The best live record quality of a van halen, that I've ever watched, but this also shows why this guy different than you and me, will be remembered for the very future. He changed the music and then the industry, and so the culture
This is the first time in all of these years I even bothered to check out any of these VH vids with Gary Cherone as I kind of lost interest after DLR and then even Sammy Hagar. Have to say that for those criticizing Gary Cherone, well you're entitled to your opinions. I didn't expect a carbon copy of DLR but was pretty impressed with the amount of energy and enthusiasm Gary had singing these old classic VH tunes. Furthermore, is Eddie's playing off the hook or what?!? Holy Shit!! That guitar playing was like a fire breathing dragon burning down everything in its path. Can see that he was playing the Peavey Wolfgang in this vid but what amp's and effects was he using on this tour-anybody know?? Eddie's guitar tone and playing was absolutely fucking killer!! Don't think i've ever heard it sounding better than this. This had to have been the Peavey 5150 heads all the way I'm guessing.
Yeah his peavey 5150's - effects wise he had a flanger, phaser, wah wah pedal, 2 delays (with tempos set differently) and a eventide harmonizer (which he really used on that tour - last time he used the harmonizer was the Balance Tour )
I bought a 5150 slant cab the year they came out. It arrived with a dead XLR jack but other than that, I'll NEVER let it go. It's HEAVY as fuck (they compressed 11 plys to the thickness of a Marshall 7 ply cab) but it basically means you can fire your bassist as it growls AND has bottom.
If they would have done this like Gary suggested by going out on tour and showing everyone the band and getting people used to the new line up I think it would have worked. Eddie wanted to put out an album then tour. Gary could have really worked out by being able to sing DLR and SH plus his music with VH. This concert shows how incredible they were and how he filled those big shoes easily. Gary deserves more credit! 🤘🏼
Man, never thought about it this way, but I think you're 100% correct. Unfortunately, I'm sure it was more than Eddie. The whole industry operated like that at the time: Album, then tour.
Every band that gets a new singer wants to make new music first. Otherwise, they risk being labeled a cover band or accused of resting on their laurels. They made the right decision to make an album first. It simply didn’t click with the public, arguably because it just wasn’t as good as the DLR and Hagar stuff.
@@imelvino - The OP is saying they should’ve toured on the Dave and Sammy catalog before doing a new album with Gary. However, a true blue artist like EVH is always about “now”, rather than “then”. If they had toured with Gary before recording new songs, they risked being labeled a cover band and I’m sure that mere thought made Eddie cringe. I imagine Gary was excited to put his stamp on the band, too, with new material. Personally, I just don’t think the public wanted a third singer in VH - they wanted prime Dave, but that shipped had sailed, as the Different Kind of Truth tour proved.
I'm so glad I seen gary shiron with van halen I got to see a different side. Of what it would sound like. And thank you for that. Tell you the truth, I’d rather listen to Gary Cherone sing these older Van Halen tunes, and Dave, because at least he sticks to the lyrics… no matter how many times you see these guys are here these guys the band was always so tight, so goddamn good. We wish you were still here, Eddy! You gave us a lifetime of rock ‘n’ roll pleasure.
Man...this aged well for this VH head. All four of these cats really giving their all, FOR THE MUSIC. Hats off to Mike, Gary, Alex, and Edward in '98. In the freekin pocket.
Hunter Hoag Eddie said this VH line-up was leaning towards a Pink Floydish type of vrock sound, and they had the talent to do this...it would have been great but you don't sound like Pink Floyd in one try...I just wish thay had done at least 4 albums (in 4 years), then gone back to heavier music. Fair Warning plus Pink Floyd could have been classic!
The addition of Gary was a masterstroke, guy could sing any era of VH and although VH3 wasn't as strong over the entire album as some of their previous work there was a few outstanding songs on it! Year to the day is Van Halens stairway to heaven and as witnessed in this video Gary sings his ass off! Dave couldn't sing that good on his best day ever!

Simply the best live version of this song ever (at least captured on tape). VH on that tour was very tight... made up for a weak album.
Agreed. This was by far the best tour I've seen of theirs as it went the farthest into their musical catalog. That's something that neither Sammy nor Dave did.
Love the added bluesy vocal style of Cherone on this version. The breakdown in the middle was magic!
Saw this tour.... Eddie was on top of his game!!!
The best live record quality of a van halen, that I've ever watched, but this also shows why this guy different than you and me, will be remembered for the very future. He changed the music and then the industry, and so the culture
Gary... One of the best vocalist.. He sang this song amazingly suprising🎉 amazinggggg
Totally agree. Eddie is on fire for this show.
Agreed. I also really like this stage setup. Thought it was clean but cool and created a more focused effect on the band.
Yeah his peavey 5150's - effects wise he had a flanger, phaser, wah wah pedal, 2 delays (with tempos set differently) and a eventide harmonizer (which he really used on that tour - last time he used the harmonizer was the Balance Tour )
This is by far my favorite version of MS
I bought a 5150 slant cab the year they came out. It arrived with a dead XLR jack but other than that, I'll NEVER let it go. It's HEAVY as fuck (they compressed 11 plys to the thickness of a Marshall 7 ply cab) but it basically means you can fire your bassist as it growls AND has bottom.
Really cool rendition ... Everybody was great !!!
That strangled divebomb near the end of the solo is wicked.
Everything he does is wicked. In a class by himself.
I remember watching this on MTV --- I think it was a live event? Hard to believe that MTV used to show actual concerts LOL
1:05 one of the greatest riffs in the history of goddamn rock n roll!!!!!!! #kingfuckingedward🐐🤘🎸
Cherone.. One lucky bastard... been in two bands with arguably the two best guitar players of rock!
No he doesn't.
they did do a new album and toured it
@@imelvino - The OP is saying they should’ve toured on the Dave and Sammy catalog before doing a new album with Gary.
The band is tight and rocking harder than ever in this video. Sound great!
at the risk of sounding like an idiot I actually LOVE the addition of the shaker at the end....and Gary's note at 3:28 just absolutely....wow
fuck offf man its crap
I'm so glad I seen gary shiron with van halen I got to see a different side. Of what it would sound like. And thank you for that. I never looked back left the midterm to go see the show best decision I ever made. I've seen every singer with Van Halen in every show. That was in my town or state michigan, detroit, pine knob This is where I saw Gary Sharon with Van Halen.
Great night
Since 1983
The intro to the song is mind blowing.
Gary killed this and there's a LOT of Aussies that should consider themselves very lucky!!!! What a hell of a show this had to of been!!!
May Eddie shred in peace, and disturb everybody else 🎸🎸🎸🎸
Let's get my mid term at community college to see Gary Charon sing with Van Halen at pine knob. Best decision I ever made Gary's a great singer i thought he rocked you did a great job
Love that little fill that Alex did at 4:44
Tell you the truth, I’d rather listen to Gary Cherone sing these older Van Halen tunes, and Dave, because at least he sticks to the lyrics… no matter how many times you see these guys are here these guys the band was always so tight, so goddamn good. We wish you were still here, Eddy! You gave us a lifetime of rock ‘n’ roll pleasure.
Ed makes everything better what a guitar player never. Will there be another
Man...this aged well for this VH head. All four of these cats really giving their all, FOR THE MUSIC. Hats off to Mike, Gary, Alex, and Edward in '98. In the freekin pocket.
Awesome live version, Gary sounds great as did VH III
I totally agree! Its a much different sound, but lets embrace the change...not bash our favorite band for trying something new!!
You see Alex smiling there at the end of the video at Eddie? His face says it all: "I can't believe this MF'r!!!!"
Seriously?. Might be one of the dumbest comments of the year so far
what??? these vocals are pure garbage for VH classic songs, his style doesn't match the originally intensity. Not even close.
Wow I've never seen or heard this before and I'm blown away! ffing fantastic!!
This guitar tone is still amazing today.
Saw this tour..awesome!
Yep, I’ll say it too… Eddie was the master af tone and technique. Gary sounds great and this performance is nothing short of stellar! I’m going back to watch again 🤘🏼
Best Live Take Ever Eddie's Dancing Now
Up on Gods Street!
The place is packed and I dont see anybody complaining. Gary is a great singer, just one more version of this great band.
That album barely sold 500k. Huge disappointment.
This song is supernaturally cool and amazing …..
Unbelievable!! He and Jimi are 2 that changed the direction of playing guitar. Everyone else followed in their steps.
Wow 1st time I have seen Cherone with VH...Really different.. Yes his energy is good...Like at the Freddy Mercury Concert....
Gary is bad ass! This sounds awesome! Thanks for posting.
Best version of this song by any singer! Outstanding!
San Bernardino, CA
July 4th, 1998
Glen Helen Regional Park.
I was also there on Sunday, May 29, 1983 & July 11, 2015.
Watching the Van Halen 3 stuff.... This stuff is as good as live Edward gets
Eddie was on his game here !! Absolute gunslinger showing everyone that he’s still sitting on the top of the mountain and hasn’t been knocked off yet !!!
Too bad Gary wasn't given more a credit. He's an amazing Vocalist with an incredible range. I saw 4 shows on this tour and he killed all the songs! Eddie was so crisp
Band wise better playing than 2004. Gary hung in there and got the job done. I have to admit I saw this in its entiret. The concert was on point and all four of them gave their best. Thank you guys for being the talented performers that you are. Long live VH
