because it does me no favors. We need to eat for nutrition and also for our soul 🥰. Stress is inflammatory so stressing about food doesn't help me. Loved this video!
You are doing it right, I always have luck on the paleo, the "heaviest" meat I do is chicken, I do mainly anything from the ocean...mainly salmon, shrimp, scallops etc. I eat up to a pound and a half in one setting along with a small amount of vegetables...I don't touch fruit
This was interesting. I've followed you for a long time. I was surprised at first but then, we all have a right to evolve and we should be evolving. There is no One Way 100% for all. We're all different and things working differently for us all. I love the "real food' comment because that in and of itself is a huge step if people aren't doing that. Thanks for your honesty.
I can agree w this video. I have changed my philosophy of nutrition and training along the years and, like you, I used to think Paleo and CF were the holy grail of fitness. I still love CF but given some sports injuries it’s not the best for me in THIS season of life and, regarding nutrition, I’ve learned to put more emphasis real food overall and still being able to have a real brownie or cookie when I really want it. Awareness is empowerment! Pow! 💥
Right there with you!! I was just telling my husband last night at dinner that it’s so nice to have real bread and not worry or obsess over it. Doesn’t mean I’ll have it all the time, but that flexibility and awareness are so nice to finally have ❤️
Great advice - just eat real food and what works for you! I've been following you about 10 years. I started when I was doing Crossfit and did the Paleo diet strict for about a year. I have an eating disorder history and the strict paleo just fed into my restrictive eating. I loosened up my eating over the years and now eat what feels right and don't follow a specific type of eating. I also don't own a scale which helps a lot so I go on how my body feels rather than a number on a scale. My diet also changed once I had kids a few years ago and it's definitely more relaxed on the whole foods then I would like but we'll get there! I've loved following your journey over the years and congrats on the baby!
I love you Julie and appreciate your authenticity. I've been following you since the beginning and have enjoyed so much watching you grow and adapt. I've been right there doing the same and have been grateful for your outspokenness about your personal experiences. I'm so glad you're still here in the public forum providing great information. Thanks for all you do!
Thank you so much for sharing this. As you can probably tell by my screen name, I'm in the gut health field. I come from SCD background, but recently have been exploring more diversity, especially as I see other struggle with thinking it's their fault if they still don't feel well, or like you mentioned, binging on processed foods or foods they know will make them feel sick because they have been restricting so much. I'm still working on that balance of not being so restrictive, but maintaining health. I've been in remission from IBD with only one mild flare in over 20 years.
20 years is amazing!! And the balance is a tough one to find, especially if you’re worried about a flare. We are constantly getting to know our ever changing bodies so I feel you with always looking for balance throughout
Thank you for your honest and vulnerable video. I have had the same issue with any restrictive kind of diet. I think a lot of people struggle and think that if they just find the right diet…not knowing it’s the diet mentality itself that’s the problem. Very happy for you that you’ve found a healthy balance!😊
I've tried paleo a few years ago and lost 60 lbs in 4 months..I then found the disadvantage of paleo, only one disadvantage is the fact that lean meat breaks down plant carbs and plant carbs breaks down lean meat protein, creating a constant cycle of metabolism the more weight I lost the faster my metabolism worked, what happened was I began to eat the way I used to because I simply couldn't handle my body's metabolism. Gained all the weight back plus 20 pounds heavier...2 months ago I got back on it after researching why things happened the way they did, I'm down 3 full pant sizes and I can basically fit into the next pant size lower but it is to tight ...so I tried something different and added more fat to feed my out of control metabolism at this stage of my weight loss that I was last time, and bingo, it worked and I'm still losing weight, ALSO (and this is huge), toxins are also at their most concentrated in the underlying levels of fat when you hit those levels, those chemicals will make you feel like you are hungry and will give you strong urges to eat whatever...STOP...grab a big glass of water and chug it down..then continue your paleo quest and increase the amount of fat ..eat two of your favorite lean meats or grab a keto chocolate bar with clean ingredients works out grand for me..it's basically a big bar of nut butter...this is the best splurge ever when you add both and the awesome part of this is when I splurge very rarely do I pass 1200 calories..(here is a gem about calories) well it doesn't matter about calories because your calories are all nutrient dense they are the right kind of calories that sustain you (500 calories is my norm usually and one meal lasts me all night and into the next day until I need to eat again at about 3 pm). You can splurge on this "diet" and still lose weight..here is another "splurge story" I went to a hibachi restaurant and grabbed salmon, scallops, filet minon, vegetables, and half my sisters salmon because she was getting full, basically almost a whole bottle of wine, and some egg noodles, about an hour later i had so much energy it was crazy, and I still lost weight .:) good luck to all of you who are doing this...I am in my late 40's but feel like I'm in my late 20's early 30's
I totally emphasize with you saying you couldnt imagine not doing the Paleo dier. I was also in too deep with the exercising and rigid paleo meal prep. Its so draining to stick to one thing! Forget how to live and breathe easy but its just trial and error ❤❤❤
I so needed to listen to this! Thank you! I’ve recently come off keto and am now just trying to eat real food that nourishes me and makes me feel good. The guilt from no tracking or breaking my food rules is real, but so was the stress that accompanied all my tracking and restricting. Thanks again!
Thanks Juli! I recognize so much of what your saying. I stuck with Paleo for a looong time and at first it really did help me but the more I saw results in my work outs the more I wanted to cut back on things in my diet to see even more results. I was restricting so much! And in the end it led to hypothalam amenorrea (lost period) for like two years. Paleo can maybe help with some things but now I'm living a more healthy life with a balanced diet.
Yup. That was me. Obsessed with CrossFit back in the day (and when I began following you, Juli 😉), then I moved to bikram yoga, then bar method, then boxing…the list goes on and on. I’ve also tried all the fad diets, loved paleo and keto, but I did alter them to what worked for me. We are now continuously working on eating “clean, real food” and not grabbing the junk at the store. A nutritionist once told me to shop only the perimeter of the store and never in the middle cause the perimeter carried the healthiest options for you. If you think about it, it’s true. That’s where all the meats, dairy, and fresh produce are. We tend to eat most meals in because we can control what’s in them. But I’m a foodie at heart and love eating out. So, that’s been the part I miss. It’s a work in progress, and with young kids, ever evolving. But we’ll get there one step at a time. ☺️
Eating at home always feels best, but it’s so fun eating out and getting inspiration…and taken care of. Especially if you’re cooking all the meals home, it’s just so nice to have someone else cook for you. That health journey always seems to be a work in progress, I’m sure especially with kids involved
I too am in the process of evolving in my food choices. I used to eat stick paleo in fact i have one of your cookbooks. I do still eat grain and dairy free because i do become ill when i eat them. But have branched out into beans and lentils, and even some vegan dairy. There are so many great grain free choices now in breads and crackers now that i feel fulfilled mostly. I still occasionally find myself over the toilet if someone cross contaminates my food or is ignorant about the food contents. Yes people do really get sick when they eat certain foods and sometimes it infuriates me that people take this lightly like i am on some fad diet. I actually gained weight eating a paleo diet due I believe to the high fat content encouraged in eating this way. I feel much more satisfied eating this way now and keep pushing the envelope to include other whole foods. I have since lost weight and feel so much better. Happy to hear you are evolving also 😃
Loved this video. I’ve been following you from the beginning, my way of eating closely follows your past 11 years and as much as I loved paleo over a decade ago, nowadays I do not restrict and I eat real food! Thanks for sharing your journey and tips along the way!! And for continuing to put out amazing recipes
I love this ! If we didn't evolve that would be sad! I was semi-strict paleo (80/20) for 5 years and fell off the wagon. It was the best I have ever felt in my life. I currently still strive for many paleo options for this purpose but I am not strict. I think a good balance is needed, so I aim for it because I know how amazing my body responds but I have tried giving myself more grace in this constant struggle with my health and weight. Otherwise I'm just beating myself up.
I respect this and embrace the fact that things we needed dont serve us anymore. I used to be so paleo, and though i am not it did bring me more awareness around better meat and more veggies in my life. I mean you change your mind and want kids now! :) Cheers Juli!
I just recently stopped doing cross fit… I realized that I love lifting body building style… I never thought I’d not be a part of a CrossFit community after over a decade of WODs. I also stopped paleo… girl! You are singing my song with this video.
When I first did paleo/crossfit, it completely changed my physique. Over time, I felt the impact of Paleo was less and I actually began to put on weight. A lot of Paleo recipes have too much fat IMO
Me too! Not CrossFit but running and paleo. That was 6 years ago. I spiraled into keto as I have migraine/seizure disorder that struck in my forties. My cholesterol was 263 when I last had it checked. I know some say not to worry about cholesterol but I cannot I’m clear conscience keep doing it. I am not a person that eats bacon butter and fat fat fat and still have it. So I’m switching it up-walking, adding in some strength, and eating more intuitively. It’s going to be a process. But yes-less fat as well for me.
I don't get why you are claiming Paleo is so restrictive. Dr. Cordain encourages the 85% 15% rule, which equates to about 3 carefree meals a week. Further, they have created so many "paleoflex" meals on top of it. Also, you mention how you learned about organ meats AFTER paleo. That is quite perplexing since Paleo highly encourages organ meat.
fantastic video (with the exception of supplements in my opinion). life is about balance in all aspects in how you live with the current human inventions in food and technology and etc. i cant believe how fast ive grown through these stages as well since i am about to turn 16 in august. thanks
Yes to all of this! OBSESSED with crossfit, mostly for the community. When I had to move away from that I lost the passion. I don't miss beating my body up though! I also was hard core paleo for years and years but now have grains and dairy again. I enjoy the balance and freedom much more.
Excellent video, and an eyes wide open approach to nutrition. Grass-fed meat, pasture raised chicken and eggs, raw milk, cheese and organ meat. Add some sweet potatoes, fruits and vegetables. Sounds like a human, omnivore diet built around single ingredient whole foods. Bravo!
Thank you for sharing this, and I think this needs to be normalized more! I similarly was really into Paleo in college, which worked for me as someone who was lifting a lot and wanted to "eat clean" in college, but I found that I was eating more calories than necessary. I since have switched to a plant based diet and I'm now an endurance cyclist/runner. The rich-ness of carbs and veggies in a plant based diet go well with endurance - and I've never been leaner! I do have to stay on top of protein intake though. :) One day I hope to get pregnant, and I will likely introduce some meat back into my life but not as much as I ate when I was "paleo". One diet does not fit all, and sometimes many diets will fit you over the course of your life.
I'm in the same boat. I started my website because I found a love for cooking and eating for fuel through paleo after years of eating disorders and loved creating content and recipes. But over time it seemed that I was almost orthorexic with how restrictive I was. Now I just focus on clean and whole foods and live 80/20ish. Plus I have too many medical issues with my head to focus on planning my food too much right now.
This sounds exactly like my food, wellness, and fitness trajectory 😂 The only thing I really do have to avoid is wheat because it's my big migraine trigger. I still LOVE paleo recipes, but also started raw milk and figuring out how to work organ meats in. I haven't done CF in a gym since ours closed, so it's been neat trying different workouts that I might have scoffed at ten years ago.
I noticed that diet can almost turn into a religion or cult for some people (including me). I was a super passionate vegan for years but was diagnosed with severe ulcerative pancolitis and my surgeon said veganism would kill me if I didn’t change. I remember thinking what does he know? It is amazing how this obsession/passion for a diet can totally cloud our judgement sometimes and make us even sicker. That is about the time I found your blog! I found Robb Wolf’s book on the paleo diet helping UC patients and I think I googled paleo recipes and came to your site! I have been a follower ever since even though I have also changed from paleo and just eat what feels good now. I just don’t know how I lived so many years without a warm bowl of oatmeal! Haha
Oatmeal has been one of my favorites during pregnancy! And you are sooooo right about diet turning into a religion. It’s so easy to think that you have to follow something to a T to really experience all the benefits…even when your body is telling you the opposite. Been there multiple times and things are much easier when you actually listen to your body!
The main reason why I quit Paleo long time ago was acutally very simple: It was WAY too time-consuming! I did not have the time for all that cooking, baking and food preparation! It did absaolutely not fit into my busy daily schedule. 😂
Anyone here have RA? Everyone says go plant based vegan like Paddison diet etc but I just don’t want to! What about paleo? I want to put my RA into remission! 😢
I couldn’t agree more with everything you said. It’s ok to change and evolve. For me it’s because i got older and hormonal changes. I still do bodybuilding but changed the split. As for diet I listen to my body more and and focus on sleep and recovery.
For me following paleo you learn how to cheat paleo. . I eat real food but now I don’t feel bad about cheating. Because I always go back to eating clean.
I really relate to this video! Thank you for sharing. 10 years ago my autoimmune disease was in full force and a strict paleo diet pushed it into remission and I lost 20 pounds in the process. It was amazing! Now, 10 years later, I have tried the paleo diet again but I’m almost 40 and my body chemistry has changed, especially my hormones. Sometimes I eat a big bowl of gluten free oats and berries instead of meat and veggies, and that just feels better to me and nourishes me. I’ve learned to not be as strict and yes, just focus on whole unprocessed foods, even those not allowed on paleo.
yes but overall people shouldnt just follow one label, i became vegetarian, then i quit smoking and alcohol, then refined sugars, got into paleo, then i started eating whole grains because body needs it by doing overall more n more research outside of lables, then now im vegan, eting whole grains, not eating refined sugars, also eating only gluten free / paleo flour . everything wholesome, people just become aware what your body asks for, u r craving sugar? go eat an apple, u want pizza?- go eat avocado. u know the natural afts, refresh your bodies with what is within those foods that you r craving into natural healthy version of it, check what foods that u r craving contains and switch it up into healthy version, easy peasy. fast from time to time but DO A LOT OF RESEARCH , be smart and mindful about what u r doing. do wim hof breathing, take cold showers, excersise, meditate, do yoga , become aware of what body is overall, read about metaphysical points of body and illnesses. all of it is all one, goodluck darlings, i didnt even watch full video and i never follow this lady or overall theese things, i guess just came here to say this, either way going with the flow. try to read also about mucusless diet. sooo many perceptions so many ideas, create your own diet, everyones body is unique, follow your own body, not someone elses idea ABOUT YOUR BODY you know your body best, your body leads u, time to listen
Paleo breakfast is ridiculous- I don’t have time to make Paleo friendly breakfast ( like baking my own Almond flour muffins or pancakes) but I can’t eat bread or even simple crackers or biscuits- and I can’t eat yogurt or shakes because it would give me stomach ache- I might as well keel over and died
Thanks for this, Juli! I've followed you for all 11 years and I so appreciate seeing the changes and growth.
Awwww thank you so much Erica! And thank you for following along throughout all the changes!
Hi Julie I am a functional medicine practitioner. Nice to hear how this guided you to guilt-free living. 🙂
Yeah, I'm not stopping autoimmune protocol. I already reintroduced a couple things and I think I'll be able to reintroduce a lot.

more animal foods a better for digestion and overall health
This right here is what I’m tryna figure out more plants or less meat

1000%! I think it’s so easy to end up in that stress cycle around food which inevitably causes more health and gut issues

I needed this message this morning.
Thank you so much for sharing this. As you can probably tell by my screen name, I'm in the gut health field.
Right there with you. Balance is way more fun!
One day I hope to get pregnant, and I will likely introduce some meat back into my life but not as much as I ate when I was "paleo".
One diet does not fit all, and sometimes many diets will fit you over the course of your life.
Exactly!! We continue to change so our lifestyles and diets should change with us!
That orthorexia is real and easy to fall into. I’ve definitely fallen into that
I’m currently on a Paleo diet and I’m finding it too restrictive. Nice to know I’m not the only one who thinks this
This sounds exactly like my food, wellness, and fitness trajectory 😂 The only thing I really do have to avoid is wheat because it's my big migraine trigger.
Lmao youtube...type 'paleo' and there will be 10 people saying its great and 10 people saying its shit 🤣
Doesn't Loraine promote the 85 -15 percent diet?
Yes. I dont get why she is acting like Paleo is "so restrictive." Its not.
Sleep and recovery is KEY!!
"pasture raised"....the CC wrote pasteurized. Great video!
Ok so name change ideas…. Juli good booty, Omg lifestyle, the omg life
Love the omg life!!!
Go Rams!
