I think Gary was right. He said if they had toured first around the DLR/Hagar catalogue and then went and did the studio album that the Cherone version of VH would have turned out differently and been longer lasting. Gary was really good and was able to do the entire VH catalogue versus just Dave or just Sammy (with a little Dave sprinkled in).
People give Cherone a lot of grief but not only does the guy sing really well, I love his energy and his moves. And obviously there are a ton of people in the crowd so they must love it too.
Cherone did great. Saw him with VH and Extreme in 2019... VH in Melbourne, 1998, nearly 15,000 people... I still remember that concert vividly, the energy was amazing.
Gary rules here! He's voice is good and moves works too. Dont really know why people dont like him? Very talented singer and frontman. Too bad they didnt make any good new songs with gary.
Cherone was an admirable frontman in that he charged at the most difficult VH songs in the catalog and mostly nailed 'em all. Setting aside his parting from VH for...well, whatever reason is given officially or unofficially, I think Gary gets so much shit from people because he was just different from Roth and Hagar. Not better, not worse, just different, and so many fans just couldn't accept that. Having mentioned all this, I gotta confess that I haven't heard Cherone's work with Extreme which I'm told is very good stuff. I mean, a good frontman is hard to find for any band in any era of rock 'n roll, so I should say that VH made the best of a bad situation when they picked Cherone to take over for Sammy.
Coming back in to this subject about Gary. More years go by the more people realize how good fit he really was! Like Gary said afterwards "Only regret i have is i wish we could have made the record after the tour" That's the thing which really makes all the sense. Gary joined the band and they went to the studio right away... The actual tour was great and they really started to shine together in middle of that. Huge shame that they fired Gary and i believe other members know it too.
It's also worth keeping in mind that this was two or three shows into the tour, Gary's first time singing a lot of these songs in a live setting. Even for professional musicians, it can take a while to find your groove in a new gig.
Never knew a Half-life 2 NPC sung for Van Halen In all honesty though, Gary is a great front man and deserves respect. He absolutely smashed this tour. The best parts about Sammy and Dave combined into one package.
@@stevenlornie1261 Roth was a great of a entertainer & his style of singing was extremely different from Gary & Sammie but he could sing. Gary was probably the best singer they had of the three as it pertains to vocals but like I said in my original comment wrong piece of the puzzle at the time. That had more to do with the Van Halen brothers than Gary. Sammie Hagar was the hybrid version of both combining the entertainment style & singing of both so to speak. Just hard to follow the success of both especially when not really given a real chance to see things develop.
i was in the front row in front of eddie that night and heres some trivia.. i met him later that night in double bay and he was talking about how he had to mix it down for a very tight turn around and tokyo TV release and that this was the first night he had ever wore ear plugs in his life (to protect ears)and he was never going to wear them again.. he hated it....
The album might have sold better if they had toured before recording the VHIII album, as was preferred. Maybe a couple more 'tour inspired' tracks. The final production/engineering might have also been a little tighter than what they did actually release if they'd toured first. It was also a challenging time in general for bands like Van Halen. Grunge had kinda changed the scene at this time and Van Halen's bands core fans weren't 16 years old any more, so the 80's bands had to evolve a little to stay relevant to the greater market. Plus, it couldn't have helped that Ed wasn't in a good place during a lot of this time. I was at this concert and they really delivered live. Gary had the goods and seemed able to honour and showcase the history of the band and do the new stuff as well. A bit of a shame, it would have been interesting to see how it could have evolved.
Poor dude never had a chance. Being Van Halen’s third singer would’ve been a curse for a David Lee Roth clone. Although I do think Mitch Malloy (who auditioned) or Sebastian Bach may have faired better. Gary definitely had the pipes to pull it off. But his appearance kinda clashed with the Van Halen “look”. Superficial, yeah. But definitely a contributing factor. It was definitely a 90’s kinda vibe. But it just didn’t mesh with Van Halen. I think if they would’ve put out another album, they possibly could’ve pushed through. Van Halen 3 was not horrible. It just wasn’t what people wanted. The elements were there. The recipe was wrong. Too bad really. Gary is a great singer. And he had lots of energy. Just a victim of circumstances. Now that Eddie has passed, (RIP King Edward) people will rediscover the VH3 album. As so many had dismissed it. It may eventually become a very underrated cult album. Like Chinese Democracy from GNR. It’s a shame it didn’t work. But I’d already jumped off the Van Halen train when Dave left. Sammy is a great artist too. But my generation VH is where my love for VH will always be. There will never be another Van Halen. Glad I was there for the ride. 🤘🏻
As much as I hate to say it Garry was the best live singer for this group, but in the studio nobody beats David..those early records with david lee roth were absolutely amazing.
I'm sorry but Dave singing live is pure torture to the ears..there I said it! He sucked ass back in the 70s and he sucks even more ass now, as far as studio albums by David & Van Halen..the best! His voice on those early records was fantastic..but live he's incredibly annoying
Cherone blows Roth away, as in he can actually SING"!..and is a better singer than Hagar..who is good..... the guy was a great fit...moves real well onstage too!
Gary is great. I love his music and voice, but it just didn't do it for me with VH. I still would have paid to see Mikey Alex and Eddie, though VH will live forever.
In order to sell the art you have to sell the artist first. Gary Cherone had the pipes, talent, and experience to do justice to both DLR's and Sammy's songs, but he needed to have long hair. That's all it would have taken for him to cemented his place in VH. You think that's stupid? You gotta remember wer're talking about the 90's with an aging 80's fan base; they wanted the fantasy as they remembered it, both audio and visual. Gary Cherone lacked the visual part with his short hari, and sadly, the singer is 50% of the band, so this was killikng the vibes as he came across like a wedding band singer. Don't think long hair played an important role? Look up the backlash Metallica received when they all cut their hair in the 90's.
His voice is great but he does not look or move in a Van Halen way.. Too funky or something don't know what it is but he does not fit in Van Halen sad because he's a great singer live
Gary is great but his vocal style doesn't suit the band much, also it looks like he's trying not to sound like David here which made the song sound even more different.
Maybe Gary and DLR were boyfriends? Lol, He isn't too bad actually... Look at Eddie man... he looks like shit now compated to 98... I feel bad because that's what drug abuse does to you. Granted its been 14 years, but damn
people who say Gary did a good job do not know music. Gary sounds bad for this band. His voice is below average and sounds like a drunk angry dude trying to sing karaoke at a bar on a drunken blackout Friday night.
Say what you will, but Cherone DID have the pipes to pull this off..
I saw Gary with Extreme in March of 95. The guy doesn’t run out of breath he was holding notes running around. Very underrated lead singer.
I think Gary was right. Ganassi 988 Ted Danson

Ed’s tone is MONSTROUS!!!
Ed's tone is so good on this tour
Very strong vocals. I like this guy
Live with VH, Gary killed it. In the studio they killed him....
that little harmonic thing eddie did during the interlude was fuckign awesome
Saw them live with David. They were bloody good. R.I.P Eddie. I've still got the VH3 Cd you signed. Thank you.
Gary rocked the shit outta this, all haters should just be ignored. and a shirt is not a suit.
VH 3 was a killer tour
Gary is a bit goofy but he has the range to do both Roth and Hagar songs.
Goofy? Roth's a clown.
Agree....GARY SANG HIS GUTS OUT FOR VH....

Love this Jam! 🔥🤟💯
Oh my - Eddie and Mikey! Some groovy background vocals
It's also worth keeping in mind that this was two or three shows into the tour, Gary's first time singing a lot of these songs in a live setting. Even for professional musicians, it can take a while to find your groove in a new gig.
Yeah baby! Them were the days. Just awesome! E.v.h. for ever. 😅😊
They sound great together
Anyone that bashes Gary Cherone knows absolutely shit.
He's a classic rock singer 🙂
Never knew a Half-life 2 NPC sung for Van Halen
In all honesty though, Gary is a great front man and deserves respect. He absolutely smashed this tour. The best parts about Sammy and Dave combined into one package.
Great! Top Singer!!!
Aussies are so damn lucky they are treated with this fantastic tones from Eddie. And Cherone rocks too.
Awesome Stuff Guys....Cheers from Damo.
RIP EDDIE VAN HALEN :(
Man, Dennis Reynolds sure can sing good live :-)
Eddie guitar tone❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
love how he sings this part 1:42 sounds pretty cool when he sings that line
Van Halen caught lightning in a bottle with Sammy after DLR and the bottle blew up with Gary. Good front man just wrong piece of the puzzle.
yeah cause this sounds awful. Roth couldn't sing for shit.

this is killer.
sounds pretty tight here -- gary was great
The best van halen cover ever !
This is Van Halen. 💫

The greatest Van Halen cover band.
there is more to a band than the singer..just sayin
Eddy on this tour is very wild and fast .. really different from the bad us festival 83 show.
'86 was great
Hey. It's A Masterpiece! dependent caring What's your opinion about this

the balck suit he's wearing looks cool looking on him in my opinion
As much as I hate to say it Garry was the best live singer for this group, but in the studio nobody beats David..those early records with david lee roth were absolutely amazing.
this is a very hard song to sing live....it is a purely "studio song" ...Dave did a bad job live as well.....Samy sang it the best live...
I'm sorry but Dave singing live is pure torture to the ears..there I said it! He sucked ass back in the 70s and he sucks even more ass now, as far as studio albums by David & Van Halen..the best! His voice on those early records was fantastic..but live he's incredibly annoying
He didn't bring it on home...
Best comment

Someone please tell me why Alex has that nek brace on? 👀😝🇺🇲
ボーカルのゲイリーは良い声してます。プレイに一体感もある感じがします。
You do and you'll clean it up...:)
Still don’t understand all the hate Gary gets.
He has no long hair was not fit for the band image but he is a goof singer
Lots of talent that just didn't become the some of its parts. It was missing the elusive element that nobody can bottle.
Cherone is a robot
y wear a suit? dude your in a rock band? glad dlr back
Cherone blows Roth away, as in he can actually SING"!..and is a better singer than Hagar..who is good..... the guy was a great fit...moves real well onstage too!
Gary is great. I love his music and voice, but it just didn't do it for me with VH. I still would have paid to see Mikey Alex and Eddie, though VH will live forever.
Ted Danson, lead vocals
but you have to admit the drunk guy singing karaoke is always the life of the party :)
Ted Danson on lead vocals.
Seems a little slower
Gary: I'm singing like i'm going to be in Van Halen for the rest of my life....
ooops
I went to this concert he did not feel like a natural fit for the band.
In order to sell the art you have to sell the artist first. Gary Cherone had the pipes, talent, and experience to do justice to both DLR's and Sammy's songs, but he needed to have long hair. Also would’ve helped if there would’ve been one classic VH song from this era
the VH3 album wasnt good enough but hey ur right Gary does do a good job he would only be good for a tour cause Gary can sing better than Dave
Such a shame they made Gary ruin his tone to try and square-peg him into Van Halen's style. He clearly has great range. How humiliating.
まず原曲キーでPanamaを聴けるシンガーなの。ゲイリーは当然うまいし、個人的にリーロスはパフォーマー、ゲイリーはシンガーだと考えてる。
moi j'trouve que Gary ne va pas vraiment avec VH !
His voice is great but he does not look or move in a Van Halen way.. Too funky or something don't know what it is but he does not fit in Van Halen sad because he's a great singer live
gary is a good singer. but i think he sings better the samy haggar era songs
what a tool Gary Cherone is. Rest of the band was great.
There's something "off" here. Alex 's beat is way off, the tempo is too slow.
VH did a great tour with Gary but the VH3 wasnt the best VH3 i mean half the album was good but Gary was only good for a tour
Alex looked jolly strange at this show. Like a mummy or something.
Was nice of them to let that audience member get up and sing with them
Gary is great but his vocal style doesn't suit the band much, also it looks like he's trying not to sound like David here which made the song sound even more different.
you can NOT replace David Lee Roth !
Never knew Dustin Diamond sang for Van Halen
He only rocks ain't talking about love here he is not good for the song
Maybe Gary and DLR were boyfriends? Lol, He isn't too bad actually... Look at Eddie man... he looks like shit now compated to 98... I feel bad because that's what drug abuse does to you. Granted its been 14 years, but damn
Musically Its Like It Should Be Ed and Al Owned It
Gary Is Not Van Halen or Van Hagar !! He is Exteme Not Van Halen Period
"Na na na na naaaaaa!"
See? That's why, despite how great a singer Gary is, he just did NOT fit Van Halen.
Nope
Sammy Sang it better ....
No Dave, No VH......
That's really not good. At all. Indisputable
people who say Gary did a good job do not know music. Gary sounds bad for this band.
His voice is below average and sounds like a drunk angry dude trying to sing karaoke at a bar on a drunken blackout Friday night.
